Rate this book
The first character readers meet is Iyana Smith, a young woman from the housing projects who has a son with Scott Ritchie, a well educated sales executive. The story follows Iyana and Scott as they try to learn how to be parents together despite being separated romantically. Along the way, a cast of unforgettable characters—like Connie, Iyana's churchgoing, beer-drinking mother; Roger, the sleazy used car salesman with a thing for young girls; and Carolyn, the homemaker with the killer right cross—are introduced, and develop alongside Iyana and Scott.

Lessons had to be learned...

Scott and Iyana meet at the club,
d-r-i-n-k-i-n-g.
First comes flirting,
Then comes sex,
Then comes Scott with years of worry.

All Scott Ritchie ever wanted to do was please his parents. As an only child he was doted on, taught to be respectful and that hard work paid off. Although he was successful in his career, Scott still felt like a failure. He'd had a child out of wedlock with a woman he openly despised. Iyana was always in his face with her hands out and meddling with him and his son's relationship as much as she could. Because of Iyana, Scott was physically sick when having to deal with her trifling tail and had refused to date and written off all black women.

Iyana Smith didn't grow up with love, praise and two parents. As a result, her dreams included getting all she could for as long as she could off whoever she could. It never mattered to her if other people were happy as long as she was happy. Although she knew that Scott loved their son, she still had to show him that she was the boss. If Scott wanted to be apart of Miles life, then he had to be apart of her life as well. Or simply suffer the consequences.

Just when Scott is about to write off another sister, he discovers Sassy Sadie from high school may be just what the doctor prescribed for him. Will Iyana be able to eliminate the competition?

Get Right! The Games People Play by LaMoure is filled with sex, love, pain, heartache, forgiveness and respect. I found myself laughing aloud, and I also loved that not every situation had a quick fix. At times I wanted to scream out at the characters, but I realized that there were lessons to be learned.
