Ooohh good one with plenty of twists!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I loved a few things about this book.
1) The story is not what you think.
2) The plot actually had some great twists and interest other than sex and hockey
I have enjoyed many books by L.P. Dover and this one was a bit of a surprise with the plot. When the cover leads you to assumptions about the content, you can get hung up on that. We are expecting a sports style read, judging from the gorgeous hunk of body going on. This is Not one and I was so happy about that!
This story has a bit of depth and some surprises along the way! Made me enjoy the heck out of this book! That is not to say there is not a lot of sexy heat along the way... oh, there is! But you get so much more with this one.
There may be some triggers in this for some.
I don't know how it's taken me this long to read this story since I've read all the others in this series already, but I'm glad I finally went back and read this one. Kellan and Kristen were both enjoyable characters and it was fun getting to see how they first met after seeing them already together in the next books.
I can't say it was my favorite Breakaway novel though since there were things that just didn't make sense to me while reading. Mostly the fact that Kristen was supposedly on the run and yet she was spilling her secrets after one date. But I still thought the connection between her and Kellan was very well developed and I liked seeing them together
This was my first book to author L. P. Dover and I must admit that it wasn't what I expected at all.
I am a cover bitch. Unless the author is already known to me, most of my bought, requested or borrowed books are based on the cover or the blurb, the reason why Hard Stick sat on my kindle the moment I saw it on Netgalley.
When I'm picking sports romance novel to read then I'm expecting to find some sport. The rush of adrenaline, the thrill of success and the aggressiveness of the players on the field and in the locker rooms that's what I most love about a sports romance.
When I read about Kellan, his hard stick and how he knows how to use it, I was sold
description
but when I started reading the book I realised that the story was more about Kristen and her secrets than about Kellan, his stick or Ice hockey.
description
I can't say that this story wasn't enjoyable, it really was. Let's just say that the story and the cover don't go together.
Kristen used to have it all, a successful job, a wealthy gorgeous boyfriend and a place that she could finally call home, but everything would be destroyed the moment she realised that she was dealing with a sick married boyfriend who would stop at nothing to have her even killing the friend who tried to save her.
Changing her name and starting from scratch was the only way to keep Kristen safe from being killed, and though bartending had nothing to do with designing, it at least paid her bills.
Kellan lived for hockey, women in his life were no longer a priority until he was challenged to ask the mysterious waitress for a date.
“Dallas nudged me in the side, his voice low so Kristen couldn’t hear him. “Wanna make a bet?” he asked slyly. “On what?”
“On your girl over there. I say five hundred dollars you can’t get her to go out with you by the end of the week.” Braeden chuckled. “And I’ll bet three hundred.” They both grinned and held out their hands. Sealing the deal, I shook them. “You’re on, fuckers.”
Kellan wanted to teach his friends a good lesson but the moment he met Kristen out of the bar and got to know her, he realised that one date would never be enough especially that he knew her secrets and her fears.
Hard Stick is a book about new beginnings and how love could heal damaged wounds.
When I opened Hard Stick by Leslie P. Dover, I expected a hot hockey romance. What I got was so much MORE!!! Hard Stick is not a light hockey romance. It's a story of danger and desire meets strength and survival. Hard Stick is a fast-paced, heart-thrashing thriller meets hockey romance.
Beautiful bartender, Kristen, and hot hockey captain, Kellan, are MAGIC together!!! They have a combustible chemistry that is unstoppable and both are kind souls. I LOVED them! These two characters are connected, perhaps by fate, must battle for love in the ultimate test of strength and survival.
One night was all they had...
"You say this is our only night, but you're fooling yourself. I wasn't the only one who enjoyed that kiss."
But one night was not enough...
"I'm not rushing you, buttercup. I'll go at your pace."
Not when they had to fight for each other...
Time stood still as everything came crashing down.
An ADRENALINE RUSH of a read, Hard Stick is full of twists and turns I didn't see coming. CHILLS ran through me from a powerful plot that is pure SPINE-TINGLING SUSPENSE. Hard Stick is a drug of a movie that played in my head while reading.
More suspense-thriller than sports romance, Hard Stick is a fierce and fast-moving story I chased to the end. This romance is nail-biting, pulse-pounding pleasure! An EXPLOSION IN WORDS, this edge-of-your-seat adventure is one you must take.
💋💋💋💋 buttercup kisses
I really wish that this book came with the warning of very little hockey and a lot more drama than necessary.. in fact it should be a mafia/FBI book! Within 3 chapters your head will spin out of control from all the drama... the time jump was unnecessary and I couldn't feel any connection between the hero and heroine... I'm still trying to figure what I read.. this author sadly is a hit or miss for me yet again
This is not a sports romance. The hero happens to be a hockey player, but the story isn't really about that at all. Its really about a girl in the witness protection program. This book is really more of a contemporary romance similar to her Second Chances series, just about a hockey team instead of a football team.
Kristen picked the WRONG guy. Now, because of it, she is living in a town under a different name and has to fake her own death to try and get him to abandon his pursuit of her. Throwing a wrench in her plan? Kellan, the pro hockey player who comes into the bar/restaurant she works at. He makes no bones about his desire to get her to date him. She wishes she could, but dating is just not in the cards for her.
I have found that most LP Dover books read quick. She typically tends to jump right in and I appreciate that! There are a couple of characters from previous series' of hers (Armed and Dangerous, Gloves Off, Second Chances) but you don't need to have read it. For those of us who have read it, it is just a nice little cameo!
Kellan is not like your typical pro athletes. He isn't a puck bunny chaser. He isn't a man whore. He really is just a nice guy who happens to play professional hockey. He is...dare I say it...NORMAL! How could you not love him!? I wanted him to break through Kristen's barriers because he deserved happiness as much as she did. I am curious to see if the rest of the series keeps this more romantic suspense bend or if it becomes more of a sports romance story.
Ok, now having said that, let me address some of the issues I had. First, she got her degree in Interior Design from MIT. They don't offer degrees in Interior Design. Maybe she got a degree in Architectural studies...But still. You don't go to MIT to be an interior designer. That just doesn't make good sense. You go to a famous design school like Savannah Art and Design, Rhode Island Design, or something. Second, after her first date with Kellan, she tells him about her past, her name change, and faking her own death. WitSec rule number one is you can't tell anyone anything!
I did think the surprise twist was interesting. I hadn't even THOUGHT anything like that. However, the rest of the book is pretty predictable. Overall, this was a good story: good characters, good plot, but not great. I enjoyed it and read it in a few hours, but I probably will forget all about it among the sea of other books I read.
Hard Stick
Breakaway # 1
L.P. Dover
This was so not the story I was expecting. It was so much more. This isn't your typical sport romance novel. From the first chapter to the last , you will be wanting more.
On the ice, I’m Kellan Carter, powerhouse enforcer for the Charlotte Strikers. Off the ice, I’m just a regular guy. The last thing I want is to get mobbed by a bunch of groupies who are only after me for my fame and money. My ideal woman knows how to enjoy a little good, clean fun—and maybe some not-so-clean fun too. That’s the kind of girl I’d never let go.
When Kristen Robinson, the gorgeous, down-to-earth bartender I’ve been crushing on, agrees to let me take her out, I’m thrilled. We have an amazing night together, culminating in the most electrifying kiss of my life—and that’s it. Kristen tells me we can’t see each other again, but I know that kiss meant as much to her as it did to me. What I don’t know is that Kristen has a dangerous secret. . .
I’ve proved to Kristen that she can trust me with her body and her heart. But when her past comes back to haunt her, I need to prove that she can trust me with her life. And I might have to get my hands dirty after all.
Such an awesome read. I will definitely be looking for more books by L.P. Dover in the future. Can't wait for the next one in this series to come out. Thanks NetGalley for the arc in exchange for my honest review.
Hard Stick by LP Dover is the perfect book if you are looking for suspense and a little action packed in with some hockey...I do love my sports books.
Its too late when Kristen realizes the man that she is involved with isn't who she thought he was. A controlling, obsessed liar, Mitchell makes sure that everything happens the way that he wants it to, no matter what the casualties may be. Her only option is to run with the clothes on her back and change her name until Mitchell is behind bars.
Kellan is the captain of his hockey team and has had his eye on the red headed waitress at Sammy's for a while now. She refuses to go out with him until she finds out about a bet he made with his teammates.
Kristen begins to fall for Kellan and hopes that he doesn't run away when he learns about her past. Will they make it as a couple of will Mitchell and the choices of her past read them apart?
Thank you to NetGalley for giving me an ARC of this book!
This is my first book by this author. I requested for an ARC bec sports romances are one of my favorite tropes. But the best thing I can say about the story is that it was bland. Not quite meh. Not bad. Just bland. I finished it but am I keeping it on my Kindle? Nope. Sorry.
1) I think the problem is that there was too much going on but the author didn't really delve deeper into the critical themes/issues that were outlined. Scenes were described in an offhand manner, as if they were narrated in passing ... making them seem as if they weren't important when in fact, these scenes were turning points.
2) I couldn't relate to either of the main characters. Both of them are written without depth. It almost feels as what's written on the blurb is all you'll get to know about them as you don't get insight into their thoughts and feelings. I found it strange. Furthermore, there were too many ICK triggers for me (mainly related to Kristen) that made me dislike her. Like from a personal standpoint, I don't know how Kellan can get past them without being disgusted. Don't want to spoil anything but for me.... UGH. Just no.
3) I'm also disappointed bec I thought this was going to be a hockey themed romance but it is SO not the case. More like a weird mash up of hockey/mafia in a new adult romance. So as a sports fan, there's not enough hockey written in the book to satisfy me.
Wow! I couldn't put this down.
Hard Stick is not what I expected at all. Yes the main character is a hockey player but the main focus is on Kristen.
Kristen is on the run from her crazy, ruthless and powerful ex and with the help of the FBI changes her identity, fakes her own death and starts a new life.
Kristen works in a bar where Charlotte strikers hockey team regularly meet up.
Kellan has been relentlessly trying to get Kristen to go out with him for a year.
With the Faking of Kristen death she decides to stop looking over her shoulder and try and live again.
Kellan isn't the stereotype sports star like most of his manwhore team mates, he's the captain of the team and what you would call a sensible and career focused guy.
When Kellan finally gets to take Kristen out your pantys melt, he is so damn swoon-worthy and hot, a perfect match for Kristen who has had more than her fair share of heartache.
With angst,danger, hotness,heartache,great characters and heartwarming moments, Hard Stick is a perfect rollercoaster contemporary romance read that I couldn't put down.
A stand-alone told in dual pov's and leads to a hea.
This book and I didn't really get along. I think it was because there was a guy with a hockey stick on the cover, but this was more of a romantic suspense book where the guy happened to played hockey. The suspense was good, the romance was OK, but in the back of my mind, I kept waiting for the hockey romance element.
WOW!!!! Totally not at all what I expected. I went by title,author and cover. The saying goes don't judge a book by its cover is true to this. L.P. Dover totally has your mouth drop and edge of your seat. Lots of excitement. She did a wonderful job on thus story. The characters were wonderful. Fighting for what you want in life and doing all you have to do to survive!!! L.P. Dover really knows how to throw a few great twists in a story. The author did that with a couple of the characters in ways I NEVER would have guessed until a certain point in the book. I was totally drawn into the story and did not want to put it down cause I had to know what was going to happen next. Look forward to reading more books by L.P. Dover.
3.5/5 - I almost feel awful for not liking this book, because the general consensus seems to be that Kellan is a sexy mofo and these two are great together, but I just didn't feel it.
But let me explain! First off, the characters just felt a little... generic? to me. It isn't really so much that Kellan was a bad character, because he wasn't, I just don't think he was much of a character at all. And that's something that I find is common with the male component of M/F romance novels. The male character is usually very stereotypical "macho man" who secretly has feelings but we only touch the surface of them? and he's all protective and kind of treats Kristen like she can't handle herself even though she clearly can? I don't know. It wasn't like he did anything that obviously gave me those impressions, but he just gave me weird vibes and I didn't care much for his character. M/F books aren't usually my thing and the relationship dynamic between Kellan and Kristen is exactly why. There wasn't anything blatantly wrong with it, most M/F romance readers actually usually consider it a great element of a book, it just wasn't my cup of tea.
And I'll be honest, Kellan's demeanor kind of just put me off the entire book. The plot was great and I really liked Kristen, but I just couldn't get past him. It's kind of bothering me that I don't really know how articulate what exactly it was about him that I didn't like but I don't know. I'm usually an M/M reader and I've never had this issue with a gay MC but this is a problem I frequently have with M/F books, which is why I'm usually so selective of which ones I choose to read.
In any case, take this review with a grain of salt. It wasn't my cup of tea but the 4.14 average review on goodreads says that I'm on my own with this one. If you're a fan of the whole macho man sweaty and muscled locker room kind of thing, then this might be right up your alley!!
Kristen's life was about to change she never would have thought her life would end up on the run getting mixed up with Mitchell was the biggest mistake of her life he was obsessive and he would always find her but was she strong enough to fight back to get her life back after he tried to destroy hers
Kellan lived his life on the ice a professional ice hockey player he had everything he could want except a good woman until he meets Kirsten would he be able to break down her walls and give him a chance and would he be able to handle all her secrets when they were revealed
This story had me gripped from the first pages another great book from L.P Dover she's become one of my favourite authors x
When I got this book, I thought it was going to be a hockey romance book. It wan not and it was more of a mafia/crazy ex book more than anything. That is not my type of book. So, in all honesty, I did not finish this book because for me it dragged. Just not my cup of tea!
Oh my goodness I hated this book.
So, let's start at the beginning. Apparently I asked my library to add this book to their e-holdings. I do not remember doing this, but I've been on a sports romance kick lately and this is a hockey romance, so I probably did, because they sent me an email saying, "We got that book in for you," so I read it.
That was my first mistake.
Okay, one, this is not a hockey romance. This is a romance in which the hero is a hockey player. There's a difference. Also, I am using the word hockey very loosely here, because I am fairly certain the author has never actually watched hockey. She calls the boards walls or glass repeatedly, but never boards, she thinks the Stanley Cup is a single game, his team is undefeated in February? They only play games on the weekend? Back to back? He drives his truck to away games in other states? The Stanley Cup is in June? I'm very confused about how she thinks professional sports works. If you know anything about hockey, do not read this book, because it will irritate you.
And then we get to the heroine. Now, she is just too stupid to live. She's in witness protection, but not really, because she never testifies, but her buddies in the FBI get her a new identity because she's been dating a guy who turns out to be in the mafia or something, and he basically goes crazy psycho and kills her best male friend because nobody else can touch her so she runs away and her FBI friends get her a new identity and help her fake her death, and what does she do? She basically spills her guts about how she is in hiding because of her ex-boyfriend after like one date. Also, she basically moves back to right near her hometown while with a new identity, and lives in one of her FBI friend's houses. Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...
Um, how about no. No, that is not the way things work. Also, FBI people doing all sorts of crap without warrants or orders or anything but just because? Including shooting people?
And then you have the hero, who threatens various bad guys with prison rape. Now, I know they're the bad guys, but threatening people with rape, even if it will be inflicted by other people and not yourself, is not okay. Also, he beats up one of the bad guys, who is tied to a chair, with his hockey stick. Also, not okay. Also, FBI involved in this 'interrogation' which is basically grounds for any and all information gained from the interrogation being tossed out.
Can you tell this book has nothing to do with hockey? I really like sports in my sports romances, and this one had almost none, but on the other hand, that's probably a good thing because if she had written more hockey, she would have just screwed it up.
And then you have the whole unprotected sex from the first time with no discussion of birth control or past partners or health or nothing like that. Which is bad.
And then the professional baker deciding to start a line of strawberry cupcakes in November? Uh, no. She'd want fresh berries.
And I think the author had no idea what an interior designer does, because she keeps treating her like a decorator, but that's different.
And the writing is just clunky and insipid to boot.
So, yeah, this turned into a hate read. And the cover totally lies.
Synopsis:
He carries a big stick. And he’s not afraid to use it.
On the ice, I’m Kellan Carter, powerhouse enforcer for the Charlotte Strikers. Off the ice, I’m just a regular guy. The last thing I want is to get mobbed by a bunch of groupies who are only after me for my fame and money. My ideal woman knows how to enjoy a little good, clean fun—and maybe some not-so-clean fun too. That’s the kind of girl I’d never let go.
When Kristen Robinson, the gorgeous, down-to-earth bartender I’ve been crushing on, agrees to let me take her out, I’m thrilled. We have an amazing night together, culminating in the most electrifying kiss of my life—and that’s it. Kristen tells me we can’t see each other again, but I know that kiss meant as much to her as it did to me. What I don’t know is that Kristen has a dangerous secret. . . .
I’ve proved to Kristen that she can trust me with her body and her heart. But when her past comes back to haunt her, I need to prove that she can trust me with her life. And I might have to get my hands dirty after all.
My Thoughts:
This is the first time I have read anything by this author and I enjoyed her writing style and I definitely will check out more of her work, however, I am torn about this book. Did I like it? Yes I did. So what’s the catch? I thought it was a sports romance, but it’s more like romantic suspense, so I was taken off guard and it wasn’t what I was expecting. It did have some hockey and about Kellen’s team, but a lot more going on than just a typical sports romance. So see, not really a bad thing.
The first four chapters were about Kristen and the set up for her meeting Kellen. The characters are developed and they have great chemistry. This book doesn’t rush their romance and there are twists and turns that I didn’t see coming, which is a good surprise. The story kept me involved until the end. I really did enjoy this book and look forward to more in this series.
If you want a great romance with a lot of drama, suspense and hot hockey players, then this is the book for you.
L. P. Dover scores with HARD STICK the first book in the Breakaway series. Charlotte Strikers’ enforcer, Kellan Carter, falls for bartender, Kristen Robinson. Kristen is reluctant to get involved with Kellan due to her daunting past. This contemporary sports romance is suitable for adult audiences. It takes place in Boston and North Carolina.
HARD STICK was amazing. The plot had a little of everything: mystery, drama, conspiracy, romance, hockey, tragedy, humor, and hope.
The characters are well-developed and believable. Kristen was a compelling heroine who had a misfortunate past. She is strong and brave. My heart went out to her. She has some loyal and amazing friends. I love Kellan. He is the captain of the Charlotte Striker NHL team. He is hardworking and determined. He is protective and reliable. He is creative when setting up his dates with Kristen. The two have wonderful chemistry and make an outstanding couple.
Mitchell Blackwell makes a fascinating advisory. He is power hungry and controlling. He is a dangerous man who cannot be trusted.
I enjoyed the story line. It had a lot of substance and felt meaningful. There were excellent twists. HARD STICK is skillfully written. It had a great pace that is tough to put down. I enjoyed the epilogue. It felt well concluded. I am looking forward to Dallas Easton’s story in the next book in the series, BLOCKED. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
~ 5 Not What You Expect Stars ~
Hard Stick is truly a book that is a case of Don’t Judge a Book By It’s Cover, but in the BEST way possible.
This is my first L.P. Dover book and I am extremely happy I took a chance on a new author to me. After reading this book it just means I now have to go back and read all of her books.
This was an AMAZING book!!!! I will warn you if you go into this book hoping for a hockey romance story, you will be slightly disappointed. Yes Hockey does play a small part in this book, since Kellan is a NHL player, but the story doesn’t really focus on the hockey aspect. This is more of a story based off Kristen learning how to survive and learning to trust and love again.
This story has a little bit of everything in it. There were some laughs, some sex, some romance, , great friendships, suspense and even some heartache. This book had everything I look for in a 5 star read. I was completely engrossed in this story from the very beginning. I honestly couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. I loved how this story all unfolded. Some of it was predictable, but there were enough surprises along the way to keep me guessing. I thought the flow and pace of this story was very well written. I also loved the storyline and characters we met along the way. Kellan truly stole my heart in this book.
In Hard Stick we follow the journey of Kellan and Kristen. I really can’t tell you a lot about the story because you need to experience everything for yourself. Plus I don’t want to spoil anything for anyone. Kristen is a woman, who due to circumstances and tragedy, needs to escape and start a new life for herself. And that’s exactly what she does. Now she is a keep to herself bartender in a small pub. But that doesn’t mean she hasn’t caught the eye of the local HOTTIE Kellan, the famous NHL player who lives in the area. Over the last year she has turned down every attempt he has made for a date. but now she is ready to give it a try. What can 1 date do?? Little does she know, Kellan doesn’t give up so easily :) I truly loved their love story. Kellan will have all the readers swooning and wishing for a man like him.
I would 100% recommend this book to anyone who loves a story that has a little bit of everything in it. If you’re looking for a storyline that will suck you in and characters you will fall in love with and want more of, then this is the book to read!!!
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of the book.
I so thoroughly enjoyed this book; it had so many components I just love in romance. It's not a straight sports romance - while the male lead (Kellan) is the captain of a professional hockey team, that is not the main focus of the book. He is handsome and GOOD and emotionally available and GOOD - without being a sap or a punk (there's a fine line there). Kristen (the female lead) is hiding from a troubled and dangerous past but I love that she is being proactive in protecting herself and that she decides to take a chance to get to know Kellan (after turning down his advances for a year). Because of that history, when they finally do start seeing each other, it doesn't feel like insta-love, so the progression of their relationship makes sense. There was a great element of suspense throughout the book and a big plot twist about half way through (I figured it out early but thought it was a great plot point) that really made Hard Stick a page turner for me. I really look forward to reading more from L.P. Dover and the Breakaway series - in fact, there were clues about the characters in the next book and I was able to get it from NetGalley, so I'll definitely be reading it ASAP! I give Hard Stick 4 out 5 wine glasses and can't wait for more!
ARC NetGalley
I really loved how serious it started...I wasn't expecting "serious". I thought fluff and flirting. Well, "serious" was suspenseful and horrible.
I enjoyed how Kirsten took her survival seriously with training and exercise. She was a strong smart woman!
Kellan was perfect. I liked how the story had a nice flow and when Kellan and "Ten" got engaged we were happy for them.
Lots of surprises keeps us in suspense. Kellan is a great book boyfriend!!
Thanks to author for ARC as it was a pleasure.
Kellan really doesn't like being cut off from sex, "grabbing her ***, I held her to me so she could feel what she did to me. “I have plenty of testosterone, buttercup. You can’t do this to me.” I liked this book, Kellan was such a good guy.
ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date: June 13, 2017
He carries a big stick. And he’s not afraid to use it.
On the ice, I’m Kellan Carter, powerhouse enforcer for the Charlotte Strikers. Off the ice, I’m just a regular guy. The last thing I want is to get mobbed by a bunch of groupies who are only after me for my fame and money. My ideal woman knows how to enjoy a little good, clean fun—and maybe some not-so-clean fun too. That’s the kind of girl I’d never let go.
When Kristen Robinson, the gorgeous, down-to-earth bartender I’ve been crushing on, agrees to let me take her out, I’m thrilled. We have an amazing night together, culminating in the most electrifying kiss of my life—and that’s it. Kristen tells me we can’t see each other again, but I know that kiss meant as much to her as it did to me. What I don’t know is that Kristen has a dangerous secret. . . .
I’ve proved to Kristen that she can trust me with her body and her heart. But when her past comes back to haunt her, I need to prove that she can trust me with her life. And I might have to get my hands dirty after all.
••••••••••
REVIEW: 3.75 stars--HARD STICK is the first installment in L.P.Dover’s contemporary, adult BREAKAWAY sports, romance series focusing on the men and women of the professional hockey team The Charlotte Strikers. This is team captain Kellan Carter, and bartender/interior designer Kristen Robinson’s story line.
Told from dual first person perspectives (Kristen and Kellan) HARD STOCK focuses on Kristen Robinson’s fight for her freedom from a controlling ex. On the run, following the murder of her best friend Cole, Kristen finds herself in Charlotte, North Carolina, falling for the team captain of the Charlotte Strikers. What ensues is the building relationship between Kristen and Kellan, and Kristen’s struggle to stay one step ahead of her past.
The relationship between Kristen and Kellan is one of immediate attraction but due to her past, Kristen keeps everyone at a distance fearing the possibility of retribution and revenge. In hiding, with a new identity, Kristen will come face to face with her past-a man who is determined to keep Kristen to himself. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of sexually graphic language and text.
We are introduced to several members of the Charlotte Strikers- alternate captains Dallas Easton and Braeden Wallace, Coach Carlisle, and rookie Maddox Ledger, as well as Kristen’s friends Brooklyn, Brooklyn’s brother and FBI agents Jason Avery and his wife Aylee; Kellan’s mother Mary, and long suffering father Graham Carter. The requisite evil is all too familiar to our story line couple.
HARD STICK is first and foremost a story of suspense as the hockey trope takes a backseat to our heroine’s battle with her past. There is a twist in the story that I suspected early on but a twist, none the less. The premise is entertaining but there are definitely some over the top scenarios as it pertains to the suspense, mystery and take down; the characters are charismatic and colourful; the romance is seductive and provocative. HARD STICK is a dramatic, intense and enjoyable read.
My Review:
This book had its ups and downs for me. Those first couple of chapters were riveting...and more than a little heartbreaking. I enjoy romantic suspense so that aspect of the story line worked for me.
There were a few other things that worked for me...
* the book was easy to read. I didn't have any problem sticking with the book or the book dragging at all.
*I liked the bits of hockey that were on the page. There wasn't much, but what there was worked for me. I especially liked the scenes where Kristen and Kellan were both just at the ice rink playing
But for some reason the connection between Kristen and Kellan just never really worked for me. There was a LOT going on in this book and I think that just kind of overrode the actual story for me. There's a lot of things happening. A lot of drama and surface stuff that kept the book from going deeper.
Although the ex/mafia story line was a touch unbelievable, to me that was the best part of the story...not knowing where and when the ex was going to show up...although I did figure out the twist about 25% before it was revealed in the book. That was just a little too coincidental, so it was easy to see coming.
A lot of the things in this book were just too easy. Kristen has an insane, murderous ex...well, coincidentally, all her very good friends work for the FBI or are in law enforcement and can help her hide. Kristen has to rebuild her career...well, lookie there, her new boyfriend just calls all his friends to hire her and a few weeks later she's getting hired at her dream firm. I don't mind one or two things happening like that, but when it's over half the book, I tend to start rolling my eyes.
So, yeah...a mixed review. There was never a point when I was reading the book that I thought about not finishing it. It was entertaining enough to read, but this probably isn't a series or an author that I'll stick with. I think she's just really not my cup of tea. But that's fine...there are tons of readers who love her.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~
I would just like to start by saying that one of the things that I loved about this book was catching up with Brooklyn - featured in Camden's Redemption. There is always something rather special about finding old friends in a new series, and she was so perfectly placed too!
This is a fast paced book with a lot of FBI/danger issues which stem from a very bad previous boyfriend choice by the female lead, Kristen. She is now hiding in plain sight and hoping that he will be brought down. So when Kellan starts to express some interest in her, she is naturally wary, and certainly doesn't want the attention that would come with dating a famous hockey player. (Now I have to admit that this element didn't quite gel for me in the book, because she does hang around with the players and family and it seems highly unlikely that she would not be photographed at all - especially given the number of books which make a big thing about just how intrusive the paps can be - but I chose to run with it). He certainly is a good guy, even if she finds it hard to believe.
There are some really lovely moments in this book; some where you would like to remind them to be a little more alert to the risks; and plenty of hot and steamy ones too. I wouldn't say there was all that much hockey, but that there was I enjoyed.
I am keen to see where the series goes next, and would bet that it is much more sports related than maybe this one was. I hope Ms Dover is busy creating it for us to enjoy.
I received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review for Netgalley and Cocktails and Books.
This is a sweet, fun story with suspense and intrigue thrown into the mix to make it a satisfying read. I enjoy everything L. P. Dover writes and I love stories about hockey players, so I was excited to read this and I wasn't disappointed.
Kristen is forced to take on a new identity when she runs away from her psycho boyfriend. She is devastated when she leaves her home, job and everything else in her life behind. She is currently working as a bartender and she misses her former job as an interior designer. She is afraid if she goes back into the field she loves, her ex will be able to track her down.
Kristen works at the local bar that Kellon, a professional hockey player and his teammates frequent. Many of the guys in the team have asked Kristen out but she refuses. She isn't interested in any of the sexy hockey players, she is too caught up in all her problems to even notice them. Kellon likes the challenge of trying to get Kristen to go out with him. Once Kristen finally agrees and she gets to know Kellon, she realizes he is not the womanizer she thought he was.
I feel sorry for Kristen she has had some tough breaks and deserves some happiness. She is a nice person but afraid to get involved with Kellon because she has so many problems. I love how protective Kellon is with Kristen. He won't let anything happen to her and always puts her first. He is loyal and an all around good guy. I really enjoyed the storyline and the characters. Kallon and Kristen are good together and have a lot chemistry, they just need to work through all of Kristens problems.
Kellan and Kristen see each other several times per week at the bar Kristen tends bar at. Kellan is a hockey player and goes to the bar with several of his teammates to kick back and relax. Kellan has noticed Kristen for a while but she blows off any type of advance from anyone, especially his teammates. Kristen has been burned in the past and is definitely looking to stay low and try to keep her life a secret. She is on the run from an abusive ex and he has shown he will stop at nothing to get her to be his.
Kellan finally wears Kristen down to date him and it goes much better than she thought it would. She knows she has a lot of baggage and weighs how much she can tell him about her past. With no family to be able to help her, she is left to struggle through with the help of a few good friends. Kellan knows she is leery of him, but doesn't realize the extent of it until she begins to let him in.
There were definitely some surprises in this book. It keep me reading to see what was going to happen and how it was all going to play out. I did like how Kellan was persistent in showing Kristen he was going to be there for her. Her friends did pull out all of the stops to help her when it was needed. I was at a loss at times though when they didn't have answers that they should have. The plot flowed well and the story line kept moving forward. Overall a good read and I was honored to receive an ARC from NetGalley for an honest review.
