The Beauty Beneath

Rate this book
Ugly. Freak. Fatty. I had been called those things and more for as long as I could remember. I didn’t mind it, though, because to the outside world, those words described me perfectly. But it was all a charade, a façade to keep people away. Never let anyone get too close. It had worked for twelve years of my life, ever since I caused my father’s death.

And then Carter Anderson pushed his way into my world. Gorgeous, of course, charming, naturally, and cocky, a given—he called himself my friend and broke through every one of my carefully constructed walls.

Cue the “happily ever after,” right? Wrong.

This isn’t some fairy tale where the ugly duckling turns into a beautiful swan, and once the beauty beneath is revealed, all is right in the world. This is real life. When things seem too good to be true, it’s because they usually are. And when people say your past will come back to bite you, they mean it. And trust me, it does.

DC Renee is a contemporary romance fiction author who tends to write stand alone novels that always shock you with a twist. She's been writing all her life. It started with adorable rhyming poems as a kid for anniversary and birthday presents, moved onto monologues and short stories as a teen, then transitioned to fan fictions before she found the courage to publish a book.

DC lives in sunny and (mostly) warm Los Angeles with her husband and their two toddlers - a girl and boy that want to "work just like mama," often climbing in her lap and "writing" on her computer. She's very close with her entire family - extended included, and her sister is her muse.

When she's not working, writing, and spending time with the family, she loves watching mindless TV, tinkering with diy projects, and of course, reading.

By far my favorite DC Renee book to date. This book was perfection. The fact that I haven't even seen the cover just proves that we can't judge a book by its cover because what's inside is what counts ;) I've read plenty of book by D and they just keep getting better and better. I am so excited for all of you to read this! Make sure you add this to your tbr, you don't want to miss out.

Review by Jen Hagen

Guilt transformed me from a beautiful swan to an ugly duckling.

Emerson is 12-years-old when she undergoes a transformation that hides her natural beauty under hideous garments and wigs. A tragic accident is what merits Emerson’s actions and this is her self-appointed punishment – a sentence she has carried out for 12 years. Emerson begins each day with her mother popping in to greet Emerson as Emerson begins her process of covering up her blonde wavy hair and dressing in ill-fitting clothes. Emerson’s mom has begged her to stop this self-tortuous act. Emerson remains persistent in her thought process.

I didn’t deserve to be beautiful. I deserved to be as ugly on the outside as I was on the inside.

One evening Emerson meets the presence of Carter – who initially comes up to Emerson as a bet between his buddies. Carter sees beyond the superficial ugliness and a deep friendship is made. They are so cute together!! They laugh, joke, hang out together, and his friends take an immediate liking to her personality. Something is amiss though…Carter is able to see beyond Emerson’s fashion misfits and into her eyes…the same ones she covers up with large glasses.

“If anyone were to look closely, they’d see the beauty beneath.”

Emerson and Carter each have an obligation to each other – they both have fulfillments that will be called upon in due time. In the meantime all this playfulness they have going on between them is going to make it difficult to say goodbye.

“We weren’t supposed to fall for each other,” I mumbled.
“But I did,” Carter hissed, his words full of anger and hurt. “I fell for you…”

Well now we have a problem because if Emerson doesn’t think she’s worthy of being beautiful then she certainly won’t feel love is in her deck of cards. Carter is very persuasive as he should be as he’s an attorney and when he gets a glimpse of the real Emerson, he wants to get help her live in the here and now. But in the quest for his success, he stumbles upon a horrible fact…one that will knock the wind right out of Emerson’s sails just as it did mine.

“I don’t want to leave you, Em. I want to fight for you, I want to get you to forgive me…”

Surprisingly Emerson found it very easy to forgive Carter – almost cathartic if you will because as she searched for forgiveness she discovered a truth from her past that was never disclosed. Something that I felt strange happening in the prologue truly did have merit. DC Renee always throws a curve ball at the reader and you would think by this time I would learn to catch it! Hopefully next time around…

Okay, it's been awhile and I think I've thoroughly processed what I read. I can't get this story out of my head! I really can't, I rarely read books multiple times but I am diving back into this one! I was BLOWN AWAY! My heart still races when I think about what went down in this story. I love D.C. Renee and all her words but this book, THIS BOOK just topped them all. I was not prepared for this and I don't know if I could have been anyways. Emerson is carrying around so much guilt and self loathing that she makes herself unhappy, why would she deserve happiness after what she did? But really, doesn't everyone deserve a second chance? And the punishment Emerson gives herself surely does not fit the crime, or lack of crime. I was very impressed with the self control she had, she was a strong woman, knew what she needed to do, and did her best to remain alone. That is until Carter walked up to her and made her rethink her entire life. With just a handshake. Really? I know you don't believe me but I'm serious, handshakes can change the world! Okay, so Carter, oh sexy as sin Carter, he knew he could "have" any girl in the world. But what happens when his world collides with Emerson's? It's not what he expects, not what she can handle, and then BOOM! He opens his eyes, but it's too late. She lets him in, after she hears the truth. THIS is what makes the book, this is what crushes your heart, THIS is what stories are made of! Earth shattering cries, heart breaking words, and love. CAN love be enough? What happens when their truths are shown and they find out how fate shows them the beauty beneath?

The Beauty Beneath by D.C. Renee At 12 Emerson experienced a traumatic incident that changed her life. Now at 24 she has achieved a lot for her age but it came as a result of a life of isolation. She has endured years of people being cruel and calling her names. Emerson has kept everyone even her family away from her by making herself look as hideous as she can. She feels her outside appearance should match her feelings inside. It is her penance for what she did. She doesn’t deserve to be happy. One night she is approached by Carter. Carter is a good looking lawyer who can have any woman he wants. Carter and his friends have made a bet about getting a girl and the girl they pick just so happened to be Emerson. When Carter approaches Emerson they both get something neither one expected. Emerson needs a date for her cousin’s wedding and she will help Carter to win the bet if he will go as her boyfriend. This was a story of two people who start out with a bet and end up with much more than they could have ever expected. I truly loved this story and the journey they both went on together. Emerson, Carter and the crew were a hoot and were a total barrel of monkeys. As a reader I got a story that took me on an emotional rollercoaster but at the end I was left with a smile on my face. I was given an Arc of this book for an honest review. I give this story 4.5 stars.

This book had me up until 2 am two nights in a row to finish it. I didn’t want to stop reading. I love how Em was good with comebacks and didn’t let the things people said to her hurt her. She was strong in a sense as well as weak at the same time. Carter was great!!!! The banter between them and the stubbornness is real! I can’t say more without giving anything up but I loved this book!!!

It really does show that it’s what’s on the inside that matters most. One can be “ugly” to you on the outside but the most amazing thing ever on the inside. Just as one can be “beautiful” to you on the outside but their inner self is so horrible.

I really enjoyed this book, the swan turned into an ugly duckling but you could understand why. Carter are a bet with his friends that he could get with a girl for a couple months and they would separate and she wouldn’t get mad, but they picked Emerson one of the ugliest women he has ever seen. Funny thing is the more time they spent together the harder it became for Emerson to be that ugly when Carter only sees the light in her heart.

Another solid read from Renee, a bit of a twist on the Ugly Duckling. I loved the banter and wish there had been a bit more at the end. I enjoyed the secondary characters. I think the extra revelation Em's was a little unnecessary, but I get why it was there. It just took some of the more interesting morally grey out of the situation.

Carter & Emerson are the most unlikely pair, but they are both exactly what the other needs. Their instant witty banter just makes you embrace their friendship. I absolutely loved the way their story progressed and when they love...they both love so fiercely. This was my first book by this author & I must say, I am impressed

This was really good! Honestly shook at how emotional it was but still so good. And to say it barely had any spicy scenes and I still couldn’t put it down. Just wow. This was a great story, and I kinda figured where the plot would go after a certain point, but I loved the ending. Idk it was really and glad I picked this one up at random.

Review:
This is an emotional story where a young woman punishes herself because of a tragic accident that happened when she was a young girl. It is a wonderful story with many surprises. I was captivated from beginning till the end. The plot of the story is about Emerson, a young woman who believes that she caused the death of her father when he was struck by a car during her rebellious teenage years. She hides the natural beauty that she is leading a solitary life as a successful business woman. Carter Anderson is a successful lawyer with a hot playboy mentality who loves them and leaves them. Challenged by his friends to have a relationship with a woman that they choose for two months only to end it and still be friends. Spotting Emerson they select her. Little do Carter’s friends know that Emerson and Carter are pretending to have a relationship. Carter will win his bet. And Emerson will get a date to her cousin's wedding that she is being forced to attend. Fortunately as Emerson and Carter spend time together, they build a friendship that turns into love and desire. Unfortunately unknown circumstances from their past may rip them apart. A wonderful chemistry is shared between these two characters. Good pacing with interesting side stories that kept me involved with the other characters. Emotional ending that I didn’t expect. With strong character development. This story was emotional, but had many funny situations.

~ 5 Love Beneath the Beauty Stars ~

FULL REVIEW Now Posted::
The Beauty Beneath was just an amazing read!! It captured my attention right from the start and kept me intrigued to the very end. I truly believe this is a book everyone should read. The message it sends is such a powerful one.

This book is a standalone novel told in Dual POV by D.C. Renee. This is the second book I have read by her and I loved this one just as much as the first book. Her writing style is amazing. She gives us wonderful characters and such thought provoking storylines. The pace and flow of her stories are spot on. This book will touch on all of your emotions. You will laugh, cry, smile, swoon and yell. This story wasn’t really a suspenseful book, but the author did add in some twists I didn’t see coming. I love when an author can take me by surprise while reading their book.

In this book we follow the journey to healing of Emerson and Carter. This book was a poignant and heartfelt story. I really don’t want to talk about the storyline too much because I think this is a book everyone needs to experience themselves. Just know I loved the journey that D.C. took Carter and Emerson. At first I wasn’t sure I was going to like Carter too much, but boy did he melt my heart. I loved Emerson’s character….she was so broken and determined to live her life behind her shell and not let anyone in. Little did she know that Carter doesn’t take NO for an answer. What happens when, what starts as an arrangement, turns into something more?? What happens when secrets come to light?? Will Carter and Emerson be able to work through anything? Can they each see the beauty that lies beneath the surface?? Read this book to find out.

We also met some secondary characters that I thought were amazing. Beth (Carter’s sister) is the BFF every girl wants. She was so open and welcoming!! I wasn’t sure what to make of Carter’s best friends, just because how they are introduced into the story, you want to hate them, but I was so glad to see that the author took them in a different direction, because in the end I really liked all three of them. I actually hope Beth, and Carter’s friends get their own books!!!

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a book about healing and the underdog coming out on top. If you have ever been judged on your looks or appearance, this is a book I think you should read. I believe it can give people hope :)

This book will stay with me for a long time. This may be my top read of 2016 so far. This book hooked me in and never let go until I was finished. D.C. Renee's writing flows smoothly and takes you on a roller coaster ride of feelings. I could feel Emerson's multitude of emotions warring inside of her. And just when you think you know what's going to happen, wham, a twist knocks you back a few notches.

Meet Emmerson, the girl known as ugly, a freak, a fatty. But that's ok, that's how she wants people to see her. See, when you feel ugly on the inside, that's how you want people to see you right? That's Emmerson's way of thinking. So she puts on a costume every day, so that people will never see the real person underneath. Hiding under wigs, glasses, dark make-up she becomes all those things. She's built her walls so high and thick, no one can get in. Ever since her father's death when she was 12, she has been this way.

Meet Carter, the successful attorney, the man who can haven any girl he wants. The guy who thinks he can even date any girl for a period of time and when breaking things off, there will be no hard feelings. He even makes a bet with his friends he's so sure. When his friends choose Emmerson for the bet, Carter's beside himself, but a bet's a bet. When he walks up to Emmerson, he doesn't know he's met the one person who can knock him back a few steps and put him in his place.

I loved the characters in this book. I loved how witty and strong Emmerson is, even though she's so weak in other areas. I love how Carter and his friends learn a the lesson of a lifetime. I will definitely be checking out D.C. Renee's other books. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this story! I'd give it 10 stars if I could.

12 year old Emerson's life is turned upside down in a way that she starts blaming herself as well as changing who she is inside and out due to the trauma. She also keeps people at arms length, except for her mother, who visits her every morning with the hopes that one day her daughter will forgive herself for what happened years ago and reconsider going back to the lively girl she used to be.
Enter Carter, his buddies and a bet to conquer the ugliest girl at the bar. But once Carter starts getting to know Emerson, he sees pass the ugly front and realizes there's a beautiful woman living beneath all the facade.
Guilt is a powerful force that could leave a person emotionally handicapped, that's exactly what happened to Emerson. After the tragic event 12 years ago she decided she didn't have the right to leave a happy, normal life when she felt responsible for causing so much pain. My heart broke for her, I'm not sure if I could live with so much self-condemnation, nor do I know how would I react if I were to live through something like Emerson did. Her pain was heartfelt, raw, so much weighing on the shoulders of someone so young.
In good DC Renee fashion, Emerson is not the only one harboring a secret. Carter has his own demons, that he's been able to keep at bay somewhat, but when Emerson confesses to him what made her changed her life, lives that were on a path to recovery will be crushed once again, bringing back to the surface all the suffering from the past and broken hearts.
What I like the most about this author's books is the fact that she gives you characters that feel real, characters that the reader can relate too and cheer for when the time is right. And along with great characters, there's always a good storyline that will have you yelling at your e-reader when you can't really believe what you're reading.
This is another great book by DC Renee, one that has a beautiful message about forgiveness. In life not only do we have to forgive ourselves for our past mistakes, but also we need to step out of the box and reconsider others stories, finding in our hearts to forgive their mistakes as well.
Highly recommended!

I have no idea where to begin with this review. First off, any book that makes me cry just by reading the prologue is a winner in my mind. Secondly, any book that makes me cry near the end is also a winner. Thirdly a book that I can relate to so much to the point where I think “has the author been reading my thoughts?” is a 150* book but unfortunately I only have 5 to give. The Beauty Beneath is all that and a whole lot more.

Emmerson Higgins is in hiding. She has been for 12 years and not just from her mum, but from her whole life. After a tragedy occurred, Em blamed herself and so decided to hide her true self away from the world by camouflaging her looks and personality. If she never lets anyone in then how can she possibly get hurt ever again? Until Carter!

Carter Anderson is the ultimate player and he knows it. With his god-like looks and charm he has won over many women for friends with benefits relationships but never anything more as he doesn’t want that. Who would? Then he meets Em and things start to change. Maybe guys and girls can just be friends. Hmmmm??

To say I loved this book would be an understatement. I completely fell for Carter and his wit and can understand how he has charmed many women into his bed (I would soooo be one of them!) but with the alternate POV I began to love Carter and his “girly feelings” because knowing how he truly felt made the man so to speak. He became not just a loveable guy but a swoon worthy man that wasn’t afraid to fight for what he wanted. With Emmerson I related to her so much. Having a similar background to her made me understand her and her feelings on a whole different level than just a reader enjoying a book (hence the crying). Her reasons are some of the things that I myself think and it is very rare I find a book that feels that some of my soul is on the pages. This is the first book of DC Renee’s that I’ve read and due to her excellent writing, I was sucked into the story from the prologue and just didn’t want the book to end. Congratulations on a fantastic book and I can’t wait to read more of your work.

"The beauty of life included having fun, and to me, beauty was dead." ~ Emmerson

D.C. Renee gives her readers a heavy, yet still pretty funny read with The Beauty Beneath. The burb peaked my interest and this was one of those books I couldn't read fast enough to see what was going to happen.

"If you don't let people in, you don't miss them when they're gone." ~ Emerson

It isn't a secret to her mother and the couple of people close enough to Emerson, that she hasn't processed the death of her father yet. It has been twelve years since the day he died and the day the little girl that was his ray of sunshine died along with him. Emerson keeps to herself, only letting her boss, Don, in as well as her mother. While in one of the bars she has a business relationship with, Emerson is introduced to Carter Anderson in the strangest way.

"...Emerson apparently had a kickass story inside. I only got a glimpse of the prologue, and I already wanted to know how the book ended." ~ Carter

I absolutely loved that line and Carter as well. Sure at first he comes off as an arrogant prick, but we slowly learn that Carter isn't happy with who he is and his life up to this point. After a night with his buddies turns into him meeting Emerson, Carter now has something to prove. Starting with being friends with the reclusive girl.

So now we are on this weird back and forth relationship/friendship ride with Carter and Emerson. The witty banter is ten fold between them, which made me instantly like each character. While Emerson's secret feelings are pretty evident by the way she looks on the outside, Carter keeps trying to knock down the walls and see who the real Emerson is.

I liked the storyline, however I was a tad bit irritated with how immature Emerson was at some points. Not letting anybody help her get past her fathers death, instead hiding within herself. The book is well written from dual points of view. Along with Emerson, we meet his buddies as well as his sister to bring the story to life. D.C. Renee did a great job keeping her characters engaging along with the supporting cast from the beginning to the end.

I'm always excited to read an author that's new to me. When that author knocks it out of the park? Even better.
Emerson is a young woman who has changed her appearance to punish herself. It keeps the guilt at bay. She only cared about her looks when she was little. She was her daddy's princess, his sunshine. When a tragic accident takes him away, she blames herself and vows she will always be ugly on the outside to match the inside.
Carter is a successful attorney and notorious playboy. His friends challenge him to date a girl of their choosing for a couple months, dump her, and remain friends with no hard feelings on her part. He never thought they stick him with the ugly fat girl, but hey, a bets a bet. As they get close, they fall into an easy friendship and his friends all like her. Things are great, but they're about to find out just how their pasts were intwined.
I started to love Carter and how he didn't push Emerson. She had secrets she would never tell. Of course he thought her looks were real. He was truly kind to her, it wasn't hard, he loved her attitude. They just clicked as friends and became closer. I really liked some of the excuses he would come up with to spend time with her.
Emerson. You couldn't help but feel every emotion for her. When a young girl thinks she is responsible for her father's death, it takes a huge toll on their life. I could feel her struggle between the need to look as ugly as she felt, and the natural need for friends in her life. She didn't want to let anyone in. She couldn't stand to lose anyone else. How do you get past the hurt and betrayal you feel when secrets are exposed?
This book was amazing. I'm so glad we got to real from both points of view. Some stories that's so important, and this was definitely one of them. It was beautifully written and sent my emotions from one end of the spectrum to the other. As I said, this was my first book from this author and I can't wait to read more from her.

Lets see! What can I say about this story that’s not only about young love but of personal discovery! I can say some of the actions and dialogue between the characters was hysterical!!!!! I can say the story was amazing! I can say the characters were well developed and a great part of the story! I can say that the story was believable! I can say that the author did a great job in creating a visual to suck me into the story! I can say that the author did a wonderful job in creating connections and/or relationships between the characters.

The story seemed pretty light hearted at the beginning and got deeper with each word. Em and Carter are a great match! What happens between these two characters is funny, tear-worthy, and extremely sweet all in one story!!! Yes, I did cry at some point! When I realized just how connected Em and Carter were. Of course, I would never mention why because that would reveal a huge secret!!!!

Carter is a great character. He is a great friend to his buddies. He is a great brother to his sister. He is also great boyfriend material who knew how to get under some one’s skin. He is the kind of person that refused to be ignored whether it be good or bad. He was going to have Chinese food with Em and see a movie whether she liked to or not. It is impossible not to love Carter and his huge personality!!!!!

Em is another great character. She is a kind and funny person. Em proved how protective she could be of people she cared about even she couldn’t admit to the fact. She was not only protective but tough as hell.

I think the combination of Carter and Em is awesome. I truly enjoyed this book. I think it should get 5 stars.

This was a different story and a nice break from what I have been reading. A lot of reality , real emotions and things that happen to others in real life a lot more than we know. The prologue was heartbreaking , after a certain twist was revealed it actually makes so much more sense now about the urgency I felt reading it. The twists were something I should have caught on to but since I was so wrapped up in the story I didn't see them coming until they hit. Carter and Emerson both have pasts they struggle with , neither knowing how their lives would connect and what it would mean for them in the healing process. A great read and a nice lesson.

Emerson suffered a tragedy as a pre-teen , a time that we all know is crucial , the guilt and hate she has felt towards herself has changed her into a shell of herself. While I agree that beauty on the outside should not matter it was sad to see her need to cover up and become the Emerson we know her as. Honestly I loved her regardless. She was witty and funny and although she felt weak and lonely she had a strength to her that I admired. In walks Carter , they meet on a dare and they connect instantly. You can tell by their honesty of the situation that they are going to provide us with some fun. Emerson owns who she is and it doesn't take long for Carter , his friends and sister to fall for the quirky girl in the funky glasses and too big clothes. Emerson and Carter's trip may not goes as they planned but where it ends is a place they didn't expect and I as a reader love !!

The Beauty Beneath tells the story of Emerson, a woman who lost her father when she was a pre-teen. She is now in her early 20s, has gotten through college, has a great job; however, as a result of feeling that her father's death is all her fault - she hides. She hides her natural look. She encourages no friendships. She is alone and feels that is the appropriate "punishment."

Enter Carter, a good looking attorney who meets her while she is on the job. Without giving away a lot of the storyline, suffice it to say that the two become fast friends, and Carter becomes determined to get Emerson out of her shell, no matter what her physical looks are. He likes her and wants her to be happy. Emerson is very resistant to all this.

This was a bit of a different kind of romance, a twist on the "ugly duckling" so to speak. I enjoyed the writing, and I loved the different story line, because we all know in real life, love doesn't always come easily and everyone has their own private battles and demons. In this story, it isn't just Emerson but also Carter.

I found the book hard to put down, and I think I maybe empathized with Carter a bit more than Emerson...I found myself wanting to shake her out of her funk as well.

Good story, great writing, characters you found yourself getting involved with. A nice change of pace if you need to get away from "bubble gum" type romances.

Emerson was the apple of her daddy's eye until that fateful day that changed it all. She blames herself for what happened to her father, she refuses to let anyone get close to her as she thought it was her punishment. Her mother wants Emerson to live life again. While Emerson was at a bar she met Carter and he told her about what he and his friends came up with, she agrees to help him if he helps her. Little did Carter know that he was going to start having feelings for her.

Emerson is the outcast, the ugly duckling. She has walls no one can get through. She has a good paying job, her own place. she is a college graduate and she excelled at school. 24 years old. Carter is a lawyer, he is 28 years old. He is very sure of himself, he comes up with plans to get Emerson and him to spend time together. Dan is Carter's friend, thinks Emerson is cool. Lance is Dan and Carter's friend, thinks Emerson is cool. Erick is Lance, Dan and Carter's friend, thinks Emerson is cool. Beth is Carter's younger sister, she is very ballsy, works in a salon. In a relationship with Matt. Matt is a very rude person. Beth's boyfriend.

This book is very well written and the characters are very well developed. I loved that I was hooked from the first page and that I felt very connected to the characters throughout the whole story. I look forward to reading more books by DC Renee.

This book surprised me!

When I started reading and met all the characters, the story made me feel vaguely nostalgic.

It reminded me of the teen movies in the 90s, where the dorky girl takes off her glasses and is transformed into a supermodel... but thankfully this book was not that.

The story begins with the Emerson, and the explanation of why she became so anti-social and reclusive. At a bar, she meets Carter, because his friends and him had made a bet. From the beginning she called him on his behaviour, and I thought she was the perfect match for his arrogance. She challenged him and their personalities complemented each other.

I liked both characters; both were strong but vulnerable, and I loved how they interacted with each other, the banter between them was great. It was also lovely to see their friendship develop from friends to more. I also liked the secondary characters, especially Carter's sister, Beth.

Both characters had depth, and for me there was a perfect mixture of humour and angst.

Overall, this was a great emotional, funny and sexy read, and I'm definitely going to check out the author's other works.

It was all a charade, a façade to keep people away. Emerson has seen tragedy in her past and because of that she feels that she doesn't deserve to be pretty. She wears a facade to keep everyone away. She doesn't feel that she deserves happiness. Carter meets Emerson when him and his buddies make a bet.

The characters in this book will make you feel all kinds of feels. Emerson really is hiding but she is so witty, sarcastic and funny. However throughout this book you will feel her real pain. Carter is always looking for a good time and will tell you that looks matter. After the bet you see a change in him as he gets to know Emerson and realize that you should get to know a person.

In true DC Renee fashion she throws a WTH twist in there. After you learn this twist all things go to h@!!. It truly brought out so many emotions. I don't want to give anything away but it will break your heart and then put it back together. This book was a great read but it was so emotional in the fact that you really should not judge a book by its cover. It yells loud and clear that you should get to know someone before you judge them.
