I'm Cisco Suarez, and a week ago I was dead.
Cursed into serving a clandestine shadow group, I have a lot of blood on my hands. Good thing I also have a juvenile problem with authority. I'm not taking orders anymore, and the first thing on my bucket list is bringing them down.
If I'm good at anything, it's looking in dark places. But I've got shadows of my own. Horrific deeds coming back to haunt me, and not the metaphorical kind of haunting, either. I'm talking ghosts, mages, and that thing with the glowing red eyes.
Just goes to show you, it really is true what they say. What goes around comes around. I only hope to give more than I get.

I'm Cisco Suarez: necromancer, shadow charmer, black magic outlaw. Sounds kinda cool, doesn't it? It was, right until I woke up half dead in a dumpster.
Did I say half dead? Because I meant 100% dead. Full on. I don't do things halfway.
This was the hook that drew me to the Black Magic Outlaw series and it is as apt for the second book as it was for the first book as Shadow Play sees Cisco continue to hunt the people who killed and then enslaved him!
I actually felt like this was a good second instalment. The story had a few good twists and turns and surprises revelations along the way and ticked along at a good pace due to the steady action and humor. We got a few new villains and supernatural creatures and they were all decent enough. The Spaniard in particular proved an interesting addition to the cast.
The best thing the Black Magic Outlaw series has going for it is the fact that the story is told in the first person and Cisco Suarez is a compelling and amusing narrator. Not that the guy is perfect. He can be a selfish ass at times but he does tell an amusing tale and is still likeable enough, most of the time, that it is easy to root for him against his enemies.
The other big flaw in Shadow Play, and the series in general, is the undercurrent of misogyny that runs through the series. The guys are macho men who kick ass and solve most of their arguments with violence (even when they are friends!) and the women mostly just exist to shake their asses and look good or so they can be saved from danger. There was even a time in this one when one of the women got sent away so the "men" could talk about big boy stuff! Some of the end developments promise a better role from some of the female characters in the next instalment but I doubt this series will ever lose any of its casual misogyny.
Even with its flaws this was a fast paced and fun UF action romp and I did quite enjoy it. This second book might even have been an improvement on the first when it came to plot and pacing.
The magic is also fun and a bit fresh feeling (at least for me) as it is focused on shadow magic and necromancy.
Rating: 3.5 stars.
Audio Note: I think Neil Hellegers gave an excellent performance of this story. He gets the humor and his voice seems a great fit for Cisco.

Excellent! Excellent! Excellent!
This is how you do Urban Fantasy. This is how you write when you have a plot and don't need all those pesky page fillers. This is how an author entertains his audience. This is my addiction.

Note: As Book 2 in this series, it works best if you’ve read Book 1. I wouldn’t recommend reading this as a stand alone.
Cisco Suarez, a dead necromancer, has his hands full with this one. He’s cursed into serving a group he doesn’t like and which he wants to bring down. Also, he’s dealing with some serious ghosts from his past horrific deeds. Toss in whatever that thing is with glowing red eyes, and Cisco could really use a vacation. No such luck for him!
With Book 1, Dead Man, I had one quibble and that was that the ladies were these throw away characters that were mostly comforters or sex symbols. Well, Domino Finn has definitely corrected that with this book. The ladies play larger roles and Cisco’s machismo has to deal with it.
I really enjoyed the quest for the Horn of Subjugation and what that could mean for Cisco long term. Also, those red eyes that follow him turns out to be a scary and interesting treat for us readers. Not sure Cisco is so stoked about it though. Ha! I love the mix of cultures that are brought into play in this series and this book doesn’t disappoint in this. With info about the Horn of Subjugation comes info about the Taino culture from Cuba and how that’s tied to Cisco.
In Book 1, Cisco destroyed the villain he believed responsible for killing him and turning him into a murdering zombie. Well, we learn that there’s a little more to that in this book and Cisco is dead set on tracking down whoever was controlling that villain. They are just as responsible, if not more so, for all the deaths Cisco was forced to do as a zombie.
Now this is an urban fantasy that features a necromancer, so of course we have to play with dead things. I like that the cat from Book 1 could be used as a scout of sorts with Cisco being able to peer through its eyes. Now Cisco needs the memories of the dead and that involves little graveyard worms. Poor Cisco! I really felt for him when he digs into the deaths of his family. He has to defeat whoever masterminded this tragedy in order to put their spirits to rest.
He also has to try to reconnect with his best good buddy Evan Cross, who heads up a special police squad that investigates and takes down organized crime. Things are strained between the two, as we learned in Book 1, partially because Evan married Cisco’s old girlfriend after Cisco disappeared for 10 years. Awkward. Plenty of intense feelings in those scenes.
All together, it was a great follow up to Book 1 and I look forward to more Cisco adventures.

The Narration: Neil Hellegers makes the perfect Cisco Suarez. He does such a great job with the variety of accents throughout this book. Also, there were plenty of intense scenes with both bullets and emotions flying around hitting things. Hellegers was great at voicing these scenes.

Well. I have bad news. I read Book 2 in the Black Magic Outlaw series, SHADOW PLAY, by Domino Finn in one night. Why is this bad news? Let me tell you. I have no idea how long I will now have to wait for Book 3. A week? A month? A year?
It was only yesterday that I finished reading Book 1, DEAD MAN. I am not sure what else I can say that I didn't already say in that review. It seems like just a few days have transpired between books 1 and 2. Cisco Suarez (the necromancer, shadow charmer, and classically trained in voodoo), is still looking for answers.
Cisco is determined to solve his murder, and the reason behind why his family was also killed. The case seems to revolve around the Horn of Subjugation -- whatever that is/does. Looking for answers isn't easy though. Cisco's violent past (when he spent ten years as a zombie under someone else's control -- a time when everyone believed he was dead) is interfering. Literally. Ghosts from the Murk want their revenge. Cisco is their target.
I just l0ve the noir style writing. Gritty. Raw. Finn spices his narrative with humor, and just floods it with tension. Cisco is one of those characters you can't help but like, can't help but root for! The complex plot is laid out nicely because of Finn's storytelling talent.
I don't know how else to make this clear: If you are not reading books by Domino Finn, you are missing out.

Cisco Suarez, necromancer and shadow charmer, was at the room where he died 10 years ago, the “first” time … yep, that’s how this book works. It startles you, gets your attention, then you shrug and say, “Yes, that sounds about right,” and you go on reading. Absolutely fantastic series!
Although Cisco had eventually disposed of the vampire who originally caused his death and zombie murder spree, there was a mastermind who controlled the vampire. That was the one Cisco wanted to track down and destroy. The rest of the book describes his mapcap, zany adventure with tons of creepy characters to deal with. But Cisco is always able to land on his feet somehow.
Although it’s dark, there is so much humor mixed in that the reader is compelled to keep reading. Cisco is a likeable character, and his adventures are non-stop excitement, twists and turns, and lots of suspense. Give it a try and you’ll get hooked like the rest of us! Great story and well executed! I voluntarily reviewed this book and my comments reflect my honest opinion.

Cisco Suarez, l’animista negromante che abbiamo conosciuto in Dead Man, ora ha le idee più chiare. Ora sa chi ha contro e perché, ma non per questo la sua situazione è migliorata.
Infatti, oltre dall’organizzazione contro cui lotta, con un rigurgito di onestà a rafforzare il desiderio di vendetta, Cisco è continuamente infastidito da una serie d’insolite presenze ostili che si manifestano nei modi più stravaganti, dalla vasca idromassaggio ai cumuli d’immondizia.
In più, un evento narrato nel primo volume della serie, al quale il protagonista sembra non dare il giusto peso, rivela un nuovo problema che finalmente ci comincia a mostrare il lato umano di Cisco.
Come in Dead Man gli eventi si susseguono senza respiro, mescolando l’investigazione principale ad altre disavventure dipendenti solo dal passato di Cisco, sempre con gli stessi toni paradossali e ironici che ormai fanno parte del modo di raccontare del protagonista, ma stavolta, come accennavo, con qualcosa in più.
Cisco Suarez comincia a porsi problemi morali, a ricordare il significato di amore e amicizia, a ritrovare un lato umano che era probabilmente ancora addormentato nel romanzo precedente. Mentre ci spiega altri aspetti del suo mondo, si mescolano sempre più spesso considerazioni di autocritica su se stesso, oltre che considerazioni a livello generale sulla negromanzia.
Questo lato umano, questa riscoperta dei suoi sentimenti, non ultima la gelosia, rende il protagonista più vero e la lettura, a mio parere, più interessante.
Oltre a osservarlo lottare come nel primo libro, cominciamo a soffrire al suo fianco, mentre si rende conto di quello che ha perso, mentre amici e nemici si svelano, a volte con sorprese amare e la sua vita passata non può più tornare.
Fuorilegge, ma con una morale, lotta contro un male molto terreno, che fa uso della magia come strumento, ma che, di fatto, è un male che tutti conosciamo molto bene: l’avidità.
Ancora adrenalinica al massimo, rimane una lettura per chi ama l’azione e di sicuro non adatta a chi cerca sentimento, oltre l’avventura, perché Cisco Suarez non ha tempo per l’amore. O forse pensa di non meritarlo più. Ha un’anima, ma è fondamentalmente solo con la sua magia ma non dimentica mai la sua ironia.

I was able to power through the first book, hoping the second book becomes better. Which, it slightly does, but not by much. However, the end of the story shows the protagonist has no spine, thus the low rating.
Cisco Suarez, a dead necromancer, tries to unravel the conspiracy of the cause of his death. While, also dealing with ghosts from his past, that ties in with his death. The Horn of Subjugation also becomes a more integral part of the story.
I do love the mix of cultures that are intertwined in the world of the series. Unfortunately, it seems the world comes to Cisco, instead of expanding and Cisco exploring the world. The series does have plenty of action, which probably takes from the world building and character development.
Yet, what made me drop the series is the ending of the book. Cisco finally finds the people responsible for his horrible past. Remembering that to Cisco, only about a few days have past since he saw his family, and ex-girlfriend. Cisco's sister's best friend has a stronger reaction than Cisco himself, regarding the truth of Cisco's deceased family.

Ci sono libri complicati da recensire, storie con mille risvolti e altrettanti colpi di scena. Romanzi che fanno riflettere, altri pensare, altri ancora richiedono una certa concentrazione e rilettura per essere approfonditi.
Con la serie di Domino Finn l’elemento preponderante è il divertimento. Non perché ci troviamo di fronte ad un libro umoristico ma perché è spassoso dall’inizio alla fine, ricco di avventura ed azione, ha come filo conduttore il racconto di di Cisco Suarez, il protagonista di questa scoppiettante serie, da cui si rischia seriamente la dipendenza (vi basti sapere che ho divorato il libro in un giorno!).
Cisco, come abbiamo scoperto nel primo volume, è un praticante della magia nera. Su, non fate quella faccia, non parliamo necessariamente di qualcosa di negativo. Certo, gli incantesimi sono più forti se di mezzo c’è in sangue ma il fine non è necessariamente cattivo. Oltre a questo è un incantatore di ombre, riesce – in pratica – ad usarle a suo piacere come luogo ideale dove nascondere qualcosa o come “porta” per sfuggire ai nemici.
La mia forma ombrosa mi protegge dai pericoli fisici. Non sono proprio immateriale, ma sono capace di scivolare sotto la maggior parte delle cose. Mi trasformo in oscurità. Divento malleabile.
I nemici. Lo avevamo lasciato in Dead Man che era riuscito a rintracciare uno di coloro che gli aveva giocato questo brutto scherzo (ucciderlo e farlo diventare uno zombie killer per 10 anni) ma ancora non aveva trovato il bandolo della matassa, chi aveva commissionato il malfatto e perché....

Quanto mi è mancato Cisco! Adoro questo ragazzo, tanto. Soprattutto perché ha la qualità che più apprezzo in un personaggio: l'ironia. E' narrato in prima persona e Cisco si rivolge direttamente al lettore (scelta che di solito non amo ma che in questo caso mi è piaciuta). Lui è sarcasmo allo stato pure, anche quando racconta cose raccapriccianti mi fa mantenere il sorriso.
E' un urban fantasy e siamo a Miami. Cisco è un negromante, lui preferisce animista, incantatore di ombre e fuorilegge. Infatti dovrebbe essere morto da dieci anni e non segue proprio la legge, non può. Oltretutto è tormentato da fantasmi e poltergeist di persone che non ricorda di aver ucciso quando era un servo zombie e sta cercando giustizia. Per sé, per quello che gli è capitato, ma soprattutto per la sua famiglia, sterminata per futili motivi, quelli economici.
E' forte anche la componente mystery, c'è qualcosa che sfugge e che lui deve scoprire, ma il fantasy prevale. In alcuni punti l'ho trovato persino difficile, quando spiega nel dettaglio la magia, un po' complicato e da qui il mezzo punto in meno.
La trama è articolata e adrenalinica e tiene col fiato sospeso fino alla fine che, lasciatemelo dire, lascia di stucco. Non ci ero arrivata, lo ammetto, anche se avrei potuto. L'autore ha mostrato di avere una vena sadica a lasciarci così, avrei voluto entrare fisicamente nel libro e fare una strage.

Quanto mi è mancato Cisco! Adoro questo ragazzo, tanto. Soprattutto perché ha la qualità che più apprezzo in un personaggio: l'ironia. E' narrato in prima persona e Cisco si rivolge direttamente al lettore (scelta che di solito non amo ma che in questo caso mi è piaciuta). Lui è sarcasmo allo stato pure, anche quando racconta cose raccapriccianti mi fa mantenere il sorriso.
E' un urban fantasy e siamo a Miami. Cisco è un negromante, lui preferisce animista, incantatore di ombre e fuorilegge. Infatti dovrebbe essere morto da dieci anni e non segue proprio la legge, non può. Oltretutto è tormentato da fantasmi e poltergeist di persone che non ricorda di aver ucciso quando era un servo zombie e sta cercando giustizia. Per sé, per quello che gli è capitato, ma soprattutto per la sua famiglia, sterminata per futili motivi, quelli economici.
E' forte anche la componente mystery, c'è qualcosa che sfugge e che lui deve scoprire, ma il fantasy prevale. In alcuni punti l'ho trovato persino difficile, quando spiega nel dettaglio la magia, un po' complicato e da qui il mezzo punto in meno.
La trama è articolata e adrenalinica e tiene col fiato sospeso fino alla fine che, lasciatemelo dire, lascia di stucco. Non ci ero arrivata, lo ammetto, anche se avrei potuto. L'autore ha mostrato di avere una vena sadica a lasciarci così, avrei voluto entrare fisicamente nel libro e fare una strage.

Even better than the last!
A great follow up from the last book. Many questions are answered as Cisco hunts down clues but more are created with many twists and turns. Like the first book, it's the unique world/setting and the Cisco's strong quirky personality that makes this series stand out, as well as the interesting flip of the use of dark magic. I look forward to the next one!

First book iffy but sold now
I was fairly interested in this series during the first book but this second book really expanded the universe because it shows what happened and how the guy got killed and enslave. What a cold hearted bioch man alive. Only thing I missed was the ghost wrath thing that ate people from the shadows, he never used it at all. Magic, action, romance, drama, humor … this has it all. This guy is a good author, great job man. Hope the rest are similar.

Once Again Cisco Rocks!
Fast paced and full of magic,but will Cisco ever get his revenge? I just love how Cisco keeps coming out from behind the 8 ball. In This book he keeps getting closer to how he was and who killed him. He gets a little closure on what happened to his b.s.joy but that even hurts.... Can't wait for the next book!

Continua senza un attimo di respiro l’avventura di Cisco Suarez mentre, un pezzo alla volta, ricostruisce le dinamiche della sua morte e porta allo scoperto i responsabili. Se il primo libro aveva dalla sua la novità e la particolarità della situazione in cui Cisco si veniva a trovare, nonché il ricongiungimento con persone che non vedeva da dieci anni, qua è la storia a farsi più intrigante, sia come sviluppi che come colpi di scena collegati al passato.
Si fa chiarezza sulle dinamiche della morte di Cisco di dieci anni prima e anche sul modo in cui è riuscito a sopravvivere. Ci sono anche rivelazioni molto interessanti sui responsabili che sono riuscite a colpirmi e cogliermi di sorpresa. Si viene a sapere anche qualcosa di più sul misterioso Corno dell’Asservimento che tutti cercano e sul suo occupante. Ho trovato molto interessante l’interazione di Cisco con lo spagnolo e non vedo l’ora di sapere come evolverà.
Accanto a questo, poi, l’autore ha saputo gestire molto bene anche le complicazioni che sorgono nei rapporti interpersonali di Cisco con le persone del suo passato. Soprattutto verso il finale ci sono delle evoluzioni davvero molto interessanti che lasciano Cisco in una situazione orribile da cui non vedo l’ora di sapere come si tirerà fuori.
Se alla fine del primo libro ero abbastanza incuriosita dal secondo, ora fremo dalla voglia di avere per le mani il terzo perché questo secondo si è rivelato ancora migliore del primo e non vedo l’ora di tornare a leggere di Cisco.

Just as good as the first book
I devoured this book as quickly as I did the first one. I love how well written all the characters are and the connections between them. Definitely looking forward to reading the third book to see what happens next.

How did I miss Cisco?!
I'm not sure how I missed Domino Finn and Cisco. These books are right up there with the Kevin Herne and M D Massey. Cisco is less sarcastic/ humorous and more shoot first soliloquy later. I'm headed for the next book.

It's a fun read
So two books in and overall I'm enjoying it. I have some cliche issues with it, but they are secondary to the fast pace and action. It's not perfect, but it's worth reading.

Nel primo volume “Dead man” facciamo la conoscenza di Francisco “Cisco” Suarez, un ragazzo di Miami affascinato dalla magia nera tanto da renderla qualcosa di più di una passione. È stata la magia nera a metterlo nei guai, anche se lui non ricorda né il motivo né l’esatta sequenza degli eventi: si è solo risvegliato in un cassonetto, più forte, con più poteri e più vecchio di dieci anni. In quel periodo di tempo di cui non ha ricordi è stato morto, zombie e assassino agli ordini di qualcuno che ha deciso di far fuori pezzi grossi della magia nera ma anche persone molto vicine a Cisco.
Ora il maleficio è spezzato e Cisco ha tutta l’intenzione di scoprire chi c’è dietro la sua morte e perché è stato ucciso. La seconda risposta arriva per prima: Cisco era in possesso di un potente manufatto che ha attirato le attenzioni di un’oscura organizzazione.
“Dead Man” ci mostra le prime fasi della ricerca, i dubbi di un ragazzo che si risveglia uomo e che scopre con orrore che la sua famiglia è stata trucidata, che la sua morte è al centro di una guerriglia magica e che il suo migliore amico pare invischiato in qualche modo in tutto questo.
In “Shadow play”, secondo volume della saga, Suarez tenta, uomo dopo uomo, uccisione dopo uccisione, di dipanare la matassa dei misteri che avvolgono il suo passato e i suoi nemici, continuando a regalare al lettore azione, adrenalina, suspense e tanta tanta magia.
Vengono proposte nuove situazioni, sempre intrise di soprannaturale, e nuovi personaggi che calcano ancora più che nel primo libro sull’aspetto mistico-spirituale della magia di Suarez: spiriti, animisti, occultisti, poltergeist, oltre a elementali del fuoco e a streghe-ninja, vivacizzano le pagine di questo romanzo. Gli effetti speciali sono assicurati.
Meno riuscito l’aspetto emotivo della storia, con i rapporti sentimentali e familiari del protagonista che scivolano via un po’ troppo superficialmente, nonostante le ottime premesse per qualcosa di ben più profondo.
Ma “Il fuorilegge della magia nera” è e rimane una saga d’azione, che non può non avvincere con il suo ritmo e uno stile cinematografico: romanzi fortemente “action” che però non esitano a tingersi di giallo e di nero.
E non è ancora finita, perché Cisco è ben lontano dall’aver risolto la matassa ingarbugliata della sua vita.

Cisco è tornato più spumeggiante che mai. Il corno dell’asservimento è il motivo per cui tutto è iniziato e si dimostra ben presto un artefatto potente. Come poterlo sfruttare fino in fondo è però tutto da scoprire e Cisco dovrà prima capire come sopravvivere a questo nuovo mondo.
Il suo migliore amico, Evan, sembra essersi invischiato in guai più grandi di lui, in una cospirazione che potrebbe avere radici molto profonde. La magia nera è tutto quello che può salvare Cisco e dovrà sfruttare a fondo tutti i suoi trucchi e le sue conoscenze, a volte rischiando anche parecchio. Si renderà conto che dovrà espandere i suoi orizzonti, anche perché è inseguito da sinistre presenze e fantasmi che vogliono un tributo di sangue.
Le indagini su cosa sia avvenuto nei suoi anni da schiavo giungono più volte a un punto morto, mostrando una società paranormale molto intricata. Ciò che a prima vista poteva apparire come uno scontro tra gang per il dominio di una parte della città diventa invece una rete di potere, che cerca influenze molto lontane. La magia è una questione di pratica e di sangue, di tradizioni antiche, tramandate di generazione in generazione, che si sono rafforzate con il tempo. Cisco dovrà scoprire il suo ruolo in tutto questo, per riuscire anche a trovare il motivo per cui il suo talento a tratti sembra qualcosa di più.
I personaggi femminili acquistano un nuovo spessore in questo libro. Sono donne coraggiose, che lottano e sono pronte a tutto pur di non vedersi strappare ciò che amano. Milena è quella che mi è piaciuta di più, con la sua vitalità e il desiderio di aiutare Cisco. Riesce a strapparci un sorriso ogni volta che compare sulla scena. Cisco è un grande ammaliatore e anche Milena non è indifferente al suo fascino.
Come per il primo libro, sono rimasta incantata della scrittura e dall’ironia di questa serie, che riesce a catturarti dalla prima all’ultima pagina.

Superb sequel…
This story picks up right after the events of the first book (Dead Man) and Cisco Suarez still can’t seem to catch a break. Be ready to hit the ground running as Cisco does not believe in taking a moment to regroup. The action is non-stop, the hits just keep coming, and twists and turns kept my attention from start to finish. Cisco is the quintessential damaged antihero type of character but he is also very likable and has an impressive command of snarky banter. The narrator, Neil Hellegers, once again provided a great performance in the audiobook version of this story. There are still more loose ends for Cisco to deal with if he is ever going to get the justice he is seeking for the losses he has endured. I am eager to see how things will play out for him in the next book. Great job by both the author and the narrator.

Very blocky at the beginning. Something that should probably be worked on. Domino's one difficulty seems to be Cisco on his own, or searching, or thinking to himself, which is the earliest part of this book. The words don't flow well there, every sentence because wooden within it, causing a break, a pause, in the narrative.
However, as soon as he reaches fight scenes and/or conversation, he's pretty much a master and the book picks up from there. We get beyond explanation/telling, into "showing."
The book itself was a lot of fine despite the initial stall(s) in the first few chapters, and a lot of the ideas are interesting. There are even turns to the mystery section here that catch you completely off the guard; and the ending packs a sudden, stunning punch.
Overall, the series remains worth the read and I'll probably try to dive into book 3 tomorrow.
