Blame It on My Youth: Stories by students on the art of being young
Blame It on My Youth is a compilation of poems and stories written by students and alumni of Ghent University, Belgium. The anthology revolves around the themes of 'growing up' and 'being young'.
From the luxuriously lyrical to the darkly ironic, from the playfully lighthearted to the deeply serious, the book travels across a range of genres, styles, and topics. All the pieces can be read independently, but due to the chosen order of the pieces, the book in its entirety also tells a story of its own.
Blame It on My Youth introduces a highly heterogeneous group of voices with different backgrounds, ares of study, and interests; what connects them is that they all discovered their passion for writing behind the school benches. With this book, the initiators hope to encourage this passion, and to inspire other student-writers to never stop writing.

Blame It on My Youth is an honest, openhearted anthology. The different stories and poems succeed in making up a diverse portrayal of youth, each on their own way.
Of course there is a lot of difference between each one of them, which makes it difficult to rate the anthology as a whole.
The opening story, Arbitrary Grace, is really touching and probably one of my favourites of the compilation, along with Evergreen, which is again the perfect closing for Act 1, Childhood.
Act 2, Adolescence, contains some painfully well written contributions that reflect perfectly what this stage of life feels like, probably because it corresponds the ages of most of the authors. Good examples are 3 AM Thoughts and Memory.
Act 3, Young Adulthood, shows a fragile balance between a new found maturity and the still present naivety and hope. The writing of these contributions is of a bit more complexity than the previous ones, which matches this next life stage perfectly.

Review : Blame It On My Youth is een compilatie van Engelstalige verhalen en gedichten geschreven door studenten en oud-studenten aan de Faculteit Letteren en Wijsbegeerte van de UGent. De compilatie verzamelt 36 stukken die draaien rond de thema’s 'jong zijn' en 'opgroeien'. De titel is gebaseerd op een jazz standard met dezelfde naam. Het boek is, gezien het thema, onderverdeeld in drie bedrijven, waarvan het eerste handelt over de kindertijd, het tweede over de puberteit, en het derde over jongvolwassenheid. De drie bedrijven bevatten elk twaalf stukken, waarbij telkens een gedicht wordt afgewisseld met een kortverhaal. Dankzij de gekozen opeenvolging van de verschillende stukken vertelt het boek in zijn geheel ook een verhaal op zich.
De vijftien auteurs en twee redacteurs van Blame It On My Youth vormen een uiterst heterogene groep met verschillende achtergronden, studiegebieden, en interesses; wat hen verbindt, is dat ze allemaal hun passie voor schrijven ontdekt hebben op de schoolbanken van de universiteit. De diverse achtergronden laten zich echter goed voelen in het boek en dat maakt dan ook dat je een 'literaire' jazzsong krijgt waarin het swingt, maar tegelijkertijd ook een beetje 'huilt', groeipijnen en dollen, ach ik wijt het allemaal aan de heerlijke, dwaze jeugd.
Blame It On My Youth bevat bijdragen van Lore De Greve, Vera Verhelst, Sela Nackaerts, Kaat Chiau, Louise Buysschaert, Emma Vu-Doan, Tobias Santens, Benjamin De Roover, Anahita Chiabani, Marescha Muys, Cara Uyttebroeck, Helena Gezels, Johanan Seynave, Robin Hutse en Kate Luysterborg en ze laten je allen in mooi proza of/en poëzie vergelijken, ontroeren en terugblikken.
