In a universe of falsehood, all truth is blasphemy. The stunning conclusion to the Dragon Apocalypse! As the daughter of a living woman and a ghost, Cinder has the power to travel between the realms of the living and the dead. When god-like dragons unite against mankind, Cinder undertakes a nightmarish quest, traveling through Hell to confront sinister forces seeking the total destruction of all life.
I've been an avid reader since I first picked up a book. Luckily, I was within biking distance of three different libraries growing up. I was a skinny kid. If only I had maintained that link between biking and reading, I might be a skinny adult.
I'm also a writer. I wrote my first book as a kid, an adventure about pirates and ghosts. When I was a teenager, I used to write superhero adventures. Then I went to college and was steered toward writing "literature." It took me several years to shake that off, and today I write the sort of books I devoured by the shelf when I was sixteen, fast-paced fantasy, SF, and superhero adventures, which I use to explore deeper questions about life. My goal is to always be thought-provoking and always be fun.
I've had short stories in about a dozen anthologies and magazines. My novels to date are:
Nobody Gets the Girl
The Dragon Age trilogy Bitterwood Dragonforge Dragonseed
Burn Baby Burn
The Dragon Apocalypse Greatshadow (January 2012) -- A team of superpowered adventurers are recruited by the Church of the Book to extinguish the primal dragon of fire, Greatshadow.
Hush (July 2012) -- An effort to complete a quest for a fallen friend, the warrior woman Infidel stumbles onto a plot to kill Glorious, the primal dragon of the sun, and plunge the world into permanent cold and darkness, the elemental domain of the dragon Hush.
Witchbreaker (January 2013) -- A young witch named Sorrow has lost control of her magic after tapping into the spirit of Rott, the primal dragon of decay. Her desperate quest to save what remains of her humanity leads to an uneasy alliance with an amnesiatic warrior who might be the legendary champion of the church known as the Witchbreaker. But can there combined powers prevail when they trigger the wrath of Tempest, the primal dragon of storms?
Book four and conclusion to the Dragon Apocalypse. The world is in terrible danger, and our friends have been trapped in Hell for the past twenty years, frozen in time. Life has gone on and things are changed in the world. Infidel is back in this book, and Stagger too, briefly but satisfyingly. The complex world-building Maxey has created at last has a conclusion here. It is rewarding to see how everything gets tied together in the end, and how many of the events in the previous books were just laying the foundation for this one. A lot of preparation and planning has gone to climax in this last book, and in hindsight, it could not have been any other way.
Like book three, this is again different from books one and two, but this time the story is centered around a new character. There is plenty of mythology already seen in previous books, but there is a lot more of it in this one. Many of the mysteries are explained, and there is a big reveal towards the middle of the story. Many of the events and stories from previous books will not make sense until this reveal, and when this is reached everything will fall into place.
Even though this book is centered on the figure of Cinder, all characters in previous books appear again, as each one contributes to the final outcome. There are heartbreaking moments, but also redeeming and glorious ones. The world will never be the same after this final book.
Jake Urry did again an excellent job narrating the story and voicing the characters. This was a difficult book as all characters from previous books make an appearance here, and keeping things consistent is not an easy feat. Urry also transmitted their emotions, bringing them to life in such a way that they will stay with the listener for a long time.
This has been one of the best fantasy series I have read in a long time. I absolutely recommend it to anyone into fantasy and complex stories with great world-building. You will be changed after listening to the complete tale.
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
And the fourth & final episode of The Dragon Apocalypse finishes strongly. I Loved the first two, struggled with the third, but this final book, pulled everything together and on many occasions had me going. Oh I see! A really great story, so well written. This final story brings all our favourite characters together. Sorrow, The Romers, Infidel is back as is Stagger and we also see the demise of some much loved characters. Sorrow & Slate is a particular tear jerker. The way that James Maxey brings all the story lines together is top quality story writing. Cinder proves to be her mothers daughter and the Black Swan, Cinder story line is a real twist! An excellent series.
One thing that does annoy me about this book and many others that I get on Kindle though is the number of mistakes. It's plain to see that these books need better editors. I occasionally find stray words in real books. But the number to be found throughout Kindle versions is annoying as it drags me out of the story with a start. It's usually the wrong word in the wrong place.
This was an awesome series wrap-up. It concluded all the characters we've adventured with along with how things will be in the world. Totally worth listening/reading!!
disclaimer: I was given a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review
If you've been reading along in the Dragon Apocalypse, then you're coming in on a cliffhanger. The heroes have been trapped in Hell for twenty years and the Dragon Apocalypse is well under way.
The first chapter starts with the end of the world and everything gets crazier from there.
Maxey continues his story with unexpected thrills, original powers and battles. The book churns through a lot of plot but he still manages to weave it together with strong character development, his trademark wit and philosophical discussions without ever getting weighed down.
Whatever you think is coming, I guarantee you will not guess some of the twists, turns, betrayals and how everything is tie together. There are callbacks to each of the three prior books but enough is explained that you don't have to have recently re-read them to make sense of what's going on - although I wouldn't blame you if you did just for the fun of the adventure.
It's hard to discuss much of the plot or even the main character without major spoilers so let me leave you with this - everything has been building to this. Mysteries are revealed, a take-your-breath away climax and not everyone is making it out of this book alive. If you've enjoyed the first 3 books then 4 is a worthy conclusion.
Wow!! What a way for this story to end! Could not believe the amount of time paradoxes and schist that went on to keep all the story lines straight. Did not see that one coming as to who the someone integral to the story was and how Zetetic was being Zetetic
Really great read, a rip roaring thrill ride where you have no idea who does what and when and that affects the final outcome
