Hunter Jackson was on top of the world when that phone call came.

His third X Games title still fresh, a female in his lap, and sponsors ready to offer him any deal he wanted--the kid from California had made it big. And then his phone rang. And it kept ringing. And that news that no one wants was waiting for him on the other line. "It's Mom," his sister said. And like that, his world changed.

Months later, Hunter isn't skating--he's at home, taking care of his mom, and keeping the rest of his family together, flipping houses to pay for the medical bills that just keep piling up. In need of a new foreman, Hunter gets a shock when Isabel Rojas shows up to his job site, more gorgeous than any woman he can ever remember, and a mouth that whips of Spanish insults with deadly precision.

Isa comes from a house full of dominant men ready to tell her what to do—she loves them, but she refuses to be the woman who takes orders from a man for the rest of her life. She’s determined to be independent: her own apartment, her own job, her own person. In a family as large and committed to each other as hers, this is not an easy task. Two years of community college, an AA in construction management, and halfway through her apprenticeship as an electrician, Isa knows what she wants, and she’s on a mission to claim it.

When she shows up on Hunter Jackson’s job site, she has a chip on her shoulder, and an already formed opinion about the kind of man he is: rich, entitled, careless. The kind who broke her sister’s heart years ago—the kind Isa swore she would never let into her own life.

But plans don’t always work the way we want.

Assumptions can be wrong, people can change, and hearts don’t always listen to logic.

I am the youngest of three daughters and I think this is the reason I enjoy writing about love so much.

I come from a family of high school sweethearts, save myself (thank God), and I have watched how finding love, the real kind, can make a person stronger. My parents have inspired me every day because they found each other at eighteen, got married at nineteen, and never looked back. Now, 35 years later they are still going strong and it makes me realize that love really does aide us in all things.

I write young and new adult books because I think it's the time period in our lives that is the most difficult and I enjoy love stories because we all need hope. Reading about love gives me hope, so I hope my writings about love do the same for any reader who happens to glance at the pages.

I have a daughter, a Great Dane, and a beautiful husband. I love books, coffee, and my family...and shoes. Just saying.

This was a fantastic story. It just wasn't for me. It was really emotional and it kinda brought me down.

Hunter is a professional skateboarder. He travels all over the place but his mother gets sick so he goes home to help take care of her. Okay, that part isn't too bad. But then you add in the fact that every single one of his friends and family had a shitty life and is currently undergoing something that is emotionally hard.

-- Here is what I'm talking about.--His sister is struggling with school and dealing with her mother. Mal is in love with Naya but he never tells her. Brooks' sister dies and he runs away. Jordan(who is dating Brooks) his heartbroken because he left and because she was good friends with his sister. Maya had a terrible thing happen to her when she was 15 and she hasn't gotten over it and she is in love with Mal but won't tell him again. Isa's sister is dating a guy who is a liar and never wants to see his kid. The kid, Teo, is wanting to see his dad but is disappointed every time he doesn't.

I am exhausted after reading this book. Usually there is some happiness mixed in with the sad but there really wasn't in this book. They were having sex, sure, but the love aspect didn't happen until the very end. Both characters struggled with being in a relationship the whole book. They never went on a date and they never had actual conversation, they just had sex and then fought at work. Honestly I just didn't get it.

AND that ending... REALLY? I do not get that at all. To go from running away from each other to that? No and also Isa asking? Totally lame.

I liked Isa for the most part. If it wasn't for her sassy comebacks and her crazy family, I would have hated the book completely. At least I did laugh a few times when they had a family get together.

Like I said, this book just wasn't my style. I was hoping for more. If you are good with the depressing emotional stuff then this is a good book for you. I just don't like to feel depressed after I read a book. I want to be happy or at least understanding and I didn't get that with this book. I am just depressed right now..

The Grind is the second book in the Vert series and although things that happened in book #1 are referred to (characters, incidents etc) this book can certainly be read as a standalone. However, I absolutely loved book #1 - Vertical Lines - and I highly recommend you read it!

Book #2 got off to a bit of a slow start for me but I think this was mostly due to the fact that (as an ARC) my copy had countless editing issues of all sorts and it was just a little harder going than I'd expected.

I must quickly state though that I rapidly overcame these issues (my eyes and brain adjusting to the issues, which I am certain will be dealt with before publishing) and I absolutely fell in love with Hunter.

Hunter is a great character. Protective, fair, strong and dominant, with fiery temper, that he somehow manages to contain. He's dependable, even when it's not wanted.
I loved the bond the three men have in this series, which started in book #1 and grows as this story progresses.

Isa, to be honest, drove me mad at times but I could totally understand her personality too. She's independent and strong and will not lean on anyone but herself.

All the characters in this story (as with book #1) are well thought out and well developed. You can't help but feel invited into their close knit relationships and empathise with the things they're all going through.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I'm absolutely dying to get my hands on Mal and Nala's story....it's like an addiction! I NEED to know!

This contemporary sports romance introduced a multitude of poignant topics. Cancer, eating disorders that lead to death and even rape were mentioned.

When I decided to one click Vertical Lines it was one of those spur of moment things and solely based on the description since I’d never read anything by Kristen Kehoe before and once I dove into the book, I found I really enjoyed it and couldn’t wait for the next one to come out so I could catch up with everyone and all I can say is that The Grind did not disappoint.

In Vertical Lines the details about why Hunter had returned home so suddenly, started up a construction company and kept being evasive about when he would return to the skating world to compete and defend his X-Games title were extremely murky. So, to find out that it was because his mom had been diagnosed with cancer was heartbreaking, but it showed the kind of man Hunter is. His family, both by blood and the one he chose, mean the world to him and he’ll drop everything for them, even it means giving up what means most to him. This causes a huge inner turmoil inside of him as to what his future holds, especially when his mom’s is so uncertain, and turns him a little broody and surly, but once he gets a few good kicks in the ass from the people he cares so much about, he starts to realize that sometimes you just have to roll with the uncertainty and do what’s good for you.

Isa took a bit to warm up to because she really does have a huge chip on her shoulder. Her need to prove that she is an independent woman and can be just as good, if not better, than any man in the construction game makes her extremely combative and she tends to make mountains out of mole hills. Also, while she hates to be stereotyped, she has no issue doing it to others. What kept her from being on my hit list was when we finally got to see her with her family and learn about her experiences growing up and how they’ve influenced her. Does it fully excuse her behavior? No, but it does put it in a different light. Thankfully, she does wear the entire mantel of being an independant woman and puts on her big girl panties and apologizes when she knows she was wrong.

Oil and water. Enemies to Lovers. That’s Hunter and Isa’s relationship throughout much of the book and while it could have had me tossing my Kindle into the freezer, it didn’t. Yes, many of their head butting had me rolling my eyes, but knowing what they were both going through personally made it less aggravating and then when they both finally admit that they are attracted to each other, it became entertaining. So despite the eye rolling moments, I really liked how their relationship evolved. It felt real and the chemistry between them was hot.

The pacing was well done and though there were some editing issues I’m going to chalk it up to this being a ARC and that they will be caught and corrected before it’s published. I liked the way the book started and gave a refresher of what happened in Vertical Lines as well as how connected Brooks, Mal, Nala and Jordan are to Hunter and each other because they are a huge part of each other’s lives and the impact they have on each other is huge and I’m now going to cross my toes that the next book in the series is about Mal and Nala.

THE GRIND by Kristen Kehoe was such an amazing read, I literally could not put it down, the characters in this book will grab a hold of your heart and run away with it.

I don't know if I have the right words to describe how amazing this book was, the way the author wrote the story will have you in tears after the first chapter and then crying again near the end. The characters in this book are wonderfully written and the author makes it very easy for us to fall in love with Hunter and Isabel and fall in love right along with them.

Hunter Jackson is at the highest in his skateboarding career, on top of the world, that is until his world comes crashing around him when he is called home when his mom falls ill. For family Hunter puts his life on hold to stay home and take care of his mother and make sure that his sister is able to continue her schooling, this what he knows is best for everyone. Hunter re-establishes his business of buying and flipping houses, and since his foreman (Brooklyn main character from book one) has left him he hires a new one, what he didn't count on was that hire to be a women, Isabel. Isabel is a women after my own heart, she is strong willed and wont take no crap from any one, let alone a man. Isabel and Hunter are like oil and water together, they fight constantly and very rarely agree on anything, so when they cross a line of boss and employee things are likely to get messy. I love the back and forth between Hunter and Isabel, it makes for a weird and wonderful relationship at the same time, if that makes any sense at all. The suspense at the end of the book will have you on pins and needles and wondering till the end of the book if Hunter and Isabel will be together.

THE GRIND by Kristen Kehoe is book two in The Vert series, and book one is a must read as the characters from book one are also in book two but let me tell you both book one and The Grind are worth the read and should move to the top of your to read list. I would give THE GRIND 5/5 stars.

I loved how Hunter would get excited over the simple things, "my whole body tenses, a delicious tingle ripping up my spine. “My house or yours?” I really liked how Isabel and Hunter were when they were together, "...now turn around and stop groping me, or Mamá will have us in confession..." I really liked this book.

It feels like just yesterday I was a gushing fangirl talking about how much I loved the first book in the The Vert Series (Vertical Lines)... okay it very well might have been yesterday because I seem to find my way back to those pages very often (I love it THAT much). But now I get to talk to you all about the recent new release, THE GRIND.

Much like it's predecessor in the series, The Grind is getting a definite spot in the Man Crush Monday round up. Oh you want me to tell you why? My pleasure. HUNTER JACKSON that's why.
In the previous book VERTICAL LINES introduced us to a group of friends that were more like family. They captured my heart and left me aching to know more. In the development of the The Grind I loved that the timeline runs concurrent and overlapping the events of the first book. For new readers it stands pretty solidly on its own but for those who are following the series it's nice to get those special peeks and deeper insights into the characters that we have come to know and love.
Once again Kristen Kehoe has taken real life and infused her characters with it. They aren't perfect, they make mistakes and get in their own way; but you feel a connection because they feel real. Their journeys have realistic bumps and life altering potholes but watching them forge ahead as they chase down unexpected love in spite of it... yeah that's a real life love story.

Hunter Jackson is an amazingly solid character. From the prologue I was pretty much convinced that I was in love with him and my feelings never wavered. He has the maturity I always yearn to see in characters and displays it in such an honorable self sacrificing type of way that I couldn't help to be Team Hunter on this one. Introverted, strong, and sexy Hunter is the one character that I didn't expect to affect me as much until I read the first few pages of his story. He shoulders a world of responsibility and worry without asking much of anyone and is the reason my emotions got their workout during this reading experience. He's loyal and protective and the way he takes care of his girls is above and beyond amazing.

Isabelle... *sigh*. There's much to be said for this fiery, fiercely independent character. She exhausted me lol. That said, I couldn't help to be proud of her full journey. She's a character that will probably have you ready to shake her once or twice (or a dozen - resident Hunter fangirl speaking here)... but she has reasons for her defensive nature and her reasons are valid. Having seen what can happen when your all is wrapped up into the wrong person, Isabelle is wary of not just the wrong person, but all persons. While I did find myself frustrated with her I don't think we can fault her for being the character she is... if she was a male character I think many people would still swoon over her "alpha" behavior. She's grown up in a protective environment having to prove her ability to hold her own and is now in a male dominated profession having to do the same.

Scene Stealer Characters:
Brooks and Jordan because... Brooks and Jordan. LOVE.
Nala... I swear this girl just grows more and more intriguing and endearing. I am absolutely dying for her full story with Mal. Those two just get my heart going in all the right ways and I need more... NEED.
Vanessa... sweetheart and sass. I adored her appearances throughout the book because it gives us a revealing look at that layer of Hunter's character.

I'm recommending this one with 4.5 Stars!

I got this book from net gallery for an honest review.

OMG I'm lost for words after reading this book, which has never happened before. This was a damn good read which made me laugh and literally cry because that's how amazing it actually was.

The book started off slow but I wasn't disappointed because you get the chance to familiarise yourself with Hunter. Hunter is a professional skater but one phone call from his sister concerning his mum's health changes his life. Hunter's family is going through an emotional roller coaster and he is their rock: financially and emotionally.

Hunter has several friends who he calls his family and they support him.

Hunter meets Isa in less than desirable circumstances: she is the foreman of his new house renovation. There's definitely friction between Hunter and Isa and they both drive each other absolutely nuts. They fight, argue and disagree over all sorts of things concerning the building site.

Isa has grown up surrounded by over protective brothers/dad and therefore fights to obtain some sort of control at the building site. She strongly feels that Hunter treats her differently because she's a girl and can't handle a hammer.

Isa has serious misconceptions about Hunter in regards to him being a rich playboy but she couldn't be more further from the truth.

Isa finds Hunter attractive, it's his striking eyes but he doesn't really acknowledge his attraction towards her until he sees her and her siblings at a club. She's dressed to impress: wearing a hot, sexy dress and Hunter can't help but stare into those piercing eyes.

They are attracted to each other and Hunter can't help losing control whenever she's around because she makes him completely insane. At a moment of weakness, they have sex in at a building sight: which is hot, animalistic, and raw. He dominates her and asks her what she wants him to do: making her realise her pleasure is in his hands. Hunter and Isa have an intense yet passionate chemistry.

They spend time together and she interacts with his friends, forming new friendships. But a fight with her brother leaves her on edge: what happens when he leaves to resume his skating career? Will she end up like her sister? Her fears overrule her heart and she pushes him away.

Hunter leaves but he feels like a part of his heart is missing. A phone call from Flippe stops his heart beating, and he's on the next flight home to be the woman he loves.

I actually cried at one point towards the end when Teo talks to Hunter at the hospital - this little boys words touched my heart.

Lots of funny moments in the book and the interactions between Isa and Hunter are always entertaining. The characters developed nicely throughout and written in both their perspectives which gives you a better insight into their feelings. This was an incredible book to read which fills you up with so many emotions: your laughing one minute and crying the next.

The author has delivered a fantastic book which touches your heart in all the right places. I'm definitely adding this author to my favourite author list and will definitely check out her other titles.

Right off the bat, something about this book seemed to grind me the wrong way. Being an ARC e-book, I’m going to give the benefit of the doubt that the at times short/choppy sentences near the beginning will be addressed before final publication. However, what can’t be overlooked is at nearly 30% I realized too much time was being spent on several sub-characters and not enough on the main couple. The hero and heroine seemed to rarely interact. It’s kind of hard to have a romance when the couple isn’t even in the same room or other people’s woes are being discussed. Obviously, that eventually changed, but I found myself resenting when sub-characters kept stealing the show.

It didn’t help the hero obviously had no problem using his fame as a skateboarder to score with girls and ogled every good looking female he came across either. It was definitely a shot to this true romantic’s heart when he did spend the night with a random woman he met earlier on the street simply because he was feeling restless. Yes, it was after meeting the heroine. Again, I think any hanky-panky should have been reserved for the main couple. I felt at times I was twiddling my thumbs waiting for their relationship to begin.

Eventually they do have a heated but very brief spontaneous sexcapade. However, he soon gets a call and completely ignores her, while she does a walk a shame to her car. I know we are supposed to like the hero because he gave up his career temporarily to help take care of his mom and is always there for his family and friends, but, honestly, he wasn’t my ideal good guy kind of hero. It was also a shame to see this strong heroine’s character diminished by her doubts/uncertainty regarding him. Ultimately, even she had little faith he would stick around long term. Yes, they end up having an affair they keep hidden. Then there is a very predictable separation followed by a tragic event that reunites them.

All in all, I found this to be mostly entertaining, but skimmed through lots of it as there was too much focus on other people/events. Their romance seemed like a subplot at times. And, again, I knew I was told the hero was a good guy, I just didn’t always feel it. For this reviewer, the heroine is what made this story worth reading.

Title: The Grind, Series: The Vert Series (Book 2), Author: Kristen Kehoe, Pages: not listed, stand-alone, HEA, some violence, a couple VERY steamy scenes, strong/sassy heroine, hero was with other women.

I am not sure what is wrong with me (if there is something wrong) but it seem I hit a patch of books that are not fully developing their potential. At least if you ask me for my opinion. Just this morning I was asking my co-blogger if I might be spoiled ?

Can there be such a thing as being spoiled by books? I am also not sure if I should hope for a yes or a no when asking that question.

Anyway I just read The Grind (The Vert Series #2) by Kristen Kehoe. It is the second book in a series but it was my first book by this author. My co-blogger Kate read the first one and liked it so I thought I’d give it a try as the blurb sounded good. And I saw she has this one also on her reading list - so I will compare my thoughts with hers once she finishes it.

Ms. Kehoe’s writing is solid and the plot is well developed. My problem was more that I could not place myself inside the story. My connection with Hunter was distant from the first page on. And with Isa I could not find any common ground at all.

Basically the way those characters are described should feel appealing to me so I am not even sure myself what was wrong. But I know that there was something wrong because I felt the urge to skim pages – which is not good at all.

Maybe it was because the pace of the book was slower than I expected but it felt that even though the plot was really good the people did not get going.

Hunter’s and Isa’s arguments and disagreements felt so real that I had a hard time recognizing the attraction they were supposed to be feeling towards each other.

I am sorry if I am again the odd one out here – but don’t let my thoughts on the story stop you from reading it for yourself.

The writing is really good and the plot might work out just fine for you.

This was a fresh , new read for me . This book had everything . It dealt with very real issues people face everyday . Just in this case , the main character Hunter , was in the public spotlight . This book is written in a way every one can relate .

The successful son , Hunter , who was an X Games champion in skateboarding dealing with personal issues that are beyond his control and money . Money can't buy his way out of the cancer that grips his mother . He is at the top of his field when his mother gets very ill and he chooses to leave his success behind to flip houses and take care of his mom . As the medical bills pile up , so does the stress of losing sponsorship's and the money that goes along with them . When Hunter shows up to the job site of a new house he bought to flip , one Isabel Rojas is there , smart mouthed and sassy !

Hunter can't take his eyes off of Isa as she is the most beautiful woman he has seen . Hunter has had his share of women while skateboarding , but there is something about the sharp tongued Isa that has him wanting more from her than to work on the job .

Isa is sick of being ordered by men that think they know better . She is a very strong , independent , self assured woman that makes very clear she can do anything a man can do and calls out anyone who is wrong . I love this about her . The attraction between Hunter and Isa cannot be denied . Will they end up together or ripping each other's heads off ? Things are not always as they appear .

This was a fun book to read . It was my first skateboarding romance book and I really enjoyed the back story . The character development was very good . I found myself laughing at some of the sharp wit that Isa had . If you are looking for something different to read , this is the book for you .

Opposites really do attract...

If I were being honest I would have to say that The Grind started off really slow for me. There's a lot of back story and character development that takes place until up to about forty percent of the way into the book. I found Hunter to come off as controlling and arrogant and Isa was just as bad. I thought about just putting the book down because their was no appeal for me to continue.

So why four stars? I very rarely put down a book once I've started it so I continued the journey with Hunter and Isa. Inevitably, traits I found at first to be annoying and unappealing began to morph into endearing and soon I was sucked into their story and ultimately found myself pulling for these two to figure it out and overcome their own personal demons. It's a long journey and at times a painful one just like everyday life but in the end the best things in life don't come easy. Maybe that is why at first I found this story to be unappealing but ultimately in the end I found real value in reading their story. Yes, their story cut a little close to home I won't deny but ultimately it is their story to tell.

I hope you decide to give Hunter and Isa's story a chance as once the story comes together it all makes sense. I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Grind and hope you do as well.

Lastly, I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I was looking forward to Hunter's story after reading Vertical Lines and this did not disappoint. I loved that the author creates strong female characters and Isa is no exception. As I was reading I could "hear" her dialogue with herself and with others so passionate, self-assured, ready to take on anyone. Hunter, a planner and always in need of being in control. His control has been thrown for a loop. I liked finding out why he was home from the circuit because there was little mention in the first book in the series. I enjoyed his character. I loved the banter and sparring between Hunter and Isa, it was like verbal foreplay. You could feel the tension between the two characters before they acted on it. I do wish there was more about any of the time the two spent together after finally admitting they wanted each other. There is angst in this story and I was teary-eyed at parts near the end. These are two very stubborn characters, one needing to be the protector and the other not wanting to be protected. I liked how these characters grew throughout the story as well as how some of the other characters grew as well. I look forward to Nala and Mal's story. Highly recommend this series.

The various story lines draw you in until you don't want to do anything, but get to the end.Hunter Jackson is a street skater that is at the top of the pack. He has won 3 Games titles. When his mother is diagnosed with Cancer he comes home to San Diego to help her. He flips houses to make money to pay for her medical expenses. His new foreman is Isabel Rojas. They argue about what needs to be done on the job site, but Isa knows Hunter is Jefe- the boss. Hunter's friends, Malcolm and Brooks, are there for him as they have been for years. Mal is also a skater and is off making a name for himself. Brooks is recovering from his sister's death. So Hunter has promised to look after their girlfriends, Nala and Jorden, while they are away.
The stories go back and forth between Hunter and Isa. Isa's family also has struggles that lead to a climax that will have you at the edge of your seat. Hunter and Isa try to work together while they deal with family issues and their attraction to each other. This is a wonderful story that you won't want to end.

I was so excited to see Kristen Kehoe got the sequel to the Vert series available right away. I fell for the skateboarder in Jordan and Brooks story wanting more of Hunter. I have to say Isabel was definitely very unique in this story didn`t really see a Hunter and Isabel going on. Then again Kristen Kehoe proved me wrong in this book. I loved how Hunter tries so hard to be strong yet when it comes to a spitfire like Isabel Rojan and he is well putty in her hands. The sex between them is explosive making their attraction sizzling. This is more than just a boss and employee relationship but one where a man has to realize there is only so much he can handle. Kristen Kehoe just did so much in Hunter I applaud her for making this man strong yet vulnerable in a way it scares him as well. Can`t wait though for Nala and Malcolm`s story definitely waiting for those two

After reading Vertical Lines I couldn't wait to read more. Although this story was a little slow getting started the story was still really good. It is an emotional read though. I loved seeing lots of different parts of Hunter and really felt for him. Isabel is a sassy, strong woman that feels she has to prove herself at every opportunity. She could be a little much at times but hey, she's female, can't we all?! It certainly wasn't enough to put me off though. I really liked this story and can't wait for more.

I loved everything about this story! I could not put this book down!! This book has a bit of everything angst, witty banter, fire between the main characters and yeah it has some teary moments. I loved getting a glimpse at the characters that were introduced in Vertical lines, not that you have to read that first but it does help, and enjoyed the dynamics of Isa’s family. Kristen Kehoe just keeps getting better and better!

Sweet and endearing read about family, and friends becoming family. The connection between Hunter and Isa is exciting to watch considering Hunter wants to have complete control. Unfortunately, Isa, trying to establish her independence, wants nothing of Hunter's dominance. Watch how these two knock heads and make up!

Generally, I don't review a book that I don't finish, but I felt that I got far enough in this.

DNF. I don't like Isabelle. She is very negative, judgmental, and entitled, without a glimpse of any noteworthy redeeming qualities.

Hunter is a horndog and seems to look at every woman, except Isabelle, in a "Is she f*ckable?" way. I can appreciate his loyalty to his friends and family, but it also doesn't make a lot of sense that he is keeping his mom's cancer quiet with everyone. The fact that he won't even tell his sponsors why he isn't skating (I find it hard to believe they wouldn't respect his wishes to keep his reasons out of the media) coupled with the way he has no problem constantly showing up pretty late to work things just makes him seem very irresponsible. That makes it harder to like him.

There is also too much about every. single. character. And they are ALL miserable. Eating disorders, death, weird lack of communication, disappearing for months at a time, being "dumb enough to get knocked up by an a*hole California boy"... I got to 1/3 of the way through this and the two "main" characters had barely interacted with one another at all, or even thought about one another except to hate them. There isn't any fun banter between them either. :/

Living in Southern California, I grew up with and know quite a few First Generation Americans, like Isabelle is supposed to be. And none of them talked like she did, or had the bad attitude she has. Did they know English and another language? Yes, generally. Did their English sound like it was their second language? No. Did they have accents like their parents? No, except a bit when they were speaking their parents' language. Isabelle's voice sounds more like she is an immigrant than a child of an immigrant to me.

Lastly, I do understand that I was reading an ARC and that often means the final proofreading pass hasn't been done, but this was riddled with typos, wrong words (e.g. describing a character as being a "dominate" rather than dominant), and missing words. The Spanish thrown in was also confusing and left unexplained, especially when Isabelle kept using Colombian slang/swear words that the Kindle Translate feature couldn't explain. Generally, context can help even when you don't know the language, but a few words I checked (I enjoy verifying and learning new words) proved that a non-Spanish speaker would miss some of what was said if they didn't translate it.

I received an ARC from the publisher through NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review. This is no way influenced my review. My opinion is my own.

This story was a bit hard for me to get through...there was so much sadness, hurt, despair and just overall discord over not only the storyline, but it's characters, that I had a difficult time connecting on an emotional level. On a purely literary level, the storyline is well written, though I'm expecting that the grammatical errors in the ARC will be addressed prior to release, outside of that, I could not, as well, connect with the characters because of the myriad of different problems in each of their lives, and then together as couples and the group as a whole. The story addresses, or brings to light, many social issues, but having them all converge within one book was too much on an emotional level for me to thoroughly enjoy.

This book was provided by Netgalley for my honest review.

Just when I thought that I couldn't love one of Kristen's characters more, I get to meet Hunter. He sweet, caring and strong. He would do anything for his family by blood and by heart. His bond is strong with his family and I love seeing them interact.

Isa is strong willed and opinionated. She's everything I strive to be and I love her feistiness. She can hold her own and give just as good as she gets. She's the perfect match for Hunter and I love all their sexual tension.

Well done Kristen! I can't wait to see what you come up with next for Mal and Nala! It's going to be like the Fourth of July!

Unfortunately, this was a DNF for me. I couldn't connect with the characters and found Isabelle to be moderately annoying. She seemed to have a chip on her shoulder, which I'm sure changes as the story continues, but I didn't make it that far. There was also this feeling like I was missing something. Though this is a standalone, some of the references would have probably gone over better if I read the first book in the series.

The premise of this book sounded good. 23 percent in I gave up.
It wasn't for me. There was so much going on... too much!
