as usual a much visually pleasing and detailed review of the book can be found on my blog at https://ablogaboutbook.wordpress.com/...

So please do check it out and give any input that you want , positive or negative , it's all welcome

Let me start by saying Thank you to Mr. Barry Finlay and Book Tasters from twitter for allowing me an opportunity to read this book in return of an Honest review . Now here's the Promised Honest Review

This was the first work of Barry Finlay that I ever read and was surprised to later learn of his achievements in his as of yet brief spell as an Author , Mr Finlay has as of the moment of me writing this review has written 3 highly acclaimed books with "A Perilous Question" Being the 4th book , of course I'd like to say that high achievements of an author means nothing when it comes to how good the book you are reading actually is , however this book definitely made me feel that it just might .

Following the story of Human trafficking and the booming yet dark business prevailing in this world the author managed to portray a very morbid scenario that shed light on the corrupt system and poverty that allows some 3rd world country ,such as Tanzania in this book , to become a haven for Human Traffickers . The book managed to detail a very detailed if sometimes disturbing realities of the blackest of the business that feeds on the hopes of young and ambitious .

A Perilous question generates apt amount of sorrow for the aphotic subject but makes the story filled with action and thrills to keep the reader entertained and not be entangled in the disturbing realities of the world we live in .The writing in the book is very smooth and really makes the reading a vivid imaginative experiences as the details and description form easy pictures on your brain. The first arc involving Ms Marcie's misadventures in Tanzania were especially entertaining and gave a real insight on the character of Marcie and some really nice badass moments for her as well.

Barry's lead protagonist Ms . Marcie especially comes out as a respectable character if somewhat fluctuating one at that . Marcie becomes Badass on one arc of the book only to turn naïve and foolish in the other , it was also odd to relate to her sometimes when the gears in her brain were planning on a possible date and flirting with a handsome man after just having witnessed a dead body . Being a guy who always likes to take interest on his character this kind of bummed me out but not enough to put the book down

Barry also sadly didn't spare any pages to create more character depth to some of his sides characters which later led to some pages on the book seem completely irrelevant . There were also one convenient coincidence too many in this book , which of course led to a smooth plot progression but also made it feel a bit odd . The book maintained a good plot pace and it really turned out to be a page turner. The big reveal about the main culprit did came out disappointingly predictable and the final moments of climax also were clichéd

The book has some obvious flaws but in my honest opinion those shouldn't be a major set back for either the reader or the author as the beautifully crafted portrayals and the adventures of the protagonist as well as the quick pacing and the disturbing truth of human trafficking detailed in this book make it a must read and makes this an obvious book recommendation from me

“A PERILOUS QUESTION” ~ "A Masterful Combination of Exhilarating Action and Meaningful Content!
A REVIEW BY LINDA DECOFF ~ 5*****

I found myself enjoying this 2nd thriller/action novel of the very deft and skilled author, Barry Finlay, immensely. From beginning to end, one is held in a captivating series of action scenes that are so well interwoven in content and meaning that the reader easily travels from one scene to the next. You will find this work very hard to put down, as curiosity is piqued from scene to scene. One wants to know what comes next. I was delighted to find that the main characters are a carry-over from award winning author, Finlay’s previous very successful, engaging and intriguing mystery thriller, “The Vanishing Wife”, and can easily see both of these novels as an outstanding series of films, for sure, and hope there will be more novels, continuing the escapades of the very multi-dimensional lead character, Marcie. The novel reads like the best of screen plays, in terms of the flow of dialogue. The very detailed descriptions of each of the characters gives the reader a feeling of knowing them so well.

What is so wonderful about Finlay’s writing is that the action scenes flow out of a natural cause and occur from a source of deep meaning, as the author brings his heroine, Marcie, in touch with a ring of corruption, involved in abduction, human trafficking and international sex trade, an issue that causes our world deep concern and dismay. The author’s knowledgeable explanation of what can and does happen with young girls taken and sent all over the world, helpless once caught in this ruthless business, coupled with creating a heartfelt connection between the lead, Marcie, and a young girl she is compelled to protect and save, gives all the action sequences very good motivation. Yet, even though this is so painful to think about, somehow the author keeps things light and flowing along, as the reader holds on with every breath, in concern for Marcie’s success as she attempts to find the girl and save her.

Not to stop there, the author brings in all kinds of interesting characters along the way, including a very provocative relationship between Marcie, now divorced and wealthy, who has contributed to the founding of the dormitories for homeless girls in Tanzania (where the abduction takes place) and a very handsome FBI agent who soon is brought on the scene. Together the two with the police unravel the mysteries, with him providing all support and she skilled in self defense and relentless commitment to find and save “Shoni”.

Will they ever get together, once this case is solved?
~

This is just terrific reading and you won’t want to put it down. I highly recommend this new book by Barry Finlay, a masterful piece, loaded with poignant information, extremely well drawn characters, with the power to move your heart, and lots and lots of action! I enjoyed reading this book. It's not my usual genre to read but it was a pleasant surprise. The characters were well written. The main character Marcie was a bit predictable and had me (SMH) a lot of times but the story couldn’t progress if she wasn't in this case. It's not a boring read and the story moves along nicely with action. The storyline was different dealing with human trafficking and one person’s drive to help and make a difference. I appreciate that fact that not everyone had a happy ending but it did end well for the most part (a part of real life). Lastly, there were some lessons to learn as well. Definitely worth the read!

For me, A perilous Question was a tightly crafted novel with a powerful identity and an intricately layered plot that was hard to turn away from. I thought the authors characters deftly balanced the story to keep both pace and suspense going to the end. On reflection I thought the author created a powerful lead character whose emotional trials were exciting to follow and I think this is a series that will be very popular.

I really felt I could be in Africa, as I began to read this book. Understanding the general theme of this book created great tension, an expectation of peril that captures the reader. The writing came off very natural and authentic. Well edited, without the continuous stream of typos and the like, found in so many e-books today, it flowed very well. This book, this author has a cause. This is as much social commentary as it is a nicely written novel.
It became clear that there was a previous book to this one. This book stands alone nicely and there is no overstating what happenned in the previous installment. Nicely done.
The first quarter of this book engrossed me. The writing was packed with progression and action, like a well written short story. The book then became more and more about the authors campaign against human trafficking. It went off into police procedure, information on human trafficking and the like. The personal story became more diluted. But the main character’s development grew stronger, keeping you hooked. The main character became more and more annoying. Not in an unatural way. We all have met women like this, who no matter what you tell them, and who know better themselves, just keep doing what they shouldn't.
The mystery of who was behind the evils of this novel also developed well, leaving you guessing until near the end.
There were a few typos near the end, but that is typical for even the best written novels. The wrapping up of the story, bringing all the characters together in a feel good conclusion just didn't do it for me. Perhaps it works for a young adult, but at my age, having seen and read so much, I just skimmed through the conclusion wondering what clues it may hold to a possible future installment.
I give this book five stars because of the quality of the writing, because there are so many poorly edited books these days. Otherwise I would have given it four.

Should have been more difficult to know who led the sex trafficking

I enjoyed reading the book. The romance was clean. Bad language was kept to a minimum. I appreciated both. The author wrote about a serious social injustice that needs to be corrected, but is difficult to do when the hearts of some men continue to be evil. I would have given it a 4.5 if it were an option. I didn't give a 5, only because I figured out who Mr Smith was long before the end and did not have a surprise ending.

The author hit alot of important details in this mystery thriller. Their was alot of drama and suspense, but their was plenty of information on human trafficking and sex trade. Shoni told the truth, not many girls or boys are as lucky as she was. Everything about this book hits very valid influential and emotional points across USA and international borders. Human trafficking and human sex trading is the most disgusting sh*t out their.

This was strangely disappointing. I was preparing for a heart wrenching story, who wouldn't when hunan trafficking is supposed to be the main story? Instead I've got a shallow thriller with a ridiculously unrealistic and stupid protagonist. I guess this authors writing is not my cup of tea.

Perilous Question is the first book I have read written by Barry Finlay, but I must confess that now that I did and totally loved it, I am so going to take a look at his other books. Mystery thriller is not always my thing if not written correctly. Nevertheless, this is not the case with this book. Since the very first page I was captivated by the story. I had no idea who was the girl I was reading about or why did she want to escape so desperately but for some reason I wanted to know so badly who was the girl and what was happening to her. I have to hand it to Mr. Finlay, he knows how to create an atmosphere filled with mystery, enough to ignite the curiosity and detective soul of the reader, and hints of what might be a future romance with our independent, brave, and divorced Marcie and our handsome FBI agent. Our hero and heroines sure got much more than what they bargain for when they enter a world of human trafficking, international sex trade and abduction at the heart of a philanthropic organization in Tanzania. In fact, things don’t look good for Marcie since she provides finding for the girl’s dormitory involved in such crimes. Nevertheless, she will stop at nothing to find protect the girls and, along, with the FBI unravel the truth behind this philanthropic organization and its ties with human traffickers.
I have to admit that dealing with police and detective themes in a book is not always easy because you have to provide enough information to grab the attention of the reader but without giving away who the culprit is, not to obviously at least. Also, you have to picture everything that is going on. Well, is picturing a new world based on reality and, sometimes, that might be harder than just creating a whole new world out of your own. This is why I admire the thriller authors such as Mr. Finlay which can pull off creating a whole new and credible adventure. In no time I was the one following the steps of the girls being trafficked, crying along with them or being desperate enough to risk everything, even my life, to escape from the traffickers.
If you love mystery with a touch of romance and dark themes such as human trafficking in the heart of philanthropic organizations then this is the right book for you.

While the action does not keep you on the edge of your seat, this book reads fairly quickly. It opens with Margie Kane in Tanzania visiting a dormitory style school for girls. Margie is one of the Americans funding the school, so while on a vacation that includes a safari, she decides to stop in at the school. While there, one of the girls asks Margie to take her to America, the perilous question is, “So when are you taking me to America?”
The girl’s name was Shoni and shortly after Margie leaves, Shoni and her friend Irene sneak out of the dormitory and are taken to a house for “processing.” Like so many other young and desperate women, they have now entered into the extremely dangerous world of human trafficking.
Margie learns that they are gone and she attempts to track them down in Tanzania. This is the beginning of a dangerous adventure as well as her introduction to an attractive FBI agent. The adventure continues when Margie returns to her home in Florida, where she also receives help from the local police.
Margie is a divorced, independent and hard-nosed gun-toting woman that will not hesitate to pull out her gun when danger lurks. She also has some martial arts training, so if the circumstances are right, she can hold her own in a hand-to-hand battle. Yet, in many ways she is also naive about the seedy world of massage parlors and prostitution. Margie makes some major mistakes in her efforts to help the girls that have fallen so far and have so little hope.
While there is some physical action, most of the plot revolves around the personal cost of human trafficking and the desperation of the women that willingly take the risk. Margie does what she can as her hard exterior regarding men begins to crack. There is a budding love interest in her life as well, but is a complication that is effectively kept in the background. This book is a good, but not great escapist thriller.

This was the first book I've read from this author. I LOVED his writing. The story immediately drew me into the setting and the life of the main character, Marcie Kane. Marcie is on a vacation in Tanzania, Africa and is visiting a school for girls which she has been supporting. One of the girls asks "When are you taking me to America?". Marcie goes on her way and the girls continue with their schooling. However, that innocent question asked of the wrong person leads to dangerous events. Marcie becomes involved and soon there's an international investigation into human trafficking which leads to her home state of Florida. The action of this book is very well written, it draws you seamlessly from one dangerous event into another. Very well written! The entire story line was so interesting and exciting that it was a difficult book to put down. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is that about midway in the book, Marcie became rather tiring for me. She had been beaten, caught up in gunfire, was recovering from a traumatic shooting from 2 years earlier, had seen people shot before her eyes, had the local detective tell her to stay out of this investigation and to call him, had the FBI tell her it was too dangerous a situation and to call him with information; Yet she still goes off on her own and is caught in more danger, possibly even causing more problems than if she had listened to them. Eventually, she listens somewhat, but that small area was just tiring for me.
Overall, it was a great book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I can't wait to read more of Barry Finley's books.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

This story is full of action and suspense, and was a real page-turner, especially towards the end, when I was absolutely racing through it. I particularly liked the descriptions of the settings, which really made me get a feel for being in Tanzania and Tampa respectively. The author has clearly done his research into people-trafficking. I must admit I did predict one of the twists, but it was still exciting to see whether I had been right, and how it played out.

On the whole, I liked the character of Marcie as she was strong, principled, and interesting - though I agree with other reviewers that for a smart person, she sure did a lot of stupid things - but then again, would there have been much more of a story if she'd just let the police do everything? I would also have liked a bit more backstory on her as I haven't read the other books in the series - a bit more than a hint of what had happened with her friends, and why she wasn't with her husband any more.

I was more accepting of naivety in Shoni because of her age, and I really liked how she was smart, ambitious, and not submissive. I also warmed to secondary characters such as Godfrey and Detective Baker.

This book was, for the most part, well-written, tight, and well-paced. The only criticism I would have of the author's writing style is that some of the conversations were a bit unrealistic, with characters talking at lengths they would be unlikely to in real life, in order to inform the reader rather than the person they were talking to.

Be Careful What You Wish For
I truly enjoyed the author's confident yet easy writing style as I read about two classmates Shoni and Irene. As the talented, Barry Finlay told how these two friends plotted to escape from a charity based school in Tanzania, Africa and the events that followed, I was left guessing what would happen as the story took some unexpected twists and turns. The school that they wanted to was a school where all of the children are locked in their rooms. Supposedly for their protection from men or other threats but in reality it is to keep them locked in with their evil head teacher and prevent them from leaving. Soon after Shoni and Irene escape the horrible school, they find out that the outside world can be just as dangerous as the school when they fall become victims of human trafficking. From its beautiful cover artwork, I expected an impressive story and thanks to exceptional writing, concise editing, and thorough proofreading A Perilous Question did not disappoint. This story would make an interesting movie. P.S. Thank you for sharing the term "monetary lubricant!" LOL

A nice and fluffy page-turner that distracted me from the Polar Vortex outside. Most of the book reads like a Very Special Episode of CSI:SVU, but that's ok if you like crime thrillers. The book starts out with our attractive and plucky heroine vacationing in Tanzania and accidentally getting involved in a human trafficking ring. The story continues back in her home of Tampa, Florida, and a parade of supporting characters right out of Crime Drama Central Casting come along to help. Not that she needs much help as she seems to have a rather mysteriously-acquired set of crime-fighting skills that she frequently uses to get herself out of some rather sticky situations. I enjoyed the pacing of the book and the vivid descriptions of the settings--it is obvious the author has done his homework on locations. There were some fun plot twists that keep the reader guessing throughout the book, and the ending is action-packed. I found it hard to put down as I got into the final third of the story. I look forward to finding out what Marcie Kane will be up to next.
Thank you to Booktasters for allowing me to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

I really liked this story and the characters, especially Shoni. The fight against human trafficking and servitude is so real and I enjoyed this account of a young girl, an advocate and the authorities. I loved how the story started, I wanted Shoni to escape and be safe but I wasn't sure of her goal. It was interesting, thought provoking and I was really wrapped up in wanting to know what was going to happen.
This book was a thriller with some mystery and romance mixed in. I was a bit disappointed in Marcie, she seemed to be a smart, educated woman but she really did some dumb things. I understand that certain things needed to happen to the story but Marcie being so complacent kept me from giving this book 5 stars. I really wanted her to think, plan and use her resources. I found myself (multiple times) saying, "really Marcie?!".
I highly recommend this book, it was captivating and interesting. The author did a great job painting a vivid picture. Now I would like to visit Tanzania!

A Perilous Question
By Barry Finlay

One innocent question asked by a teenager in Africa to an American stranger and the consequences of caring suddenly become an entangled, perilous journey of intrigue, life-threatening danger, and love.
I enjoyed the book and was drawn in immediately with the likable, main character Marcie Kane. I can relate to some of her experiences and why it was so important for her to get involved and try and help the girls Shoni and Irene.
The intrigue grew in intensity with each chapter as complications evolved from each action Marcie took and affected those who tried to help her with finding the girls.
An official visit to the local police station brings about an unexpected connection with an FBI Agent in Tanzania, Africa and the girls Marcie is trying to find. They join their resources together with the vain effort to locate the kidnapped girls.
Excellent Mystery with many unexpected twists and turns that keep you reading for answers!

I was given a free copy of this book in return for an honest review.

I haven't read a crime thriller in such a long time until I read this book! Barry Finlay has made me remember why I love these types of books, because this is a fantastic crime thriller book! This book had such a suspenseful beginning and kept me on edge the entire read. Two girls from Tanzania, Africa ask the main character, Marcie Kane when she will take them to America, setting Marcie on edge and me too, especially when someone agrees to take them! I was completely engrossed in this book and flew through it because I needed to know what happened to the two girls from the start of the story. Marcie became wrapped up in finding the two girls, discovering a human trafficking ring in her home town and got herself into some difficult situations. The story had a great twist and even had a bit of romance thrown in. All in all this book was a great read and it was easy to tell from the writing that Finlay had done his research on this topic. This book really makes you think, because human trafficking can happen anywhere, even in your own home town, just as it did in Marcie Kane's.

This is a good book, and there's no question about that. The characters are well-drawn and believable (well, except I had to stretch a bit for some of Marcie's reckless actions which another character kindly termed, 'naive'). I loved the very humanness of a detective with a bad back and an 'ex' who is 'he who shall not be named'. The locations, particularly in Tanzania, were well drawn. Human trafficking is such a big issue now, especially where it could be happening under your totally unaware nose and, like child abuse, the predator could be the person you least suspect. I enjoyed every second of A Perilous Question', even when I was almost afraid to read on for fear of something I wouldn't like. I received a free copy through Booktasters for an honest review and, I assure you, it's worth the read.

This book is brilliant, a very well written as a writer I was taking on notes while reading it. It drove right to setting and the feel of the story. Marcie Kane. Marcie is on a vacation in Tanzania, Africa and is visiting a school for girls, which she has been supporting. One of the girls asks "When are you taking me to America?". Marcie goes on her way. However, that innocent question asked of the wrong person leads to dangerous events. Marcie becomes involved and soon there's an international investigation into human trafficking which leads to her home state of Florida. I don’t want to say much to spoil the story it’s a good book. Highly recommend it.

I've only recently gotten into thrillers / crime novels and I genuinely think people who have a soft spot for this genre will LOVE this novel.
The entire plot line is so intriguing and captivating that I just could not put it down.
The constant plot twists and turns just kept me on my toes and I fell in love with Marcie Kane and Nathan Harris.
The ending was just lovely and I already want to read everything else involving Marcie and Nathan.
I highly highly recommend!

Solid suspence with a message!

This book is packed with socially relevant themes, absolutely well written and full of suspense and smart turns. Although I sometimes thought: "Oh come on....the main characters are all that perfect and beautiful?" On the other hand...I couldn't wait to read more about Marcie and her stubborness. I both wanted and not wanted her to get herself so hilariously and anoyingly deep in trouble for she is acting for all the right reasons. The author clearly has a mission and high moral standards.
