Book Four and the dénouement of the Winter Jacket Series.
Hollywood had been a disaster. Elle Graft—Associate Professor of English and once-budding television screenwriter—could admit that much. Now back in Minnesota and back to her old life, Elle’s determined to get her relationship with Hunter back on track.
It all started with a broken classroom heater and a blue winter coat. How will it end?
Eliza Lentzski is the best-selling author of sapphic fiction, romance, and erotica including the Winter Jacket and Don’t Call Me Hero series. A historian by day, Eliza is passionate about telling the stories of marginalized communities.
Born and raised in the upper Midwest—a landscape that often shapes her novels—Eliza now lives in Boston with her wife and their cat, Charley.
Fantastic series! So sad to see their storybook romance maybe not continue on because it was such an up & down journey with both of them but all good things must come to an end because we/readers all witness their pain, break ups, intense love/pleasure that they have for each other, fantastic chemistry plus very graphic sex scenes, along with the support and contribution of their friends and families in this well written love story of a couple who chose to finally commit to each other. Even though one still have her issues and flaws but we as society all do in life and the author sure ended this series nicely. Highly recommend to everyone!
Review of All In, Winter Jacket 4 by Eliza Lentzski, audiobook narrated by Angela Dawe
Wow, this series on audio is such a treat! I’ve read Winter Jacket (book 1) years ago and absolutely loved it so when the series started to come out in audiobook narrated but no other than the magnificent Angela Dawe, I couldn’t wait to listen to them all.
This is book 4 and the final of the Winter Jacket series which also includes a prequel called Hunter (book 0). The rest of the series is formed by Winter Jacket (book 1), New Beginnings (book 2), and Finding Home (book 3). These books should be read in chronological order with maybe the exception of Hunter which tells part of the events in Winter Jacket 1 but from Hunter’s point of view. I’m not going to write my usual short description of the plot because there’s no way to do it without spoilers. Let’s just say that it’s the final part of Elle and Hunter’s love journey that started in book 1.
As I’ve said in my review of book 2, the tricky part of romance sequels is that it’s hard to keep the same tension and interest in a story when the main characters are already in an established relationship. No need to worry about this in the Winter Jacket series. I’m not sure how she does it, but Ms. Lentzski manages to keep the reader invested, the conflicts moving the plot forward and Elle and Hunter’s relationship extremely hot. Reading this series is like having a bird’s eye view or a fly on the wall perspective on their relationship which makes it very enjoyable to read. The dialogues are very well crafted and the characterisation of mains and secondaries is excellent.
If I have to make a list of the best characters in lesfic, Hunter Dyson would possibly be at the top. She’s a sweet, loving and mature character, the perfect counterpoint to Elle, who sometimes seems the younger one in terms of maturity despite of an age gap of more than a decade. As the series is mostly told from Elle’s point of view, the reader can fall in love a little with Hunter too. It doesn’t hurt that Ms. Dawe’s sultry voice for Hunter is sexy as hell. It makes the audiobook version of the series oh-so-worth it.
Apart from her stellar rendition of Hunter, Ms. Dawe’s narration of this series is fantastic. I’m always in awe of the diversity of voices, female or male, that she can produce. The performance of the different emotions is perfect as usual. It’s a pity to say goodbye to this series (Ms. Lentzski confirmed that she’s not going to release Hunter on audiobook). I recommend listening to books 1 to 4, they are all excellent. 5 stars.
And the curtain (finally) came down…. This is one series that I so thoroughly enjoyed reading as we learn all the ups and all the downs on the relationship between Hunter Dyson and Elle Graft. A wonderful read and very well-written. There were good times, some turbulence, angst and hot sexy scenes. As much as I loved the book, there were occasion where Elle got on my nerves and clearly she still has some issues, even when the curtain came down. Hunter is still my clear favourite even though Elle is supposed to be the matured one. But hey…. No one perfect so we will just have to embrace it all.
I am soooo in love with Hunter and Elle! I am going to go as far and say that they are more favourite couple that I have read in lesfic. When I saw that this book was available I dropped everything to read it! Luckily I wasn't disappointed. Basically book 4 is our reward for making it through book 3 with all the heart ache and angst.
The character growth in these two character was something I really enjoyed. To have them finally realise that the relationship is the most important thing and the outside factors shouldn't matter. I just loved every minute of this book.
I read somewhere that Eliza Lentzski has said this was the last book of the series however she wasn't shutting the door completely on these characters and this world. Possible spin offs in the future. All I can say is please, please make this happen! I can't get enough :)
Alrighty, is this it? Is this actually the end of Elle and Hunter's story? Amazon doesn't have to take any more of my money?
A decent end to the series in that case. I am still amazed by the author's ability to weave such an intriguing couple, even if I didn't like one of them half the time. Elle deserved a massive kick to the teeth in the earlier books, but she grew on me. In all honesty, not a lot happens in the series, plot wise. In this one there is some drama about Elle's premature promotion, but other than that, it's all about the two MCs navigating their relationship. And it worked for me. That took centre stage and the other bits were filler. I'm ok with this.
I don't remember been so caught up when I was reading the preceding books. The plot of All In is simple and straight-forward, basically a continuation from Book 3 Finding Home. The book is so well written that I see the scenes transpire before my eyes. All In is definitely the best book in the series for me.
I like this book and the ending, and I'm glad this series didn't turn out to be a really long, contrived disappointment, but I'm also pretty sad that it's over. A big part of me wants more. I mean, I'm excited to read any prequels or spin-offs that may get written, (or have already been written,) but I'm going to miss Elle as a narrator.
So, I like the plot, and I think it all makes sense with how Elle and Hunter's relationship was going, but I have a few questions.
That said, these things don't affect how much I like the book, overall. Parts of it, like the last third, I really like, and the characters also make up for anything I find weird. (And the sex is super hot this time like, more than usual.)
The characters are probably my favorite thing about this series, which is a bit funny because I started out not liking them much at all. Now I wish they all had their own books. (Not that I know if that's even on the author's radar.)
There are several inconsistencies with past books, but I'm used to it with Eliza Lentzski by now. I'm too much of a perfectionist to let it go though, so here it all is:
I guess this is the last actual hurrah of the series although there’s still Hunter’s story but this concludes the actual actual story. I love the ending. I mean, I dunno, I’m just so taken by the whole aspect of the series, I drank the cool-aid 5 chapters in book 1 ago so you can call me biased, obsessed, smitten. Yes, I am, thank you. So if student-professor romance is your thing, join the Hunter-Elle love affair.
PS I LOVE THE NICKNAME ELLIO. It’s the cutest most endearing nickname I’ve ever encountered!
Honestly thought it was the weakest of the series. It felt like a hurry and wrap things up. Disappointing...I loved this series and loved the characters, but didn't feel this ending.
The Winter Jacket series is one of the most re-readable series in contemporary lesbian romance today. Fans of Eliza Lentzski’s writing would agree. Her brilliance as storyteller gives shine to this lovely five-book series. Her characters are positively appealing and the narrative is absolutely absorbing; readers fall in love with this series a little more with each book.
The characters are gloriously developed, providing readers with two lovely, intelligent women that they want to return to time after time. The Winter Jacket series is a bit of a journey; it’s complex and messy at times, but tender and sweet at others. However, it all works to fuel a healthy indulgence of page turning perfection.
The protagonist in this series is alluring and intense, but she makes it sing like nobody’s business. Letzski gets this character’s development right in so many ways. She understands that this character must be sympathetic, driven and honorable, and that is exactly what Professor Elle Graft is. Her top priority is to gain tenure at the college in which she teaches; she is determined to succeed and climb the academic ladder. She is a respectable woman, but her quirks and complexities sometimes get in her way. Her constant need to maintain strict control provokes certain fears and vulnerabilities within her. However, this ultimately endears her to the readers. They develop an empathetic attitude towards her and her fissures.
The other fetching feature of this series is Hunter Dyson. Hunter is Elle’s lover and she expands the lungs of this series in ways readers rarely see from a love interest. She is girl-next-door sweet and she adds loads of appreciable interest to the story. The two share a sexual energy that is quite palatable and nothing short of addicting. She is the perfect counterpart for Elle; she is joy-filled hope, where Elle is heavy-hearted worry. She balances Elle’s life and makes it more interesting. Yet, at the same time, she complicates it. Lentzski uses Hunter as a tool to facilitate a dramatic change in Elle and it plays out on the page masterfully.
Holding the interest of readers in a multi-book series can be tricky, but Lentzski muscles through this with ease. There’s not a saggy book in the bunch. Her secret is this: she makes use of captivating and engaging themes and tropes, namely age gap and student/teacher. These choices intensify the storytelling, making it more compelling and involved. Lentzski’s narrative has Elle and Hunter meeting in a college class that Elle teaches. As if that doesn’t make things interesting enough, their ten-year age gap works to stretch the dramatic tension even farther. These tangled, twisty themes and tropes provide substantial interest and plot potential. Furthermore, they allow the readers the opportunity to revel in the actions and motivations of the characters.
The series contains five books in total and they are all told in first person. While the first four books are told from Elle’s point of view, book five, a prequel, is told from Hunter’s perspective. Hunter’s shape is filled out a bit more when given this vantage point. Interesting insights to other characters and their role in the story world are also provided with this lens. Concluding the series in this manner might be a bit unconventional, but it works. Hunter is a substantial character and it feels right to give her center stage, even if it is only for a bit.
Lentzski has curated this whole series with diligent dedication and passion. Perhaps that’s why these characters have come to mean so much to readers; they feel her love for them. Because of that, Lentzski succeeds in making Elle and Hunter’s story jump off the page. Readers understand these characters. They care about them. How can they not? Lentzski paints them as compelling, principled individuals. They are written honestly and intelligently. Their voice is believable and relatable, and readers can not resist returning.
As a side note, Winter Jacket fans and lesbian romance aficionados alike can enjoy the first four books of this series in audiobook format. Lentzski handpicked the very talented Angela Dawe to narrate this series and they can not be recommended enough. Dawe delivers an impressive performance, enhancing Lentzski’s characterization ever so gracefully. Her seductive voice titillates the romance and makes the storytelling simply mesmerizing. I listen to the Winter Jacket series at least once a year and swoon over Dawe’s voice every time.
Series strengths…
contains a story world readers want to return to filled with interesting, dynamic and relatable characters central conflict and dramatic tension sustains readers’ interest each book’s plot advances the series arc and moves it in a clear direction
4.25 stars I have mixed feelings about this series. It has one of the most flawed, infuriating MCs I've come across in lesfic in Associate Professor Elle Graft, contrasted with one of the most endearing - her decade younger girlfriend/former student Hunter Dyson. It has editing issues that are significantly easier to overlook with Angela Dawe’s fantastic narration, but a better editor would have made this a five star experience. Lentzski is a good storyteller, so I am hopeful some of those issues have since been resolved. This installment, along with some of the others, were too sex-focused at times (and I say this as someone who really enjoys sex in my books.) Especially when Elle had the opportunity to demonstrate how much she loved Hunter, instead she made it sexual. It made it difficult to enjoy some of those moments. There were times that I was so disappointed in Elle's actions and/or reactions that I sometimes wondered if she was worthy of Hunter's adoration. It's been said before, but in spite of Elle being older and more highly educated, Hunter was certainly the more mature and centered of the two. The bonus of the audiobook is Dawe's voice for Hunter, which is delicious. The conclusion was interesting, but almost too fast. There was a pretty major loose end with only 20 minutes left in the audiobook and I wondered how the heck that was going to be resolved. Quickly, yet open-endedly is the answer. While this book was written back in 2016 and Lentzski hasn't ruled out ever writing about them again, nothing but the prequel Hunter released one year later has been written since. And because I love her character so much, I'm going to read that for sure. And soon. While some of the supporting characters are intriguing and likable, others like Troian are so juvenile. I wouldn't mind English Department Dean Jessica Merlot getting her own book - who is just beginning to explore the joys of her sexuality. The family dynamics between both Elle and Hunter's families were well done and believable. While I didn’t particularly like book one and wouldn’t have continued if Dawe hadn’t narrated them, in the end I’m glad I stuck with it. These characters grew on me and I look forward to Hunter's early story from her perspective. Too bad that one's not on audio.
Am i happy with this book? Winter Jacket is so good compared to all the sequels. Feels like Elle doesnt really grow up after all. Anyways, its a good read and i like the authors writing style. Just wish that both of them have a real good relationship advancement though.
Well done. What an enjoyable direct and to the point read. Addressing the question of why they should be together is met head on as they negotiate one challenge after another. Relationships are messy and if you want it to work over the long haul you must put forth effort because there is a big different between falling in love and staying in love.
I enjoyed this book very much. There's a lot of love and A LOT of teasing which I was really pleased with. I also adore these loving nicknames like Ellio and Bookie.
I like Jessica and how her relationship with Elle develops. It's cool that there were no hard feelings when Elle rejected her hitting on. And I especially liked Elle in her new 'Troian style' role as a matchmaker. Funny teasing, watching Jess and Leah's first date behind a magazine, lol :) Elle seems to genuinely care for Jess's happiness.
I usually like first-person narratives because it makes me really connect with the story teller, how they, and by extension me, don't know what other people think. But I also want to know other people's thoughts: Hunter or Troi. So I'm really looking forward to reading Hunter prequel.
I truly loved the book! This has been indeed a wonderful series! Eliza is a gifted and prolific author. Her style of writing just "hooks you". Particularly in this series. Elle and Hunter have been truly an enchanting couple that you just want to love all the time. I would really love it if the author would at least give us one more book to see if there are any wedding bells in the horizon and they get to seat at the "married only" table after all. Also, Dean Merlot and Leah should get a story of their own, that would be cute. Looking forward to more of this author's books!!!
Very nice ending to Elle's and Hunter's story. I wish there was an epilogue to answer the questions of whether or not they get married and whether or not Vivian got the grandchild she so desperately wanted from Elle. This is a series that I will revisit in the future.
I don't want the series to be over. It can't end here! Please write more. I am so in love wth Elle and Hunter and their whole world. Smart writing, heartwarming characters and oh yea, kinda hot too. Gonna miss them all!
I love this series and I think I love it because it's a series. I've grown to really know the characters although I do not like the main characters best friend.
Plot: This starts with Elle and Hunter reconnecting along with Jessica offering Elle the highest teaching position possible in order to start a screen writing program at the college. Elle isn’t sure about skipping so far ahead in her career. However Jessica is getting pressured by the higher ups at the college and makes a public announcement which forces Elle to accept the position. Jessica later apologizes and Elle decides to try to make the best of the situation.
Elle’s coworkers start giving her the cold shoulder and being generally rude to her because they are mad that she is skipping so far ahead of them in her career and don’t think she deserves it. Elle spends time with Hunter and Jessica together so Hunter can get to know Jessica and won’t be jealous anymore.
Elle and Hunter go to the wrap party for the show that Elle worked on. Hunter is able to meet some of the people Elle worked with. After they return they go to Hunter’s parents for Easter dinner and Elle is able to make some progress getting acceptance from her family. Elle also sets Jessica up on a blind date that turns out well.
Elle enlists Troian’s help to stir up excitement for her screen writing program. Elle’s coworkers are continuously rude to Elle but her plan works and lots of students enroll. Elle’s coworkers awkwardly apologize for their behavior before the end of the school year.
Elle goes to visit her family. Elle’s sister keeps giving her a hard time for never visiting or keeping in touch. When Hunter arrives Elle’s sister gives her a bit of a cold shoulder but slowly starts to thaw as she gets to know Hunter. Elle discovers an engagement ring in Hunter’s suitcase and internally panics. Hunter is hurt by Elle’s rejection. Hunter has been having nightmares throughout the book and reveals that they were always about Elle leaving. Elle stumbles upon the perfect engagement ring for Hunter and gives it to her as a sort of commitment ring but not quite an engagement. Their increased commitment to each other settles Hunter’s mind and starts off their HEA.
Characterization: Elle a different person compared to the start of the series. She is 100% committed to Hunter and is confident in her priorities in life.
Hunter suffers from anxiety about Elle leaving again in this book. She is back to being committed to making their relationship work.
Writing: This was written in first person perspective from Elle’s POV. I found a couple typos in this book but overall it was a fun easy read.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Nooooooooooooo, how can this be the end of it? It wasn't enough, you guys! Like for real.
Hunter and Elle were one of the most unexpected couples I got the pleasure to meet and love since I began reading my romances. Also, I'm always reticent with age gap with one of the parts being on their early 20s so I didn't start the reading as open to it as I normally am, but let me tell you something: I loved it and am very glad I gave it a shot. It was sweet, fun, with the right touch of angst and a lot of individual and relationship growth for these two.
The final book I honestly think shouldn't be the last. They have so much yet to live and us to peek into hehehe. I mean, I think things happened the way they should, romantically and other ways speaking, but it's just too soon to part ways with them. I'm greedy, folks.
I think it's important to do a recant here. Troian also went from obnoxious annoying friend to slightly embarrassing friend and she grew on me like a bad fungus. I'll miss Nikolle and her along Jessica were the highlights of side characters, but I'll miss everyone else too.
This was a really good series that I'm sad I was late to the party, but glad I make it all the same.
I loved following the journey of Elle and Hunter, watching their relationship developed and stabilizes. You are instantly thrown into their lives and the story takes off at a quick pace. I loved the writing style, the humor and the banter particularly between Elle and Troian. This fourth installment gives excellent closure which is a definite bonus to me. It was like the icing on the cake. The characters are written in a way that made them real, irresistible and amazingly hot. The storyline is addictive and compelling. An unforgettable series!
I Absolutely love the last book of Winter Jacket series. For I almost wasn’t be able to finish book #1 originally, and this series just got better and better as the story progressed. I love seeing how the main characters, Elle and Hunter, went through all the ups and downs of their relationship and still their love endures. The excellent storytelling by the author has been keeping me deeply hooked. As mush as I don’t want to see the end of the story of Elle & Hunter, it has come to end eventually, and satisfyingly. Highly recommended!
Sharing Elle and Hunter’s journey was heart warming and profound for me. Despite the obstacles: insecurities, jealousy, fears, family issues … their love was stronger because of them. Their best friends, Troian and Nik were wonderfully supportive and hopeful for their coming together. A wonderful series and a very good read. I heartily recommend this and any other works by this author. I’m looking forward to reading more of this author’s works. Thank you Peace
I love the Winter Jacket's series. It was a wonderful story and well written But for this book I hope there's an epilogue. Although this is the last book on the series the author left open for another sequel or at least a spin-off in another book. I hope that happens I really enjoy Ellio and Hunter relationship and the end was good but I want more.
This finale to the Winter Jacket series brought some closure for some issues the main characters had struggled with since the previous book. They got some closure and resolvement, while other characters also benefited in the story. There are a few new beginnings, and an endearing happy ending.
I just love this series. The character development of Ellie and Hunter is phenomenal. The writing is amazing, and I just want to keep reading. I really hope there’s one more book at least. I need a wedding and a happily ever after. Ellie as a mom would be incredible. Don’t leave us hanging, Eliza!
