Espinoza Boys #2

Catching Jaime

Rate this book
When Jaime Harris is outed at a party, his quiet life starts to fall apart. His best friend avoids him like the plague, and his younger sister blackmails him in exchange for keeping the truth from their mother. The only bright spot, strangely enough, is Tony Espinoza, who relentlessly pursues his friendship. Why Tony cares at all is a mystery, and as their friendship evolves into something more, it seems too good to be true. Tony comes to his rescue time and again, but can Jaime trust his heart to the cutest, sweetest straight boy he's ever met?

Tony Espinoza is angry and confused. His brother has broken his trust and he's torn about the direction he should take with his future. In the midst of it all is Jaime Harris. Fixating on Jaime's problems makes a great diversion, but the more he gets to know Jaime, the more he realizes the guy is more than just a distraction. Jaime's slowly becoming everything to him, and Tony just might not be as straight as either of them assumed. Now, if only he could get Jaime to believe it.

Catching Jaime is a gay new adult romance. While it is a sequel, it can be read as a standalone.

It contains some explicit content and could contain triggers for those sensitive to sexual assault.

I overall liked and enjoyed this, but there were a few things that bothered me. One, the MCs are from what I thought was a relatively small town, plus Tony is Jaime's best friend and next door neighbor's cousin, so how have they never met before? Also these two, particularly Tony, whose only 17, seem much more mature than their ages. Especially compared to Tony's 25 yr old brother who accidentally-on purpose "outs" Jaime in the beginning of the book.

I do give it props for having a younger pansexual character.

3.5 ✨rounded up cause I liked it so much.

This is the second book in the Espinoza Boys series but it stands-alone. I have not read book 1 and I did not feel like I missed anything while reading Catching Jaime.

Jaime Harris knows that he is gay but he’s still in the closet figuring it will be better to come out when he starts college in the fall. Those plans are foiled when he is accidentally outed during a party. His “friends” don’t take the news well and he hears their homophobic slurs as he runs from the party.

Tony Espinoza doesn’t really know Jaime but he sees the look of sheer horror on his face when he is outed. Tony goes after him to offer support because nobody deserves to be outed that way.

Jaime and Tony’s friendship develops slowly. Jaime can’t understand why Tony would want to spend time with him; after all Tony’s straight. Tony doesn’t quite understand what’s happening either he just knows that he enjoys spending time with Jaime and wants to see where their friendship takes them.

This was such a wonderful coming-of-age type story. Tony is still in high school but comes across as much older. He has decisions to make about leaving school to pursue a job he really wants or finishing his senior year. Jaime is looking forward to college and no longer hiding who he really is. The family dynamics play an important part in the story and it was fun to read how the main characters interacted with their siblings.

This is the first book I’ve read by Ms. Jamison and I didn’t want to put it down once I started. The writing was compelling and her character and scene descriptions made me feel like I was part of the story. I could feel Jaime’s anguish and confusion. I loved how protective Tony was of Jaime. The book touched on all of my emotions – my favorite kind of story. I laughed and I cried right along with the characters.

I received an ARC from the author in exchange for my review and I look forward to reading more of her work.

I received this book free for an honest review.

I normally don't like coming of age stories as often the MCs seem too young and the stories are so often easily sorted.
This book is about a college age guy and a high school age guy. Tony who is in his last year of high school seems to be so mature you could forget how young he is. Jamie is about to go to college and was going to wait until he got there to admit to people he was gay. But plans went went when he was outed at a party.
This book is about the developing relationship between Jamie and Tony.
It started as friendship and then progressed. This book had a bit of everything you were rooting for the couple to sort out all their problems. Jamie had a lot of anxiety to go through. Tony was the strength throughout this book but still had to deal with feelings and a lot of secondary relationships. I just loved the line I'm Jamie sexual. I liked the fact that traditional labels weren't needed by the end of the book.
The supporting characters are well developed and contribute to the depth and entertainment of this book.
I think this book is well written and has depth. It is actually the second book in a series. I haven't read the first and didn't feel like I was missing out or didn't understand anything in this book. The back story was written into this book really well.
I really enjoyed this book and will be on the look out for more books by this author.

A strong addition to the series…
I loved the journey the characters in this heartwarming tale take towards acceptance. There is no magical fix, this circle of friends and family get there the hard way, but it’s ultimately worth the struggle. The relationship between Jaime and Tony builds slowly, with Jaime resisting Tony’s efforts to reach out to him at every turn. My heart ached for Jaime, with fresh wounds piling on top of old ones, his hesitation to make himself vulnerable again was completely understandable. Tony won me over right away, he seemed so mature beyond his years that when youthful flashes do appear I had to consciously remind myself that he was still in high school.
I was also completely charmed by how tight-knit the Espinoza family is, despite the ferocity of their issues, there is no question that the core bond between them is strong. Everyone could use a little more Mama in their lives. The matriarch of this family, who still blushes from their affection, keeps a firm reign on everyone lucky enough to fall under her protective wing. This is a great choice if you’re looking for characters who are right on the precipice of adulthood, while it’s second in a series, the author feeds readers enough information that you can dive right in.
Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I loved Catching Jaime. I just adored Jaime and Tony. They are so cute and sweet. Just enough angst to keep it going. There was some funny parts and growth by both boys. There were many interesting secondary characters as well. I definitely hope to read more in this series. I would recommend this book. It was a great young adult story.

I just discovered this author and I am so impressed by her work. loved the first book, possibly loved this one even more.

my only real issue is that I am having a hard time believing the characters are supposed to be 17 and 18. they seem much too mature for their age. and I find it a little disturbing that I am crushing on a 17 year old, but Tony is just so

Good.

This was an enjoyable enough read. While it is the second in a series, you catch up quick enough even if you haven't read book 1.
