Note: This is a review of all seven of Baldacci's Amos Decker series. These books are a fast read, but all are excellent head-scratching mysteries. Amos Decker, after sustaining a head injury during a pro football game, developed something called Hyperthymesia. Despite my spell-check going off, this a real condition, which goes beyond having a photographic memory into the realm of a perfect, infallible autobiographical memory. Talk about the perfect detective! But even in books like these, plot gets boring if the characters aren't deep. Here, Baldacci delivers in spades. For example, the people in Decker's life view what he has as a gift; however, he often views it as a curse, as he can never forget the day he came home to discover his wife, daughter, and brother-in-law brutally murdered; it's always like it just happened for him. But the cast of supporting characters around him, from his partners to his FBI boss to his clients, are all relatable and believable. This is a great series that makes me want to read more Baldacci books.
A great read while driving in my car. A few of the steps taken to solve the crime seemed a leap of faith. And while not Baldacci's best, certainly interesting, keeping me engaged for almost the entire book. While focusing on the right for racial equality of the 1960's, it brought to the forefront the continuing struggles we have today, but without being preachy.
