There was much to like in this BDSM love story between Cassidy and Mara but it fell short in its mistreatment of the subs who were subject to all the doms not just their mate.
Though my biggest problem with Submitting to the Hellhound was dom Cassidy's treatment of her sub Mara after the huge battle where Mara was attacked. Mara did what she had been ordered to do and telepathically let Cassidy know she was under attack. Then she fought the best she could, not having been trained, and listened to her inner guidance, which was a new concept that came to her in the midst of battle, and put up a good defense tapping into abilities she didn't understand nor was acquainted with.
She fought bravely until the experienced dom fighters showed up and jumped into the battle. During this fight she saved and healed one of those doms. However exhausted and starving, she leapt at that same woman to feed in an insanely uncontrollable fashion to the point that she would've devoured her. Thankfully Mara's dom Cassidy grabbed her and pulled her back in time. You'll have to read the book to understand what all that feeding means.
But the crux of my problem is, Cassidy knowing Mara's state of starvation complicated by being newly born into who she is meaning her need to feed was much greater, she was also exhausted and inexperienced in feeding during battle circumstances nor knew how to control the depth of need to feed when starving, exhausted, and so reved up, did not feed her nor allow her to feed.
Then Cassidy added insult to injury by grounding Mara for a week of isolation from others, told her she'd be disciplined via spanking and there would be no intimacy between them that night though she finally decided they might have sex later for her own benefit.
There wasn't any recognition of Mara's sending the alert of attack, nor of her courage, or of how well she had done. The only thing that mattered was her one serious mistake. The imbalance of respect and understanding between Cassidy and Mara left me reeling and unsatisfied with this book, Submitting to the Hellhound.
As well in this story Mara, who has no choice but to be in a coven and in this relationship, must submit to all the other doms except sexually, avert her eyes and thoughts unless told otherwise by a dom. And though the doms will protect her, train and utilize her, she is not allowed to share her thoughts with or look at another dom unless addressed by a dom and told to look at them. Thus Submitting to the Hellhound left a bad aftertaste of disappointment.
I have read other books by Serenity Snow where she handled the dom sub relationships better so I will continue to read her books for she's a good storyteller.
OMG! From beginning to end this book was well written and I loved the dynamic of the main love interest. Every woman would love to have a Cassidy in their life. She is fierce and the perfect match for Mara. I’ve only read a few books where the relationship type is D/s and it left me intrigued about this world.
I hope there is another book coming because where this left off is causing me some serious angst. For real!
