The Complete Horse Mistress Collection

My secret could save my people.
It will also destroy my life.

My name is Carivel. I was born female, but I've been secretly living as a boy in my adoptive village of Draebard, doing a job the elders insist could never be done by a woman. My life is complicated enough already, so the last thing I need is to fall for not one, but two unattainable men—a fierce warrior and a reluctant wolf-shifter with a horrific past.

Now, with the powerful Alyrion Empire poised to invade our lands, I must choose whether to keep my secret or reveal it… not only to the men I love, but also to the powerful female ruler whose army could help protect Draebard during the coming war.

Either way, strife is coming to our island.
Win or lose, things are about to change irrevocably for the three of us.

USA Today bestselling author R. A. Steffan lives in New Mexico, where the sunsets paint the mountains purple, and roadrunners roam the desert endlessly in search of their coyote victims. When she’s not busy writing stories about people loving each other in all sorts of different and interesting ways, she can be found taking care of her small menagerie of critters.

A rebel to the core, she is currently sticking it to the man by illegally harvesting graywater from the kitchen and bathroom sinks to water trees outside. This fearless disregard for societal norms extends to her writing, as well. There, you will find polyamory along with straight, gay, bisexual, and non-gender conforming love of all flavors. You will also find families of choice, profound friendships, adventure, danger, and good triumphing over evil.

That, and sex. Lots of sex. Most of which is not the vanilla variety.

Read this and other reviews on my blog https://lesfic.home.blog/

Last year the first book in this series came by for free on amazon and I “bought” it in a whim. After reading I immediately wanted to read the next and the next and the… You get it, I was hooked. There is fantasy, horses, gender-bending, diplomacy, war and shapeshifting!

Carivel (Cara) leads in this book, she’s/they is a remarkable person. Born as a woman, but living as a man for years already. Äfter half their village is murdered one night, they get the chance to become horse master, hence the name of this series.

The storyline of this series is both very dark and very beautiful. What happens in the diplomatic and war sense is dark, but the love-story woven in there is beautiful.

The love story in this book revolves around three people, Carivel and two men (Senovo and Andoc). You could say this book qualifies as a MMF menage. But that isn’t necessarily correct because of how Carivel identifies not as a woman but a man. Maybe MMM is better, at least for this book. Anyway: the eroric scenes are very sensual, sensitive and hot at the same time. When you’re craving an erotic novel, this book will probably meet your expectations.

I really loved reading this series and would advise considering buying the box set because it is cheaper and you’ll want to read the other books too.

This was such a marvelous read, distinguished by some absolutely lovely characters and a unique relationship. An utterly captivating heroic fantasy story on its own, with some real drama and tension in the plotting, populated by bisexual lovers, eunuchs, and a gender-swapped heroine. Some stories you breeze through to get to the end, and some you linger with, reluctant to say goodbye. This was definitely one of the latter.

2016 Rainbow Awards Honorable Mention: The Complete Horse Mistress Collection
1) This was such a marvelous read, distinguished by some absolutely lovely characters and a unique relationship. 2) This collection is fantastic. It's so detailed and three dimensional it felt like I was part of the story.
3) A four volume compilation of gender bending love and preternatural terror. Good reading.

well this was so different on so many levels i'll try hard not to spoil it for anyone but i cant promise.
i loved everything about these books the world building is complex and has so much depth its easy to slip into this land of magic and struggle with the characters we come to love. As to those characters its impossible not to love them and feel with them throughout this long jerny to there HEA. This love is so very different from what i normaly read the relationship dynamics are very different but it works its love pur and simple and there is nothing more buiteful then seeing how close these strong compasionet characters are. i've seen some review claiming an overload of sexual activitys but i cant agree with that at all its the right amount for this partnership i'm sure others have more or maybe less but every partnership is different. so all in all this was a great read i'd recomend it to anyone who can look past steriotyps to the core of a relationship and it will defnatly go on my read again pile.

I have submitted this review after listening to the audiobooks of this series.

Book1
During an attack on the village that had become home for Carivel, for the past three years, her mentor, amongst many others were killed.
This elevated her into a new position, that of Horse Master, as her disguise of the three years still remained undetected.
Then, being asked to be a part of a mission to seek alliance with another island community, combining forces against their shared enemy, our young girl, realized that others also had their own secrets.
It's an interesting campaign, revealing more than just the strengths and weaknesses of the community's senior representatives.

Book 2

This episode shows the return to their community, facing the consequences of their individual mis-represented situations.

Followed closely by the delegation from their newly allied neighbors.
Therefore, although the chieftain was enamored by the horse master's newly acclaimed sexual status, he made to dominate by a demand of his own.

This plus other situations arise to cause the joint attack on the mainland's invading forces to act, sooner than any anticipated, but just in time, for one situation that had become dire.

The aftermath ànd psychological damage done to the mental health of the horse mistress, meant that her two lovers had to perform an intervention, to get her psychics back into alignment with her feeling of safety and security.

Book 3

In this episode our three intrepid heroes are against a whole range of difficult situations.
However, although each has shown that they felt they were not worthy of the companionship of the other two, it has been proven that the three were bonded tightly together. Giving succor when each individual needed it.
We see a foreshadowing of an events, as well as a loss of one of the community's main characters, which changes lives and power.
There are many developments, but these are best read (or listened to) as the author intended, rather than my muddled synapses.

Book 4

The idea that the Empire would again make an incursion, as soon as possible after winter, the three stepped up their various expertise, to try and somehow defeat this gigantic war machine.
With an ability of thinking out side the norm, allows the creative solutions to outsmart a gigantic war machine, with untrained and in some cases, reluctant recruits.
To know the outcome, you need to read this episode, just as the author intended.

Sorry I tried but using sex in place of a story is sad! This story had potential to be a amazing but the sex ruined it for me, it was too much and it didn't add to the story.

I enjoyed this book series a great deal until the very end. The way the series ending was written really knocked my rating down a few pegs. I'll explain some with no spoilers.

The series is very spicy and very LGBTQ. If that's not your thing, you won't enjoy this. I enjoy both those things, so it was a delight for me. The three main characters (the main relationship is a trio) have a beautiful chemistry and are delightful characters. I love that the series explores disability and trauma here and there. The overall plot is really well-written, too. It's engaging and interesting with a lot of side characters you really love.

Now, the reason this didn't get a higher rating is a few things. The first is that while there is a frank and honest addressing of trauma in some places of the book, in others it seems to kind of be ignored at moments when it shouldn't be. Also, in the final book of the series, the author felt like he was in a hurry to wrap everything up. The characters went on a whirlwind tour of various different things and dealt with all their trauma and happily ever after. Also, the main body of the story was wrapped up in a single chapter from a POV readers had never seen before.

It felt like it needed more room to breathe because the author was trying to wrap everything up and realized they were running out of space or something. It was actually quite a let down. While the ending itself was what we'd have hoped for, the way it happened was a little weak and would've benefitted from another chapter or three.

This collection is a very special gift for my heart, especially because of the wonderful people that are Andoc, Senovo and Favian. They will always be on my shelf of favorite books and characters.
The first two are the Warrior and the Priest of the tribe, and also lovers in their private life. After a while their relationship is completed by the Horse Mistress, Carivel. All three of them are committed to each other completely, ignoring the criticism of the other members of the tribe. Each helps the other two to make peace with their painful past and grow in their love for each other. When one suffers, the other two are there for them. Andoc loves feeding them, Senovo is the wise man and a shape shifter, and Carivel is their glue. The three of them become guardians of young orphans Favian and his little sister, and also a normal presence for the inhabitants of the temple.
When their island is in danger of being invaded by a cruel empire, the three of them call all the tribes to unite and fight for their freedom. The new army is joined by hoards of wolves commanded by Senovo and other shape shifters. The most memorable moment after the battle is the image the enemy soldiers could see on the hill near the sea: Andoc and Carivel embracing the wolf between them who became Senovo.
Of course the adventures continue in The Lion Mistress, because Favian has to follow his mentor, his heart and his visions.

After listening to the first sex scene which was around an hour long and had me uncomfortably squirming and grimacing for much of that hour, I decided the fast forward button was my friend. Not the 15 seconds forward button, but the bigger arrow that goes to the next chapter. These sex scenes are long, and they include everything but traditional sex between the three love interests (a warrior, a eunuch, and a person who sexually identifies as a man but has a woman’s body).

I bought the book because it was on sale, sounded interesting, and, well, horses. The story itself is good, and I kept listening to the book because I was interested in spite of being uncomfortable since I wanted to find out what happened next. But I really ought to pay more attention to the book description and read a few reviews before I plunge into a book by an author I haven’t read before. I’m just glad I didn’t buy the author’s other audio books that were on sale too.

I think it would be wonderful if this author would offer a PG13 version of this book for younger or more sensitive readers. There are some young adults who could use heroes in less traditional romantic relationships that they could relate to.

The narrator of the audiobook does a good job with the book, and I applaud her for making things more palatable with her reading.

So if you like long, alternative sex scenes, this might be the series for you. Otherwise, prepare to fast forward a lot or just read a different book.

Not your typical romance

I want to start by saying how much I appreciate the author being inclusive in their work in regards to gender identity. I am not one who has first hand experience in it but I still love seeing everyone represented to some degree in literary works. With that being said, this romance isn’t a typical MF or even a MMF read. We follow a female character who truly identifies as a man in a born female’s body and will continue to do so through the entire series. If that isn’t something you enjoy to read or can appreciate, then this series may not be for you.

Overall, I really did enjoy the series with the relationship building between the 3 main characters, the daily struggle with sexism and judgment from the public, the world building, and the overall plot with the upcoming invasion of their island. The world was interesting and more archaic than what I typically read but I loved the setting.

I plan on reading more from this author and diving deeper into this world of Eburosi.

This was an interesting story for me to read.. I really enjoyed the writing the storyline and the characters.. I loved watching the relationships and how they grow.. and I also loved watching the individuals grow and try to figure out who they are.. and who they are meant to be.. and then who they need to be together not apart. It was a lot different of a read for me only because I don't know if Ive read a story where the main character isn't who you think they are originally.. but that is ok. it made it more interesting and gave me more to look forward to. this was a rollercoaster of emotions.. and intrigue.. and even though this normally isnt my genre of choice i really enjoyed it and i am glad i got to review it

This is an ebook series of four books, the first one is free on Amazon and I do suggest reading that one before commiting to reading the entire series. Though the series is "free" on Kindle Unlimited. I say this because not everyone is going to enjoy reading about LGBTQIA+ characters and this is an unfortunate situation because this is a very good book about finding yourself and belonging.

Our main character is AFAB transgender, though she never really defines a label for herself other than a boy's soul in a girl's body. She does use she/her pronouns which is also addressed in the book. The situation is also compounded by her lovers, which leads us to a very loving threesome, that is explored socially throughout the series.

The other characters react to their relationship in different expected and unexpected ways that feel realistic given the situation. There is an actual plot through the series, not just a focus on the romance and self-discovery.

I found the whole series really eye-opening and heart-warming, and will be reading more from this author in the new year (I did read this in 2024 and am only reviewing it now in 2025.)

Carivel is a man who was born in a woman's body. Because the society she was born into did not accept her as she is, she ran away. Accepted into another village, Carivel changed her look to be a boy and pretended to be one. Because she was a "male" she was allowed to work with the village horses and was an apprentice. While in the village, she met a temple acolyte and the First Warrior who happened to be lovers.
A raid on the village causes the three to come together and she learns that Senovo the acolyte and Andoc, the First Warrior, learn each others secrets and develop a strong friendship, love relationship and family together.

Definitely one of the most shocking books I have ever read (listened to in my scenario). Storyline is strong, as is character development. The author's writing style is excellent; she paints a story of each scene well and discussed the thoughts of the main character extremely well.

But...there is a lot of sex in the book, and it is often graphic, and arguably uncomfortable. While not opposed to that, or offended, it just seemed out of place in a book where the storyline and the story-telling was so good.

I highly recommend the book (the audio version is excellent; the narrator does an incredible job), but warning: you better buckle up!

A fantastic read

I enjoyed it a lot but there were some things that I missed. Mostly the ending seemed so abrupt. I wish there was more of Senovo being away and the other 2 on their own. I also wish more of the fight was there. Then what about Favion's dream? Does he share it and do they stop it. Does Frella start calling them her parents? Will they ever get to have their own children (like she decides she can try for them)? Just an abruptly quick ending that left me with so many unanswered questions but the story itself was amazing!

I tried really hard to get through this, but the story was not what I was looking for when I first started. I tried to put that aside, but it just never got interesting enough to keep my attention and at this point I just don't care enough to try to finish it

I thought I had more thoughts on the separate books as I finished them, but didn't find them, and there are a few notes in my reading progress, but I am going to blame goodreads for loosing my data like it did for a few others when it transitioned to its new streamlined format, loosing all the robust data it had before

Fantastic series, with shifters, some religious elements, an a great alpha lead with an androgynous h, not comfortable living as a female, but very much in love with 2 Hs. Together they battle to be accepted by those they protect. They are fighting an evil empire with limited resources, and while the shape shifting is familiar ground, the fantasy and world building was intriguing and different. Loved it.

Good enough that I read them all!

A really original premise, strong characters, and best of all strong female characters. In fact, the only thing that would improve it would be if the main three characters had been women, so each reversed (a shape shifting submissive eunuch female? Hmm, a dominant female, and a girl born into the body of a male). I liked the end of the last book as well very much—satisfying.

Horse Mistress series

I have copies of Horse Mistress, Lion Mistress and Dragon Mistress. I just completed Horse Mistress and thoroughly loved it. The stories of Carivel, Serono and Andoc made me laugh, cry and get Angry.
I just started Lion Mistress and can hardly wait to really get into it.
Thanks, R. A. STEFAN.

great read!

I loved the representation and how much care was taken in crafting each character. When I was younger I remember talking to my sister about what would life be like if the US was never colonized? I love how imaginatively this collection responds to that question. I’d like to read the next collection, great job author!

3.5 stars. This is difficult to rate because while I LOVED the queer and disability representation, the story did tend to drag on a bit, and the main relationship got so serious, so fast — often a complaint I have with poly love stories. I wish it had been more of a medium burn at least, or that there was more tension (other than each of the main characters having a turn at pulling away). Also, the pacing was slow at times. I know it was technically 4 small books together, but I still think the overall story could have used some edits.
