Trey returns from another visit to the Moore estate with nothing but more anger and less room in his head to stow it. Old coping mechanisms no longer work. Not with a newborn in the mix. And Liv, who's had enough.
Liv has found what's missing: a memento of her past she's worked hard to forget. It unearths memories of a different man—a stable partner, a loving father. As it draws her in, Trey's new anger drives her away.
Desperate to find Liv, Trey digs into his arsenal of magic for a dark power he's never used. He shouldn't use—he has to use. What he doesn't expect is who that power lures: a visitor, with answers for Liv, complications for Trey, and a claim on their daughter almost as threatening as the Moores'. And what that power creates: a weapon, perfectly crafted to target all who share his blood. A vulnerability placed upon their daughter. And the perfect way for the Moores to destroy them all.

I was afraid to start this book. I'd binge read the first three books of the series and was hoping it wouldn't be hard for me to get back into the flow of the author's writing. Unfortunately, I'm sad say that my fears were well founded. I think I would have been better off not reading any of the series until it was finished and then just reading all of it in one fell swoop. Not only did I find the writing not as smooth as the first three books (or maybe I remember it being smoother than it actually was), but I had to think hard to remember events that had happened in the previous books. The author used the first person narratives to tell more than show and the verdict is still out on how I feel about wishy washiness due to love spells. Overall, I found this book a little disappointing. Trey was still as awful as ever, Liv was still as crazy as ever for loving him, and the magic in this one was a little too easy and hard to understand at the time. I'm not sure that made sense, but there it is.
However, there were definitely bits that I did like. After the aforementioned wishy washiness, the MCs matured a lot in this book. And the fact that this book covers over fourteen years helped matters along in an organic way. I like that there was absolutely no ow/om drama, nor was there continual mention of how gorgeous the other person was. The sex scenes were also few and far between, written in a tasteful manner, and showed a real connection between the MCs. Even though this book wasn't all I'd hoped for, I'm still looking forward to seeing how this series will end.
Another masterpiece from the Alignment series! Gah! It's going to be so hard waiting for the final book to come out! I loved this book because the mood lightened considerably since the last book. It was great to see the true family dynamic between Trey, Liv and all of their family. I'm trying to be vague so I don't give too much away but Trey really grew up in my eyes. It was wonderful seeing him as a father. I really thought I couldn't love him and Liv more but this book somehow did just that. A solid book in this series! I'm a little sad though that the next book will be the last. I teared up a bit finishing this book knowing there is only one book left. I don't know if I'm ready for this series to end.
If you're new to the series, be sure to read books #1, #2, and #3 first. These books are very sequential and are meant to be read in order. Happy reading!
