About the author

A maths graduate, former computer programmer and erstwhile playgroup leader, Jan Jones writes contemporary romantic comedy, Regency romances, romantic suspense (often with a paranormal twist), cosy quirky mysteries, serials for women's magazines, short stories and poems. She won the RNA’s Joan Hessayon Award in 2005 with her debut novel Stage by Stage which came about through her experience of chaperoning her daughter during a touring production of Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. When in Georgette Heyer territory, she uses her fascination with history to write a series of Newmarket Regencies (The Kydd Inheritance, Fair Deception, Fortunate Wager etc) set 200 years ago in her nearest town. As with all writers, elements of her life also inspire her many short stories for women’s magazines (one of which won the RNA Elizabeth Goudge award in 2002). This could be why she gets funny looks whenever she takes out her notebook during conversations in the bar. Jan organises the annual RNA conference and is firmly of the opinion that the Romantic Novelists' Association is the friendliest, most supportive organisation around.

I missed this book after I'd finished it. I loved the characters, and the sense of place. The pace kept me up late, desperate to know more, and the history and its effect on the modern-day inhabitants of Fairlights was dealt with in a very moving way. The book packs in excitement, tension, romance and atmosphere... a wonderfully satisfying combination!

A cracking old fashioned romantic suspense… I loved this novella. Great characters, lots of tension and intriguing history pulled me rapidly through this story until I was teary-eyed and on the edge of my seat at the end.

Candle to see you safely back home

Loved it. A terrific read. She has always loved the old place and now she'll be able to stay, look after granny and have the business she wants. First however she has to do something about her cousin and his architect. They are interfering with the vision she has for the hotel. But she doesn't understand why the contractor has such a downer on her and why the girl in the village wanted to rip her eyes out. Maybe touching the statue of her most famous ancestor would help. Although the vision that came with it left her weak and vulnerable. As did the news that she and the contactor had fallen in love during one long, hot summer. Why can't she remember? Why does she hate the Pele staircase so much that it weakens her and throws her into a panic attack? What happened that summer? What will happen if she has to overcome her fear? Is she strong enough?

This is an absolutely gorgeous tale. Heart-grippingly tense at the end, but with a beautiful HEA.
