non-stop excitement ... Ryan uses a technique I often don't like - interspersing another story from an earlier time period with the main story ... but this time it was superbly done, and I kept waiting for the next development in both stories ... and then they came together ... and I will tell you no more
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Never Cry Mercy by L.T. Ryan. This story almost mimicked a typical Jack Reacher novel, except that it appears like Jack Noble lost his super powers in this one. Jack has car trouble and lands in a Texas town where everyone knows everyone. During that first night, Jack is approached by the town's bad boy enforcers and almost gets into a fight. He is saved, at the last moment, by a former NYC detective who is now in the witness protection program. Together, they begin work on cleaning up the town, however, the main kingpin is a former black ops operator. His reach is far and there's not much he doesn't know or can find out. He learns the true identity of Jack and of the former detective, and intends to destroy them both.
The story jumps back and forth between current days and 1988 when Jack's sister was raped and murdered. Turns out that Jack's current adversary also knows Jack's father and who was responsible for his sister's death.
Fast reading and highly recommended. I didn't care for the ending - as it's a cliff hanger without closure to the story - yet I ran right out and purchased it anyway. As for the plot, I enjoyed Ryan's earlier stories where he and his clandestine crew worked together on missions.
I started reading the adventures of Jack Noble about 2 months ago. Started slow with Jack and Bear in Iraq. Lot's of character set-up, imagery and past life references. A bit confused but intrigued, I realized I may have read the series out of order, which LT Ryan admits the sequence isn't straightforward. So I backed up, read prequel of Jack and Bear in Marine Boot Camp., then the book from Bear's viewpoint. Went back to book 2 or 3 and I was hooked. The writing in the first several books was slightly clumsy and elementary, but with each book, the writing got better and better. I couldn't predict storylines, characters or anything that happened to Jack Noble by the 5th book. This is a major compliment and I recommend the whole series!! Now, on to Deadpool. (I still don't trust Frank, and Bear needs to come out of hiding).
This episode may actually be my favorite in the series!
The Reader is finally able to piece together Jack's early years ~ years that hardened & molded his mental spirit & physical abilities.
Jack retires from his "work" & travels randomly through the US for several after making sure his daughter is safely whisked away with his brother & family.
While on the road, Jack accidentally stumbles onto a tiny Texas town with dark secrets & reunites with an old friend.
Drugs, sales of illegal arms, intimidation & murder are all carried out under the orders of one man. Once in the town, leaving becomes near impossible & Jack & his ol' friend are both brought to the edge of death.
This really is a page-turner & I thoroughly enjoyed it!
What’s started to look like Jack Noble morphing into Jack Reacher mode, ended up being a great twist of storylines that was spun over the book. The back story of Jack’s sister’s death in their childhood that pushed Jack into figuring out how to use his rage and strengths was very compelling. This was intertwined with his current situation of stumbling on the bad goings on of a small Texas town as Jack is figuring how how he can truly life his life of violence to raise his daughter and lead a normal life. The writing in this book is excellent and each chapter that went back and forth between the storylines was a mini-cliffhanger. Hard to put this good down. The only detracting part of the story was the lack of clarity and a smoother handling of who the bad guys really are and why this seems to fit into a bigger storyline to come. Sure, the bad guys are really bad, it is messy what they really are in the bigger picture. Shame as it does matter for further books.
Jack leaves his family behind and goes on a cross country road trip. By accident or design, he ends up in the small town of Texline, TX. It is here he will unknowingly find closure for his murdered sister, Molly. It is here he will also find Reese McSweeney, ex New York City detective, currently in witness protection. The king pin of the town has more connections than it originally appears. When an old couple that took him in get murdered, all fingers point to Jack, even though everyone knows he didn't do it. As you already know, nobody messes with Jack Noble and comes out on top in the end. Another great read!
Mystery solved. I liked finding out who killed his sister so long ago. Don't like that he and Reese were separated. Jack is a good guy but things never go his way as far as his life is concerned. Now being hooked up with wishy washy Skinner again. Guy can't get a break. I think this book could be read without reading the rest of the series. It's more self contained, self explanatory. Love the series. I hope it has a happy ending. I recommend
Love the series. This one could be read as a stand alone. I was sorry to see that wishy washy Skinner is back. Jack needs a real ally.
Of all the Jack Noble novels, this is the best! That’s saying a lot. I usually tire of reading the same author repeatedly, but L. T. Ryan has got it going on.
Amazon: it would be a wise decision to make this into a video series or movies. This would surpass Jack Reacher and any Mission Impossible Story.
When I finish the series, I’m going to go back and read again. That is not what normally do.
Jack Noble doesn't have a permanent residence. A home. Not since he was a kid. Bad memories, since his sisters death, or rather murder. Ex covert operative. Not anymore. They want him dead. He has lots of enemies. Very lethal ones. Hence, no permanent residence. The highway is his home. His old car breaks down in the middle of nowhere in Texas. An old gentleman gives him a ride into town and let's him stay in his home. Jack has unknowingly walked into a snake pit of old memories, a close friend an the killer of his sister. This is an extremely fast paced thriller. Enjoyed immensely!
Let's start with the narration. I read books 1 and 2 of this series then quit because the narrator was so boring. He read in the same voice the entire book. There was no excitement, no nothing. He never laughed, yelled, whispered, nothing. He made the book truly boring. From books 1 and 2 to this one, #10, he never improved so I'm done for good with this series.
It was about a man who ran the town and Jack had to take care of that.
There was a hint of romance and the F-bomb was used 2 times, which was silly since this was a book filled with bad guys.
As for the narration: Dennis Holland makes the stories he reads sooo boring, I don't care what the other reviewers have to say.
The Jack Noble series is troubling. He wins the fight in the end, in the same manner Rocky Balboa won his boxing matches - by getting beat up, wearing the perpetrators down, and be the last man standing. He doesn't get the girl. EVER! In fact, he has no friends, nobody to trust, and no home. He is a troubling hero. Still, the stories are written well, they have more twists and turns than there are grains of sand on the beach, and I can't help myself from coming back for more!
Jack breaks down in a little town in Texas where he finds Reese. She's in witness protection known here as Billie. There's a lot of corruption and Jack finds himself in the middle of it. He finds that the people running the show are none other than the men that had murdered his sister, Molly, twenty eight years before. Whenever things resolve, Jack is still standing, Molly's killers are dead, Reese has been wisked off by the Feds and he's facing a group of Feds led by Frank Skinner.
It’s a very convoluted plot that doesn’t gel for me. I didn’t like Reese at all. For a tough NYPD detective, she’s tough one moment and then crying the next.
I am not a tough mama, but l’m not a crybaby like her.
Not a nice character build up for her.
And Noble is tough and stupid at the sane time.
The only saving grace is that the death if Molly has been avenged. But Vernon shouldn’t have committed suicide. He should have been punished and jailed for the rest of his worthless life.
Novels o n the drift and happens to breakdown in the town where Detective Sweeney is in Dee Eric protective custody, to much of a coincidence, but anyway the town has secrets an Jack can't stay out of them. He even finds out w hi o killed his sister Molley, another coincidence. But I'm not complaining, the story is tight, fast and pushes Jack to th he ledge. But Jack doesn't fall, he just o pushes everyone else off.
Why can't Jack ever get a break with women. Erin dies, Clarissa tied up with Beck and CIA, then comes along Sweeney AKA ( Billie) and she's ready to go away with Jack and she gers transferred back into witness protection. Jack just can't seem to catch a break in his personal life. Then shot hits the fan in Telline due to know fault of his. Then at the end of things Frank pulls him back in. Great story and plot 10 🌟plus!!!!! Thanks, Carl Clause
Well this book kept me highly engaged with the twists and turns. Just when you think you have it all worked out it suddenly goes in another direction. In this book we see Jack landing in a small town in the middle of nowhere. Someone from his past reappears and some people don't like having Jack in town. What follows is a fast action twisting turning action packed story.
Another well written story that filled in the blanks from past I like to know why, what, where and who. This did that to a large extent. Stories that jump around to different time periods and don’t have a study flow really bother me and have trouble holding my interest.
This is another great, fast-action thriller by a favorite author. The main character, Jack Noble, is always facing danger, as well as his old crime solving partner, and now his family. Great characters here and the story is very well written. It's totally captivating. Highly recommend.
I actually had to stop reading this book at chapter 68. It was just too much 🐂💩 about the amount of beatings and damage Jack sustained. Nobody could bounce back from cracked ribs, being shot even though" it was but a scratch" and the beat downs he absorbed. Sorry hope I don't ruin it for anyone that follows LT and Jack .
I highly recommend this book and enjoyed it very much. It's a fast moving action story you can really bite your teeth into. It left me jonesing for the next Jack Noble book. Luckily for me in have his latest, which I am starting now!!
In this book Jack in his wanderings discovers an old friend in witness protection. He also faces a nightmare from his youth. This book is a combination of a love lost but found, action, betrayal, and vindication.
I found this an enjoyable and entertaining book to read. The mixing together of two story lines added an additional dimension - train tracks that were not quite parallel and that would converge sooner or later
Trouble follows Jack again no matter how innocent a beginning. He finds good people, people afraid to talk and people he knows not to trust. Then teams up with a former acquaintance to finish a town's bad news story.
This was my 10th book in the Jack Noble series. Another fast paced black ops action thriller. The changing mix of characters in each book keeps me coming back for more. Although Jack has become a bit predictable, the storyline often has surprises that keep me from putting the book down.
I didn't want to finish this one as there are no more books in the series after this one I really enjoyed the series and Jack Noble if you like Reacher then Noble will be a good alternative until Reacher's next book. We need more Jack Noble books though!!!!
Good story line. Takes you back to the past as it relates to the present. Gives you Why Jack is Jack. Explains a lot of things about his reasoning of his life.
Love these books!! There’s so much action and suspense it’s hard to put them down. I love Jack Ryder. This is my second time reading this series and it’s just as good this time.
A thriller! An emotional reading! Two breath-stories. Jack’s sister. In danger. And so is Reese. Texline,Texas filled with “bad guys”and Jack has to deal with a very, wry bad guy out of his past. A real thriller.
