He sits down, exasperated, looking away from me, “I don’t know. I keep having these dreams.”
“Yeah, about what?”
“About you. About the baby. About my parents.”
“And…?”
“Allison, I need to know I won’t lose you.”
“Charlie,” I take a deep breath, trying not to go there again, “tell me about the dreams.”
He sits forward, staring blankly at the wall, “The first one was crazy. I was on one of the towers of the Golden Gate Bridge. I just remember being terrified because I was so high up and it was so foggy, I couldn’t see anything to get down. Then, all of the sudden, I was securely on the ground and my parents walked up, holding a baby and I had this feeling like I knew everything was going to be ok.”
I look at him, trying to hide the anxiety I feel about his dream and the entire situation. “Did they say anything?”
“Yes,” he looks down, still not able to look me in the eye as he talks about his dream. “They asked if I wanted to meet my son. They said his name was Lyric.”
I inhale sharply at the sound of the baby’s name but don’t dare say a word.
“Then the other dream was of you and a little boy. You were reading to him, sitting on a porch swing at a house in the country. You called the little boy Lyric as well and he called you Mommy.”
He looks at me and I can tell it’s more to gauge my reaction from the Mommy comment rather than to see if I have something to say in response.
I look down as tears fill my eyes that I can’t fight back.
Charlie reaches his arms around me, “Please don’t cry, Allison. I’m so sorry. What can I do? I need to make this all ok.”
“Charlie, you need to decide what you want.”
