I was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, I still live there as well as in Dublin, Ireland. I've been a soldier, freelance journalist, tended bar, sold designer cakes, owned a painting and decorating company along with a number of other schemes and scams. If that doesn't offend you I also play bagpipes with the Brian Boru Irish Pipe Band. All my books stand alone, read them in whatever order you wish. They are filled with the sort of oddballs we are all curious about, but wisely, prefer to keep at a distance. None of my characters will be saving the world from terrorism, international banking conspiracies or coups to take over the government. Rather, they inhabit a world just below the surface of polite society, characters with one foot on either side of the law. The circumstances they find themselves in are usually due to bad decisions, but bad decisions lead to interesting stories. They serve not so much as an example but as a warning to us all. Thanks for taking the time, happy reading.

First time I've cried at the end of a Dev Haskell story. He really is a nice guy when it counts.

The Dance (A Dev Haskell novella)
by Mike Faricy

Faricy once again visits Dev's tender side in this novella, revisiting the family of his army buddy who died in combat. This time, the girls are grown up, with Sophie being a senior in high school. On the job, Dev is hired by an obnoxious woman who wants to see her daughter-in-law in jail for attempted murder of her stepson. Something doesn't smell right to Dev, and he takes the job to discover what that smell leads him too. On the personal front, Sophie needs a date to the Father-Daughter dance. She has never gone to one, as her father died before she was born. She's a senior now and this is her last chance.

Quick and easy read for a lovely summer afternoon.

This novella was a bit of a departure from the usual fun loving womanizer that we usually see in Dev. Here we see his tender side. He has even looking out for the family of a service buddy who was KIA. He has always helped out with home repairs and the like, but he sees that teenage daughter Sophie is hurting because once again she is going to be left out of her school's father and daughter dance. Without being asked, Dev steps up and offers to escort her to the dance. Even buys her a dress and arranges for a limo. And for once, Dev gets it right. The rest of the story involves a case where Dev is hired by a particularly obnoxious client to prove that her step-son's wife is trying to kill him. Great story overall and would be particularly good for a Veteran's Day or Memorial Day read.

I chose to read this novella after receiving a free e-copy from the author. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

Dev Haskell is a P.I. who is currently down on his luck. He’s a womanizer but he behaves himself in The Dance. In fact, he does something so sweet that it brought tears to my eyes.

Dev also gets a case that his client (a woman he can’t stand) wants solved in three days. He does solve it but not quite with the results his client was hoping for. I love this guy!

This novella is short but still has a good story. There are a few unanswered questions, though, that I would have liked answered.

This one made me cry. Heidi tries to get Dev to advertise his skills. He gets a call and goes to meet with Ivanna Wegmuller for some investigation work. He doesn’t like her but needs the money. Dev goes over to help out a widow of a guy her served in Iraq she has a daughter who is now a senior in high school and she never knew her father. There’s a father daughter dance coming up and she’s never been to one.

WHAT AN AWESOME BOOK THAT TOUCHED MY HEART!! My brother was a Marine, and he died in 2017. I do not know how I held it together when I accepted the flag as Taps was played! I loved Delvin as I thought he was a loser as he didn't know what career he wanted, but it turned that a PI agreed with him, and I loved what he did for Sophie.

Dev Haskill has a heart. Clever conclusion! A very entertaining novella showing Dev Haskill's soft core hidden beneath his tough guy PI shell. He fulfills his crooked clients needs but the rest of the story is what got my attention. A tale well told.

Having read a lot of the Dev Haskell books, this short novella is significantly different from the others. It shows a very tender and soft side of the womanizing PI. As he starts on a case there emerges a link to a deceased friend's family that leads Dev into a very different role with his friend's seventeen-year-old daughter. I ended the book in happy tears.

An exceedingly good story. Have tissues ready, for more than one reason. I consider it a tribute to our fallen military. Good job.
