A Christmas Day at the Office

Rate this book
One Christmas party. Two merging companies. Free-flowing champagne. What could possibly go wrong?

With her new billionaire boss in town, Sophie’s determined to swap the No-Jobs she meets on Tinder for her very own Steve Jobs. But will looking like a million dollars be enough to kick-start a Fifty Shades adventure?

A ring in his pocket and dressed to kill, Calum’s planning to get down on one knee. Though if Mia doesn’t say ‘yes’, he’s not sure he’ll ever get back up.

Julie’s got a surprise for Mark—though it’s something she’s not even sure she wants. Meanwhile, Mark’s got another choice to the love of his life, or the opportunity of a lifetime?

With his job on the line, and the ex who broke his heart back on the scene, Nathan’s day is becoming a nightmare. But he’s about to meet the woman of his dreams.

This year’s office Christmas party should be a night to remember—but for five of Seek Software’s employees, it might be one they’d sooner forget.

Matt was born in Margate, but eventually escaped to Spain to write his first novel (in between working as a newspaper columnist, and playing a lot of tennis). Previously he has been a professional lifeguard, fitness equipment salesman, and an IT head hunter, but he prefers writing for a living, so hopes people will keep buying his books.

Matt is the author of four contemporary romantic comedy novels; Best Man, The Ex-Boyfriend's Handbook (which was shortlisted for both the Romantic Novel Of The Year award, as well as the Melissa Nathan Award for Comedy Romance), From Here To Paternity, and Ex-Girlfriends United. He's also written about life, love, and relationships for various publications including The Times, Guardian, Cosmopolitan, Company, Elle, Glamour, and The Sun.

Several of Matt's novels have been translated for various European markets (he's big in the Balkans, apparently), as well as as far afield as Malaysia and Indonesia. He's a regular on the literary festival scene, and rates the recent lecturing stint he did on the Creative Writing degree course at London Metropolitan University as one of the most rewarding things he's ever done - and not only because of the number of ideas he was able to appropriate from his students for his books.

A Christmas Day at the Office, is the follow up novel to, ‘A Day at the Office’ by Matt Dunn, which was released a few years ago. Now I haven’t read the first book so I was joining the characters as a new spectator, but this didn’t take anything away from my enjoyment as I picked up on their back stories quite easily.

The book is told over the period of one day, the day of the office party. It follows the lives of numerous employees of ‘Seek Software Company’, and is told from their various viewpoints. We meet overweight Calum, who is hopelessly in love with his girlfriend, the gorgeous Mia. Newly divorced Julie, and her new partner and colleague Mark, and manager Nathan.

Some of the characters were entertaining and easy to like, others not quite so, though with all good stories you can’t just have good guys throughout. Each of the characters brought something unique, and special to the story, and they fitted well together.

The book did start off quite slowly, and took me a few chapters to really get into it. Once I was hooked, that was it, I flew through the story.

A fun, festive read, that will have you laughing throughout, whether that be with, or at the characters. It is a book that you can curl up with on these drab dark nights, and one that will really get you in the mood for Christmas.

On a side note for the author. Thank you for making me one of your characters (I have a crafty husband), even if you did make one of your characters ogle over my name sake.

A Christmas Day at the Office was an enjoyable read following the same set of characters as A Day at the Office ten months later on the day of their office Christmas party.

For the employees of Seek Software, the Christmas party being thrown by their new boss is a source of unease. No one knows if their jobs are safe or what the their new boss has planned for the merger. For Sophia, she’s hoping to use the night to snag her new billionaire boss. Calum is planning to propose to Mia Rose and he’s not sure what he’ll do if she says no. Nathan, unsure if his job is safe, doesn’t know how to react when the ex who broke his heart shows back up. Julie is left reeling by some unexpected news and has no idea how to break the news to Mark. Mark is offered an amazing opportunity but may be forced to make a choice between it and Julie.

This book is written from the points of view of five employees at Seek Software and takes place entirely in one day. We rotate through the five fairly quickly with a lot of overlapping scenes occurring, i.e. one of the main five will pop up in the background of another character’s section. The story followed a logical path through the day’s events with very little backtracking despite the number of points of view which was something I appreciated. Each character has a very distinct voice, so I had no trouble telling everyone apart and could easily follow along.

I ended up having some of the same issues with this book as I did the first in the series. I didn’t like a few of the main characters and as we don’t see many characters outside of the main five, that made it a bit of a struggle when I was following a character I disliked. Also as I’m not from London, there is quite a bit of slang used that I didn’t understand which would pull me out of the story. This book ends a bit more open-ended than I typically like and I found myself wishing a few of the threads had been tied off better when the story ended.

A Christmas Day at the Office was a quick, easy read that just isn’t my type of humor which lessened my enjoyment a bit. I would recommend this book to those who like slice of life type stories.

I absolutely adored this book. It was funny without resorting to farce or slapstick or crudeness, it was also kind and caring and had a cast of the most lovely, believable characters I have read about in a long time. I started reading this around 12.30 am when I was unable to sleep, thinking it would be boring or 'not my sort of book' and I would put it down after a couple of chapters and try to get back to sleep.

No such luck. ;)

I ended up reading to the 50% mark and had to force myself to close my Kindle and try to get back to sleep (which I did). But its one of those books where I was desperate to get to the end and find out what happened to everyone!

I finished reading this morning and put it down with a sigh of contentment.

Not one unpleasant character in the story. No snideness, or bullying, or 'practical jokes' that do nothing but hurt the other person. No selfish women, no rude men.
I loved Nathan. I cared deeply about Callum. I wanted Mark to be happy. I ached for Julie and Sophie and, although we didnt really get to see much of Mia, I knew she was someone who i would love to have as a friend.

A LOVELY story.

Five stars and a very big THANK YOU to the author for such a wonderful 'Christmas' story.

( Don't let the cover put you off - this is a cracker of a story.)

I have no idea how Matt Dunn does it, but he has once again written about a day in an office environment that is full of action, humour, ups and downs, small surprises and romance, all the while making it feel like their office is a fabulous place to work, full of caring colleagues.

It had been a while since I read A Day at the Office, around the time it was released, so although I remember enjoying it, I was still wondering just how this new book would work, or if not remembering the details would be a problem. I'm very happy to say that A Christmas Day at the Office could easily work as a standalone, but if you are like me and are just having slight memory issues, I found the writing style and characters were familiar again within the first chapter or two.

The story as you may expect focuses around a group of characters who all work for the same company, in different roles. Each chapter features segments on each character and progresses all of their stories the whole time.

The book really is only a day in duration but what a lot can happen in a day, especially when you are looking at multiple people's lives. Sophie is fed up with being dumped, and is hoping that the Christmas party may bring her a new man. Julie has just had some life changing news, while boyfriend Mark is anxious about the party, and his meeting with their new boss. Calum is worried but hoping to propose to his girlfriend, but I loved how anxious he was about doing it correctly. And Nathan who seems to be a friend to all, starts receiving some flirty emails, making him really look forward to the Christmas party that evening.

The day itself was fairly eventful and I loved the relatively fast pace of the book, as we jump between characters, and their circumstances, with the whole book culminating with of course the Christmas Party. Let's just say the party is not quite like any office Christmas party you may have been too, and far more entertaining from a neutral spectator's point of view.

The whole book just felt like classic Matt Dunn writing, with his normal sense of humour clearly present, there are plenty of laughs to be had, and once again he shows great insight into both sexes. I couldn't help but laugh at the descriptions of what was on offer at the beauty parlour, as well as Sophie's reactions to what she has done.

I love just how real all the characters are, you can really relate to what they are going through, they could be your friends or neighbours, or your own colleagues, and that is what makes this book so special, it turns regular people into the most fascinating and interesting stories.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time spent reading A Christmas Day at the Office, and something tells me this may not be the last we see of this office, although that may just be wishful thinking.

Thank you so much to Netgalley and Lake Union for this review copy. This was my honest opinion.

I was not embarked by the story of the characters.

The synopsis was cool and I was looking for an easy romance to put my nose into as it's freezing here.
Tons of people that the author tells you about. Hard to bond and to be moved when you don't have time to like them or even build a relationship. Usually I don't mind but in case of a romance, I prefer to feel something. Here, I've received no emotions.
The words are well written and the plot has potential. But it's a bit cold in the emotions part.

Sorry it hasn't been for my liking.

It was an ok book.. but I feel like the premise was much more interesting than the actual book itself.. had lots of potential: secret relationship, secret pregnancy, planned proposal, gold digging, online flirtation, etc.. how will it all play out at the office christmas party??.... well.. underwhelmingly apparently. Had some cute and funny moments but unfortunately I don't know how you can take a plotline like that and somehow make it boring.

A Day at the Office could have been left as a stand alone but it was nice to have another book to follow on; albeit nine months later.

Like the first story, it is set over the course of one day and evening. It did drag slightly with some characters stories and I felt that Nathan and Sophie's stories weren't really needed. To be honest, I'd probably have just liked two books based solely on Mark and Julie.

The humour wasn't as good as the first and, to be honest, I cringed a bit during this story. Dunn seemed to rely on really cheesy dad jokes that just weren't funny. Also, they mention sexual predators at least three times in this book - really? Seemed a tad desperate for laughs by repeating the same "grooming" joke again and again.

Also, Sophie turned into a hugely shallow individual. She was quite the typical woman in the first story; desperate to find the one, get married etc etc... but in this? Shallow. "I'll just sleep with the billionaire boss and never have to worry about anything again. I'll prostitute myself out to him, I have no dignity".

Tony? Don't get me started on him. Vile and, why would you want him as a boss? He's chauvinistic and I'm pretty sure HR would have some files on his sexual harassment escapades.

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review. This was a really fun read. There is alot of anticipation for this Christmas Office Party that is being thrown by the billionaire who just bought the company. The characters are all worried about their jobs, or possible lack of one when the merger goes through and there are quite a few inter-office couples who are looking to possibly take the next step, then there are the single workers who are hoping this Christmas party will be a "lucky" party for them. Alot is going on here and it is quite a hilarious read with a great cast of characters. I highly recommend!

Making me smile

What a stressful, fantastic story! A company is being bought, will jobs be lost or saved? Then new owner throws a company Christmas party. Relationships form in the most unexpected ways! Both heart-warming and laugh-Out-loud hilarity!

2.5 star read

I loved the first book in this duology; but, this book had problematic elements to it that I honestly don't know if they were in the first book and I missed them, or if they started in this book. I think the former is more likely, but I'm not sure.

On a positive note:
-I love the wordplay the author does throughout the novel. My favorite was "As for Mia? Well M.I.A. just about summed her up."
- I still loved the characters. So much so that I found myself sometimes anxious about where their story lines were heading.

On to the problems I had with this book:
The author, a presumably straight male, kept putting two of the female characters--Sophie & Julie-- what I can only describe as his perceived role for women (housewives who have no desire to work--which is perfectly fine for some women but not ALL). To illustrate this, I have to get spoilery, so here goes...

Thank you NetGalley for my copy of a Christmas Day in the office.

I absolutely love Matt Dunns series of books and I urge you to read this series if you haven't already. If you have then do not miss this book. It's fabulous.

This book was full of humour from the start. I was laughing so hard in the first chapter (something I've been missing from a book in a long time). It is packed full as always with humour, rumours, action, ups and downs and romance. For an office worker these books never fail to hit the mark.

I read the other books in this series a while ago so I was worried that I had forgotten key points and it would make this book hard to read. But thankfully I was wrong. Not only did I remember the key points in the first couple of chapters but this book could easily be read as a stand alone novel so there was no problems there.

As you may expect this book focuses on a few people who work in the same office but they are split between different departments. Each chapter give you an insight in what is happening to these people and at the end brings the story together brilliantly. But don't worry the story is really easy to read so you won't get lost or confused about the different characters.

This book is centred around just one day but my what a lot can happen in just one day to lots of different people. Sophie (my favourite character btw as she is hilarious) is tied of being dumped and is hoping the Christmas party will bring her the man of her dreams. Julia has just had some life changing news while her boyfriend mark is anxious about meeting his new boss at the Christmas party. Calum is anxious about proposing to his long term girlfriend at the Christmas party. While Nathan who is friends with everyone starts receiving flirty emails and so can't wait for the party to meet the mystery person.

The final piece in the puzzle of this book is of course the Christmas party. A Christmas party unlike any other you will ever have been too. Our office parties are never like this. The party was so eventful and entertaining I loved it.

Matt Dunn is an amazing author managing to be able to put him selves in the shoes of both men and women and get their points of view and feelings across perfectly. Amazingly funny as always and thoroughly enjoyable. For me what makes this book so special is how relatable to characters are and how you can imaging being colleges and friends of these people.

I'm hoping for another book in this series as I love it so much. Please don't let this be the last one.

Again massive thanks to mark Dunn for writing such a great book and NetGalley for letting me read this for an honest review. If you like your books filled with humour and drama this is for you.

Continuing on my Christmas reading binge which is rolling unto January. I thought this would be an easy fun read. Which it was. It's interesting that it all takes place in one day so you jump from one characters point of view in each chapter and there is lots of humor, romance and ups and downs in all the relationships. Anyway there is a lot of action packed in one day culminating in the final denouement.
There are five main characters and some of them are very lovable but irksome sometimes; they don't seem to know what they really want and are often undecided about what they want out of life. However, some of the supporting cast of characters are questionable. Don't really get enough information about Mia Rose, her father and her family; need more info regarding Calum's mom; that character was just left hanging and then the new boss Tony is really a jerk.
I've read that this is the second story about what happens in a day at the office and while this was fun it certainly wasn't a masterpiece. I'd say a 3.5 and very entertaining.

"A Christmas Day at the Office" follows several characters on the day of their office Christmas party. It read pretty well but I found it tough to follow so many characters at the start (eventually you do catch up but for the first third of the book, I kept needing to flip back and see who was who). I didn't read the previous book which this followed and if I had, it may have made it easier to follow at the get-go. Overall, it was alright- some fun stories and adventures, all taking place within a day- but not my favorite; a solid read, perhaps better for people who have read his other, related book. Please note that I received an ecopy of this book through a goodreads giveaway. All opinions are my own.

Another dramatic comedy, another easy read

Another great read from Matt Dunn. This one revolves around the Seek team gearing up to meet their new CEO, while dealing with their own personal drama, of course.
The book is filled with endless drama and there's something happening at the turn of every page. There isn't a full moment in the story. The only trouble with Matt Dunn's writing is his love for extra long sentences. It is easy to loose the premise after one sentence runs for three to four lines.
Apart from that the book is a fun read and ideal for someone who's looking for some light reading.

I enjoyed reading this very very much.I wanted to read this book. I read quit a lot of books by Matt Dunn. I liked Sadie and Callum very much all over again. I also liked Julie and Mark very much. I can't wait to hear my about the baby in the next book. I enjoyed listening about the baby very much in the audio book. I don't want write about the baby like the baby is coming in 8 months time. I liked the idea of a Christmas party being in national history museum were I beening a great palce for a party. I liked the idea of two computers Tec meeting together and sharing a building in the near future.

I was a First Read Winner of this book and what a fun read. I had no idea this was the second book in the series, since I never felt I was missing something, and it reminded me a little bit of Christmas Parties I have been too. I liked the characters and the storyline was pealed back layer by layer to make me wonder what could possibly happen next and it was hard to put the book down. This would make for a cute Christmas present for anybody working in an office, or really anybody who loves a good story. Very entertaining.

This is a sequel to Day at the Office, a book I enjoyed so I figured I would read this one as well.

The thing I like about this book and it's predecessor, is that they are good pallete cleansing light rom coms in literary form.

A smallish company has a group of employees that do a good job, but that's not what we are interested in as readers of their actions. No, we like to see the way they interact, the lamentations about failed relationships, the insecurities, and of course the triumphs (if they can achieve them).

These are lighter reads, but that's half the fun of reading them.

I do enjoy Matt Dunn novels. This has something for everyone - a shy bloke dating an outgoing lady, a divorcee starting a new relationship, a lad still heart broken from being dumped mid proposal and a woman wanting her ever after - and all the linked problems. Do they all get their happy ending? But the book and find out.

Funny, sweet but a bit long

The story was entertaining as we follow several employees and their preparations for the office Christmas party. We get some of their background stories and how they all get a hea. It was entertaining and quite funny at times. However, it was a bit too long or me and a little boring at times. Worth it on ku with free audio.

It's like someone turned Love, Actually into a book. It was lovely to see how all the stories intersected and arced over the course of the day. I can't say I was super invested in any of the characters; quite frankly, I can't say I liked many of them either. It's a sweet story though, and I loved the concept.

I did not finish this book. I read A Day at the Office, and it was okay - a couple of the characters got me through it. But when I started reading this and it looked like Sophie was going to be the main character I just couldn't - I'm sorry but she's an idiot.

A light weight read - in every sense. I was irritated by the portrayal of stereotypical women/girls for whom, it seemed, life fulfilment could only come through ‘getting a man’. There was some humour scattered throughout but not enough to off set the lazy ‘plot’.

A Christmas Day at the Office was well written and an easy read, but for not me. Too many characters and not enough going on. This did capture the essence of corporate life and the goings on at an office Christmas party.
