The Scottish Relic Trilogy #2

Taming the Highlander

Rate this book

This new historical romance from May McGoldrick pits one spirited lass against her biggest challenge a Highland lord who has no desire to lose his heart.

Innes Munro has the ability to "read" a person’s past simply by touching them, but her gift comes with a heavy her freedom. Forced to stay at desolate Castle Girnigoe, Innes never expects to be drawn to the wounded warrior who haunts its dark passages and challenges her at every turn.

Conall Sinclair, the earl of Caithness, carries the scars of battles with the English and the lash marks of their dungeons, but the wounds that fester within give him even greater pain. Isolating himself from his clan and the rest of the world in a tower perched on the wild Scottish coast, Conall is reluctant to let the spirited Innes close to him, however neither can deny the growing passion that ignites with every look, every touch.

But can Conall ever love a woman who can read his darkest secrets and feel the pain he hides... and can love really tame all fears? As dangerous forces close in, Conall and Innes must take the ultimate leap of faith and forge a bond of trust that will save them both...or lose each other forever.

'Taming the Highlander' by May McGoldrick is book two in the "The Scottish Relic Trilogy". This is the story of Innes Munro and Conall Sinclair. I have read book one "Much Ado About Highlanders" but feel this is easily a standalone book.
Innes has come with her family for her sister's wedding. There she meets Conall who has been saved from being a prisoner but is now a recluse because of his time and injuries. But Innes keeps accidentally running into him and Conall is finding Inness were attractive. Innes sister is having immediate trouble with her new husband and talks Innes into staying to help her not be so alone. This gives Innes time to get to know Conall too once he returns back to the castle. Innes hides a secret that she can read people past so she frears Conall won't want her. Conall has the similar feelings that Innes won't want him now that she can see his past.
I loved the first book and this is another great story!

This review was originally posted on Addicted To Romance My Review Updated Summary
Innes Munroe, is "gifted" ever since she was a girl, and touched a family stone and she can feel and hear others thoughts and feelings when touching them. Only a couple of people in the world know of her gifts, because she knows if the truth were to ever come out she would be branded a "witch". When her sister gets married, she travels for the wedding. She runs into a man that she can't resist....Conall Sinclair. A war hero who has his own scars. Conall is the Earl of Caithness and he is content with his "wolf pup" and his solitude. But he can't seem to get the beautiful Innes out of his mind. She is a mystery to him, one that he wants to unravel more than anything. But he soon learns that she will be the one woman to heal the wounds of the past and give him hope once again...
Plot and Story Line
Taming The Highlander, is the second book in the latest series by May McGoldrick. Now its been a while since I have picked this author up, but I have such fond memories of this author, since she was one of the first romance authors I fell in love with and she was the first author I read with highlanders and I just can't get enough of those kilted men now. I had heard quite a few good things about this series, so I knew I had to get it and was granted a ARC copy and so thrilled for the opportunity. Now just opening this book up with the first few chapters reminded me why I fell in love with this author in the first place. She knows how to write highland romances, and I love the mythical tones to this story. The romance between these two is what really got to me here. I just loved seeing them together and seeing the way they slowly fall in love. Its more of a slow and steady romance. I loved the Wolf...he was so cute. He is still a puppy but still tame and he just takes to Innes immediately. He added some fun to the story. There is a more serious tone to the plot though. Innes is living a secret and Conall is a bit of a recluse. We have a bit of matchmaking by Conall's brother and Innes sister acting like their marriage is falling apart---when there are obvious hints that its not true with them sneaking into each others bedrooms at night hehe Then we have a mysterious death that gets solved which surprised me on the real truth behind it. We also see how this series connects with seeing the couple from the first book becoming involved in this one. There is such a sweet and poignant feel to this story with some rich undertones of history and culture that doesn't overshadow the romance!!
I love you, Conall, more than life and eternity and everything that may lay in between

The Cover
Meh!!! This one could have been done better...not a fan of the colors used.

I have attempted to read this writer (or duo) at least 3 times. I always end up with regrets. I love Scotland. I am not kidding. I have a strong affinity and emotional attachment to this place on earth. And I love a novel with a Scottish setting. May McGoldrick writes mostly books in Scotland. I had hoped that I would love their books, which explains why I keep trying.

All their books have a similar bleak feeling with a touch of magic. This book is just that. Hero is the battered earl who refused to take his rightful place as laird out of guilt. Heroine cannot touch people without knowing their most intimate thoughts. A recluse and a spinster, now isn't that romantic.

They have the heroine dressed in black, a spinster who had given up hope on ever marrying. She is such a sad creature. I became depressed reading about her. Our hero is a crybaby. His brother saved him from imprisonment and all he could think about was how bad his life was. I am certain that is not not how the writing duo wanted to portray our lead characters, but that's how they seem to me.

I can live with a little magic in my books. But under the pen of May McGoldrick, the book takes on such a sinister flavor. The book reads more like a gothic novel than romance. Maybe that is what they are going for? If yes, I guess this is not bad at all. For a romance novel, I can only say that it is not my cup of tea.

Taming the Highlander by May McGoldrick is a captivating addition to her mesmerizing Medieval Historical Romance, "The Scottish Relic" Trilogy, Book 2. But can be easily be read as a stand alone. However, I would definitely suggest reading Book 1, "Much Ado About Highlanders", which is another fantastic Scottish Historical Romance. It sets up some background for the rest of this Trilogy. "Taming the Highlander" is set against the backdrop of the Wild Scottish coast.

Conall Sinclair, is the actual earl of Caithness, however, he has turned the reign of his title and his clan to his younger brother. Conall carries the desperation, the hurt, the battle scars, even the lash marks from being in an English dungeon, as a prisoner, after the devastating battle with heavy losses against the English. He carries much guilt.

Innes Munro, has a gift, that could have her charged as a "witch". She has the ability to "read" a person’s past simply by touching them. She also has the second piece of the Scottish Relic others are seaching for and willing to kill, whomever has the Relic. It carries some powerful knowledge, that some would kill to obtain.
Conall finds that Innes calms his inner beast and soothes his tortured soul. He is attracted to her. from the time he meets her, as Innes is to him. She can feel his pain and inner angst. Sparks fly, passion ignites and love blossoms. But can Innes be saved from the man pursuing the Relic holders? Can Innes and Conell find their HEA or will they lose all?
Some of the characters from "Much Ado About Highlanders" re-appear.

A captivating, mesmerizing and intriguing Scottish tale that will have the reader's heart pounding, as they turn pages of "Taming the Highlander.
From the first page to the last and beyond, readers are sure to be captivated with the characters, and the compelling and powerful storyline.
Ms. McGoldrick is a brillant and masterful storyteller. Fans of Scottish myths, Highlanders, intrigue, adventure and romance will be captivated by "Taming the Highlander". Highly recommended! I can't wait to read the finale of "The Scottish Relic" Trilogy. A must read Scottish Romance with a element of the Paranormal! Awesome read!.

I LOVED THIS BOOK - If asked I think I might have liked this one even more than the first book in the series.

I loved Innes and Connall - both as individuals and as a couple.

Connall has a dark past and is wounded in both body and soul - he was captured after the battle of Solway Moss - a battle that cost him his sword hand and the lives of many of his clansmen. He was held by the English for over a year and presumed dead by his clan. He refused to tell the English who he was because he didn't want his clan to pay a ransom for him. When his brother Bryce found out he was still alive - he paid the ransom and brought Connall home. Connall feels immense survivors guilt and refuses to reclaim the title of laird. He is the Earl and has stayed to help rebuild the clans finances - but he keeps to himself and refuses to socialize.

Innes is the sister of Ailein - Bryce's new bride, she is also the holder of part of the tablet and has the ability to see/feel a person's past when she touches their hands with her bare hands. She has given up any hope of a future for herself and also keeps to herself.

When Innes and Connall meet for the first time - the connection between them is electric - they both feel it and they both fight it.

Bryce and Ailein decide to play matchmakers and contrive reasons for Innes to remain with them and for Connall and Innes to be together.

When Connall and Innes finally give into their feelings, Innes feels the need to tell Connall about her "gift". Connall is dismayed by her gift and because he loves her, he avoids her - he doesn't want to condemn her to a life of pain with him.

Heartbroken Innes is ready to give up and leave - but thankfully Ailein and Bryce are even more determined to get these lovers together - There a few laugh out loud moments with Innes trying to get Connall's attention. When she finally corners him and refuses to let him "protect" her from his past - I actually got a little misty eyed. The love between these two is a living thing.

This review is just a brief skim of the plot of this book - this book has so much more - secrets, betrayal, very warm love scenes, soul deep love, life/death moments, a wolf that is in love with Inness and a cameo with Kenna & Alex - not to mention the super nasty villain that is still trying to get all the pieces of the tablet.

You don't have to read the first book to enjoy this book - but to really understand the secret of the tablet and the gifts that the heroines get from them - I would HIGHLY recommend reading Much Ado About Highlanders first.

I am now impatiently awaiting the final installment in this series! To Nikoo & Jim McGoldrick - PLEASE WRITE FASTER!!!

(Scottish Relic Trilogy), Book 2

Bravo! McGoldrick does it again with another extraordinary novel that historical romance readers will absolutely love! Weaving true Scottish history into her new breathtaking-magical-fictional-romance! Even has her hero dealing with PTSD. This is another breathtaking, quick paced, page turning masterpiece of a story! In addition with so many twists, turns, ups and downs on this bumpy ride. I was actually holding onto the edge of my seat, with bated breath and anticipation, not knowing what could possibly happen next! In addition a drool and swoon worthy hero that will makes all lassies hearts skip a beat! A total win/ win in my opinion, one readers of historical romance don't want to miss! For lovers of Scottish historical romance it's a definite must read!

“Taming The Highlander” is book 2, of the magnificent “Scottish Relic Trilogy.” Readers can also read this as a stand alone book. I just personally feel book order is a bit more fun!

The Scottish Relic Trilogy of this sensational “Wheel of Lugh” relic saga continues…

Scotland, 1544, Castle Girnigoe
This heroine of this book is Innes Munro. The daughter of Laird Hector Munro, and older sister of Ailein. Innes, the elder sister, is the one with the relic stone gift. As she can mind read, feel and see what people are thinking and feeling just by using her hands. She basically goes through the same intense experience in her mind, as the person she touches experienced in reality. In addition feeling every raw emotion they felt during the experience as well. Well it is the sixteenth century, so psychics, mediums and anyone with telepathic abilities were often considered being in league with the devil or a witch. Plus accused of being anti- Christian, as in history the church held much power in society as did the crown. Innocent people were often marked as heretics and murdered, if not believers of the same faith. So only Innes’s sister and father know of this gift. They both know her very survival depended on them keeping this quiet and secret as well! As this information could be very dangerous, even deadly If word got out to the wrong type of people.

As the Munros are at Girnigoe Castle for the wedding of their daughter and sister Ailein and Laird Bryce Sinclair. Bryce, was a widow and whose first wife died under mysterious circumstances. The clan needed a rich heiress - due that he had emptied their coffers to pay ransom to free his brother Conall. He is the previous Laird of Girnigoe and the current Earl of Caithness. Conall had been presumed dead and spent the past year in an English ndungeon mistreated and tortured by the English! Bryce and Ailein are also a love match, but get off to a bumpy start why she begs her big sister she adores to lengthen her stay after the wedding.

Conall Sinclair, Earl of Caithness is the hero. He suffers from PTSD in my opinion, of course no diagnosis in the 16th century. As he lives with guilt, remorse and self-crimination plus is plagued with personal demons and nightmares! Feeling he let down his clan losing so many of his clansmen during the Battle of Solway Moss. His clan had thought him dead for months, as he would not reveal his high born status which set the English to continue his torture sessions. Then one obviously betrayed him revealing his true identity to the English to ransom.

Bryce who loved and adored his older brother emptied their coffers, as Bryce would do anything to get Collum back. Another addition to all the guilt and shame he feels. Collum refused to take his title of Laird back, feeling so much self loathing that he didn't deserve it nor want. It is obvious his clan still loves respects and honors him. This only makes him carry more guilt and burdens on his soul. Not to mention losing a hand, plus his guilt, shame and torture he had to endure while in English custody. Plus all his nightmares and day terrors he lives with every day and night! He was all set to put himself in self exile and leave the clan in definitely! That is until one small beautiful new visitor turned his head then things go in a different direction!

His first glimmer of hope is this unique and mysterious elder sister of his new sister-in-law. The one who always wears black and gloves who starts to enchants and dazzles his heart and soul! Stirring feelings inside of him like desire he never felt before or at least not like he did for this unusual woman. Even though he doesn't realise it at first it isn't she the physical either though she is a beauty.Yet she is intelligent, independent, kind, stubborn, and great chess opponent! Plus the only person who seemed to start to open his cold heart feeling things he wasn't sure he wanted to feel. Could this be love? Yet Innes gives him hope for a possible bright future again. Is that even possible for a man like him?

Collum doesn't know Innes’s deepest darkest secret! A secret that could destroy this new found happiness. Innes knows most men couldn't handle this power of her. Some may call a gift but ships definitely feeling as a curse. The burden she has to live with her entire life until death. Innes's met him with her hands accidentally exposed has felt his deepest his route , pain and shame. If the time comes that she confesses her darkest secrets will he feel the same? Or will he feel violated and exposed and abandon her breaking her heart? Will hearts be broken and he become a recluse again. Plus unknown to him their is very evil man and his minions hunting Innes to murder and steal the relic! Is Innes in immediate danger? Will they succeed? Will Collum be able to live with his beloved's demise? Many unanswered questions that I absolutely recommend to read to find out the answers! A total masterpiece of a story that I could not put down,

My favorite character and hero in this book is a four legged wolf named Thunder. A definite scene stealer if you ask me! You will have to read this amazing book to see if you agree? Although I think any animal lover like myself will! I personally love beloved animals in stories!

An emotional, heart-pulling, soul catching, riveting adventure, full of adventure, mystery, intrigue, betrayal, folklore-myths-legends, murder, mayhem, hope, faith and romance! Breathtaking setting, enthralling plots and amazing dialogue that always had me both mesmerized and captivated from start to finish.

May McGoldrick has been one my favorite novelists in Scottish historical romance genre for decades. As they write such powerful, strong, phenomenal, exhilarating, can't put down novels, that I absolutely love! “Taming The Highlander” was no different as I loved this story as I did in book one in “Much Ado About Highlanders!” Yes, also Alexander Macpherson show up in this book too! For all you (Macpherson fans like myself) and his relic power wife Kenna MacKay. I love when the characters from the previous book shows up in the current book. It is kind of like a character reunion for readers!

I now can't wait for “Tempest In The Highlands”coming out 12/6/2016 sadly the last book in this trilogy!

I was given this ARC book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review through netgalley.

Having absolutely loved Much Ado About Highlanders, this NetGalley reviewer was thrilled to be gifted an ARC in exchange for an honest, unbiased review for the next book in this series, Taming the Highlander.

Though both books can be considered stand-alones, because each one focuses on one main couple, you will enjoy/understand the mysterious backdrop involving the stone relic more if you read book 1 first. I’ve included my Goodreads review below to give you a taste of what you will be missing if you don’t. Besides, trust me, you simply won’t want to miss out on Alexander and Kenna’s journey to their HEA.

Innes and Conall take center stage in book 2. She is the eldest sibling of a woman who has been brought to Conall’s castle to marry his younger brother, the laird. Conall turned down the lairdship after being ransomed for a large sum of money when he was severely wounded/taken as prisoner. The guy is actually missing his right hand. Since he was believed to have been killed in battle, his brother not only assumed the role as laird but had to honor Conall’s previous betrothal agreement to a woman who is now deceased. Fortunately, neither men seemed to have been in love with her, so her ghost isn’t haunting their hearts and keeping them from finding their true love. In fact, it is implied she wasn’t a particularly nice person. There were circumstances involving her death though that eventually are explained.

Innes is gifted or cursed, depending how one chooses to look at it, with the ability to read people’s thoughts/feel their emotions/even experience physical pain from their memories by simply touching them. Wearing head to toe black, including gloves, makes her a very mysterious character, indeed. She prefers solitude and to remain in the shadows whenever possible. Her idea of fun is sketching and solitary walks, preferably in moonlight. Conall is pretty much a reclusive himself. Though he still serves important roles for his clan, he is quick to isolate himself, as well. But it is his attraction to Innes that won’t leave his heart, mind, and body alone. His avoidance of her switches to heart-melting determination to convince her to become his bride.

Needless to say, a big reveal is inevitable, and it ends up affecting their relationship. When the bad guy from book 1 shows up, Innes’s life is in danger. With cameo appearances from book 1, there is a violent, dramatic showdown that sets the stage for the final book, Tempest in the Highlands.

Overall, the majority of this book is spent on the romantic connection/journey of the main couple to their HEA. Of course, especially towards the end, Innes’s gift and the evil man who will stop at nothing to possess it become pivotal to the plot. Innes and Conall certainly felt more subdued/introverted than book 1’s boisterous, hard-headed, quick tempered main couple, but they were still heart-melting romantic. I am already looking forward to book 3, Tempest in the Highlands.

Title: Taming the Highlander, Series: The Scottish Relic Trilogy (Book 2), Author: May McGoldrick, Pages: 257, stand-alone but part of a series, HEA, wounded warrior/good guy hero, no cheating, no OW/OM drama, no love triangle, only a couple very steamy scenes, some violence, a random sub-character is found beaten and raped, hero at one point briefly pushes heroine away, Goodreads romance safe read.

Book 1 - Much Ado About Highlanders, Pages: 310, 5/3/16 (Alexander & Kenna)

Book 2 - Taming the Highlander, Pages: 257, 9/6/16 (Innes & Conall)

*I received a copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review*

Excellent book!!! I'm loving this series. The two books in the series so far have been very different in their approach -- one approach isn't better than the other -- they are just different. In the first book (which is wonderful) the hero and heroine were in trouble and being actively pursued by the villain right from the beginning. In that book, we get to know the characters as they are fleeing through the highlands, staying in caves, etc. In this book, we get to know and like the characters before the danger enters the picture. As a matter of fact, the danger in this book is very little and at the end.

While you can read this as a stand-alone book I don't know why in the world you'd want to. The first book really sets the tone and history for the whole series.

This is an ARC, so I hope the prologue will change. Frankly -- I'm not sure how they can call it a prologue. You read the prologue -- then -- the first chapter begins with - "Three Months Earlier" -- I thought prologue meant something that comes before. What I REALLY didn't like about the prologue is that the minute you read it you know exactly what is going to happen in this book -- at least you do if you have read the first book. So -- if the authors or publishers actually read these reviews, I'd suggest they just leave off that prologue!

The series covers the women who are holding pieces of a rune that has been broken into four parts. Each part bestows a different 'gift' on the holder. The power cannot be passed to the next holder until the current holder dies. The gifts include the power to heal (even bringing someone back from the brink of death), the power to see a person's past, the power to predict the future and the power to speak to the spirits of the dead. In book one, "Much Ado About Highlanders", the villain of the series gets possession of the one of the runes. The power he receives is the power to speak to the spirits of the dead. He uses that power to speak to the holder of the rune in order to find out about all of the other runes and holders. Then he heads out on a quest to find the runes and kill the current holders so he can unite ALL of the runes to make a super powerful rune. In the first book, he goes after the holder of the healing rune. In this book, he goes after the holder of the rune that allows the holder to read the past.

The characters in this book are both flawed -- he much more than she. It is the story of Innes and Conall. He was wounded in battle and lost his hand. He was then taken prisoner and held in a dungeon for months and months before his brother found him and ransomed him. He felt guilty for losing the battle and for costing his clan the ransom money. Innes doesn't feel she'll ever marry because she can read the pasts, thoughts, etc. of the people around her and everyone who has sought her hand has been untrustworthy.

My favorite character in the book is Thunder, the wolf. He absolutely steals the whole show.

I went into this book not realizing it was the second book in a series, but I was still able to follow what was going on in this book. I do think this book could be read as a standalone, but I think readers will enjoy this book more if they read the first book before reading this one. That being said, I really enjoyed this book! I thought Taming the Highlander was captivating, funny, original, mysterious, and romantic.

I thought the plot of this book was so interesting. There were elements of magic and mystery. I found those aspects to be really exciting and unique. It was great to have an addictive plot outside the romance. I sometimes find straight romance novels to be boring, but the other plots in this book kept me hooked. I also loved the way the author described the scenery. I felt like I was actually in Scotland, and it was beautiful!

I really liked the two main characters, Innes and Conall. Innes was a loyal and smart woman. I liked how she was a woman who didn't let anyone order her around. Innes was quite stubborn which was a little annoying at times, however, I admired how strong willed she was. Her stubbornness lead to some great banter between her and Conall. Conall was a typical mysterious romantic hero, but I still fell for him. Conall was a dark and damaged man, but he slowly warmed up to Innes. I liked seeing them play off of each other. They had a great love hate relationship. However, when they finally got together, I felt like their declarations of "love" felt a little rushed. I wanted them to be together, but I just felt like everything was rushed once they finally gave into their passions.

Overall, I thought this was an entertaining and romantic read. If you are looking for a historical romance with an addictive mystery, then I would recommend this book to you!

Absolutely delightful historical romance set in Scotland! I loved Conall with and Innes and their story was so much fun to read. The fact that there is only one more book in the series is nice to know since I really REALLY want to find out how this will all be wrapped up and have hopes that the good guys will win and put the evil Englishman away forever.

Innes has a gift that came to her at a very young age. It is the gift of being able to see the past when she touches someone with her bare hand. This is not always a pleasure since some people have less than pleasant thoughts stored away. When she meets Conall and touches him she sees the pain he has endured in battle and as a prisoner of the English but is nevertheless as intrigued by him as he is with her. Staying behind with her sister sets up a courtship that was so much fun to read!

Of course the evil Englishman shows up eventually and causes much trouble…almost lethal trouble…for Innes and Conall. To their aid comes the hero and heroine of book one in the series and it seems the two couples are going to head off together in book three to find the last piece of the mythical relic and put an end to the evil Englishman.

Books in the series:
Much Ado about Highlanders (May 2016)
Taming the Highlander (September 2016)
Tempest in the Highlands (January 2017)

I am eager to read Tempest in the Highlands when it comes out and would like to than NetGalley and Saint Martin’s Press for the ARC of this delightful book given in exchange for my honest review.

"Voleva Innes.

In many ways, this book was kind of silly. Not silly funny, but silly unrealistic. And I don't mean the magic part. The magic really worked here. But it was also super romantic and that makes up for a lot in my book.

The book begins with the heroine, Innes, traveling with her family to her sister's wedding at her (sister's) new home. There she meets Conall Sinclair, her future brother-in-law. She is instantly intrigued but ultimately decides to ignore it. Why? Because Innes has a gift. When she touches someone with her hands, she can see into their minds and therefore their past. This presents a problem of the witch hunting kind. To avoid accidentally invading people's minds and privacy, she wears gloves when around people. At one point, with her gloves off (she was alone, I guess?), she accidentally tumbles down the stairs a bit and is caught by Conall. Because her gloves are off, she gets a look into his mind and sees the terrible things he survived during his time as a prisoner of the English. They are immediately attracted to one another, but both avoid it because of their own personal issues. Conall is still in a terrible place from war, and Innes is hiding her gift. There is more, naturally. Innes gets her power from a stone that is one of four. When all four are combined, the owner is given all four of the powers. Or something like that. Truthfully, I kind of skimmed that part. Not that it wasn't interesting, but it really only ever became an important part of the plot at the very end.

The part I found silly was the aggressive matchmaking by all of the Sinclairs. I get that Innes was described over and over as an odd duck, but I still thought it a bit strange that everyone just accepted that. All of the Sinclairs were determined to get Conall and Innes alone together, including Conall. Her sister was constantly conspiring to keep her there for almost three months. Every week, Innes would decide to leave but would take one look at her sister pouting with her bottom lip out and decide to stay another week. And another week. And a fortnight. At one point I wanted to yell at the book "JUST MOVE IN ALREADY". Did her parents wonder where she was? Each time she said she was going to leave, who was going to escort her? She kept talking about traveling the world, but was she going alone? To America? I was so confused! Did her parents know what she was planning? Wouldn't they object to this? None of that sounds safe! ISN'T THIS A THING? AM I CRAZY?

I could have done without the mystery part of the book. It seemed extraneous and pointless. The supernatural gift/stone storyline of the book was enough of a non-romantic plot point. It didn't ruin the book or anything, but it ended up adding zero to the story.

I absolutely loved Innes as a heroine. I loved her shock of white hair. I loved her refusal to be anything other than herself. And for once, I really believed it. She was always herself. Not just when it was convenient for the plot. I loved her devotion to black dresses and her reason. I loved how smart she was. Conall saw all of this and fell in love. With her. Just as she was. And Conall? Swoon. The two of them were so good together.

The writing was well done. The romance was actually...romantic. They had great chemistry and unlike half of the romance books I read, I could really see why each of them fell in love with each other. What a concept. The misunderstandings were resolved quickly and I liked that Conall decided he wanted Innes pretty early on. He might have had an early case "I'm not worthy", but eventually he got over it. Overall a decent read to pass an afternoon. I'm glad it's a series and I'll happily read the others.

Review copy courtesy of the publisher via NetGalley.

I've only read one other book by this author and it was the first book in this series (The Scottish Relic Trilogy). But from these two books, I'd have to say that May McGoldrick has a new fan!

I really liked Innes. She's got this special ability (courtesy of the aforementioned relic) but I don't think that SHE thinks it's all that great. It certainly isolates her because her ability works through touch. But she was never whiny or angry about it. She just sort of accepted it as part of who she was. One thing I didn't love was that Innes used her ability to benefit herself and her sister whenever suitors would come calling. But now that her sister is newly married, she doesn't want to use her ability to help her sister. After years of using it to see into a man's heart and mind, she doesn't want to help her sister with her new husband? That's kind of a jerk move. BUT, Innes had her reasons and they made sense so I couldn't really be all THAT mad at her.

Conall was really cool. He was a big, handsome brute and I loved him! It also didn't hurt that Conall had a pet wolf. At least, I THINK it was a wolf. That's how it was described and it was HUGE! Maybe it was a wolf hybrid. In any case, Conall and his wolf, Thunder, were a great pair and Innes was no match for their combined charms. Conall was pretty complex on his own though, too. He had been captured and tortured and ransomed and freed... he's had it rough and it has certainly taken a toll on him.

The relationship between Innes and Conall was sweet and fiery. They didn't really get along all that well at first but there was an underlying attraction that was easy to see. I liked them together but I loved the scenes with Innes, Conall, and Thunder the best! LOL! Since this is an historical romance, it should go without saying that the SexyTime was limited until the last third of the book.

I really enjoyed this story and fell in love with the characters. There was a little side mystery going on, which was fun, and the threat that came from Book One that continued here. I don't think that reading Book One is an absolute must but it would make more sense in a couple of scenes where the main characters from Book One show up. My only complaint about this book was that there were times that the story was a bit confusing. There's the main story and characters. Then there is some kind of story/fable that starts each chapter. There is also some kind of flashbacks or inner monologue from a mystery character (it isn't clear who it is until the end). And then there is the inner monologue from the bad guy towards the end of the book. So there was a lot going on but it didn't really affect my enjoyment of the book all that much. I would recommend this book to fans of Scottish Highlander romances that have a touch of mystery and magic!

Powerful magic can be a huge blessing as well as a dangerous curse.

There are 4 stones in Scotland which provide the people who carry those stones with great powers. An English villain has found out about the stones and intends to gather all 4 of the stones. He believes he will become the most powerful man on earth.

So far, he has murdered one man for a stone and stolen the second stone from a young woman. He and his invaders have murdered and created havoc on the quest for power and the search for the final two stones.

Innes is a young woman who has inherited one of the stones from her late mother. Her power allows her to touch a person and see into their minds as well as see their past. It is a huge responsibility to unearth secrets which belong to others. Innes is certain her life will be one of separation from others because people would be too uncomfortable if they knew her secret.

When her sister is betrothed Innes travels to attend the wedding. A new world opens up for both sisters. This branch of the Sinclair clan welcomes them with open arms.

Connall was severely wounded in a battle with the English. He was then captured, tortured and imprisoned. It was nearly a year before his clan found him and were able to ransom him and bring him home. But, it was not before he had lost a hand and become a guilt ridden survivor.

Connall has never discussed his past with anyone.

This is the second in a series. But, it works as a stand alone read. The story is complete. The plot and character development are well done. Any reader will be able to enjoy the story.

Ms McGoldrick has produced a book which brings the reader into the world of historic Scotland. The plot is interesting as well as informative. It is easy to see the difficulties of life.

Character development is very well done. Innes and Connall are each carrying burdens from their past. There is a beginning admiration and it is easy to understand the attraction between two people who feel very alone in the midst of crowds.

The secondary characters are important to the story. The most important secondary character is a wolf who seems to understand every word which he hears.

If you are a reader who enjoys Scottish history with some magic thrown in this is a book you will enjoy.

I received this book from the publisher through NetGalley in the hope I would write a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

I received a free ARC copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest opinion.

This is the second book in a series but is totally a stand alone book, no cliffhangers. I loved the first so I looked forward to this one...and the next also.

Innes is our heroine in this book. She received her "gift" and the piece of relic from her mother when she passed away. Innes gift is that if she touches someone she can experience what has happened to then in their life. This can be a happy feeling but also extremely painful for her so she has taken to wearing gloves.

Her sister is getting married to Laird Bryce and her family has traveled to his keep. Her sister has asked her to stay a bit longer than the rest of the family. Innes then meets Conall, Bryce's older brother. His family thought Conall had been lost in war but later found he was taken prisoner and tortured, then ransomed back to his family. He is angry and full of guilt so he prefers his own company but when he meets Innes it starts to change the way he feels.

When her sister and new husband start seeing the changes in their siblings, they plot to get them together.

Will they succeed and get them together? Can Conall handle her gift? Will the evil looking for the tablet pieces find her as he scours the land?

The relic, a stone tablet, was broken up into 4 pieces many years ago to keep it from someone who could change the world as they knew it if it fell into the wrong hands, evil hands. Such a person has discovered the relic and is looking for the 4 pieces.

Innes has no plans to ever marry. How could she subject others to her "gift"? She is intrigued by Conall and finds she enjoys spending time with him.

Conall is bitter after the war. He is angry at his brother for paying his ransom. He is full of guilt over the death of his countrymen. Innes does nothing but annoy him at first but he starts to find himself more interested in her. She is smart, honest and witty.

They have issues to deal with, like Innes' "gift", his anger and guilt and the evil that is looking for Innes.

I really enjoyed this story and feel like it was a great read! I look forward to more....

Conall Sinclair should be the laird of his clan.
After participating in the Battle of Solway Moss and be presumed dead, when he returned to his clan, broken and without the right hand, he didn't take the direction of the clan of his younger brother, Bryce.
Bryce had lost his wife and was about to marry Ailein, from Munro clan.
Ailein older sister, Innes, was considered a special woman. She was always dressed in black and wearing gloves (which was unusual).
Both Innes as Conall didn't want to get married, but they needed to be together because of the constant argument the new couple was dealing.

Conall was a strong warrior, respected and dark.
Innes was intelligent, kind and had a secret.
She wore gloves because she kept a terrible secret. A curse. The cursed transmitted from her mother to her.
But worst of all was that this curse has made an executioner appeared in Sinclair lands and tried to kill Innes in search of a magical power.
At this point, Connal - and his wolf Thunder - were already in love with Innes, and would do anything to keep her alive and with them.

Interesting plot, with strong and captivating characters.
The story, which has its beginning in the previous book (though each book can be read as stand alone), talks about a separate power in stone pieces and each stone is with a different woman. By joining the 4 pieces, the wrongdoer would have an insuperable power and now, these women need to unite and stop him.
It worth reading the series.

Book 2 of the Scottish Relic Trilogy hits a 5 STAR home run! The authors continue mesmerizing the readers with a solid well written story of intrigue, mysticism, brokenness within families and love.

This fast paced plot deals with Conall being fractured due to war and injury, Innes who can touch no one and of course families trying to heal and create a world where they can all be happy and loved.

The well thought out plot will keep the reader on the edge of their seat wondering if Conall and Innes can find a way to communicate and open themselves to each other. It was interesting seeing the authors fully develop the compassionate love story part of the plot before they brought in the same evil villain, brutal Sir Ralph Evers from Much Ado About Highlanders book #1 of this series. Also, I thoroughly enjoyed the humor that is interwoven in the story with the marriage of Innes's younger sister, Ailein to Bryce, Conall's younger brother. It was amusing watching those two bicker from the moment of their wedding. The readers will be delighted when they discover what all the bickering was about.

I give this 5 STARS for it's compassionate portrayal of Conall and the interjection of some humor to offset the intensity of the love story.

Innes Munro has the gift of being able to see a person's past and what torments them by toughing them. The gift comes at a heavy price. She seeks to lead a quiet life. Her intent is to see her beloved sister married to the man she loves then return to Folais Castle.

Conall Sinclair has suffered in battle. He is scarred in body and spirit. His clan sees him as a wild savage. Conall seeks isolation from war.

Conall is reluctant to let Innes close to him, but she slowly wears him down and he finds that he can look for a future. There is an evil force after Innes and her relic. Will evil win?

While this is the second in a two part series, it stands alone and is a wonderful read from the first chapter to the end. I normally don't read books set in this time period, but I really enjoyed this one.

The characters were amazing. While Innes and Connal are the main characters, Bryce and Ailein played an important part. I loved the loyalty Connal and Bryce showed to each other. Connal was captured and held as a prisoner by the English for a year. He didn't tell them who he was so they didn't send a ransom to his clan and force Bryce to pay it. Bryce never gave up hope that his brother was alive and when he was found alive, he payed the ransom.

There is small sub plot revolving around Bryce's first wife that added a bit of mystery to the novel.

Innes Munro was given a stone with mystical powers from her dying mother. It changed her life. It's a curse to be able to see the truth in every person that she touches skin to skin. Now she's being hunted by an evil man who wants the relic for his own. We'll she be safe among the Sinclairs? Innes has a rebellious spirit. She must keep her secret from all but those closest to her or risk being branded a witch. She knows that no man will want her once he knows the truth. I felt sad for her burden. She's so vibrant and alive. Conall Sinclair is a fierce warrior who suffered imprisonment and torture at the hand of the English. His brother paid a ransom for his return. Now Conall feels that he's a burden to his clan. He avoids society and keeps to himself. Until his wolf, Thunder, brings him to Innes. Their instant attraction pulled me in. I loved their chemistry and their sassy dialogue was amusing. Neither is willing to risk rejection but they can't fight their hearts. I laughed when ConalI asks his younger brother how to woo Innes. I loved this couple and wanted them to get a HEA. I just didn't know how it would happen. May McGoldrick made me laugh, cry and fall in love. The characters are well written and the rugged Highlands provide the perfect setting for this exciting adventure. I'm enjoying The Scottish Relics series. I can't wait to see what happens next.

Great historical read. Innes has been gifted to read a person’s past with a simple touch. She finds it more of a curse and stays hidden and away from people. Conall barely survived the English dungeons now he hides away from everyone else with his pain. I really liked both characters as well as the story. Plenty of drama and suspense and the chemistry is beautiful. I really liked it.

This was a exciting book for all those who like to read a bit of paranormal with their romance. The author writes Scottish historical like nobody business. I have always enjoyed the different story line in each of her books. This one was no exception.
Conall Sinclair is the Earl of Caithness, but he has given the responsibility to his younger brother because of past turmoils. Conall has nightmares from being tortured by the English while being imprisoned. since his release, he cannot cope with the thoughts of death and horror. He just wants to be left alone with his on self and his dog.
Innes Munroe is considered a bit of a witchy woman who can touch others and see their past. She is now come to stay with her sister who married Conall's brother. Innes really doesn't really want to get involved between her sister and her husband.
Conall and Innes become close and see each other with different eyes. They have a connection that will not be denied and love is the key.
There is a madman on the loose who is killing people for a special relic in which Innes has.
Lots of stuff going on in this latest adventure of the Scottish Relic Trilogy that will keep you guessing.
I appreciate Net Galley for this ARC title in which I gave an honest review.

I would like to thank one of St. Martin's Press editor for giving me a chance to read the second book of the Scottish Relic Series. And NetGalley for the making to possible to view it.

This was actually a very good read for me. The prologue was really surprising and how it was connected to the chapter in the book was amazing.

As for the characters, they were really interesting. Half of the time, I do not remember the Conall having an injury. I love how Innes and Conall love started to bloom. It was such a interesting way of showing the readers on how two people tired their best to avoid, but their feeling was too much. The wolf also add another factor in the story. But most of all, it is how Innes' sister and Conall's brother matched the two of them. At the near end of the book. It was nice to hear from the previous book characters. I will not sat anything else, because it will spoil the fun.

Over all, the violence was less in this book. It was more like an after thought rather than being the main thing. Which is good. Since Conall, have already suffered and Innes "gift" is kinda like a curse too. I look forward to reading the last book in the series.

Thank you!

Innes has come with her family to her sister’s - Ailien wedding. Innes meets Connal there who is to be Ailien’s new brother in law . Connal is a recluse keeping to himself and refusing to socialize being battlefield scarred inside and out. Innes keeps running into Connal on accident. Innes stays a little while longer as things are a little shaky between Ailien and her new husband Bruce. Innes has a gift that when she touches people she sees their past and feels their feelings. Innes knows not to share her gift lest she be branded a witch. Connal and Innes have an instant attraction but they don’t feel they will ever fall in love and they both fight the attraction. Connal had been captured after the battle of Solway Moss and held by the English for over a year. The battle had cost Connal his sword hand and many men from his clan. Connal was presumed dead as he wouldn’t tell the English who he was. Connal had survivor's guilt When his brother Bruce found out Connal was alive he paid the ransom and brought Connal back home.
This was a good story and I really liked it. At times I laughed and at times I choked up.I did doubt the love between Connal and Innes but i do feel it showed they at least cared for each other. I loved Wolf the puppy and definitely felt he added to the story. I felt bad for what Conall had went through and all his pain. I liked the plot a lot. I loved the characters and the ins and outs of this story and I recommend.

I'm actually kind of stumped with this one. I love Conell and Innes. Their chemistry is so instantaneous and it feels so real. I can actually believe these characters, and I love how they are both tortured souls but the entire book isn't dedicated to them complaining. I love everything about this book.... almost.

The same as with the first installment in this trilogy, I fell in love with the idea of really dealing with the relics, their powers, yada yada yada; however what I got from this book was a lot of anxiety over people discovering Innes' power, A LOT of sexual frustration and chemistry between Innes and Conell, and just enough about the relic to tease me.

I'm beyond frustrated because now I want to read the last book to see if I'll finally be satisfied in getting to know more about this "ancient relic", which we discovered in this book is only a little more than 50 years old, and finding out if Sir Evers reunites the 4 pieces of the tablet.... also, what does it actually do when combined?
