Serving the king as a Ranger has never been boring, but once Erkenbrand takes on the responsibility of scouting for a caravan of settlers heading to the wilderness, he faces challenges like never before.
Separated from the caravan and stripped of all his gear Erkenbrand must struggle for his life before he can see his love Thealea again. Facing the wilderness, the monsters that dwell there, and the creatures he meets, Erkanbrand is alone with only his skills and will to survive. And behind it all is a dark secret that might doom both Thealea and Erkenbrand.
Snowberry's Veil is a departure from the usual world-changing multi-part fantasy epic, taking a more personal look at a smaller adventure. Instead of saving the world from vast evil, this is a more intimate look at one man's struggle to survive and help those around him.
Enter a world of strange creatures, magic, and personal struggle; a fight against the harsh wilderness as well as the evil that man can bring.
Christopher Taylor is the author of three novels -- Snowberry's Veil, Old Habits, and Life Unworthy -- along with many other works for role playing games. He lives in Oregon and is always at work on another novel.
A life long dreamer, Christopher encountered fantasy in The Hobbit at a young age and for him it was like coming home. He learned to play AD&D in 1979 and his gaming experiences as player and GM have shaped his storytelling and world building skills to a razor sharp edge.
Both Old Habits and Snowberry's Veil are set in his game world Jolrhos and reflect his love of both the wilds of Oregon and the gaming worlds he's been a part of.
Christopher checks the back of closets for Narnia and feels odd writing about himself in the third person.
Erkenbrand, a King's Ranger in this fantasy story, is leading a caravan through dangerous forest country when he is attacked and separated from them. While striving to meet up with them again he clashes with a tribe of raccoon people, and must fight to survive and return to his people who have fallen into danger.
In many ways a realistic tale of surviving in the wilds, but there are also dragons and mages casting spells. Interesting world and characters, seems to be first of a series to come.
Erkenbrand, a ranger in the king’s service, has been scripted to serve as guide, scout, and huntsman to a caravan heading to settle new territory. But, he gets separated from them after being chased by a Wolf Clan of beastmen. In the process he gets caught by Snowberry’s Raccoon Clan of beastmen. Will he survive long enough to see his beloved Thealea again or die trying to fend off bandits, magic, and mythical creatures?
Taylor’s novel, Snowberry’s Veil, is the saga of Erkenbrand’s quest for love after a life of living alone in the wild. It is a rather good story, but is bogged down with typos. Often a thought is stared and half of it is finished with another thought, making reading difficult and confusing. Words are misspelt and sometimes missing.
Originally published in 2012 with the second edition in 2013 I was surprised the copy I was sent had so many mistakes. It is worth reading if you can get passed them.
