What is adenomyosis?? A lot of people will ask that question when they see the title of this book, and that is the reason it was written. I personally lived with this uterine disorder for seventeen years before I finally received a correct diagnosis after my hysterectomy. Adenomyosis is a disorder of the uterus that causes very heavy menstrual bleeding, painful abdominal cramping (comparable to kidney stone pain or labor pain), prolonged menstrual bleeding (up to two weeks), severe bloating, anemia, headaches, and much, much more. Adenomyosis affects millions of women and dramatically reduces their quality of life. Very little attention has been given to this disorder, and that is why so many people have never heard of it. Even some physicians are not that familiar with it! This book reviews the recent clinical studies on adenomyosis and discusses the current options in diagnosis and treatment while looking ahead to the future in adenomyosis research. In addition, xenoestrogens (dangerous man-made substances that act like estrogen in the body) are discussed in-depth since this disorder has been linked to excess estrogen. Phytoestrogens, herbs, diet, exercise, and even omega-3 fatty acids are all reviewed for their use in helping to reduce the symptoms of adenomyosis. Current ongoing studies are included; however, they are few and far between. Much more attention needs to be given to this uterine disorder to give those who suffer from it some hope for a better life!
I have a B.S. degree in Microbiology with a Chemistry minor from Eastern Kentucky University. In addition, I have a Master's degree in Holistic Nutrition from Clayton College of Natural Health. I worked over twenty years as a laboratory technologist mostly in the field of cytogenetics as a certified cytogenetic technologist. In 2009, I broke my back which suddenly ended my laboratory career due to my inability to work full-time. At that point, I wrote my first book, Maria's Mixes: A How-to Guide on Making Your Own Herbal Teas, at the insistence of some close friends who enjoyed my homemade herbal teas. I enjoyed this so much, that I wrote again....and again,...and again! I have published eight books (three under the name Maria Martin) and am currently working on my ninth. In my spare time, I enjoy wine tasting, theater, concerts, spending time with my friends, and spoiling my little Angel cat :)
This was informative, but I am finishing it with the same options the author had - Tylenol, pills, hysterectomy...so...I am an experiment now with food and supplements.
Five stars simply for the fact that it was written. I had this shitty disease for who knows how long, but I wasn't diagnosed with it until last year. For the almost ten years I went to doctors practically begging them to find out what was wrong with me, I never once heard the word "Adenomyosis" until last year, just before I had a hysterectomy. There is SO MUCH more that needs to be investigated with this disease, because it ruins people's lives. Every doctor who practices OBGYN care should read this book.
This book seemed well researched and documented. It was very informative. I got a little lost in some of the descriptions of xenoestrogens and how certain chemicals and herbs effect various hormones in the body, but it was otherwise a decent introduction to adenomyosis. And, I agree, it seems like more studies need to be done.
