The Wicked Waffle

Rate this book
One step forward, two steps back. They say you can never go home again. Particularly when home just might be haunted. When aspiring author, and reluctant amateur sleuth, Sonja Reed, leaves her "dream job" in New York City to return to her hometown of Haunted Falls, Colorado, she immediately finds herself pulled into investigating a murder that has rocked the small, peaceful town where she grew up. Sonja goes to work at a local diner, under very strange circumstances, and has to regroup. Faced with getting reacquainted with friends, family and being at home, she nevertheless gives her all to finding out whodunit, and has some decidedly spooky encounters. Will she be able to make life work in her home town? Or will pesky spirits chase her away?

I enjoyed the book a lot even though there were a few inconsistencies in the story. It was a quick, short and entertaining read that kept me interested until the end. The paranormal elements in the first installment are leading me to expect quite a bit more of that in future installments. I am looking forward to reading more of this series.

What do you do when your dreams of becoming a writer have dried up in the big city? You go back home and mingle with ghosts of the past and present of course!

Sonja Reed returns to her hometown of Haunted Falls Colorado after a failed attempt of becoming a published author and reunites with her best friends, Alison. One of the things Sonja looked forward to on the trip back, was heading to the diner Alison worked at and eating the amazing meals that she remembered her hometown for. New York food just wasn’t cutting it.

Reality check for Sonja! The diner is all but closed up and she encounters a most frightening site that chills her to the bone. Alerting Alison to the issue, they discover a body of the most unlikeable town lady, dead in the freezer. Welcome home Ms. Reed. Sheesh! No time like the present for Alison to give the diner to her. Congrats Sonja, you now have your own business formally inhabited by a dead lady that everyone hated. In addition, let’s stick the frozen food you need and that you’re going to serve in that exact freezer. Thinking of that still weird me out.

To add to the craziness that is seeing strange unexplained things and finding a dead body, Sonja’s estranged father comes back on the scene and is then swept away once again as the number one suspect of the frozen and very dead Ronda Smith, heiress of the Smith mansion and estate.

When no one seems fazed by Ms. Smith’s death, Sonja goes on a rampage to clear her father of the murder and pin it on someone else. Why; I don’t know. I would still be over-the-top upset and wondering if he came into town to do just that; commit murder. She jumps to his defense a little too quickly for my taste, but then again, no one asked me. Who could benefit from Ronda’s death though? Let’s start there.

Now that all of that’s over, Sonja shakes it off and prepares to get all the items back into the diner that were formally there. They so happen to be stored at the local church ran by Pastor Williams. Alison, her family, some local boys and Pastor Williams all pitch in to help. Nothing like a little normalcy and a blessing by the priest to make all the crazy that happened go away. Oh no; wrong!

Sonja heads to the mansion to visit the stepdaughter, Belinda Smith, who she used to attend school with and who is a little off her rocker with talk of being able to see spirits. Great idea Sonja! Her visit turns into a séance and it just gets really freaky after that. I won’t say what happens, but I would read this part in a well-lit room.

Needless to say, there is a lot that goes on in a very short time span in The Wicked Waffle. From failing author to owner of a new waffle diner and a surprise ending that makes me want to know when book two will be out, Carolyn did a great joy catching my attention. I wished that there had been more time to develop the characters however. A little more background on the Reed family would have been welcomed. I like the character and I want to love her. I, however, fell for a secondary character instead. Belinda was the one who intrigued me the most. I want to go and hang out with her. She is my kind of fun!

1.5 stars, way too short to be a good read. It has all the bare bones of a good story, but the main character doesn't get involved until the halfway point, the killer is obvious as there isn't anyone else we meet it could be, and the characters are all vaguely defined. Definitely reads more like a first draft than a fully fleshed novel. Also, barely any paranormal elements.

Kindle Unlimited, takes forever to get the actual story started, and not even because setting up needed backdrop information, just sluggishly slow and boring, full of one dimensional cardboard characters and plots. All the detail seems to be saved for the parts that matter the least to the actual story. Unbelievable situations and gotten in to by cardboard characters with equally unbelievable although you saw it coming a mile away 'solutions' along with ridiculously fake 'relationship' tensions.

By the way, when you have a baby as a character, at least decide and stick to whether it's a boy or a girl, and not change it in various sentences from her to him. Also useless made up drama, it adds nothing to a story, except my distaste for it. Blah blah blah, akin to the sound of the adults in a snoopy video. By the way again, few other points; plastic does not melt 'on contact' when thrown even in to a fireplace, the person in the photo is not the person in the photo uh huh, cheap cameraman is also besides the point unless meant cheap camera and it's not much of a point, Why would a place in a book series titled diner of the dead be decorated in 50's style, and gouda waffles uh yuck and I like smoked gouda but it would not go good in a waffle and even worse in crepe type and would be pretty bland and even more bland as a crumbled topping as unlike the description claims it is neither savory nor sweet but smoky, along with more blah blah useless filler crap, and someone can't make a crepe in a regular waffle iron anyway one uses a crepe maker which the writer would know if she had done any actual research for a restaurant which supposedly serves waffles and seemingly some type of crepes. Somebody waiting tables would not be messing with garbage even if bagged up, and on and on, though 10 mind yet painfully numbing useless 'books' all the cookie cutter ridiculously pathetically the same.

Would like to extend my congratulation to the 'writer' of this mess, as before now have never given a 1 to well whatever genre this mess is supposed to have been, saving the 1's for very bad sci-fi romances that are bad excuses for printing crap. For a 'writer' who supposedly has not only a degree but a BA in English, so not able to tell that nor the supposed creative writing credentials claimed, and which obviously did not include anything on how to research anything at all.How can someone who has been away from the town for years still be involved or linked in just about every possible way to every possible case, and how many cases could there even reasonably be in that small of a town.

Okay, maybe I'm just not a 'cozy mystery' lover? I don't even know what that exactly means. But since I seem to be the only person that didn't give this a 4-5 star rating it must be me. This book was just so ridiculous and predictable the entire way through. Except for the big 'what?' moments. Like Sonja trying to make it as a writer in the New York publishing world and gets a job in a 'real' publishing house only to quit spontaneously when her mother tells her her dad is coming home in a week or so after have run off on them 4 years prior. She just quits and hops a plane. After 'trying' to break out as a writer for 9 months. Upon return she finds her 'best friend' has not only gotten married without telling her but has a baby. She didn't want to 'bother her' in her big city life so she just didn't tell her. Wow, they must have been really close;). And then we meet the ghost and the dead body and Sonja sticks her nose into solving the murder, and the cops really sort of let her while continuing to tell her to 'stay out of it'. Luckily for them she doesn't because, yup, she solves their case;). And dad takes off again without any real dialogue whatsoever- see ya! The editing wasn't superb either- Sonja was Songa at one point and the baby was a 'he' and then Cyndy a few pages later- huh??
If this is what 'cozy mysteries' are about I will just stay away. Glad to see there are so many different interests out there- makes for a many different choices!

Sonja Reed wants to be a writer. By day she works for a publisher and by night she works on her manuscript in her tiny New York City apartment. After a phone call from her mother Sonya leaves her "dream job" to return to her hometown of Haunted Falls, Colorado to be reunited with her wayward father. The moment she drives into town Sonya is confronted with murder. It’s not long before she is pulled into investigating the crime in order to help someone she’s known her entire life.

I am not a fan of paranormal mysteries but I am hooked on this series. The setting is vividly drawn for the reader and the character development is very good. The action is well-paced and keeps pulling the reader into the story. I'm looking forward to reading Book 2.

This is a great start to a new series. This story quickly grabbed my attention and kept me reading until I finished the last pages. I thought the characters were realistic and ones I enjoyed spending time with. There are some pretty interesting elements to this story and a few surprises. The mystery was well plotted with a few twists that kept me guessing who the culprit was. The descrption of all the waffles was making me hungry, especially for waffles! I'm looking forward to reading more in this series and can't wait to read what comes next!

I was gifted a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I'm giving this book a four star because I found it, although a very quick read, interesting. When Sonja leaves her job at a publishing company, one not amounting to much, she goes home to a small Colorado town to find mystery, murder and herself trying to solve what has happened. This is a fun, light story that readers will find a good book to carry along for when you want a quick light hearted mystery. I think this series will appeal to those who want a story that isn't so action packed you can't follow it, but has enough suspense to keep you interested.

Sophie Reed thought moving to New York and working at a publishing house would make it easy to publish the novel she was writing. Not really.

When the weekly phone call from her mother revealed her father was coming to Haunted Falls for a few days, she quit her dead end job and hopped a plane for home. Pulling into town after a long day's drive, she stops at the Diner, a local hang-out to find it closed, empty except for a glowing blue face. Calling her best friend, the owner, Sophie waits outside. When she arrives, the two young women catch up a bit while they check out the empty diner. Finally, the only place left to check is the walk-in freezer.

There they find the body of the most disliked woman in town! Who killed her? Why? And what to do about the diner and Sophie's dad, who is in jail for the murder?

It was an easy read that kept me guessing about not only Rhonda's murder but some other questions roaming around town.

“The Wicked Waffle”, first in the 'Diner of the Dead' series, is a very quick read.
Sonja Reed, a young woman with dreams of being a successful writer, returns from New York to her home town of Haunted Falls, Colorado.
Within minutes she finds a dead woman in the freezer of a recently closed diner!
Shortly afterwards she becomes co-owner of the same diner.
And, of course, she investigates the murder.
With the small cast of characters one stands out – in a longer book it would most likely have been a red herring but not this time.
There's nothing particularly wrong with the book, but there is very little that stands out - it is a generic by-the-numbers piece of writing.
It seems to me that the author. Carolyn Q. Hunter, is capable of far better but has opted to churn out a 20-book series that just about ticks enough boxes.
2.5 Stars, raised to 3 Stars.

A fun little mystery.  Sonja Reed is living in New York and has discovered the dream job she got with a publisher is a dead end.  She wants to finish writing her book and get published, but when her mother calls with some major news Sonja returns home.  She has been gone 9-months and discovers the local diner has closed, her best friend is married and has a baby, and finds a dead body.  Things get more complicated as her long-missing father is returning to town.  As the events become ever more complicated, Sonja has to figure out whodunit.  The book features some wonderfully spooky elements that I hope will be developed in future books.  I plan on buying the other books in the series.

This book was a lot of fun and had a lot of twists and turns. Wish it was a little longer! A woman who wants to be a writer returns to her hometown of Haunted Falls, CO feeling frustrated at not being able to get her publisher boss to treat her as anything but a glorified coffee fetcher. When she gets home she sees a ghost-like apparition in the window of the local diner that her friend owns. When they enter the diner they find a dead body in the freezer. Later her father is charged with the murder and she sets out to prove his innocence. I will not go into more detail. Read it if you like ghostly tales!

I don't usually do well with short books, and this one was no exception. There never seems to be enough of anything to pull me in. This wasn't a bad book, but there was a real lack of character development and I didn't want to move in to the setting. I had the murdered pinpointed very early, so that wasn't even a reason to continue. And there wasn't nearly as much paranormal as I was hoping, just a couple of allusions to ghost activity. I guess, all in all, I'm glad it was short so I got through it quickly.

This was an interesting mystery. The mystery was very character focused and I felt like a little bit more time could have been spent and expanding the characters, and the city. It wasn’t that solidified as a story arch, however, it is only the first book of the series. I’m hoping that the mysteries are a little more fleshed out the in the future.

The Wicked Waffle....

Fantastic characters and storyline. Awesome read. Returning home is a great thing to do sometimes. This time returning from New York working in a publishing company was the best. Return home to old friends and family. Start as partners in a restaurant that was going out. So much to read about. A definite must read

The series' debut installment was a little weak and shaky, but it has potential. It's not high literature by any means, but I think it could develop into fun brain candy. I just hope that subsequent books have better editing.

Not great because it is a little "all over the place" with introducing characters and settings and such and because it could use a good editing. However, it was a very quick, sort of interesting read. I might try Book #2 to see if some of these problems are settled or not.

I enjoyed this quick to read cozy enough that I'm interested in reading the next book in the series. Sonja, who really wants to be an author but doesn't seem to be getting anywhere returns home to Haunted Falls, Colorado, she thinks it's because she's going to be reunited with her dad who left her and her mother some years ago. She never dreamed she'd be jumping right into owning and operating a haunted diner. This is not great literature...but entertaining for a comfy read when you have a few hours to kill. I want to read the next book, just to find out who or what she saw in the diner window!!!

Book 1 in The Diner of the Dead Series was excellent. I did find at times that there as just way too much details when describing certain things but from start to finish the book was just good all around. I like how Sonja went from working in a big city wanting to publish a book to going back home and realizing that she could possible write her book at home and be around her friends and family.

So this book is about Sonja Reed who was working in NYC for a publishing company when her mother told her that her father, who has been MIA for 4yrs, was coming back "home" to Haunted Falls, CO. When Sonja arrived home she stopped at her favorite hometown diner, which was closed down, only to see a face floating in the air. Somehow that face lead her to a body inside the diner. But to make matters worse, her father was being accused of the murder and she just had to clear his name. In the mists of all of this, Sonja decided to help her best friend and run the diner and revive it, and she was still able to fit in making some waffles that can only make your mouth water.

This book has plenty of twist and turns and in the end, you will not believe who the killer is. I mean there were so many suspects it was hard to keep up because everyone didn't like this person. What I loved most is the cliff hanger at the end of the book that has to do with Sonja's father. I wonder if Sonja will be able to work on her novel while running the diner. Will her father come back to town? Will Sonja have time to strike up a relationship? I guess we will find out in Book 2.

I was never one for reading paranormal books but this one was great. From start to finish the mystery kept my attention and wanting more. Great first book by Carolyn Q. Hunter.

Wonderful start to a new series! The Wicked Waffle will have you entranced not only because of the great story line but the yummy waffles. I am very excited about this new series and love the story line and characters.
Sonja leaves her dream job in New York to go back home to Haunted Falls, Colorado. Not only because her dream job turned out to just be a glorified coffee grabber instead of writing but her mom had some interesting news. When she does arrive home things aren't exactly as when she left. Her favorite diner has closed down. How things change in a year. She is heartbroken since this diner was such apart of the community. The small town is also dealing with a murder just as she arrives. What are the odds??? Peaceful Haunted Falls isn't quiet anymore. She ends up in the middle of the investigation much to the dismay of Sheriff Thompson.
I loved the twists and turns throughout the book. It has tons of chills and thrills that will have you sleeping with the lights on. Great paranormal mystery. Looking forward to book two.

This delightful mystery caught my eye from the very beginning. This is a story of a young woman who goes to New York to become a writer and failing to accomplish that comes home to her home town. Her first stop in town is the diner she remembers growing up which is boarded shut and locked. She sees a glow in the window and calls her friend Allison they open the door and find Rhonda Smith dead in the freezer. The most hated woman in town. Sonja's father also comes into town and is promptly arrested for the woman's death. Trying to clear her father's name she finds no shortage of suspects. The mystery is solved and the door is left opened for further adventures in this series.

The face in the window

A good start to a new series. Easy reading with a plot that will have you guessing. The characters will evolve through the next book to become more real as at present they are slightly plastic.
A phone call from her mother has her packing up and moving back home. After all her receptionist job is no great loss but the news that her father is coming hone after an absence of 4 years is. After a long journey a stop at the diner sounds perfect. Except for the face in the window. Calling the owner they search the deserted diner to find a body in the freezer. The body of the most hated woman in town. Who killed her and why? Blackmail, attempted murder, ghosts and tell arrest of her father - how is she going to get him free?
