Alix: Book one of the Coven’s Grove Chronicles

Alix hadn’t always been gifted. In fact, she hadn’t been or done much of anything until after she’d turned sixteen—that’s when things had really gone south. Her mother was murdered, her father...well, no one knew where he was. That left Alix on her own in a selfish world filled with people who didn’t give a damn.

Nine years of hell had passed since her sweet sixteen, and the discovery of her gift. So far, she’d managed to handle everything the world had thrown at her. Everything, until Troy Sullivan strolled into the tattoo parlor where she worked.

She had known men before, sure, but none of them could hold a candle to the man that walked up to the counter, looking to get some art done. As fate would have it, Alix finds herself on the run with the would-be man of her dreams, while a band of fanatics, hellbent on finding her, give chase.

All Alix had ever wanted was a normal life. What she’d gotten was a messed up tragedy. And now, she’ll have to fight tooth and nail just to keep that.

Building friendships isn’t easy...building a coven is even harder. The Coven’s Grove Chronicles is a saga about the gathering of thirteen women who possess extraordinary powers. Witches all, they must come together in a sisterhood that will nurture and protect them. The secrets of the arcane will be unlocked for each, if they survive long enough to learn. Join them on their journeys of discovery and hardship, and of course, to meet the dashing men they find along the way.

WARNING: 18+ Steamy sex scenes and mild profanity. HFN

I downloaded Alix as a free ebook from Amazon. Okay, this is a 2.5 read for me, but I rounded up because the story line was good-- and I enjoyed much of the book, well except for the sex scenes which I found painfully immature and cheesy-- from his jackhammer hips, and the flexed mountains of his chest, to her screaming in ecstasy (and a variety of similar euphemisms), I was rolling my metaphorical eyes and skimming over some of the worst sex I've read in a while. There were also noticeable spelling/grammar issues but nothing too obnoxious.

I received an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The story opens with Miranda, a witch in a coven, using a summoning spell, to attract more witches.
Enter, Alix, a young tattoo artist with extraordinary gifts that she’s managed to keep hidden up until now. One day, an EMT worker (loved the idea of the love interest working in a ‘rescue’ profession) comes in for a tat and the chemistry between them is seismic. Alix is so taken with Troy Sullivan, that she does something she’s never done before: she imprints his tat with a protection charm.
He eventually finds his way back to her with questions as he knows she’s done something to him. Unfortunately, he shows up at the same time the witch hunters show up at her door. And that’s when the real trouble starts.
I have read lots of paranormal romances, but this book has to be one of my favorites. What I really loved was the main character, Alix. She was a little edgy with purple fringe and tattoos and I felt that was something just a little bit different. You don’t see many females in fiction in that role of tattoo artist. The tension between her and Troy was a palpable and the chemistry was hot. We learn more about their relationship and why Alix chose him from Miranda.
It’s well written and well-paced. It’s a nice combination of romance, supernatural and conflict. My only nitpick would be that it ended abruptly but it does leave me wanting to read more of the series. Also I would have liked to know more about the demons and why they were specifically after Alix. But overall, a great book that I couldn’t put down.

This book starts with a prologue that didn't make sense to me when I read it, however, at the end of the book I realized what it was all about. I really liked the idea of Alix working in a tattoo parlor especially after learning about her gift. I enjoyed the originality of Alix's gift and how that played into a "tattooing talent" when she ended up working in the shop about 7 years after her mother's murder. This was the first sign of things are looking up for Alix after everything she had been through. This only lasted about two years, ending not long after Troy walked through the parlor door...you will have to read the book to find out what happens. I gave this book four out of five stars simply because so many people died, including one character that I thought could have a future in the series. I do understand why a great number of them were killed to move the story where it ended up. I definitely want to continue the series.

Tattoo artist Alix Morgan has a gift she discovered at sixteen. She can picture something in her mind and make it appear. With her art she sometimes adds a little extra boost. When a handsome medic comes for protection, he gets more than he bargained for.
EMT Troy Sullivan is going into a very dangerous situation. It can't help to have a good luck charm in the shape of a tattoo.
The attraction between our heroine and hero explodes into life and starts something neither of them could imagine. They are thrown in at the deep end when hunters come.
There are lots of magical battles and some devastating losses for our characters to face. The people behind the scenes also have a big impact on what happens.
This is the start of what I'm sure will be an addictive series. This was very exciting and I am looking forward to reading much more of the series.

Alix has been alone since her mother was murdered. At sixteen she was suddenly alone on the streets with unusual abilities. She was eventually taken in by a tattoo artist who saw her art all over buildings. She decided to infuse some of her magic into a protection tattoo for Troy, who she was instantly attracted to. She blew the shop apart, and he took off with fear in his eyes. While she was home feeling sorry for herself, her best friend Sam showed up covered in blood, babbling about everyone at the shop being dead. A few minutes later Troy showed up, and in his heels, the evil brings that killed everyone at the shop. The three of them manage to get away, but are pursued everywhere they go. Alix has to explain her strange abilities, hoping that they will forgive her. This is the first in series coven stories.

This book was a nice quick read that kind of pulled you in and didn’t let you out until the end.
The story is really quick paced so there’s really no chance to get bored with it. Mostly the book is full of action and adventure and danger but I like that there is still a romantic side to the story as well.
The characters are interesting and although a lot of them get killed, Troy and Alix stay strong and they relationship manages to grow. I think this book series will be very interesting to read and you can’t really get the full picture by reading this one book but you have to continue with the series and that is what I’m planning to do.
All in all, this book was a nice quick read and I really enjoyed it.

This is action-packed to say the least. There is enough set up for the rest of the series but I thought Alix's character could have been developed a bit more. I really liked her friend and wish she would be in future volumes. I also felt that Alix's past wasn't dealt with. It seemed like the death of her mother and moving around all her childhood would indicate her mom was a witch or at least knew about the supernatural. She seemed to be about to start looking for her father for perhaps some answers but got sidetracked and all of that was forgotten. Definitely some loose ends there unless it is addressed in books done the line, which doesn't seem too likely if each book focuses on one of the coven.

This story is woven out of many details of creativity! She literally paints a picture that the mind can then transform with great detail. The characters have a quiet intensity that vibrationally grows and meshes as the story unfolds. Although you don’t understand all the details and how they go together in the beginning by the time the book comes to completion it all makes sense. The downside is the ending. I understand that the author was looking for a way to leave the readers anticipating more but it just lacked Lester for me. There wasn’t a big cliffhanger or a unfolding episode to reel you back in.

Tattoos and more

Not a bad read at all. It pulls you in and you can't stop reading.
Troy goes into a tattoo parlor for a protection tattoo and ends up with so much more.
Ali loves her job and her friends, she has a special skill with her artwork that goes beyond just tatoos.
Go along for a ride with Ali and Troy as they figure out who they really are.

This book is the first in the series but can be read as a stand alone book. It has a very interesting plot with interesting characters. The writing is very good and descriptive. Alix's talent is very interesting and the effects even more so.

Definitely a nice twist on the normal witch stereotypes.

First i've got to say I LOVE the cover! I'm a graphic designer so I'm a bit fussy on those 😉. This one rocks! The book did not disappoint either! I loved it. Great story, great characters who are believable. This is going to turn into one fine series! I like how the romance didn't overtake the book but blended in with the storyline. The baddies are scary and I wouldn't want those coming after me

I think this book COULD have been great but it just felt so rushed. I never got a chance to really care for any of the characters and I never thought anything was ever really explained. It really wasn’t bad, I guess it just felt like I read the sparknotes (is that even a thing these days??) version as opposed to a full length novel.

Inked for life

Wonderful start to what is obviously going to be a great series. Witchcraft, lives in danger, romance and awesome powers - all the ingredients in a great story that flows and reads well. Shame it's not on Kindle (I got my copy from a giveaway). The characters are vivid and real. In many ways this reminds me of the work of Anna Windsor. Wonderful read

I loved this book. The characters were great and the humor had me laughing time and again. The characters were very well developed, easy to relate to, and you felt all the emotions they were feeling. The highs and lows, the triumphs and failures. I am very intrigued with this series and would recommend it as a good read, very quirky, and fun. Laura Dimick

I (obviously) really liked it. This first book is a very good introduction to an interesting and exciting series. I like the concept or the premise of the story, lots of potential for a truly amazing series.

A good quick read

This book feels a bit rushed but it has all the important scenes to keep you reading as time flies by. Not many sex scenes although one of them is graphic.

A great second book in the Coven's Grove Chronicles. Like the first book, magic and romance combine, this time chronicling the story of Hannah, a botanist and a witch meeting Dominic as her life in Coven Grove moves into danger.

I enjoyed this tale of young Alix as she struggles to understand her strange gift and her magnetic attraction to Troy. Lots of action, adventure and sexual attraction happens as the more danger they become entangled in with monsters chasing Alix. A few editing errors took a star off for me, however an enjoyable, interesting read.
