C H Clepitt has a Master’s Degree in English Literature from the University of the West of England. As her Bachelor’s Degree was in Drama, and her Master’s Dissertation focused on little known 18th Century playwright Susannah Centlivre, Clepitt’s novels are extremely dialogue driven, and it has often been observed that they would translate well to the screen.

Since graduating in 2007, she gained experience in community and music journalism, before establishing satirical news website, Newsnibbles in 2010. In 2011 she published her book, A Reason to Stay, which follows the adventures of disillusioned retail manager, Stephen, as he is thrust into village life and the world of AmDram. Clepitt’s feminist fantasy, The Book of Abisan not only crosses worlds, but confuses genres, and has been described as a crime drama with magic. She has often said that she doesn’t like the way that choosing a genre forces you to put your book into a specific little box, and instead she prefers to distort the readers’ expectations and keep them guessing. Her 2016 work, I Wore Heels to the Apocalypse does just that, as just like the characters, the readers won’t know what’s going on in this laugh out loud satirical scifi.

Confession time. I actually laughed so hard I wet myself. Kerry is everywoman for the twenty-first century, and I defy you not to fall a little bit in love with her. Buy. Read. You need this little book in your life

Firstly, and most importantly, I loved the diversity of the characters in this book. They come from all different walks of life, including different sexual orientations, which beefs the story up a bit. We follow 4 survivors as they make it through what remains of humanity after a bomb is dropped, leaving desolation in its wake. They face some challenges in their fight for survival, and stick together throughout, unless one of them is kidnapped, of course. Poor old Tyrone. Kerry is the character referred to in the title and her story is told in the first person POV...and I think the way in which the story has been tackled is very well done.

The writing itself contains a certain level of wit that will have you in stitches. Some of the conversations the characters have with each other are really well handled.

This is a well written, comical look at how to survive an apocalypse and I highly recommend it.

This is my first time in reading a novella and I really enjoyed it. I'll tell you a little bit about the plot without giving too much away. The main character is Kerry, and in some ways the character is someone who all of us can relate to. I could relate to Kerry in that it's very rare that I would wear heels, and it would be just my darn luck that the apocalypse would strike. That's what happens, being caught in awkward situations and trying to make the best of things.
The book has satirical humour throughout which made it an enjoyable read and engaging. What I really liked about it was the development of the characters in such a short story. For example, I started off not liking Tyrone but he quickly became one of my favourite characters and that's when I realised why. In life, there are those that we think we don't like, but as you get to know them and get past all the bravado, you see the real person behind that bravado.
Another favourite character of mine was the badger, he had me in stitches and part of me was secretly praying that nothing bad would happen to this badger.
The final aspect I'd like to cover is the relationship aspect. For me, the dynamics were cleverly written. Not all of us have those locker room moments (I know I never) so it can be confusing when you start to develop feelings for the same sex. The author placed little hints of a possible relationship and developed this throughout the apocalypse, it wasn't suddenly sprung on to the reader, well it wasn't sprung on to me as I knew it was bound to happen.
I saw someone say on social media that this book is unrealistic...that's why it's fiction. It's a short story that you can curl up on the sofa and lose yourself in something that's funny, quirky with a nice twist at the end. If you're having a crappy day or week, then highly recommend this book as a pick me up.

Loved it!

'I Wore Heels To The Apocalypse' is a quirky and satirical twist on the post-apocalyptic genre. This is a most entertaining story, laced with Clepitt's trademark humour, twisted storylines and highly memorable characters that are interesting, diverse, and well-developed.

What can I say about this book? I found it a bit weird and sometimes felt that the pages didn't flow very well, there was a few times that I turned over a page and started to read and had to check that I hadn't missed out a page as I thought I had missed some text. As I read the book I felt that Kerry had been entered into some reality show that all her friends were part of, but she was unaware of to see how she would cope in certain situations and meet people along the way who would befriend her so she could use them to help her succeed. But I was not 100% correct but you will have to read the book to find out what really happens. Also a talking badger, I think everyone needs a talking badger in their life.

This short book is weird in all the best ways. It’s laugh-out-loud hilarious, poking fun at all kinds of human foibles.

The story starts with Kerry, the likable everywoman narrator, getting her high heel stuck in a storm grate. Rescued by the classic Handsome Stranger, this sets a series of odd adventures in motion. After escaping from an apocalyptic explosion with only their lives, Kerry and her assembled “team” must navigate the world left to them. It doesn’t go exactly according to plan, which seems to be how Kerry’s life is in general.

Armed with flashy track suits, incontinence pads, and a talking badger (yes, really), Kerry learns a lot more about herself and her friends than she does about surviving the possible zombie attacks. This is a world where things are upside down, including some abused literary tropes.

I love how so many things are satirized and turned on their ears. One of my favorites is the way both gay and straight identities are humorously played as “confused,” while bisexual identity is stable and not confusing at all. Villains are heroes, heroes are flawed, and no one is safe from the on-point wit in the writing.

There is no rest for the weary here; you stay on your toes while reading or you miss all the fun. Every time it seems like they might figure it out and save the day, there’s a new obstacle or plot twist. It’s a wild ride, so hang on tight.

For non-stop laughs, surprisingly deep thoughts, and an endearing badger, this gets 5 stars.

Given the amount of work by CH Clepitt I've read already, I probably shouldn't have been surprised by the splendidly named I Wore Heels To The Apocalypse. And yet here I am, surprised and delighted in equal measure.

I Wore Heels ain't nothing but a good time. It's fun, it's a frolic, it's the end of the world. Kerry is a website designer inclined towards baggy clothes and comfy shoes when an unexpected apocalypse leaves her in her least favourite shoe choice and with an absence of transferrable skills. Not much use for html in the wilderness since she left her one-bedroom flat.

Instead, she finds herself caught up in less of a battle for survival, more a forage for comfort - all while her travelling companions deal with their own issues of sexual fluidity. The end of the world can apparently do great things for clearing out those social pressures preventing you from admitting your attraction to the same sex. They won't laugh at you down the pub any more, after all.

This is a quirky, perky ride, frequently making you giggle and chortle in ways that make people eye you suspiciously on the tube train. Don't worry about that, you never know when an apocalypse might come along to let you chortle in peace.

I Wore Heels is the best I've read yet by CH Clepitt - and I was already a fan.

The title caught my attention and then I heard about a talking badger - well, colour me intrigued!

What a day to wear high heels instead of trainers!? Poor Kerry even has to have assistance to even get to her client meeting. And then BAM! Apocalypse!!

She fortunately has a couple of survivors nearby who help her out, and they embark on a humorous romp which made me chuckle several times as I read.
Some of the characters seem to be a bit sexually confused, but hey, if it's the end of the world, why limit one's options?

The truth behind this bizarre incident? Well, I can honestly say I didn't see that one coming.
Some bits had me wondering if I was hallucinating. I mean, don't do a feasibility study on it or anything, but it's certainly entertaining. If one must face doom, why not keep a sense of humour, eh?

Sarcasm, with, action, morons - it has it all. LOL
All in all, a fun, humorous quick read.

Totally and thoroughly hilarious! I scared the dog several times laughing at various points throughout the book.

Who hasn't felt all at-sea and incompetent to other people... even if those "competents," well, they really aren't much. Kerry is everywoman, hoping there's no gum in her hair, or dirt on her bum, or dear doG, please, don't have me in heels when the Apocalypse comes!

I love how Kerry grew throughout the story, and finally came into her own.

Read this. Enjoy! Tell. Your. Friends!

Funny but needs work.

This story was laugh-out-loud funny but sadly the run-on sentences and punctuation errors made it tiring to read and a little hard to follow. Some work with a good editor could make this a real gem.

I found this novella to be a quick, easy read, taking just a couple of hours from start to finish. It follows the protagonist, Kerry, as she finds herself thrown into a mysterious situation following an explosion. As the title suggests, she is ill-equipped for this turn of events, being dressed for a business meeting.

I found the story contained some good ideas, but overall the plot was quite confused and unbelievable. I'm generally good at suspending my disbelief but from the very beginning it didn't feel very apocalypse-like - the characters just started referring to the apocalypse without very much evidence that it's what they were experiencing. A good portion of the book focussed on romantic liaisons involving just about every character changing their sexual orientation for (what felt like) no apparent reason. A talking badger provided some random comedy but disappeared without a trace towards the end.

Overall this felt like a good idea for a story, and I feel with some strong editing it could be a good book, but I could not recommend it at present.

An absolutely fantastic read with brilliant characters. So funny. I loved Kerry. She was my favourite character. Couldn't put it down. Highly recommended. 5*. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book from tbc on fb.

This story made me laugh out loud quite a few times. The main character is nowhere near as hopeless as she thinks - her humility is one of her many strengths. It's a fun story, and the characters are all endearing in their own bizarre way. The punctuation drove me nuts (personal preference re comma use, not an issue with the author's writing), but it didn't stop me reading.

I'll definitely read the sequel. Everything is Better With a Cape: The Second Part to I Wore Heels to the Apocalypse Everything is Better With a Cape: The Second Part to I Wore Heels to the Apocalypse

I wasn't sure if this would be my kind of book but I'm glad I started reading it as once I started I couldn't put it down. It was billed as a comedy and definitely had some comedic moments in it. The main character was very believable but the fact she just so happens to bump into a couple of spies and a talking badger went a bit far. The story was well written and the twists were really good. Would definitely read a sequel if just to find out what happened to the badger who vanished near the end of the story. I thought the ending felt slightly rushed as it was building up nicely and then kind of just ended but apart from that it was a very good read.

I picked up this book as it was part of a challenge I am doing. It was suggested by the author as well.

I'm not sure what I think of it really as it was funny in parts and some times it was like where is this going. Was a quick read (would of read it quicker had life not got in the way lol).

What would you wear if the end of the world all of a sudden happened? Well I Wore Heels to the Apocalpyse is 1 woman's story to what she thought happened.

Fun story from beginning to end.

What happens when our heroine is caught in heels and the apocalypse is beginning? With help of spies, a 'moron', and a badger of course, she muddles her way through. Full of great characters and occurrences, this story brings chuckles and laughs at every turn.

In short, a fun though imperfect read. It made me laugh, and sometimes the punctuation choices made me want to dust off my teacher hat again but those were widely author choice, so I didn't get the hat out. Goodness knows my choices aren't always the best either.

That said, it's a witty reading romp.

P.S. I'll be replacing this with a full review from my website during September.

Kerry is meeting a potential client for coffee when the apocalypse starts. Her client, the attractive guy she just met and the barista are, as far as they know, the last people alive and Kerry is just not dressed for the end of the world.

The idea was good and the story okay, but the formatting (Amazon Kindle) forgot to indent or put spacing between paragraphs and since it was dialogue driven, it wasn't always easy to see where one person stopped talking and another started up. I can get past bad formatting, but the story has to be stellar and this one was a bit lacking.
