Loretta Sweet loves the library in Misery, Mississippi and recently started volunteering there. Iris Huggins, the librarian, asked her to check and empty the outside return book bin. When Loretta was retrieving the books, she had to reach far inside to get the last one. When she finally grabbed it, she noticed the outside of the book was covered with a sticky, red substance. Worried that it might be blood, she left the book in the bin and rushed in to tell Iris. Iris calls Officer Gatlin and when he sees Loretta’s hands and the book, he requests help from the crime scene investigators. They discover Molly Crisco’s body in the bushes in front of the library and she’s clutching a pink headband like Loretta and her twin sister, Lacy, always wear, in her hand. Believing she’s being set up to take the fall, she starts her own investigation.

Lacy Sweet isn’t happy when she learns Loretta is planning an appreciation cookout with games and prizes for the Breezy Point residents and Take Two Teepee Rental tenants. Strange things have been occurring … graffiti, a fire in a trash can fire near the clubhouse, the hoses being cut on the washing machine in the communal laundry room, and Barkley (Savannah Dogwood’s sweet Chihuahua) mysteriously disappearing, Loretta can’t believe someone would do these awful things to them here in the quiet town of Misery, Mississippi. She’s determined to figure out who the culprit is.

Loretta Sweet is finalizing the details for the appreciation cookout for the Breezy Point residents and Take Two Teepee Rental tenants and overseeing the work for the expansion of the trailer park when the body of Ernie Sapp (a local bar owner) found floating in the swimming pool. Ernie wasn’t a resident of either the trailer park or teepee rentals so unless he was visiting someone who lived there, there was no reason for him to be in their pool. Loretta is hopeful that he had a heart attack and that the scene would be cleared quickly and not interrupt their cookout. Loretta believes there are several people with motives and discovers some interesting clues. She asks Uncle Ichabod to help her view the surveillance tapes but they were too grainy to be of any help. After going over the facts and clues multiple times and talking to a few people, she believes she knows who murdered Ernie.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
