I got more than halfway through this book before losing interest in it. It was recommended to me by my old piano teacher.
Shine is a combined autobiography and self-help book. The author is a famous lawyer, manager, and producer in the music and film industries. His mother instilled her idea of success in him at an early age and he took it to heart, moving to Los Angeles at a young age and quickly working his way onto and up the ladder in the music industry then Hollywood.
The book contains what the author identifies as his keys to success. These keys are similar to what can be found in many other self-help books so you really just have to see if this author and book speak to you right now. The main key to the author's success is what he calls "rage." Rage is basically an unstoppable drive to do or achieve something. Other self-help books usually use similar terms like passion or purpose. As I mentioned, the author's mother instilled in him at a young age a rage to hobnob with celebrities and he took it to heart. I felt like the author just had this rage instilled in him by his mother, kind of like the way Tiger Woods had a rage for golf instilled in him by his father. It didn't seem like the author truly understood how others could find or develop this rage if they didn't already have it. Therefore, I found the book to be of little help to me.

Bunk. Refers to such inspirational success stories as Lou Pearlman, Lance Armstrong, and Joe Paterno. Need I say more? I'm all for the power of a positive mental attitude, but there are countless better books on the subject.
