Lorelei Mathias was born in ‘Metroland’ to English and Romanian parents. She studied English & Philosophy at Birmingham University. She has worked in London as a Copywriter in Publishing and Advertising, and also writes the occasional magazine article, having been a regular blogger for both Campaign Magazine and Caitlin Moran’s website.

Her first novel 'Step on it, Cupid', was published when she was 25, followed by 'Lost for Words'. As a member of the writers collective '26', she has had a poem exhibited at the Museum of Childhood, and a non-fiction chapter published in 'Common Ground: Around Britain in 30 Writers.' Credited as having one of the ‘best youtube trailers for a book, ever’ (well, this was back in 2006 and they didn’t really exist back then), she has also contributed to a number of books and articles about online marketing for authors.

Her latest book 'Break-Up Club' is a romantic comedy about friendship, and was inspired by her experiences in an accidental break-up club of her own... which taught her that a break up shared, is a break up halved. One day she'd like to set up an official refuge for the broken-hearted, so that no one should ever have to go through one alone.

When she's not writing, she enjoys making comedy sketches and short films, running a fictional bakery called Niche Quiche, and asking people where the nearest lido is. She is also named after a mythical German mermaid, which might explain the obsession with outdoor swimming.

Break-Up Club by new to me author Lorelei Mathias offers up a contemporary and fun premise of friends bonding together over their heartbreak and re-entry to the single’s world, but the story failed to deliver the cheeky, fun and commiseration I was expecting. Parts of the story dragged and felt as though it had stalled and came to a complete stop. I liked the characters and kept reading hoping something big was getting ready to happen, but it just never seemed to materialize.

Olivia and Holly reunite many years after college to the news that Olivia has ended her long-term relationship and moved back to London. Nearly overnight on the heels of Olivia’s return, Bella is dumped by her boyfriend and then Holly ends her relationship and Harry catches his fiancée in flagrante delicto. The phrase misery loves company kept coming to mind as it seems these four mates do a continuous spiral over their lost relationships.

I liked the idea of a club where members can help the newly single navigate their way through all the stages of grief and find themselves on the other end, but none of the four really had a clue what they were doing and just basically winging it. There were some cute moments that made me smile but I honestly was disappointed that there weren’t more laugh out loud guffaws.

My Final Verdict: Overall, breaking up is a common and normal phase of relationships and come with varying degrees of the feels. I would have enjoyed this story more if there had been more forward progression of the story and growth in the characters instead of the sense of the same situations on indefinite repeat.

Thank you to the publisher, Harper Collins UK, Avon, who provided an advance reader copy via NetGalley.

Holly and Lawrence. Bella and Sam. Olivia and Ross. Harry and Rachel. One by one the relationships crumble, and Holly finds herself joining a club with Bella, Olivia, and Harry that started out as a joke, but turned out to be a lifeline - the Break-Up Club.

Who better to cry to, to laugh with and to meet every Sunday to support each other to stop wallowing and start living life? You get to see the progress, and regression, of each character in the club as they figure out, not only how to move on from their break ups, but also about their jobs, their friendships, and seeing if they can move on to new relationships.

When I started reading this book, I had a preconceived notion that this was going to be, what I call, a light beach read. People break up. They get lost. They find love. I was pleasantly surprised when there was more depth to the story than I originally thought. There were times when I was reading it, where I thought the story was close to an end, only to have a new storyline spout. And right when I thought a happily ever after was imminent, a huge shocker came to be. I had to turn the pages faster and faster to see how it all would end.

Chick lit fans - you may enjoy this one! For anyone who has wallowed a bit too long after a breakup, or for anyone who has been a supportive shoulder to cry on - this one is for you! I wish I had a BUC after my serious relationship failed. Would have made things a lot easier!

I received this e-book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Ok heads up, I started this book this morning and DID NOT PUT IT DOWN UNTIL I FINISHED. #TheBreakUpClub is actually the best book I have read in A LONG TIME. And I am not easily overwhelmed by books, but legit 6% into the book and I knew I was invested for the day. Keep in mind I have LIFE DEFINING EXAMS in two weeks, and I still couldn't stop. #LoreleiMathias has created an absolute winner here. There is foreshadowing, there is romance, there is descriptive prose and at no point do you actually feel challenged. Which is a good thing. I don't read women's fiction so that I can question the purpose of life. I read it to read about lives that I can relate to, or not relate to but at least understand. This book is beyond excellent and I actually don't think I'll be able to STOP recommending it. This was an advanced copy so I bumped this book to the top of my list to review, as it was released yesterday, May 19th, but SERIOUSLY DON'T DENY YOURSELF SOME DECENT GIRL TIME. And life time, really. Everybody has had a bad breakup, everybody has needed friends and a career change and straight up company, and this book has it all. #GetInvolved #Bibliophile #BookWorm #bookIsTheNewBlack #BlogIsTheNewBlack #ARC #Netgalley - See more at: http://iconosquare.com/p/125450302930...

****Call all chic lit book lovers****
Before starting my love for Indie New Adult romance books I read books by Jane Green, Sophie Kinsella or Emily Giffin. I would slide this book right in with some of my favs. Those authors have wit and books filled with laughs. This book is no different. The layout was a little different but break-ups are universal to understand.
Holly friends go through a break up and they find solace in their new friendships. So much that they start a club. While they tell their stories in the beginning Holly starts to see the flaws in her own relationship and so does her bank account.
I loved this book. For me watching the change in Holly throughout the book made me cry, laugh and want to be her friend. (Oh and want to slap her!) The rules that they set for themselves cracked me up also! Not only do you see the change in Holly but her friends Olivia, Harry and Bella. It shows that there is light after a break up. Everything in this book the reader will nod their head and be able to relate. That’s what made me love it the most. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. By the way this was my first read from this author and it won’t be last. I would’ve loved to have friends like Holly when I was going through break-ups!

I received this book on NetGalley for an Honest review.

Clever, hilarious, and heartwrenching at times. Chock full of relatable characters, it's a very enjoyable read. A very honest look at breakups in our late twenties, the time when our relationships get longer and become particularly heartbreaking when they fail. Doesn't matter if you got dumped or you were the one making the agonizing decision to move on, it hurts.
This book revolves around a group of friends who all happen to go through breakups at the same time. Some are drawn closer by their shared experience having just met. All of the characters are very different but instantly likeable. Having banded together in their difficult times, they form a club to support themselves and each other. Complete with a weekly meeting and rules... don't Facebook stalk! Don't answer when they call! No communication! Drinks lots of booze and make new memories with your friends. My one problem with the book was that their mourning process almost seemed too drawn out and tedious, but that's something that is put into perspective by the end when something truly terrible happens to one of the members. Funny moments (and there are many) in between the heartbreak strike a good balance and make it a well rounded story.
Many thanks to the publisher and Net Galley for allowing me to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Break Up Club is a great, fast-paced tale of four friends who form their own support group, to help each other through their various relationship break ups. We've all been there - crying into our tubs of ice-cream (maybe that's how salted caramel came about?), sniffing jumpers left behind (or is that just me?) and of course these days, with the wonders of modern technology comes the added complication of Facebook stalking. So we rely on our friends to pull us through the misery and anguish.

The characters are great; Holly, whose career is looking like going the same way as her love-life with one disaster after another; Bella, a would-be singer who just cannot get the break she deserves; Olivia, who proves that being the most financially successful of them all doesn't count for a successful love life; and Harry, the loveable Scot who is just as confused and heartbroken as his female friends.

I loved this fun, bittersweet read. The story is full of both laughs and tears as we are taken on their journey, as they find themselves having to create new rules for the Break Up Club along the way. It's written with warmth and love, and makes you realise that we can get through anything if we have our friends by our side.

The Break Up Club is a comedy slash self help slash romance book. It had some very comical areas in it and also had areas where you wanted to sit back and re-evaluate your relationship.

Holly breaks up with her long time boyfriend Lawrence and meets up with Olivia, Harry, and Bella who all come to the agreement they need a club to get over the relationship losses they have all had. They arrange to meet every Sunday and each week they make up a new "rule" to go by. As they do this, each of them goes through a time of self discovery and decides what they each want out of life and love.

Author Lorelei Mathias is a new to me author and this was the first book of hers I have read. Her writing was nicely done and the storyline was well thought out and kept a steady pace. It was written with lots of English slang words mixed in since the author is from England so be aware of that.

This was a 4 star read for me. It was enjoyable and the one-liners written made the book over the top funny.

try this one- it's entertaining. Light and serious at the same time, it leaves you with the positive message that we all need to make and cherish our friends for the tough times. All of the characters are very believable, even if they aren't always likeable, and you won't guess all the outcomes (at least I didn't). I haven't read Mathias before =- I don't think she's been published in the US=- but I'll definitely look for her again. The internet is a wonderful thing! Thanks to NETGALLEY for the ARC.

A story full of break ups, boxes of wine, and Ben & Jerry's !

The story is centered around Holly and her friends who form a group called the "Break up Club". They each try to support one another through their sequential break ups.

A massive thank you to NetGalley and Harper Collins for an advance copy in exchange for a fair and honest review.
I read this book in one sitting because it was light, well written and fun. This is chick lit at its frothiest and is well paced with excellent dialogue and lovable and realistic characters. I definitely recommend this book for anyone who is a fan of women's fiction.

Fearlessly funny, this book was such a pleasure to read I have to give a rare 5 stars. A perfect balance between exaggeration for humour and "I've been there" real-life believability. A modern, British "Friends" with brilliant groansome puns and liberal application of the F-word.

Break-Up Club by Lorelei Mathias is chick-lit Brit style with much laughter (and puns!), tears, inspiration, and drama.

Holly and Lawrence don't have the perfect relationship, in fact, far from it. But he makes her laugh and that must count for something, right? Forget the fact that because of him, her bank account's now at an all-time low or that he doesn't really listen to her when she's trying to run ideas by him for a project they could conceivably work on together or that sex is a vague memory, when they're together, she mostly feels happy--mostly.

Convinced by her best friends, Olivia, Bella, and Harry that her relationship with Lawrence probably ran its course a year or so ago, Holly breaks up with him. Because the four of them have all recently suffered from break-ups, they decide to form the Break-up Club for moral support. As they suffer a variety of set-backs, they cling to each other, the clubs ever shifting and increasing rules, and vast quantities of alcohol.
Although Holly's break up recovery is like a roller coaster, she begins to evaluate her life and determines that some of the things she thought were important perhaps weren't and that some events shouldn't be rushed. Armed with increasing self-awareness, she begins to make satisfying changes in her life.

Break-Up Club is filled with laughs and insights. When Holly, Bella, Olivia, and Harry get together, the dialogue is extremely witty and their antics charming and sometimes manic. The quirky quartet learns how to dance like no one is watching (literally) and reinvent their lives, coming to realize that maybe romantic relationships are just the icing on the cake with the actual cake being the best friends who are better than family.

Despite the fact that it's a novel about love's hardships, Break-Up Club looks beyond the despair of romantic relationships to show that there are more important things and that when you acknowledge that, it makes failed relationships just that much easier to get over.
Break-Up Club, which will be published on May 19, 2016 in the States, was originally published in the UK as Reader, I Dumped Him.

I'm disappointed by how much this book disappointed me. The premise is spot-on, and the reading was somewhat enjoyable, but in the end, it's just not for me.

For one thing, I couldn't connect with the characters. All the members of the Break-Up Club seemed incredibly immature for their age. Most of the book consisted of them getting hammered, taking drugs, and being all-around silly--not exactly what I'd expect from a group of (mostly) professional people in their late twenties. Their interactions with one another seemed even more unhealthy than their previous relationships.

For another, this pacing was slow. As I mentioned above, pretty much every chapter consisted of the characters getting together to get wasted and whine. The only parts of the story I didn't find boring were Holly's short film ideas.

The tone also shifts drastically, going from silly to satirical to serious with little to no warning. The ending didn't seem to fit at all, and I was really disappointed that a certain coupling--which was hinted at quite a bit--never took place.

That being said, there were several clever bits that entertained, and despite not really liking this book overall I am interested in looking for Ms. Mathias' other works. If you're a big fan of chick lit and don't mind the issues I mentioned, I'd give this a go.

It was hard for me to finish this book. I wanted to quit so many times. But in order to give an honest review, I had to make it to the end. I should have quit. The ending was just dumb. So was the beginning and middle. All the characters were immature for their age. They acted more like college students. The main character, Holly was unlikable. She was either drunk, hungover or screwing up at her job. And what kind of person ends a 5 year relationship over skype?
I thought Ms. Mathias tried too hard with the one liners and making it funny. Maybe because I am an American, the dialogue wasn't for me either.

Break-Up Club is a witty book that tells the tale of four friends as they attempt to recover from broken relationships. Their cringe-worthy self-sabotaging actions make for an enjoyable read. Its the perfect book for anyone going through a break-up themselves as it is certain to make you feel better about how you are handling things. I thought the end of the book (last 15% or so) was a bit strange, but that didn't take away from my overall enjoyment.

I received this book free from NetGalley in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion.

Somehow I don't feel I represent the core demographic this book was aimed at! Felt like telling them all to get their acts together, tidy up and eat properly. Oh and stop drinking constantly. No wonder they were constantly obsessing over spots. Recommend reading this if you are under 30!

*3.5 Stars*

Holly. Bella. Olivia. Harry. A four-some I quickly fell in love with.

The best of friends all going through break up *hell* together, so what better idea than to create a 'Break Up Club' to help each other through the pain? Rules are determined and together they support each other through the serious highs (dancing on tables at 3AM) to the deepest of lows. This is a treat of a read if you are a fan of chick-lit and can relate to those 2AM tears.

In my opinion, this was a good 50 or so pages too long. I feel there were quite a few scenes of repeated 'I'm miserable, I want him back' situations which I *get* was part of the drama - but it happened time and time again with the same resolution (getting drunk). Not needed.

Despite that, this was punchy and certainly gave me a giggle here and there!
