Was it a mugging or something more sinister? Either way, a man has been killed. The woman found lying beside him in an alley is in a coma. Answers may be as close as a four-year-old boy found abandoned in downtown Minneapolis, but he won’t communicate. For Ray Schiller and his partner Detective Dick Waverly, the silence is maddening.
Jealousy? A custody battle? Their list of suspects and motives only grows when the discovery of a second murder victim complicates their case.
Another kind of silence is troubling Ray on a more personal level. Waverly is keeping something from him, and the implications are becoming increasingly disturbing.
In this fourth outing, Ray Schiller, a detective with the Minneapolis Police Department, gets called out to a murder scene. He’s got a well-dressed man shot dead, a well-dressed woman hanging on by a thread, a toddler witness who can’t talk, a recalcitrant witness, a long list of suspects and not much evidence to go on. The subplots are interesting as well - a growing distance between Schiller and his partner, Ray Waverly; and Schiller’s usual inability to balance work and life.
I always enjoy reading this series. It’s a well-written, traditional detective series that showcases dogged police work and the humanity of the officers. Schiller is a flawed and very human detective. His job consumes him, and he struggles to have a home life while honoring his passion for justice. The relationship between Schiller and his partner, Ray Waverly, seems very real to me. The secondary characters are well-drawn, even the minor ones, and there are occasional moments of humor to go along with the darkness.
I read this over the course of a day and had such a good time, I went right on to book 5 (which was equally good).
Amazon lists these as standalone stories; and I did jump from book two to book four without too much disorientation. I’m compulsive and I like to experience life at the same time the characters do, so I still recommend reading them in order. But you could start with this one and not feel left out or like you’re missing something.
Ray and his partner Dick are at it again. This book will keep you on your toes and keep you guessing all the way to the end. Without giving away anything, it wasn't who I thought it was.
I’ve read the complete Ray Schiller series and enjoyed it so much I went back and re-read 1 - 6
Since I didn’t write a review the first time a quick one for the second read.
The Ray Schiller series is one of my favorites, though I only gave this one four it is more I’m a tough customer, as my wife claims, but my fours are five for most. Plus, I given most of the Ray Schiller series a five which is real rare for me. So despite a little dip n my rating down don’t let my curmudgeon personality dampen your decision in reading. The series is a favorite
Doering has done it again in book 4 of this 6 book series; spinning a nail biting, edge of your seat mystery with my favorite detectives Ray and Dick. Loved it!
