'Judith' by Janet Whitney, is my all time favourite book. I bought it in 1958 when I was 12 and read it when I was 14 and fell in love with it. Everyone who I have lent this book to has loved it - from professors to actors to teenagers have loved it. It is written by an English Quaker who married an American Quaker and moved to America. Janet Whitney has also written books on John and Abigail Adams and many novels. But Judith is the best. Everyone who reads this books says the same thing 'Why hasn't this book been made into a movie or a television series?' It covers the story of Judith, her fiance, a doctor an envious cousin and devious servant and covers the Irish uprising, the balloon flight and the devastating Yellow Fever epidemic. And a very important green dress. It starts out with a land suit and lawyers and is key to the events that follow.
After over 60 years and hundreds of books read it remains my favourite. My eldest daughter who has a double degree now has it and loves it too.
Janet Payne Whitney (1894-1974) was an English Quaker author. She was the author of at least four biographies: Geraldine S. Cadbury; Elizabeth Fry, Quaker Heroine; John Woolman, American Quaker; and Abigail Adams. She also wrote five novels: Jennifer, Judith, Intrigue in Baltimore, The Quaker Bride, and The Ilex Avenue.
This was such a good book. It is a shame that it is no longer in print (I borrowed an old copy to read it). The characters are very well thought out and consistent, and while they are all flawed, the main couple are very strong. The bad girl was so well written as selfish, manipulative little so and so, that I wanted to jump into the book and give her a good slap across the face. It has been a while since a writer has managed to get such a strong reaction from me. Well done Janet Whitney.
I like the fact that the book isn't just about the pair falling in love, but also them navigating life together amidst great opposition, sickness, a selfish, manipulative little so and so etc.
