Surviving high school is hard enough—but when your best friend vanishes without a trace, and the only clues seem to implicate the Martian government? It can turn into a nightmare.
Everything changed when Isaak disappeared. Henry, Tamara and Scylla know GSAF had something to do with it—they just need to prove it. The only problem is, crossing GSAF can get a person killed. Especially if Joseph Condor has anything to say about it...
Lyssa Chiavari is an author of speculative fiction for young adults, including Fourth World, the first book in a sci-fi trilogy set on Mars, and Cheerleaders From Planet X, a tongue-in-cheek send-up of all things sci-fi. Her short fiction has appeared in Wings of Renewal: A Solarpunk Dragon Anthology, Brave New Girls: Tales of Heroines Who Hack, Magic at Midnight: A YA Fairytale Anthology and Perchance to Dream: Classic Tales from the Bard’s World in New Skins. Her first published story, “The Choice,” was named one of Ama-gi Magazine’s Best of 2014. Lyssa lives with her family and way too many animals in the woods of Northwest Oregon.
Trigger warnings: disappearance of a friend, violence, shady government stuff??
I didn't know this existed until I picked up New World and it started with an author's note saying that you needed to read this first to fill in the gaps and I WAS NOT SUPER PLEASED ABOUT THAT TBH. Personally, I think that 0.5 books should offer extra content but shouldn't be required reading in order to understand what's happening in the next book in the series.
But whatever. It was only 99c so it wasn't the end of the world. I read this in about 45 minutes and I actually really enjoyed getting to see what was happening on Mars while Isaak was off gallivanting through time. It fleshed out the characters of Henry and Tamara really nicely, and I'm looking forward to seeing their slightly more mature selves interacting with Isaak in book 2.
DIFFERENT WORLDS is a short, fast-paced novella that manages to both deepen the series its a part of (The Iamos Trilogy) and stand on its own. I came in expecting to enjoy myself thoroughly--Henry was always my favourite in FOURTH WORLD, and this novella is about him (and Tamara). And I was right. The plot is great, the character arcs are deep despite the limited space, Lyssa even made me care about a romance I wanted *nothing* to do with when she first hinted at it (this n-o-p-e happens a lot, it's a thing I do and normally don't go back from). And, surprise cherry on the sunday, one of my fav side character is aromantic, and it is ~stated on page~. I'm so here for this <3
Basically what I'm saying is, if you're a fan of FOURTH WORLD, you need to read this. If you're not... well, go read it first! Then pick this up. But definitely get it!
LOVED this novella! I'm a huge fan of Lyssa's book, FOURTH WORLD, which I read last summer, and this companion novella really hit the spot for me. Let me start by saying that this novella should absolutely only be read after reading FOURTH WORLD, since it relies heavily on the events on the novel (plus, everyone should read FOURTH WORLD anyway because it's awesome).
In FOURTH WORLD, the main character, Isaak, is whisked away from his life in a Martian colony, and we, the readers, follow him on an otherworldly journey. But before that happens, we get a full picture of his life... his home, his friends, his school, his family. So when he vanishes... what happens to them? DIFFERENT WORLDS answers that question by following his two closest friends, Tamara and Henry, as they grapple with his abrupt disappearance... and all the grief, anger, and confusion that accompanies it. There's a tragic sense of dramatic irony as we--knowing full well that Isaak's alive and well--watch the two teens try to figure out how to deal with it... how hard they work to figure out where he went, the danger they put themselves in when they suspect a government conspiracy, the tensions that arise because of that... DIFFERENT WORLDS takes place over the course of a year, and it's a fast-paced tale full of fraught decision-making and high emotions. I loved everything about it... it was so much fun diving back into Lyssa's Mars and experiencing the world. And the feels! Gotta love all the feels! The ending is absolutely perfect and left me with a mighty need for the FOURTH WORLD sequel (not that I didn't already have a mighty need... this just exacerbated it).
Anyway, if you like sci-fi with some amazing world-building and fantastically written characters, I HIGHLY recommend that you scoop up both this novella and FOURTH WORLD... and read 'em back to back :-D
“Oh, yeah, easy as pie. Because the authorities definitely have not been known to shut down peaceful protests in hazardous-to-your-health ways.”
A novella in the Iamos trilogy, set between Book 1 (Fourth World) and Book 2 (New World). On the one hand, I'm not 100% sure that one absolutely has to read this book--the POV characters are Tamara and Henry, and we see things that might not be crucial to the main storyline--or at least, the POV characters of Fourth World and New World don't necessarily know what happened here, so maybe the reader doesn't need to?
On the other hand, Henry is an absolute treasure, so I feel like anyone who enjoyed Fourth World even a little should really read this.
It's not so much about time travel as it is about grief and loss and moving on, with a bit of romance, and I adore reading about all of those things. I loved getting into Henry's head, and it was neat to see Tamara's world and watch her deal with her anxiety, too. I'd love to read a whole series about these two.
Content-wise, there's some cursing (anyone who was paying attention to Henry in Fourth World would have to know that) and I believe two "F" bombs. Great read overall.
I picked it up and didn't put it back down until I finished the entire book. It's fantastic and brought me right back into the setting of Fourth World, which I'd read nearly three years ago now. I just received New World in the mail today and that spurred me to finally pick this up. I love Henry and Tamara, and I love their development in this novella. It really made me understand them more than I did in Fourth World. I'm looking forward to New World!
I read Fourth World (which you should totally read and also read first, because otherwise you'll probably be confused) a while ago, but I held off reading Different Worlds until now because the second book isn't released yet and I didn't want to have one very long wait during the series. Now I'm kind of regretting not reading it earlier, because it's awesome, and also reading it already, because I desperately want to know what happens next.
I love both Tamara and Henry, the two POV-characters, and my heart was breaking for both of them for like three quarters of the book. You mostly know where the plot is going, seeing how it runs parallel to the second half of Fourth World, but how they get there is told fantastically. The character's actions were on point and their feelings came across so, so well. I was afraid in the beginning of a few things happening that I wouldn't have enjoyed, but they didn't happen, and one of the worries/questions I had for New World has already been laid to rest.
One of the characters is aro and it's clearly stated without their story being about it at all, which is great.
Honestly, there is not one bad thing I can or will say about this book, and just like Fourth World it's very high on my list of favourites!
