I won this book in a goodreads giveaway!

This was a fun little adventure that I enjoyed more than I had expected.
The writing style was very simple and included a lot of dialogue, which made the book a fast and easy read. The length was fitting for the amount of plot.
The way the different backgrounds of the characters were interwoven was done well and believable, which surprised me. I also really liked that there was a small part taking place in our world; it was cute and a nice addition.
I liked the characters - which is why I would have liked more information about them. I had troubles picturing them as there was so little written about their looks and personality traits. There was also pretty much no world building. It worked thanks to the short length of the book, but I still would have been better to get more explanations.
I also found some typos and grammatical errors, but I guess that's due to the translation and isn't the authors fault.

I received a copy of this book through Goodreads Giveaway , but this has not influenced my review.

Gunhild is the best troll hunter in the kingdom, but she is also careless, impatient and constantly putting herself in danger . that was until the amethyst crown was stolen by a troll , therefore ,Gunhild followed it (the troll) to the Troll Island in order to get the country's most valuable treasure back . there she met Kirabo, an alien from an advanced planet and his robot RJ , so, they go on a journey together experiencing many difficulties , sacrifices and breath taking adventures.

I was not expecting that I will like this book, because I don't really like sci-fic. so , I was hesitateing whether to start reading it or not.

well , at the beginning , it was going pretty well -Gunhild hunting trolls and having great ambitions in becoming the first female general..- it seemed a great fantasy story , but then Kirabo and RJ showed up ,so , I got very disappointed and confused , I did not want that fantasy world to end , but the author did a great job with combining both fantasy and sci-fic together.

This book was a fast read and I enjoyed it a lot . It's also a self-published which is very impressive.

I received a copy of this book through Goodreads Giveaway.

I really did not expect that I'd like this book so much. At first I thought mixing robots, trolls, and aliens in one book was hard to pull off, but the author managed to execute the concept amazingly well! The medieval + sci-fi genre was unique and the storyline was refreshing, not to mention the absence of romance. I am not exaggerating when I say that this has to be one of the most fascinating books that I've read.

Kirabo, Gunhild, and RJ's team was unusual, but fun. Their adventure was enthralling, and it certainly would pull any reader into it. The only 'downside' that I found in this book is that it was too short (having only 170 pages), but I guess it could be a good thing- it's better to have a short but satisfying and fun-packed story than to have a long, dragged-out one. Yet reaching the end of this book made me crave for more ; ; I found it kind of hard to part with Petrified, but I am happy with the story's ending. This is definitely worth the read! I look forward to more creative stories from the author.

A fresh take on the young adult genre. Was a great time and I was sad when it was over.

And for some reason the ending made me cry.

Knights, trolls, and aliens? What a strange, yet awesome combination!

Gunhild is a royal knight. She is a fierce female with a knack for taking down menacing trolls, far exceeding the deeds of her fellow knights. Yet, when the time for a promotion comes around, she is passed up. Furious, she demands an answer as to why, only to learn that her overzealous and fearless work ethic makes her a danger in a leadership role.

Determined to prove herself, Gunhild volunteers to help retrieve a stolen item of great value. This entails traveling, alone, to the trolls' island in order to scout the enemy. As a heroine, Gunhild is quick-witted, calculated, and an overall interesting woman to follow.

On the other side, we have our visitor-from-another-world, Kirabo. Landing on the planet by accident, his space vehicle becomes stuck without enough fuel to return home. And where does he land? On the trolls' island, of course!

This book had a good mix of humor, action, suspense, and imagination. I laughed, loudly, several times when reading the dialogue of Kirabo's sarcastic robot sidekick. The action scenes were aplenty but I didn't feel as if they took over the story. Sometimes, too much action can actually have the opposite effect and bore me. Not this time, though.

Petrified pleased me, for the most part. I loved the idea of estranged parents working together to tell this story, each adding their own twists. It made the story more creative and enjoyable to see a mash-up of ideas from each parent and it was a heartwarming addition.

My major gripe is with the technicality. I would prefer smaller paragraphs for an easier and more aesthetically pleasing read. Some paragraphs were so large that they took up my entire screen and I lost my place more than once. Also, there were constantly repeated words and phrases such as "managed to". However, this could have been a result of translation if not a writing blunder. This book was not originally written in English.

There is no love story here, which I was fine with. Though, I did get an idea that there would be one from the book's description which clearly introduces both female and male characters, so I naturally assumed. But even though there was no romance, this was still a good read. And while there are alien and robot characters, this is definitely more of a fantasy YA read than Sci Fi.

In closing...
Imaginative story with interesting characters and creatures. Four suns!

I was surprised by this book. It was good. Background story about divorced parents, whose love for their child, bring them together to make a one of a kind story for their daughter. Two different views, from two different people. The story they made up was good also. A strong warrior and a pacifist.

In "Petrified" a short novel which I won through Goodreads Giveaways Oalf Moriarty Solstrand combines trolls, knights, an alien and robot in a creative and unique plot that begins with a bedtime story. To get Ylva to go to sleep her mother weaves a fairytale adventure that not only captures her imagination but eventually unites her divorced parents in the telling.

It begins with Gunhild as strong-willed and impulsive knight sent on a reconnaissance mission to Troll Island in the middle of the fiord after the royal amethyst crown is stolen during the coronation ceremony. Scouting out the island for caves that could house the dangerous, legendary creatures Gunhild meets Kirabo a pacifist from the planet Aberash and his robot RJ who are stranded on her home world after the wrong coordinates are entered into the spaceship. Hunting for fuel to take them home the space traveller and robot not only stumble into the knight but the three form an alliance that has them working together to survive a deadly confrontation with the Trolls.

Cleverly the author weaves a plot that not only unites the storytellers, estranged after their divorce but also whisks their daughter away to a land where a young knight learns to think differently when taking action, about friendship and even self-sacrifice while Kirabo suffering a loss begins to understand that knowledge isn't everything. Mesmerizing from the first page to the last, the plot is well-structured, action-filled, intense and even touching and ends with a twist after a confrontation with the Trolls.

Gunhild Baardsolotter a knight in the Royal Army is tough, bold, strong and reckless. She dreams one day of becoming a general but can't get a promotion because of her insatiable need to be the best and do everything herself. Kirabo is the straight-laced, smart and peaceful alien who uses the spaceship in his garage to earn money for his University education while RJ is his sarcastic, delightfully funny and chatty personal assistant. Together the three form a bond of friendship that's unbreakable even though they're all different and live worlds apart. Like all the characters these three infuse the story with depth, spirit and energy which makes the fairytale compelling in its intensity.

I thoroughly enjoyed "Petrified" and can't wait to see what this new writer has in-store for his readership next.

I was sent an e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

When the book first starts out, I really liked that it followed a young girl and her mother as they get ready for bed. The young girl asks her mother to tell her a bedtime story and from there, the story of Gunhild is told. I loved that the book felt like a bedtime story because of the setup.

The story is very much a unique one. It was so different than a lot of YA books I've read in the past and not just because of the world and the characters, but just because of the fact that it was almost like a sci-fi movie. It had trolls, aliens, robots, a middle earth type feel to Gunhild's world, not to mention very awesome action scenes that kept the book fun and fast paced. I really had a lot of fun reading this book because of how different it was and it had a lot to offer to all kinds of readers.

I really liked Gunhild's personality. She was very strong and very much a go-getter and didn't approve of when she wasn't taken seriously for any reason. She wanted to prove to a lot of people that she was strong and a good fighter despite her hot-headedness and rule-breaking habit. She was very fiery and I really liked her character because of that. I also really liked Kirabo and RJ since they did bicker a lot and it was very entertaining to read. Kirabo was a little unsure of Gunhild's world since he was an alien after all and RJ was a very snarky but helpful robot full of personality. He reminded me a little of Iko from The Lunar Chronicles and he was very loveable.

Overall, this was just a very fun and different read than a lot of books I've been reading lately. I think a lot of different readers will enjoy this one especially since it has a lot of elements that fit very well together even though they were all so different. I highly recommend this one if you just want a fun adventure with action, humor, fantasy, and a lot of trolls.

Okay, when I first saw the cover to Petrified, I will have to say the spaceship and young girl in a medieval getup intrigued me. Then the blurb added a bit a fuel to the fire and I wasn’t wrong to pick up this novel.

Trolls + Robots + Aliens = so much yes!

Petrified is THE most unique YA novel I read this year. It’s like Lord of the Rings meets Independence Day except the main character is a kick ass teenage heroine and a sassy robot side kick thrown in the mix. It was obvious to me that Solstrand poured time into world building and characterization. Even with all the world and character development, there was plenty of action to keep the plot rolling. No boredom here.

Gunhild is an amazing YA character. There’s not many novels with a female protag that goes on a self-discovery that doesn’t including falling in love. I mean, how many novels have you read where the female protag sets out on an adventure and comes back changed for the better without some romance sub-plot? Not Petrified. Gunhilds evolution from fearless, hot-head to calculated heroine makes her an amazing role model for any young girl who will pick this book up... Who wouldn’t want to read about a strong, female warrior?

If you like fantasy elements smashed with science fiction, substantial character growth, and no romance. Then Petrified is the book for you.

Thank you to the author and Goodreads for this giveaway !
I'm not going to rate this book because I don't really know what to think about this story. It wasn't what I was expected, in this kind of science-fiction/fantasy story, there is usually more world building, which is what make me like a book or not, and in this case, we don't really know anything about the planets of the characters. The book is quite short, which is maybe the cause of this absence, but I a more used to world-building like in Marion Zimmer Bradley stories.
I also think that the book would be more appreciated by younger people (I'm 19), maybe 12-14 years old. Indeed, the characters are quite stereotypical and there is no surprises in the plot.
My review could seem a little bit harsh, but I think I am just not the target for this book, being more used to stories of ''epic'' proportion.
It didn't stop me for having a good time while reading this book, but it wasn't exactly what I was expected.

I apologies for any grammatical mistakes in this review, english is not my mother tongue.

*I received a copy of this book for free in exchange for an honest review.*

"Oh no, yet another Katniss/Triss somewhat dystopian feminist YA novel?" After 20 pages I was rolling my eyes so hard it hurt. And then everything changed for the better.

This novel turned out to be something completely different, in a 100% good way. Trolls, aliens, knights, oh my! "Petrified" has an interesting plot, vivid imagery, and it was quite funny, too. The Harry Klein bit made me guffaw. I ended up spending my entire Sunday morning and afternoon with this book instead of cleaning the house. So not complaining.

My reasons for not giving this book five stars: some spell check errors, a couple of redundancies (but what book hasn't got any of those?), and "the ending after the ending" (no spoilers!). I guess that part became too YA for me.

Anyways, I hope we get to meet the characters again!

I received a copy of this book through goodreads giveaway.

This was a nice, fun and quick story. :) I loved the genre mash-up. I didn't read the synopsis right before starting so I was surprised at the sci-fi entrance, but it made sense with the way the story is told.

The 'storytellers' narrative could have had me rolling my eyes, but it was done well enough that it helped and didn't hinder the story.

Story-wise it was good, but I could have used a little more character building to really solidify why these characters came to care so much for each other in such a short time.

The only thing that took me out of the story a little was the lack of flow in the wording, which maybe was a translation thing? It wasn't 'wrong' but it felt stilted in places.

I'd definitely recommend it to someone looking for something different. :)

I really enjoyed this, found it a fun mash-up of fantasy and sci fi, neither genres I normally read. Loved that the warrior is a fierce girl. Very clever and unique format to have the story be the alternating chapters of a bedtime story told by each divorced parent separately while not 'copping' out into an unrealistic reconcilliation. This was a find and an author to watch.

Read primarily as my Scandinavian Fantasy read for the Scandinavia House 2017 Nordic Summer Reading Challenge. Also fits Pop Sugar 2017 Reading Challenge advanced category of a book in a genre or subgenre I never heard of before - Scandinavian Fantasy.

What a great breath of fresh air this book gives. Yes all the elements have been done before, but never together. But more importantly the pulling together of the elements is brilliantly done. Great characters and beautiful storytelling.
I must admit that this was a good reads giveaway, so thank you for listing. This needs word of mouth as it were, so for my part, please do give Petrified a chance. It's different, fun and I will certainly be looking out for future books from the author!

I won this book on a Goodreads Giveaway. This was kind of an unusual book. The framing story is about a young girl, who is spending time between two divorced parents. She asks her mom to make up a bedtime story; so the mom starts telling her about a young woman soldier who goes to a nearby island to scout for trolls. She, naturally, leaves a cliffhanger; so the little girl asks her dad to continue the story. His story takes off on a sci fi note, rather than the mothers more medieval feel. The story then continues with the soldier woman meeting and trying to communicate with the alien man and his AI. After they start to understand each other a bit, they decide to work together to spy on the trolls. The two opposite characters learn several things about each other and things about the trolls that hadn't been known before. The book ends on actually, more of an adult level that the little girl is beginning to understand. I would give this 3.5 Stars If I could.
