I discovered Tom Leveille VIA Twitter, the posts I had read there were so gut wrenching and real, they caused a physical reaction when I'd read them. When I found out a book was coming I knew I had to buy it. After reading the book though I was unfortunately disappointed, that visceral quality I had come to expect from the tweets was missing from the book. There were a few noteworthy poems or verses, they were evocative enough to earn the 3 stars I gave, but overall it was fairly mediocre.
captures the nuance of longing for something u can’t quite put ur finger on, and grieving the existence of never actually having had it. witty and devastating, beauty in everything sinking. truly is one of those, the people that get it, get it. with that being said though, i don’t think this compilation of poems displays all the depth tom has, it hurts all the same though.
Overall it was okay for me, not great, not rip your guts out, not hooked and can't put it down. There wasn't an index, nor poem titles, but it did have page numbers, though only on every other page. I wasn't a fan of the font, nor the bold on the first letter of each poem. I also wasn't a fan of the book size. It's a little too big, given the small amount of page numbers which leads to it getting bent up a little. I would have made the book a slightly smaller, more standard, size. A few poems were missing words, and one poem had a duplicate word, side by side. It's 98 pages long and out of 47 poems, I liked 9 of them. Interesting writing. The ones I liked, I really liked and the others, just didn't move me in a way that I look for from poetry (or any writing really). I preferred "Poetry With Teeth" by Isabella Brooks and "Whispering Bones" by Drew Hairgrove a little more I think. I'm on the fence as to whether I'd keep the book or donate it to my local library.
