I loved this one so much, such awesome characters, this one is so very sensual, filled with danger and intrigue as Robert Grant exiled for ten years returns home but will he be put to death or will be saved by a red headed feisty lass who might win his heart?

Robert Grant has returned to Lochrose Castle in the Highlands with hopes of reconciling with his father The Master of Strathburn after being exiled ten years ago, it is time that he made amends for what happened all of those years ago but there is a price on his head and his younger half- brother Simon and his mother will do whatever they need to, to ensure that Robert does not take his place as heir. While staying in the old hunting lodge Robert encounters a beautiful red head, will she upset his plans for the future?

Jessie Munroe has recently come to Lochrose with her father when he is hired as factor to try and put things back in order, but she is forced to flee when her father is away when Simon is determined to make her his plaything but while making her way to the hunting lodge she is injured by a handsome hunter, can she trust him and then when she realises who he is things might just get very dangerous.

Things move very fast as Robert and Jessie learn more about each other but can they trust each other, with a price on Roberts head and his need to reconcile with his father is Jessie’s offer to help one he can trust and as for Jessie she is worried that Simon will catch up with them and then what will happen?

I loved, loved this story so much, it has everything a historical romance reader would want, a gorgeous Scottish hero and feisty Scottish heroine, there is danger and a very sensual romance, this one had me turning the pages and cheering them on, I do highly recommend this one, a must read and I look forward to book two.

My thanks to the author and Booksprout for my digital copy to read and review.

'The Master Of Strathburn' by Amy Rose Bennett is the story of Robert Grant and Jessie Munroe. This is the first book I have read by this author and I am so glad to have the chance to read her book. I will definitely be looking out for more books by Ms. Bennett.
Jessie is having to go on the run because a man named Simon Grant is trying to make her his mistress and thinks she if fair game since her father is away. So Jessie is trying to escape him but get hurt a few times along the way. Jessie wakes up and finds herself with Robert Grant...Simon's older half brother. Robert has been gone from the area for a long time but is now back trying to fix things with his father and for when he was young and 'hot headed'. Robert takes to helping Jessie to get to a safer location in Edinburgh.
This was a very entertaining book and was so glad to have the chance to read it!

This is the first book I have read by Amy Rose Bennett, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I’m glad I decided to read The Master of Strathburn in exchange for an honest review. This is a story of high adventure with a yummy highlander as the hero.

Jessie Munroe finds herself in a difficult situation when her father leaves to collect the rents for the Earl of Lochrose. His son, Simon Grant, decides she is fair game and corners her while she’s out riding. Desperate to escape his devious plan to have her as his mistress, she flees, planning to go to her cousin in Edinburgh.

While trying to make it to the earl’s hunting lodge to wait for the mail coach, she slips and twists her ankle. Then someone takes a shot at her, grazing her arm. When she awakens, she discovers her rescuer is the earl’s estranged son, Robert, who escaped after the Culloden.

As Robert helps her travel to Edinburgh, the attraction between them is too strong to ignore. Can she possibly give her heart to a known Jacobite, who could end up with a noose around his neck?

The Master of Strathburn is a fast-paced story with plenty of action, suspense and intrigue. The plot is well-developed, and Ms. Bennett weaves in the history of the times with a masterful touch.

Jessie is a wonderful heroine. She’s spunky and determined to find a way to thwart Simon’s plans for her. She uses her keen intelligence on more than one occasion to get herself out of trouble. I truly enjoyed her character from the first page to the last.

Robert is an amazing hero. He is a warrior, determined to protect Jessie no matter what he has to do to accomplish it. I could feel his remorse over the pain he caused his father when he was a hot-headed young man. He truly redeems his character.

If you like a great love story with plenty of emotion along with a good deal of suspense, then you will enjoy The Master of Strathburn. I will definitely be looking for other books by Ms. Bennett. Happy reading!

After a decade spent in exile, Robert Grant a Jacobite, has returned home to Lochrose Castle in the Highlands to reconcile with his long-estranged father, the Earl of Strathburn. An updated edition of the book released nearly a decade ago. A very well written page turner, strong characters, a well paced story & sizzling chemistry had the pages flying by. I loved both Robert & Jessie the chemistry between them sizzled but there are misunderstandings plus really horrid villains. Set against a backdrop of a trouble Scotland in the mid eighteenth century this well researched romance ticked all the boxes for me

I think I may have found a new book boyfriend. Robert was a great character. He had his charm, good looks, and better yet, he had a heart. He was the kind hearted hero, the caring book boyfriend that made me wish I was in his line of sight. I loved his story of redemption and especially how his task of clearing his name was made just a bit harder because of Jessie Monroe.

His inner monologue was funny and it really brought out his sweet personality. The fact that he was shy about undressing a female (not in a sexual way) was just really cute and had me smiling at my Kindle a lot.

“He was reacting like a green unskilled youth, not a thirty-year-old man who had undressed his fair share of women.”

It’s like he even wanted the reader to believe that he is a rakehell, but he really does not come off that way.

Jessie’s character was a good fit for him. Although, she had her moments of stupidity, I think it was cute because of her apparent attraction to Robert. Just think, there would be no story if she were able to tell him the truth about her relationship (or lack thereof) with Simon.

Simon’s character was a disgusting example of a man who lets jealousy and obsession eat away at his soul. His despicable attitude made him the perfect villain and threat. His cringe worthy dialogue gave me chills and made me feel for Jessie all the more.

“I have a proposition for you, Miss Monroe. Spend the night with me and do my bidding...or I shall have you arrested by the dragoons and thrown into a cell for aiding and abetting a wanted fugitive.”

Such delusions and threats did not go unpunished, although I would have done a lot worse to him had I been the one to decide.

It’s these characters, plus a few others that made this such a fun read. The writing is well done and flowed well from page to page. I was eagerly swiping pages on my Kindle in order to find out what would happen.

Favorite quote:

“I’m not sure what you were expecting, but I want you to know, you mustn’t feel beholden to me even though we have been hand-fasted. I assure you, I will not try to take advantage of you.” He offered her a half-smile. “Well, at least not until we’re properly wed.”

Sigh.

4.5 stars for this sexy excursion into the Jacobite rebellion

For her newest release, Amy Rose Bennett has returned to Scotland, this time in the years after the failure of the Jacobite rebellion that resoundingly defeated in 1746. I loved Lady Beauchamp's Proposal, and this novel is even better.

The eldest son of the Earl of Strathburn has returned home. But it won't be fatted calf on the spit if his stepmother and younger half-brother gets his way. Robert Grant was spirited away ten years ago, just ahead of arresting soldiers, after he led men in the disaster that was Culloden. And if Simon and the redcoats catch him, the charge of treachery still stands.

Jessie Munroe is in hiding from Simon, too. He is determined to make the lovely girl his mistress, and if she is unwilling, so much the better. In Simon's view, that adds a bit of spice.

When Robert and Jessie both choose to hide in the same place, the sparks we've come to expect from Ms Bennett set fire to the page. Without giving away too much of the plot, I can tell you to expect misunderstandings, a noble warrior protector with a hot body, a determined intelligent heroine, and a couple of truly nasty villains. Simon is the kind of horrid person who pulled the wings of flies when he was a boy.

But his mother is well and truly worthy of the tradition of Lady Macbeth and the wicked stepmother trope. She is not at all concerned about her son's fondness for raping the help, gambling and spending away the estate's income, and drinking himself blind. He is her boy, and should be allowed to have what he wants.

Ms Bennett has given us a thrilling romance with an historical background that feels authentic, a couple of chase scenes with cliff-hanger consequences, some clever plot twists, and plenty of passion.

4.5 stars, not because of the sex scenes, which I skim read looking for interesting dialogue and plot points (because that's just me), but because Jessie took way too long to tell Robert what was really going on. I bought her initial reluctance, but wanted to shake her long before they entered the Strathburn house.

I'm delighted to have had the opportunity to review an advance reader copy.

I started this book a couple years ago and couldn't remember why I didn't finish it. So I started over, and at the same point I previously put the book down, I was ready to do so again. Let me say that I really liked the hero of this book. I felt for his need to reconcile with his father and make amends for the rash actions of his youth. Coupled with his father who obviously longed to see his oldest son again, I was routing for these two to reconnect. If only I could say the same for the hero and heroine!

I found the heroine to be very weak. Part of the issue is the Big Misunderstanding as a plot and conflict device. I haven't seen where this successfully works in a book and it sure doesn't here. I think the heroine tells herself at least 10 times that she is going to tell the hero the truth no matter the consequences, and either chickens out or something conveniently happens to keep her from doing so at that moment, and she doesn't force the issue. Yet she tries to tease the hero as if she is strong and plucky when she is anything but. Not to say that it isn't believable for her to not know if she can trust him, but to not clear up a lie will only ensure that he doesn't trust her in the future.

I read up until they finally made it to the castle and was happy that the lie would probably be resolved soon and the hero and his father would reunite, only to realize that there were 14 chapters and an epilogue left. I honestly thought the book would be wrapped up in another 3 chapters at most.

Obviously this book didn't work for me. But if Big Misunderstandings don't bother you that much, then give this one a try. The hero is worth it.

It’s adventures aplenty for Highland lovers Robert Grant (the prodigal son of the Earl of Strathburn) and Jessie Munro (daughter of the Earl’s new steward) when they both find themselves trying to avoid discovery from the same person - but for different reasons.

Both Rob and Jessie had secrets that they weren’t sure they could trust each other with BUT I was not a fan of the nonsensical lie that Jessie told Rob about her relationship with Simon. It added NOTHING to the story and made me actively hostile toward Jessie. This was just exacerbated by Jessie consistently admiring Rob’s honesty and integrity, his openness to acknowledging his mistakes, his kindness and concern for her.. all while making a million excuses as to why she cannot do the same. It cast her in a poor light that I’m not sure she ever recovered from – for me, at least.

The villains here were disproportionately, and verging on comically, evil… almost to a distracting degree. The action picks up in the last 50 pages which were a whiplash of attack, counter-attack, counter-counter-attack and.. you get the idea!.

“She’s a problem that I wasn’t expecting. And it could be my downfall.”
Very entertaining, meaty, hard to put down story with twists and turns. There’s misunderstandings and mistrusts between the two main characters which is sorted out and then a smoking hot attraction between the two. The characters were well developed. The hero showed courage, honor, protectiveness, intelligence, and passion. He also had inner pain and guilt from his past. The heroine got stronger as the story went on. I loved that there two villains. The setting and period details are spot on as some historical figures, events, details are featured. A well written Scottish Historical Romance.

The Master of Strathburn is the first book I have read by Amy Rose Bennett. I chose to read this book because of the subject matter, former Viscount, Jacobite fugitive meets lovely lass that gives him assistance. The cover of the book is lovely too.

Jessie Munroe and Robert Grants (Lord Lochrose) first meeting left much to be desired, but he showed her compassion and was nothing at all like the man from whom she was running from. Although Jessie is unaware of Roberts true identity when they first meet, she is a smart lass and figures it out soon enough.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this story, but it wasn’t what I got. I enjoyed this book! It had everything you could possibly be looking for in a Scottish, Historical Romance. A strong, loyal, roguish/gentleman Scotsman. (I loved the character of, Robert Grant!)A sweet, loyal Highland lass, with a gentle nature, but not afraid to stand up for the man she loves, or what she believes in. There was a time or two that I would have liked Jessie to have not been afraid, but I got over it. I liked her character.

I feel the author did an excellent job of giving us background information on Jessie and Grants characters, and fleshing them out. This was a story about relationships, trust, and redemption. It was not just about sex, as some historical romances may be these day. Yes, there were some pretty steamy sex scenes, but those happened later in the story, and didn’t take up residence in our H&H’s minds every scene in the book. I adore that the author gave me a story with some meat on it’s bones.

I liked Robert’s father, he was a gentleman, and loved his son very much. There were a few ‘nasty’ characters in this book, and I am glad that the author did not leave any loose ends where they were concerned. While the plot moved along at an exciting and steady pace, it was predictable. But in this case I didn’t mind a bit. This was a truly heartwarming story. The author even adds a few ‘real’ characters from history in this story. It is all believable. I just can’t believe that I haven’t read anything else from the author, and will have to fix that very soon.

I recommend this book to anyone that loves Scottish, Historical Romance, Scotland in general. Wonderful Read! *I received an eCopy of this book from NetGalley on behalf of the publisher, in exchange for my honest review.

Robert Grant should have listened to his father. But he was young and naive. Ten years on from the failed Jacobite revolution, Robert, who has spent many years in exile, has returned home, in the hope of being granted a pardon for his part in the war.

Jessie Munroe does not know her place in society anymore; her family have fallen on hard times and now she is a servant. Just a little while ago, she had prospects, but now that the money has gone, her would-be suitors have disappeared. Her father is now in the employment of the Earl of Lochrose. The Earl is a kind man; it is a shame that the same cannot be said for his youngest son, Simon.

Jessie has caught Simon's eyes and he will have her whether she wills it or not. Desperate to escape his lurid advances, Jessie decides to run away to her family in Edinburgh, but alas she does not get very far when she is mistaken for a deer by the recently returned, Robert Grant.

The Master of Strathburn is a riveting page turning and the hours flew by as I read it. I liked Robert, he is very heroic and gallant ~ He carries a burden of terrible guilt about the loss of life at the Battle of Culloden and he comes across as a man of deep morals. He was also incredibly romantic, and several times I caught myself sighing!!

Jessie was a very courageous young lady, and I felt real terror for her whenever Simon was in her presence. She falls for Robert very quickly when she meets him and she was very forward ~ sometimes I felt, a little too forward, for the time the novel was set in. Nevertheless, her relationship with Robert was very believable.

The only thing that struck me as slightly odd in this book was the Earl of Strathburn. He had his suspicions about what his son, Simon, was up to with regards to Jessie, yet he did nothing to stop it. However, as soon as he learnt that Jessie had spent a couple of nights under the protection of Robert, he demanded that they hand-fast??! He came across as incredibly feeble ~ he had no control of his wife or his youngest son and he only seemed to develop a backbone once Robert was back. He did not come across as the usual Scottish Lord that is so familiar with this time frame. However, this is only a very small complaint in what was a great read.

Bennet is a skilled story-teller and I look forward to reading more from this author.

First impression ===> I wish I could be there, riding a horse and using candles to light my nights. So romantic and peaceful.

A sweet historical love story with so much tension and interesting events.

It's the story of Robert the viscount who decided to be a jacobite and rebel against the king.

Robert had to leave Lachrose Castle and flee to Jamaica so as not to be executed. Ten years later, after hearing that things were not going well in the castle he decided to come back home and seek forgiveness from his father and the King for his youth foolishness.

When he arrived, Viscount Lachrose had many issues to deal with before he could live peacefully. He was prepared to deal with his venomous stepmother and disgusting half-brother but he was never prepared for the feeling he would feel for the redhead he saw in the loch.

Because of her uncle's gambling, Jessie and her father lost their fortune and had to work for Lord Starthburn. But soon Jessie ad to leave the castle because of Lord Starathburn ill mannered son Simon who wanted to take her as his mistress.

Meeting the gorgeous Robert wasn't on her agenda especially when he was the one who caused so much troubles in her life and heart.

Historical romance is not really my cup of tea but this one was a so sweet and interesting story that took me back to candles, carriages and horses.

A past with horrific betrayals takes readers on a fast paced journey in The Master Of Strathburn by Amy Rose Bennett. When Jacobite Robert Grant the heir to Strathburn secretly returns to all he left behind to claim his rightful place the ensuing drama that occurs makes for one memorable story. Thrown into the mix is a gently reared heroine set upon by the sinister antagonist out to destroy the hero. With no storage of passion and action the sexual overtone in this work was tangible. Amy Rose Bennett has a knack for taking history and adding her own fictional flair to it resulting in well written and engrossing tales. A historical romance by this author is the kind that will be sure to hold her readers interest and secure their following!

I read other reviews for this book and I wonder: just how picky am I?

I had trouble establishing connection with the characters. I am in no way an expert on history. It is just the heroine's name "Jessie" sounds too American for me to be "Scottish". Personal feeling, has no bearing on historical accuracy.

I think what makes a book different for me is really how "real" the characters are to me. I would not say that Robert and Jessie are poorly portrayed. I can only say that they don't seem real enough to me. And that really screwed up the story for me.

Thank you Netgalley for the free read for an honest review.

I stopped at 5% mostly for the fact nothing drew me in. I already have reservations about the hero being a rake, and from what I surmised from the summary, the excuse for his estrangement from his father appears to be lame.

I have read so many HR's that I can already see where this is all going and I truly don't wish to waste my time with another typical story.

I am just not feeling it. At 5% I already have no interest.

Sorry.

Well written, full of drama, action, steam, intrigue, suspense, love, family, passion, revenge and twists. Loved the cover. Robert is the long lost heir who has been missing after making a mistake and then is forced to leave to save his life. He is a Jacobite , a traitor to England's King. With a price on his head he has to leave Scotland before he gets caught and is beheaded. He does get caught by his brother after being hurt in battle and returns home with a serious wound. He has some help escaping and is able to start a new life . He returns 10 years later after hearing about some not so good things about his brother and his home. Jessie is the daughter of one of the estate workers but has some issues with the brother, Simon. When her father has to leave to do business for the estate, Simon gets his chance to go after her. She makes her escape and after leaving is hurt where she runs into Robert. Jessie and Robert have some misunderstandings from the first meeting and then realizes that they have many feelings between them. The action, passion and intrigue for them is everything you need to keep reading, very hard to put down. The characters are all remarkable whether bad or good, so very well crafted through out this journey. Would strongly recommend this book to all.

Outstanding Romance Story Not to Miss:
I haven't read a book this good in a long time. I was totally captivated by the challenging adventurous plot, the passionate romance, the intriguing characters. I wish I could give this thrilling story more than 5 stars. I would love to see it made into a swash buckling highland movie it's that good of a story.
I was so into this story it had me gripping the pages, yelling at the characters, terrified at the villains' horrible behaviors, and yes, swooning at the passionate scenes.
This is a tissue box, fan worthy love story that I highly recommend.
📣Special shout out to the author for a well written exceptional love story📖.

Jessie and Robert meet under unusual circumstances, both at first not trusting the other with their true identity. But while Jessie might have guessed who he truly is (clever girl!), he completely flunks her identity ( Typical hot- blooded male to rush to the wrong conclusion!) so they tip toe around each other but decide to forge a sort of alliance based on the need to keep an eye on each other and not paying attention to the growing attraction sneaking up on them!!
But greed and envy are great motivators to one’s ambitions and soon Jessie and Robert are faced with a situation that has no hope for a future together.
Original, gripping and sensual, the characters’ forced proximity is one of my favorite parts. I rushed through this book like Jessie and Robert when fleeing from their enemies!

I know! Fall in love with a delightful young miss and then spend the rest of his life protecting and loving her (not necessarily in that order).
This was an absolutely lovely story and I couldn't put it down. Needless to say, I went and fell in love with the hero, of course!
But seriously, the characters are really great and they seemed to 'grow' as their story unfolded.
This is definitely a story I am happy to recommend, having just finished reading an early copy of it, so enjoy, if you choose to read it.

One highland villian Simon, one brother brother and heir Robert, one beautiful strong woman Jessie, all collide in this vivid Scottish novel for an intriguing romance.

Robert is on the run. As a Jacobite, there's a price on his head. His brother Simon is also ready to kill his place as the heir. Jessie is on the run from Simon. These 2 souls get together, the attraction is rampant, the trust is not, but they put their heads together (and eventually their hearts) to get their happy end.

Well written, with a great historic background and details.

2.75 stars

I realize I'm in the minority here but I didn't like this. I found it so hard to believe H&H were so in love after two short days.

There was also way too much of "telling not showing". I wanted more dialogue between the characters to reveal the story, not the author just telling us.

Also, the villains-the stepmother and her son, seemed like caricatures because they were both so totally evil.

Lastly the words used to create sexual tension seemed out of place for the story and characters. It was jarring.

A wonderfully written story. Captivating, intriguing and fascinating. A strong female character that holds her own. A somewhat guilty and broken first born trying to redeem himself. The main characters are well developed and extremely likable. A family on the brink of imploding. I would have given a five star review, but to me the beginning was a little slow starting. With that said, I would recommend this book.

The Master of Strathburn

Here is another wonderful story by Amy Rose Bennett. It is a story of misunderstanding people just because they mistook something they seen. The Hero was afraid that his father still mad at him and still didn't want to see him but it took the heroine to get him to meet with his father in secret. How his brother and stepmother treated Jessie and him was a disgrace.! You will have to read the story to find out how it all worked out.

I love the way the history is woven through the history; it comes alive through the scenes. The characters are vibrant and so real. And, of course, fantastic villains though all the supporting characters are drawn well. The main love story grows over the story with some interesting bumps and twists. Definitely a great start to a promising series!.
