The Vampire Queen Saga #1

Blood Fiends' Bane

Rate this book
Some treasures are best left buried.

Sentenced to five-years’ service as a soldier for a violent crime, Owen Toscovar now serves the noble Dain family as a man-at-arms. Because he is large and powerful, most deridingly refer to the young man as “Horse-Boy,” believing him to be little more than a quick-tempered brute, a tool for violence. But Owen is far cleverer than most suspect, and he bristles under his forced servitude, wishing to experience adventure and see the world beyond his northern Duchy. Owen is about to get his desire.

The Dains, a once proud royal family, have fallen into disfavor, but their fortunes change when a deathbed confession reveals a shocking secret -- the location of the mythical longsword Sight-Bringer. The magical sword was long believed destroyed in an apocalyptic battle fifty years ago that killed the terrifying Vampire Queen, Serina Greywynne. Now, Owen will accompany the new young Dain lord and his sister on an expedition to retrieve the holy relic. They will journey across an ocean and through a monster-filled swamp to the ruins of an abandoned fortress long believed haunted by the ghost of Serina herself.

But the legends are built on lies, and evil stirs in the catacombs beneath the fortress. In the slaughter that follows, Owen must somehow protect the Dain bloodline from an unholy evil, because if he fails, everyone he loves will die.

Intended for a mature audience, Blood Fiends’ Bane is the first book in the Vampire Queen Saga, a dark, gritty tale of sword-swinging-action, blood-curdling horror, and selfless duty in the face of unspeakable evil. Author William Stacey is a 2014 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award Quarter-Finalist.

This starts a little slow, but don’t give up because the more you read, the better it is. The story is told using the view of multiple characters which switch with each chapter which some people don’t like but it works with this book. The scenes with the soldiers and the military situations are excellent, but given the author’s previous career I wouldn’t have expected less. The world building is good; it reminds me of Wales as do many of the names of people and place. The character building is excellent, for the most part, however I would like more back-story on Serina, her family’s history, her brothers and father and more about how the magic began and why it’s stronger in the matriarchal line. Perhaps the author could give us a prequel and give us this information and more. Like more information on why the King was so threatened by the family, had this mistrust been growing for decades or even during the reign of previous monarchs?

The old Duke is dying, his heir is son Palin who is only 13 who has been raised by his sister, Danika who is 12 year older than her brother. They have a new physician Modwyn Du’Aig, who is a liar and also a murderer and his reasons for being at the castle are personal. During his last minutes of life the Duke mistakenly make his last confession to the doctor who he thinks is a new priest and tells him what happened when they went to kill Serina. His confession reveals that he wasn’t the hero he’s always professed and the reason he was the only survivor was because f his cowardice. As he witnessed the carnage that was happening and saw all the men who had already been killed he fled; leaving his brother Stron and the remainder of the army to die. Then he lied about what had happened to the sword Sight-Bringer, a holy relic that the king loaned Stron to destroy Serina and her army of undead soldiers. The king was furious, the family was disgraced and left heavily in debt when the king refused to reimburse them for the conflict they had waged to protect the kingdom. The doctor tells the family what their father had confessed and adds other details to ensure that they will do what he wants.

Palin is determined to retrieve Sight-Bringer, he believes that if he is able to retrieve it and return to the king. He believes it will restore the family’s honor, the king will pay them the money that has been owed to his family for almost 50 years and it will guarantee that the king appoints him as the new Duke of Wolfrey instead of his idiot, older cousin Harold. In order to retrieve the sword they must travel to the island where his ancestors fought Serina at her home on Greywynne Island. The trip is fraught with danger once they reach the islands, mosquitoes abound n the swamp as do marsh ticks, which are enormous, deadly and can only be killed if they are hit in one spot that not easy to reach. They hide during the day and attack at night, .but they do fear fire and will stay away unless……. (no spoiler). Many of those who go with Palin will not make it back and the world will need to be warned about what happened on the island. Palin, his men-at-arms, priests, servants, Modwyn and Danika take a ship Greywynne Island, to retrieve the holy relic.

The head of the men-at-arms is Keep-Captain Brice Awde who is very intelligent unlike his second-in-command Lieutenant Warin Sayer. While Awde is loyal and dependable he does have a secret that he thinks is unknown, but like many secrets it is known and it is because of this that I think that Plain allows himself to be swayed a man Awde mistrusts and dislikes instead of listening to the man who has been like a father to him and who has protected him and taught him everything he knows about fighting.

The novel is very enjoyable after the first few pages I found it hard to put down. As a fan of fantasies (including urban & paranormal and sword & sorcery novels I liked this book enormously. I’m continuing the series and reading The Shield of Serl Raven-Eye next and hoping that the 3rd will be released soon.

4.75/5 STARS: **I want to thank the author and/or publisher for providing me with a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review; all opinions are mine.**

I love this author’s voice. It presents the tale in such a unique manner. The manner in which he writes highlights certain aspects of the tale, increasing the intensity and the creativity of it. The active storytelling really draws you in. Plot twists and turns galore kept me on my toes while the gradual world building left me with a solid sense of having truly experienced it all. This novel has the feel of a fantasy tale while being so much more.

Stacey also creates some one of a kind, unforgettable characters that take the story from great to unforgettable. This unimaginably inventive story is the perfect place for them to shine. The unique mix of history and fantasy, intrigue and betrayal are the perfect place for them to shine. Intrigue, adventure, strength and courage all take a stand as characters battle to hold their own.

This is definitely an author to watch! From a unique and well laid out plot to solid world building and fantastic characters, he’s got it all.

Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this work in exchange for an honest review.

Blood Fiends' Bane is the first installment of The Vampire Queen's saga. It contains elements of fantasy and some horror, but for me, it ultimately read like a fantasy book involving an epic battle between Vikings and vampires. Very different than anything I had read previously. Like other fantasy series, the characters span various types, to include nobility, military, and magic. The story is told from multiple different points of view and the author did a good job of not making this too confusing for a reader. I thought the battle scenes were captured very eloquently. The author did a good job of describing events in a militarily strategic manner. The world building was a decent start, but the series could use more backstory, especially about how the main villain became the Vampire Queen. The enemy truly is evil in this book and it wasn't clear to me what the ultimate intentions of the enemy are besides getting revenge and how she plans to achieve it. Possible material for future installments, which I plan to read.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Between the siege, the death, the ritualistic sacrifice and slaughter, and the dark magic, Blood Fiend's Bane wastes no time in taking off full throtal with suspense and action, describing the events now forty-eight years past. As Auslaug Oar-Arm walks past the bodies of her fellow captains as she meets the summons from Queen Serina, death doesn't bother her so much as what will be wrought through it. So much for the honourable death in battle that she'd always pictured as the means by which she would leave this world. The rune marked floor of the Great Crypt is testament to the darkness manifested by the deaths of her colleagues. The northerner priests screaming their filth with their posse of stake and fire carrying invaders would undoubtedly breach the Greywynne Fortress in their irreconcilable passion to kill Serina. Auslaug expected to be dead before they'd pass her en route to Serina. As Serina's most cherished and loved childe she however had a different plan in mind for her general.

Nearly fifty years later it would be before the inklings of hidden truths from that night would surface. Passing from the pallid lips of a man too cowardice to aid in the confrontation with Serina, the dying duke, who'd ran in fear after witnessing failed attempts to kill Serina, describes the last things he saw. A man who would speak his greatest secret before departing the world for the eternal sleep. The barely graduated physician sitting bedside vigil, who covets intimate knowledge of the duke's daughter, would also lie, claiming priest status so as to hear the dying duke's confession. The legendary breaking of the sword Sight-Bringer, believed to have brought down the ceiling of Greywynne Fortress as it had cracked whilst buried in the heart of Serina, now only a fable if the delusional duke is to be believed.

The northerners had been the only soldiers and royals of the king who'd had the fortitude, resilience and drive to hold out and attack Serina's undead army a half century ago. The duke, was celebrated by the people of the kingdom as the only brave survivor of that fateful day. That his brother was buried along with the holy relic, Blood Fiend's Bane or Sight-Bringer, went against the northerners as the king's fury at his loss saw him backing out of promises made. The king's authority was paved in the traditions behind his three holy relics. Whilst he'd lent his sword and promised his coffers would absorb any debts incurred in the war, when the young man escaped without returning Sight-Bringer he was recognised as the new duke; but his family was left in immense debt they were still paying to this day. Penalty for losing and breaking the famous sword.

Despite the possible shame if the duke's lies were to reach the populace and royalty, the heir to his father's legacy, Lord Palin now sees an opportunity to assure his recognition as the new duke and absolution from his family's debts. If only he could retrieve and return the holy sword. Despite his older sister's caution and advice, Palin sees only adventure and fame in his mission to unearth the catacombs of the undead queen. With his men-at-arms and sister (Lady Danika) in-tow young Palin plans to travel to Greywynne Island, where the locals still hate the northerners for taking their queen. The good doctor however was not completely honest in relaying the dying man's confession; he omitted that Serina wasn't killed. Now Palin, Danika, their priests, physician, servants and men-at-arms are planning to sail to the island whilst having no clue as to what they may face. The antagonistic population still angry and potentially a significant risk, might be the least of their worries. The physician's omission appears to be strategic, as he now hatches plans behind the backs of those on the mission.

The combination of sword and sorcery with the vampiric urban fantasy is done in a seamless way as though the two usually separate styles are mixed all the time. Whilst the various denizens of the Fae often find roles in sword and sorcery, vampires are less often encountered. Such a move is not exactly unique, but the storyline within is nonetheless. The story is conceptually rich, with themes frequent and vast. For heavy readers there's much to consider just as there's plenty going on to keep light readers entertained too. With likeable main characters numbering in the double figures there's plenty of personalities to go round. The quest is long and large and yet it is still getting going. If you read Blood Fiend's Bane you'll have no choice but to go on and read book two, The Shield of Serl Raven-Eye. What a kingdom had pinned their hopes upon was concealed in round one, and put to proper test in round two. The opening chapter offers enough to know what's needed herein, but it could just as easily pave the way for a prequel riddled in action. Indeed, whether its answered or not, there's at least one question left unanswered.

Thoroughly entertaining and captivating, this book is one of those you'll find hard to put down. Even when little is happening the material is still enjoyed. Fluent writing and rich in details both the world and it's characters are built up well. Having first been a fan of epic fantasies and sword and sorcery before going on the read more paranormal and urban fantasies I definitely feel the combinations are a particularly defining feature, not that there aren't plenty more where they come from. Not shy in the description of events, the plot has much to draw you in. It also has that great feature where the story is both complete but still arouses your wonder at where else it might go. Make the choice of adding it to your library and you assuredly be rewarded, and looking to read more of The Vampire Queen Saga.

Convicted of a violent crime Owen Toscovar is sentenced to serve the Noble Dain family. He longs for the time he is free to adventure and soon fate hands him his opportunity. When the Duke, Oskaley Dain dies, he admits that he did not slay did not kill the Vampire Queen Selina as everyone has believed for the past 50 years. The truth was that he ran, leaving the mythical sword Sight-bringer buried under a cave-in, not destroyed as he had previously claimed. Soon, Owen will accompany the new Dain Lord and his sister to recover the sword. Predictably, nothing goes as planned and Owen must somehow protect the Dain bloodline from an unholy evil because if he fails, everyone he loves will die.

First of all, this is definitely a dark adult fantasy with loads of violence and sexual situations. One might expect this from a vampire tale but this is not your typical vampire story. In fact, there seems to be some confusion as to just what it is. Is it fantasy, heroic adventure, dark romance, paranormal romance or suspense? It has elements of all and can't quite seem to make up its' mind, coming across as a sort of cross between "The Vikings", "Game of Thrones" and "True Blood". To further compound the confusing nature of the story, it is told by multiple characters switching viewpoints with each chapter.

This is a complicated storyline and it requires a little effort to get into it. The opening is very slow. This is presumably because the author wants to give the reader time to become familiar with the characters and setting before moving the story along. I'm not so sure that works. The pairing of a complicated story with a slow opening no doubt loses some readers who are unwilling to invest the effort. Too bad, because once it does get rolling the reader finds themselves in a fully fleshed world dealing with characters they care about.

Other than what I have previously stated, I have few criticisms. The main characters are fully realized and the world building is excellent. But the cast of characters is large and there are some who don't really seem to have a place in the story. I presume they will appear in subsequent books. The storyline is a compelling one with lots of action, rivalry, vampires, Vikings, knights, heroes, magic and some romance. Mechanically, the book is sound with few spelling or punctuation errors. There is some incidence of repeated phrasing but not enough to throw the reader "out of the book".

While there is no cliff-hanger as such, the rather sudden conclusion screams for a sequel. Overall, I gave it three and one-half stars. The genre-bending nature of the story was a little off-putting for me, but I eagerly wait for the next book in the series. I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book by the Reading Deals Review Club so I could give an honest review.

Paranormal Thriller

This is the most complicated book in terms of genre I've read. But I couldn't put it down. It was so intense I couldn't believe it. William Stacey completely holds your attention. It moves from fifty years ago to current times so smoothly you almost forget it's not really happening. Stacey mixes all these different genres so smoothly you don't even notice. It's like they were made to be together, yet I've never read a book with all of them combined so smoothly. Thankfully I don't have to wait for the second book. It's already written. Don't miss one of the best series of 2016. I'm not so patiently waiting for the third book. ***Fair warning*** The Vampire Queen Saga is a dark, adult fantasy with violence and sexual situations.

I loved this book! I've never read a book from this author and I couldn't put it down! I love all kinds of books. Stacey is a wonderful writer and his books flow great! If you aren't into Viking like fantasy then this book probably isn't for you, but if you are this book is one you'll want to read. Upon their fathers death they learn the battle he was in that killed the blood queen didn't happen exactly as they were lead to believe and Danika and get brother Palin along with their man at arms set out to bring the magical sword sight bringer back to their king. I received a free copy of this book in return for an honest review.

Fresh take on a worn out genre. I love that this book isn't centered around romanticizing vampires. Brandon's imagination is rich and it shows in his writing. He has created a completely new world with well developed characters and plot lines.

This isn't some cheesy vampire book that you can read in two hours. I'd really recommend you tackle it when you have free time to concentrate and take in the author's words.

This book is very different from the usual vampire books I read. It's very unsuspecting and the story had more twists and turns than I could imagine. I can honestly say I have no idea where this story is going. It's not a bad thing, but, I don't know what will happen next.

I'm ready for book 2.

Entertaining

Finished this series after reading one of the authors other books (dark elf war trilogy) and ended up liking both of them. Thought that the ending was good although I was surprised that they didn’t explore the ruins further. Editing was good, very few mistakes.

Original Review Here

I’m always dubious when novels fall into the Vampire category, never certain as to which way it is going to go. Blood Fiend’s Bane, however, has all the violence and blood-lust we associate with the Dracula-style vampires and provided a real threat to the characters.

No risk of sparkling, vegetarian vampires here!

Blood Fiend’s Bane attracted my attention because it has a similar set up compared to historical fiction set in the Roman times. The soldiers’ way of life, their interactions with each other and their reasons for fighting reflects those of the Roman era. Only this time, a supernatural element was added in: it wasn’t soldiers they were fighting, but large tics deadly to men and a witch who should have been dead for hundreds of years. This combination worked for me: fantasy and historical fiction combined.

The characters were well-defined. I instantly liked Owen, a large man who must endure the comments and nick-names from his comrades, none of whom notice his intelligence. Owen isn’t prepared to follow orders blindly – he wants to do the right thing, regardless of the cost. Owen must accept what he is capable of, and what he is worth.

Dilan is also likeable – it didn’t take me long to warm to him. Owen remained my favourite though. The way Dilan takes charge at the end is admirable, but I couldn’t see the spark of heroism in him the way I could with Owen.

Throughout the novel, the reader knows the main characters are being double-crossed, which sometimes led to frustration that the characters themselves couldn’t see it. Although Owen never trusted Modwyn, nothing was done about it until too late. Modwyn made me shudder; his introduction revealed his lust for Lady Danika and his sleazy nature. His characterisation set him up as the villain from the start, despite his true treachery not being revealed until later. Modwyn only then wants to serve his mistress.

There was one side-story that I never understood. Characters were introduced, motives were given and their movements brought them in-line with the main characters. But nothing ever happened with them. The novel did end on a cliff-hanger, however, so I am hoping their story progresses in the second book because they did not add anything to this one other than confusion.

The pace of the novel is steady throughout, with enough danger in enough places that the tension remains high. I read Blood Fiend’s Bane in one sitting; despite the violence and mature themes, it is a relatively easy read.

Although I enjoyed Stacey’s writing, when it came to writing the review, I realised I hadn’t highlighted many passages at all that stuck out for me. I never got to the point where I was anxiously turning pages, wanting to find out what happened.

I enjoyed this book, but didn’t love it. There were some tense scenes and the fights were written in a clear manner. It ticked all the right boxes, but didn’t make my heart race.

An epic fantasy about the Lord and Lady of Dain trying to build their kingdom back up. After the war with the Blood Fiend Serina, the king refused to pay their war expenses until they returned the relic sward 'Sight-bringer' to him. The sword was borrowed 50 years prior as the only known thing to destroy Serina.
So, the Lord and Lady organize a party to go back to the island they fought Serina on 50 years ago. They are met with not only angry islanders, but huge deadly creatures, ghouls, vampires and evil dreams along their way. When their some of their party betrays them, they will need to fight harder then they ever had to in order to survive.
This book had some good battles, magic, betrayal and unexpected heroes. What more can you ask of a fantasy book. I did have to subtract 1 star for being a cliffhanger! I really hate cliffhangers. I don't see why an author can't finish or round out that story by the end of the book. Of course I know the story wasn't over, but this little section of it could have had some kind of conclusion.

This is the third full length novel I have read by William Stacey and I have been thoroughly impressed each time. I can safely say that he is now one of my favourite authors.

Blood fiends' bane has it all, a seemingly simple quest that soon becomes fraught with murder and betrayal.
The characters are believable and the descriptions of the scenery and battle scenes transport you right into the midst of it.

An amazing start to the series with a shocking twist at the end leaves me waiting (not very) patiently for book two!

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley for an honest review.

This was surprisingly good. Being that I'm not a big fan of vampire or paranormal books, I had lower expectations but after reading all the raving reviews I decided to give it a chance. I think one reviewer summed it up best by saying it "feels more like George Martin than Ann Rice".

I liked the darkness of the storytelling and how we got into the heads of the villains. I stayed interested until the end and will definitively be reading more by this author. Looking forward to book two.

Blood Fiends' Bane is an intense, thrilling, and horrifying book which combines fantasy and horror with the feal of a historical fiction. This is a unique vampire story that feels more like George Martin than Ann Rice. Terrific novel leaves the reader impatient for the next in the series.

Recommended for mature readers due to graphic violence and sexual content.

Disappointing, lots of words, little story.

Having enjoyed earlier work by Mr. Stacey, I was saddened to find that his vocabulary and dialogue was one dimensional, whole conversations could have been copy/pasted from his other work without notice. His individual characters lacked any unique traits to make them identifiable. Will look at other works with a jaundiced eye having been fooled once.

This is a gripping tale of legends, adventure, darkness, hope and monsters. The characters are unique, some smart and others conniving. The world building is excellent as is the writing style. There is a good balance of background, dialogue, action, and mystery. This is a great start to the series.
