Army Ranger Scratch Sullivan is back, hunting the new Apex predator on the planet, the smart zombies as well as those humans who would prey on the innocent. As Scratch is about to find out, to every rule, there are one or two exceptions!
M.D. Massey describes himself as the prototypical INTJ. His eclectic background provides him with a rich tapestry of experiences to draw on when crafting fiction, as evidenced by the believable worlds and relatable characters he creates.
As a former Army combat medic (91B), professional martial arts instructor (Krav Maga, JKD, FMA), and women's self-defense instructor, he possesses a unique understanding of close combat, firearms, and criminal violence that few authors can match. This knowledge provides an element of realism to the Druidverse™ novels, setting them apart from other fantasy series.
Mr. Massey lives in the Texas Hill Country with his family and a huge American bulldog that keeps him company while he writes. When he's not in his office or at the local coffee shop writing, you can find him in his garage pummeling inanimate objects or knife-fighting with his friends.
Compelling Novella The story moves along nicely. Nothing is explained, everything is shown. The hero is revealed to have a scarred face, explaining his nickname, "Scratch". Scratch is an excellent tactician and combatant, as is shown when he faces off against multiple opponents at one time.
Scratch is called to a town outside his normal patrol. Thus we learn he is a vigilante. The world is modern, post apocalyptic, as shown by his modern weapons, and mention of "after the bombs dropped".
There are undead of various kinds. Typically they are evil and dispatched. However in this story, the aberration is for the good, or at least positive. Scratch demonstrates his humanity, and his goodness by how he handles it.
He follows up over the course of a few years in fast forward, so we get to learn the ultimate outcome pretty quickly.
I'm not a big fan of undead books, but post-apocolysm works for me. Fun quick read.
I love M D Massey’s junkyard Druid series and got this when I subscribed to his newsletter. Well now I have another series to read. Well written and it was an interesting twist to this story. Highly recommend
I picked up Them: Aberration thanks to an Instafreebie offer - and I'm jolly glad I did. It's a short story in Massey's Them universe, featuring war vet turned undead hunter Scratch Sullivan, who is hired to come and rid a town of an unwanted presence. Everything is not as it seems though, and while Sullivan sets to his task of tracking down his target, he soon discovers there is far more afoot here than the townsfolk are letting on. This is a nice introduction to Massey's post-apocalypse world. There's almost the feel of a mournful Western to it, it's thoughtful and tackles weighty issues despite its length. You can also pick it up for free - along with Druid Blood, also pictured above, over on Massey's website. For a free story, it certainly made me think, and it's a very welcome enticement to dabble more in the book's universe.
