After a massive explosion rocks downtown Metropolis, Clark finds himself face-to-face with a white-skinned alien riding a flying motorcycle-and the eyes of the world are all on this so-called Superman! But when Clark’s attempt at reason fails and the bounty hunter reveals some unpleasant truths about Clark’s own alien origin, a brutal showdown begins! Superstar artist Jock reteams with Max Landis for the epic series finale to SUPERMAN: AMERICAN ALIEN!
Max Landis is a Hollywood screenwriter and Eisner Award nominee. Featured as one of Forbes 30 under 30 two consecutive years, Max Landis is an outspoken rising star in the screenwriting world. Having sold over fifteen projects in the last five years, Landis' first produced feature, Chronicle, did well at the box office and led to more sales.
Well, I have to say that I'm a little disappointed by this "epic finale". It didn't feel like an ending, it lacked something. Anyway, he seemed to have finally found away arounf his orgins and all.
”Issue #7” starts with Clark Kent on a subway, text-whining to Jimmy Olsen about Lois Lane. Then something blows up downtown.
Then In his costume (which looks like another home-brew version) he flies over Metropolis and sees a building has been blown up. And he sees Lobo. Superman asks him why he did this.
They talk. Lobo tells Superman that Krypton blew up 500 years ago. Then they fight.
Superman throws Lobo into outer space. The world watches.
Lois visits Clark in the hospital and chastises him for running towards Lobo (as Clark).
That was pretty good. I’m not fan of Lobo, but he makes a good fight for Superman.
The art… bothered me at first, but at the end it was just perfect. I would like an explanation for the home-brew costume though. And maybe what happened to Lobo’s bike?
Anyway, I’m giving it 5 stars. Good Superman stories are rare, so they should be encouraged.
This definitely got the best fight sequence in the whole run, The art was amazing, there wouldn't to much story I would say like the previous issues stuff like dialogue was short, the fight was the main focus but it's concluded everything that been built up keep now pretty decently, every issue is self contained but there do kinda link up with each other, all in all this was a fun one, Max Landis really cooked with this one
Max Landis said he was going to end his American Alien series with "the most violent, realistic fight Superman has ever been in." I think perhaps he oversold it a little bit. In case you forgot, Landis and DC hired different illustrators for each issue. Jock is the name of the illustrator here, and I think some of the fighting was lost in his mediocre, muddled illustrations. In fact, I think the artwork here is one of the worst in the series (just slightly better than issue #2, illustrated by Tommy Lee Edwards). While I mostly get what was happening, there were definitely some panels where the action was hard to grasp.
The story features Clark's first major meeting with another alien, Lobo, a mercenary sent to warn humans that "Earth ain't safe anymore..." The two get in a pretty epic fight, with THOKs and KRAKs and BAMBAMBAMs aplenty. Definitely saw Superman use one of his powers in a way I've never seen before, but as I said some of the action was confusing because of the illustrations.
Bookending the fight is the classic Clark & Lois romance angle. The story starts with Clark on the subway texting Jimmy about his troubles with Lois and it ends with the two of them in the hospital as Clark is healing from his wounds. I like the overall Valkyrie story (Landis has a lot of clever lines in here) and overall the series was very enjoyable. Heard there is an omnibus coming out later this year with some extra content. Can't wait to pick it up!
Perhaps it's unfair, but I expected something a little more epic from this. Introducing Superman to the world at large and having Lois declare her love are undeniably big moments in Clark's life, but this felt like an odd end to a great series. Lobo of all characters was an odd choice for an antagonist and his tone didn't quite fit here. I also like a sharper look than Jock offers so that probably didn't help. Still think this is one of the best Supermen series I've ever encountered, but overall very disappointed that it didn't go out with a bang.

I enjoyed this series a lot, but for a "climactic finale" I found I cared for this issue less than the others. What's stopping Lobo from coming back tomorrow? Ten minutes from now? Was the entirety of the series just to get Lois to like Clark back? This doesn't feel like an adequate end, though I am glad I came along for the ride. I feel the series was much stronger in the middle.

I gave this 3 stars just because of the all around series, but would easily give 2 because it lacka of the thrill a series like this deserves for its finale
