Rubber Soul by Yumehito Inoue is my first novel by this author and it's a surprisingly well thought out, engaging and stylist novel!
I like all the Western pop music references in the story, and the main plot about a seriously disfigured loner (who happens to be obsessively in love with Western pop music) stalking and 'protecting' a young up-and-coming model, to a point he was willing to do murder for her (two men are killed in total), is intensive and it reminds me a great deal of The Phantom of the Opera, and I'm saying it in a good way.
I like how the many details in the story were written, I also like how the loner MC was written, his voice and his thoughts about the girl whom he was obsessively in love with (he loves her, but he knew better than to show himself in front of her), music, the outlook of his life and his loneliness, all of these sound realistic and understandable to me. Although his stalking and spying on the girl is rather unforgivable, still when reading the story I found myself pitying the MC despite him being an active and cunning stalker (who spent most of his time stalking the girl model), I pity him for being so heavily prosecuted for his disfigurement for his whole life (even before he actually did anything bad or illegal) and barely anyone cares for him (expects his aged caretaker).
I also like how there are various POVs in the story, we get different sides of the whole series of events from different characters: the MC, his caretaker, the girl model, her agent, her friends and co-workers, people from the music magazine, etc. Plus despite of the different POVs, the story hasn't once lost its focus.
At first I think this book is only set to be a 'realistically written but predicable' stalker story, but in the end, the author dealt out one mother freaking hell of big fat plot twist which boosts my rating from 3 stars to 4 stars: .
I will keep my eyes on more of Mr. Inoue's novels.
