3.5 Everything You Didn't Know You Wanted to Have Stars * * * 1/2 This very clearly had a purpose and I felt it did an excellent job in relaying it to us, the readers.
It is ok to work hard and have goals... to achieve and have dreams... but in the process... make sure you do not lose yourself. See things clearly; people who do not accept you for you are not worth your time or concern... learn to love yourself and others.
These are the life lessons our main characters experience while trying to help others and promote an agenda... they also learn love... powerful, all consuming love and that is a beautiful thing.

I absolutely adored this sweet read from Ashlee Mallory. Her Backup Boyfriend left a big fat happy smile on my face when I was done reading this book. If you are a big fan of a hero, who is family oriented, sweet, kind, generous, sexy and fun then this book is for you. It had all the elements that will keep readers happy and entertained. This heart-warming book was light, fast paced and full of sweetness. Ms. Mallory treated her readers to a lovable characters that you couldn't help but fall in love with. This book reminds us all that its okay to want big things in life but in the process don't lose sight of what's really important. At the end of the day, you should be happy and surrounded by the people who truly loves and accepts you. So if you are looking for a book, that encompasses family values, love, and being happy then Her Backup Boyfriend is a must read.
I recently noticed a new “like” on my review of this book and since I didn’t remember it, went back and read the review and then remembered the book. I liked it the first time so thought I’d do another read though as I’m a big fan of the reread. And I enjoyed it this time too. While I don’t want a lot of those cute little romances on the Hallmark channel, but as I was finishing this book it struck me that it would make for a sweet movie.
I’m always curious when I reread a book if the grade changes, sometimes on second observation I may have been a wee bit too generous In this case, I marked it down by a 1/2 star. I still really enjoyed this book though

4.5 out of 5
I’ve been reading a number of tense emotional reads lately, and enjoying most of them immensely. But sometimes I’m just in a mood for light and fluffy and this book fit the bill just wonderfully well. Kate is quite the uptight focused lawyer who had her life all planned out. She came from nothing and rose above her rather sad childhood to become quite a success. But when the book opens, she’s been dumped by her fellow lawyer boyfriend. He’s a wimp and she’s actually much better without him. He comes from a high class family and Kate just wasn’t good enough for his snooty family. As if that’s not bad enough he’s now engaged to someone else AND his fiancé just happens to work at the same law office. And isn’t that a set-up to make one twitchy.
Kate isn’t satisfied with just being a lawyer in the firm. She wants to make junior partner with hopes of becoming a judge someday. As the book opens, she’s had a crappy day and is in traffic, stuck behind someone going real slow when all she wants is to get home. As she follows the car, he seems to be going the same route she is and much to her disgust, pulls into her neighbours place.
Turns out he’s our hero and nephew to her neighbour. Dominic is exactly my kind of hero, a blue collar hero. He’s helping out at his father’s construction company while his father is laid up but what he really wants to do is go back to school and continue his plans to become an architect. And as it turns out, Kate has recently purchased an old house which needs quite a few repairs and Dom does this kind of thing on the side. Though reluctant, she knows there is chemistry between them but she finds it inconvenient, but she does hire him to do the work. Meanwhile, back at the office, because of a social event she doesn’t want to go to alone, and because of the former boyfriend/now engaged to fellow employee, she makes up a boyfriend.
Due to a series of events, Dom becomes her made up boyfriend and all it entails if she will do some pro bono work for his sister who is going through a bad time. And in typical but nevertheless cute and sweet and very readable way, feeling develop but assumptions are made but boy and girl do get past all hurdles and end up happy.
I loved both Kate and Dom. Kate’s sad and lonely childhood really makes us feel for her. And on the other hand, Dom comes from a very close family and it’s clear he will do anything for family, from giving up his dreams to help his family, to bargaining to be a fake boyfriend. And the fact that he has a strong and sexy Latin vibe going for him, his mother is from Mexico, makes him most appealing.
I also love the author’s voice, very readable, very fun and humorous and I’ve already bought and am currently reading the next book, Her Accidental Husband which is about Dom’s older brother and Kate’s best friend. I very happily recommend this book and this author. The book is just what I needed.
Her backup Boyfriend Date of release Jan 19th I love cute little stories like this.. If you Enjoyed the Proposal with Sandra Bullock this is your book! Kate is a lawyer and was dating her fellow lawyer (Michael)for 3 years but his family was very hoity toity and Kate didn’t come from good stock so he left her. During her recovery time she has focused on being one of the top billable hours lawyer and bought a new old house that is in desperate need of a remodel. While moving her things in she meets her nice if not over excited neighbor Mrs. Sorenson and exhchanges pleansantires. At work it is come to light that Michael has proposed to a girl named Nicole who comes from the right stock and in a panic she tells Micahel she is happy for him and she has met a man. Dominic Sorensen agrees to help Kate fix her house and takes her to Home Depot so she can buy supplies for small repairs and runs into Michael and Nicole as they are buying paint to repaint the bedroom Kate and Michael once shared and Kate blurts out that she is dating Dominic. Dominic goes a long with it and tells Kate he will be her fake boyfriend if he takes his sisters custody battle probono. What happens is that the Sorensen’s all fall in love with her and Kate cant bear to lie to them but then again she never lied her feelings were never as contractual as they should have been. My only question at the end… did they move into Kate’s remodled home or Dominics amazing built from the bottom home? This was the cutest little love story. Squeee No Regrets……``
Her Backup Boyfriend was a pleasant surprise. It was a little slow to start, but I ended up enjoying the book. Kate is working toward a promotion to junior partner at her law firm. She is single and works all the time. Her boss implies that having a significant other will go a long way toward impressing the board. When he neighbor's nephew offers to play her boyfriend for a couple of months in exchange for law work for his sister, she reluctantly agrees.
The romance between Dominic and Kate was sweet. I loved how they really became friends before lovers. They helped each other realize they needed to go for what they wanted and not hold back. Kate learns that what she thought she had always wanted wasn't going to make her truly happy. I liked Dominic a bit more than Kate. I was annoyed at how long it took her to do the ethical thing involving the case she was working on with her firm. It seemed a no-brainer for the type of person she was. I felt like the hesitation was only a way to make more unnecessary tension for the couple.
Dominic's family was a nice addition to the story. They were hysterical. I look forward to reading about his siblings finding love in the future. This is a fairly mild romance in terms of love scenes. They build up then quickly fade to black leaving most of it to the imagination. If you are looking for a cute romance, give this one a shot.
After my recent bad book woes, I was in desperate need of something simple and sweet and that’s exactly what I got with Her Backup Boyfriend. The feels it gave me were just an added bonus.
I really identified with Kate’s social awkwardness and loved how she slowly but surely came out of her shell and gained confidence as the story progressed. Dominic was refreshingly free of douche syndrome and an honest to god gentleman so of course I loved him from the onset. The romance was a warm and tender kind of slow burn, the kind where they supported and accepted each other effortlessly and unconditionally. And since the book features no explicit love scenes, but at the same time was not entirely sexless, it made Dominic and Kate’s emotional connection feel more genuine in a way because they weren’t constantly thinking about boning each other.
I also liked the way work life balance was addressed and how life goals can change or evolve over time. Love Irresistibly by Julie James featured a similar theme and it’s one I’d like to see more often. The scenes featuring Kate interacting with Dominic’s extended family were among my favorites. And book 2 apparently features Kate’s vivacious best friend Payton and Dominic’s stoic older brother Cruz so I am already looking forward to their story and reading more of Ashlee Mallory’s engaging prose.
There are times when I just need a quick and easy romance, and while I had hoped that this book would fit that bill, it didn't quite make that for me.
The first half of the book starts out rather slow, and I really had a hard time caring about the characters at all. Things start to pick up in the second half of the book, but by that point the romance was half ruined for me. I understood wanting to be cautious, but too much caution was not a good thing for this romance. I did like the eventual chemistry between Kate and Dominic, but it wasn't enough to save the book for me.
It is a heart warming romantic novel. Kate and Dominic are both likable. It written in way that keeps readers interested throughout the book. Kate has still not gotten over her ex, who also happens to be her co-worker. When she finds out that he is now engaged to a "perfect" girl who is nothing like Kate, she is feeling quite bad about herself. Dominic is her neighbour's nephew. He is helping her with renvations. But then circumstances made them to struck a deal... pretend to be in love with each other so that Kate can get that promotion she has always wanted and Dominic can get his sister's life sorted out (with Kate's help that is). As always with these kind of stories, things don't go the way they envisioned and soon their lie becomes the truth. Now its up to them to convince themselves that they can make it work....
Typical, short and cute, but I loved how the story is handled. I especially liked Dominique, he was very understanding and quietly supportive. I'd have liked Kate to be a little bit more special though.
I liked several elements, namely the fact the heroine has a job she likes but which proves to be more ethically challenging than she anticipated, had a life journey that I think makes her personality understandable and is faced with a loving family when she agrees to fake date someone. The hero felt less characterized but was still a good guy. However, the pace wasn't always that smooth, some scenes/plot moves felt they weren't really important when there was something else more necessary to happen (in my opinion) and I felt more could have been done to make this a stronger story.
This delightful romance is the story of Kate and Dominic. Kate is on the fast track for legal success, working long hours at her law firm and nursing a bruised heart from a breakup with a fellow lawyer. When her new next door neighbour's fix-it nephew offers help with her home renovations and her dilemma of producing a 'boyfriend' she alluded to to help her professional status in exchange for some legal help for his sister, it seems like a perfect way for her to get her focus back on her legal career and not on the disaster of her new home - at least, it would be if she didn't have thoughts of him getting into her drawers in addition to the house's! Can two people with vastly different life goals design a happy future together?
I really loved this story! Dominic is a hard working, attractive man who has sacrificed his own plans for an architecture degree to help his father and brother with their construction company. He's 100% dedicated to his family and the scenes with them, all likeable and friendly secondary characters give a real warmth to the story. Kate is also hard working, sometimes to excess, in her drive to further her legal career and prove to those around her (and to herself) that she deserves the success that she's made of her life. having come from a low income background. I really enjoyed her character, the witty interactions she and Dominic share, and her slow transformation over the story as she comes to grips with what she really wants for her future. The sexual chemistry between Kate and Dominic is present from their first meeting and fuels their interactions together. Being a Bliss title there are no open door bedroom scenes but the story is told in such a way that I didn't miss them. I found the sexual tension and build up between them to be just as well done as a steamier story. The secondary subplot of a case Kate is working on was interesting and drove the plot and Kate's character development and decisions. From beginning to end I was thoroughly entertained by this story and had trouble putting it down. I hope to see more stories starring some of Dominic's siblings! 5 delightful stars!

A quick read, I read this one straight through in an evening. It's everything I love about Bliss books.
Dominic is a great guy that was hurt in the past. He's not really over it. Kate is coming out of a hard break-up but she's determined to get everything she wants. Partner at the law firm she works at is the number one goal she has. But for that she need the stable home life a strong relationship gives. Working with her ex and his new fiancee makes it difficult to stay focused but Kate is driven to succeed.
Then she meet Dominic. Working on renovations for her house, he see an opportunity for both of them to get what they need and he proposes the pretend relationship.
I adore pretend relationships. It always puts two people together who don't think they're right for each other. Then when they are forced to keep up appearance, the sparks fly. Of course, they resist and that's when the fun begins.
This one just reads well. Things fit and make sense. There's lots of secondary characters that I love and hope to see in upcoming books. It's just enjoyable. Left me smiling. I saw a few things coming but so enjoyed the ride. It's a classic Bliss book. Sweet and satisfying. If you love the Bliss line, you'll want this one. If you love a great romance that has you happy at the end, you'll want this one.
One-Sentence Summary: A hotshot lawyer gets her hot builder to pose as her boyfriend to help her get the much longed for promotion.
Positives: I WANT A DOMINIC IN MY LIFE! Seriously, most swoon-worthy guy I have read about in awhile. He is perfect: good with his hands, a family man, awesome house, says the right things ..... I think I may have to post a wanted ad in my local paper.
Kate herself was a likeable character as well. Even if she was a bit blinded by her ex-boyfriend's charm at the start, she never really saw herself taking him back and I love the journey she went on learning what is really important in life.
Even with the best laid plans......life can throw you a curve ball that changes everything. Kate has her life planned out to the smallest detail yet her breakup with Michael has caused a glitch in her chance for a promotion. Dominic knew what he wanted to do with his life until a family crisis had him veering off his path also. These two meet and she hires him to do renovations on her home. With the challenges they both have ....they set up a new plan to achieve their needed goals. But as with everything else in life you can't always control the play of emotions and love. These two characters work very well together. The supporting characters add an extra layer of depth and humor to an already great story. The chemistry between these two makes you itch with anticipation. A great read that moves at a perfect pace and will have you reading well past your bedtime.
Dominic and his family truly made the book for me, loved them all and I'm hoping we get to see more of them in the future.
Seeing Kate slowly open up and let herself feel worthy was well written, and I really connected with Kate. Loved seeing Kate and Dominic together, they had great chemistry and I had no doubt they were each others happily ever after.
I highly recommend Her Backup Boyfriend, thank you Ashlee Mallory for writing and sharing =)
Thank you to Netgalley and to Entangled Bliss for the advance copy in exchange for my honest thoughts.
Loved! This! Book! It's a great fake boyfriend story that kept me mesmerized. This author has a wonderful fluid writing style that really appeals to me. The characters are well developed and intriguing. Definitely one for the must read list!
Kate is getting pressure at work to settle down. Dominic is getting pressure from his family to get back out there. Just a little white lie could solve both their problems, or perhaps start new ones??
This was a light and fluffy book. I enjoyed the alternating povs written in the third person. The female MC was a bit annoying with how stuck she is on her supposed goals. The chemistry was middling at best. I thought that this probably had enough substance for a novella, not a whole novel. This book was nothing new, but written in a very engaging, readable way.
I’m back on my soapbox again with this one. Twenty years ago when I read a romance novel, I probably wouldn’t have batted an eye about the hero blue collar worker punching a snotty rich lawyer when he acted like a snotty rich lawyer, but these days, I expect better from my male hero, not to mention the stereotype of the “rough” roughing up the rich boy is rather annoying. If I have to have violence in my romance why can’t it be from the snotty rich boy who isn’t getting the girl in the end? So while I enjoyed the characters and the concept of this story, even if I feel like the heroine took a little too long to do the right thing, I just can’t give it more stars. You might enjoy the story if you haven’t developed my intolerance to the unnecessary face punching of assholes, especially at Christmas parties.
A good story of convenience becoming love. I liked the characters a lot. The chemistry between the hero and heroine was great, but it made sense that they were both taking it slow and being cautious. The subplots about their work and homes were enjoyable. I definitely want to read the rest of the series now.
Cute. Different from my usual reads. Female lawyer with far reaching career goals meets construction worker with dreams of a wife and family. Mostly clean romance. The story was a bit too rushed. The side characters were blah. If you’ve ever watched a Hallmark Movie Channel movie, you’ve read this book.
Wow, just loved this book. Oh, Dominic is a great book boyfriend. Loved the moral dilemma for Kate. If you want a story of substance, then this is the one for you. ☺reading 📚!
*3.5* I mean it was okay. It still had some classic things I love about fake dating while also being pretty different in some areas. I didn’t love or dislike it. It did nothing long lasting for me or even pull on my heart strings. Unfortunate but not unexpected.
This was a cute fake relationship story and I couldn't stop listening to it. I loved all the characters and I can't wait to read the rest of the series.
