💀 Unrelenting Glen Cook Mercenaries Buddy Read (UGCMBR™) with The Overlord, My Not Nearly Nefarious Enough Son (aka He of the Most Shameful Rating), My Dearest of Wives, My Revoltingly Late Nefarious Daughter, Eilonwy is Slowpoke Once More, and Lee is kinda sorta MIA 💀

Actual rating: 3.834564356776 stars

Slightly never-ending disclaimer:

This is book the fourth in the Dread Empire series. So we Fearless Glen Cook Mercenaries quite logically read it right after book two. Because we’re, um, you know, fearless like that. And because we’re revoltingly obedient minions who follow our Overlord’s instructions blindly like that.

Anyway, this instalment takes us back in time (which I believe is called—in awfully technical terms—a prequel), and relates the Youthful Yet Scheming And Warmongering Adventures (YYSAWA™) of some of the main characters in the series. So yay for that. And double yay for the fact that this book is not Euro-centric as fish, and is set in a most refreshing Middle-Eastern/Arabic setting of old. And triple yay for the focus on Islam instead of Catholicism and stuff.

This is Gustav the Octopus doing the Triple Yay Dance (TYD™), just so you know.

Okay, so, being the Super Quick Witted Barnacles (SQWB™) that you are , you might have possibly perhaps noticed I didn’t rate this book the Customary 10+ Glorious Cook Stars (C10+GCS™). It is most shameful of me indeed, and I shall atone for this unforgivable sin by rereading The Silver Spike at least three times in quick succession . Anyway, the disgusting point is (because yes, there is a point), this isn’t my favorite cookbook CookBook™ ever. And why the fish not?” you ask most obligingly, thus giving me an excellent excuse to share my most fascinating thoughts with you decapodic masses. Because:

① The evil villains and bastardly bastards, although abounding in wondrous Glen Cook fashion, just aren’t as lusciously and yummily villainous and bastardly here as they usually are in Cook’s other books. Yes, they are ruthless, bloodthirsty backstabbing professionals who are up to no bloody shrimping good 24/7, but they lack a certain je ne sais quoi. You know, that little I-don’t-know-what that would have instantly turned them into your Scrumptiously Heartless Neighborhood Machiavellis (SHNM™) and stuff.

Err…No? Oh, and by the way, Pointy Toothed One, I have no idea what the shrimp you think you are doing here, but please go back to your beloved coffin. You are naught but a wimpish vamp and ergo have naught to do with SHNM™. I thank thee kindly for your cooperation.

② There weren’t enough Diabolically Sorcerous Shenanigans (DSS™). Don’t get me wrong, this in no way means that The Fire in His Hands is a Shudder-Inducing Fantasy Rip-Off (SIFRO™) à la Swordspoint. First, because this is Glen Cook, ergo DUH and second because it isn’t. (I hope this explanation cleared things up nicely for you.) Still, the lack of Fantasy elements in the story was a bit well, um, you know, disappointing and stuff. There is lots of military frolicsomeness in the book, which is quite delightful indeed thank you very much, but I like my belligerent stuff over easy and generously seasoned with Wickedly Treacherous Thaumaturgic Antics (WTTA™), so this felt a bit well, um, you know, unsatisfying and stuff.

Now, ① and ② notwithstanding, this is still a Slightly Very Good Book (SVGB™). Because this is Glen Cook, ergo DUH. (This sounds strangely familiar, doesn’t it? I wonder why.) And also because one of the MCs is a Somewhat Moderately Unbalanced Religious Fanatic (SMURF™), which is a plus in any narrative, if you ask me. Then there’s the SMURF™’s nefarious sidekick, who’s a wonderfully cunning bastard with malicious ulterior motives. And finally, there’s my boy Haroun, who I am pre-emptively kidnapping and stashing safely away in my High Security Harem. Because any guy who has the ability to cast spells that induce the symptoms of typhoid is Super Extra Hot (SEH™) and therefore Prime Harem Material (PHM™). So QED and stuff.

Oh, and by the way: so much lovely slaughter! So much enchanting bloodshed! So many charming deaths! I am most excite!

Absolutely, my good chap, absolutely!

Nefarious Last Words (NLW™): nearly a little eager to read book three five I am, because all cougar on my Magically Vindictive Little Haroun (MVLH™) about to go I am. To be continued and stuff.

[Pre-review nonsense]

If there is one thing that never disappoints in Glen Cook's books, it's the Most Delicious Body Count (MDBC™).

That's one deliriously happy Dark Lady, methinks.

Full review to come post haste and stuff.

Reading order for this series, as firmly kindly suggest by Evgeny (aka the Ruthless Glen Cook Overlord™):

Book 1: A Shadow of All Night Falling ★★★★
Book 4: The Fire in His Hands ★★★★
Book 5: With Mercy Towards None ★★★★
Book 2: October’s Baby ★★★★
Book 3: All Darkness Met ★★★★★
Book 6: Reap the East Wind ★★★★★
Book 7: An Ill Fate Marshalling ★★★★★
Book 8: A Path to Coldness of Heart ★★★★
Short stories: An Empire Unacquainted with Defeat ★★★★

For me, this book was OK, but not amazing. Although it was well-written and had some exciting moments, I feel it was a bit lackluster compared to most other Glen Cook novels I’ve read.

The primary issue I had with this story is that it consisted almost entirely of military logistics. Don’t get me wrong...military fantasy is one of my very favorite subgenres, but I prefer when some of the battle tactics are balanced out with other types of scenes (and deeper-feeling characters, something which is usually a strength for this author). Here, the endless campaigning just felt monotonous after a while.

Additionally, Glen Cook is generally adept at channeling the weird and the fantastic in his fiction...in this book, there is a little bit of magic, but not much, and none of the unique strangeness I typically associate with his style. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it does make it seem more generic than a typical Cook novel.

The other problem is not necessarily the fault of the book, rather it’s a problem inherent to prequels in general...that is, we already know what ends up happening to the main characters. This removes a lot of the narrative tension. And although there is the question of HOW everything ends up the way it was in A Shadow of All Night Falling, those questions are unfortunately not answered here; instead, we are left with a novel-length setup for the conclusion to this prequel duology, With Mercy Toward None.

So what are some of the good parts of the book? I will say the prose was a strong point of the story, and while the characters weren’t quite as complex as I prefer, I did like some of them (particularly Haroun and Radetic). The overall premise was also interesting, as it centered on religious strife in a non-Western setting.

So the book wasn’t perfect, but ultimately, even an “okay” Glen Cook novel is still better than a lot of other fantasy out there!

This is book #4 in the Dread Empire series (8 books), but it reads fine without the first three being read. The history of what happened before in the first three books is touched on and does not take away form this story.

Very interesting story...lots going on. I found all the names confusing to keep straight, but this does not take away from the good story. The confusion is on me, not the book.

The book is set in a mid-eastern like area in a fantasy world. The beginnings of a new savior who will unite the scattered empire again and a future emperor who must stop him.

Well-written military fantasy (in many ways similar to Cook's better-known Black Company series), but set in a world with many parallels to actual history - with the addition of magic. The politics are well done and realistic. As with most of Cook's other novels, the dialogue is straightforward without any "faux medieval" elements. This book is actually the first of two prequels (The second is With Mercy Towards None.) to the original Dread Empire trilogy (A Shadow of All Night Falling, October's Baby, and All Darkness Met), and sets the stage for the series, introducing the reader to Bragi Ragnarsson, Haroun, and El Murid. However, The Mocker, also a main character in the series, doesn't appear at all in this novel. In addition to establishing some of the principle figures, The Fire in His Hands lays the groundwork for the big events of the series, with the rise of a militant religious movement similar to Islam, but obviously created by a wizard for his own purposes. For that reason, I'd suggest that devout Muslims might want to give this a pass, unless you're cool with the portrayal of the Prophet (in this case El Murid "the Disciple") being portrayed as a well-meaning and devout dupe of secret powers. 3.5 stars. A shorter book than the rest of the series but with a lot going on.

The Fire in His Hands - Glen Cook (Dread Empire #4) | A Saga Dread Empire dá uma guinada de inspiração árabe! | NITROLEITURAS #fantasia
O melhor livro da saga Dread Empire, que pode ser lido em separado e que faz parte de uma duologia que conta sobre o passado dos personagens principais da saga!
The Fire in His Hands - Glen Cook | 224 pgs, Pocket Books, 1984 | Lido de 12.12.17 a 14.12.17 | NITROLEITURAS #fantasia
SINOPSE
RESENHA

Pretty good for what amounts to a prologue to a longer series (be warned - do not take this book on a trip to the Middle East though...)

While the book bears a lot of similarities with rise of Islam in 7th century it's still an interesting read. It's fast paced enough to keep it interesting while not rushing the plot.

What I disliked is use of terms from "our world" such as "Fabian strategy" (exhausting enemy by refusing set piece battle while keeping up small attacks to sap his strength), "Spartan accomodation" and so on. Such terms wouldn't be familiar to characters in this fantasy world and it shows poor editing on aprt of publishes.

But nonetheless worth reading.

The Cookening continues as I work my way through the extensive backlog of Glen Cook, a great and criminally underrated author.

So, The Fire in His Hands, is book four of the Dread Empire series but part of a prequel duology that fleshes out the backstory of characters like Haroun and Braggi from the main books and rising religious zealot El Murid.

Set in a very Middle Eastern coded landscape this is magic light military fantasy. Written later in Cook's career, the writing has noticeably improved from the first three books and I found myself quite engaged throughout, helped in no small amount by the excellent narration from Stephen Hoye who was clearly having an excellent time.

Brisk and twisty, full of memorable characters, I'm moving straight onto the next book which as sincere a compliment as I can give.

Not bad, 4 stars.

Very reminiscent of Mohammed and Islam's beginnings, with a very dark biblical story vibe. The introduction to the viking-ish characters was very vivid, I think the brothers were my favorites.

What is it with old books and Jihad?

In the last three books, we saw the starting and development of main characters and their faithed meetings.

In this installment, we discover how three of the characters we love and hate, started their journey, from boys, to the men we saw in earlier novels.

Ugh... "the chosen one" and "items of great power" tropes.
It's annoying to read this, although in the time this novel was written/published, it was what was selling, so I can't get too upset.

The Dread Empire series is written differently than the Black Company books. I like the Black Company books better, but this series is also excellent. Cook was very consistent in turning out solid reads.

I was expecting to spend some time with Mocker and Varthlokkur. Neither appeared in this story. Nevertheless I enjoyed this read very much. Sometimes the unexpected can be a very pleasant surprise.
