However, Gautham, who was love-a-girl-sincerely-then-move-on-to-the-next-and-start-being-sincere-all-over-again kind of guy, proposes Avanthika's good looking close friend, at the age of sixteen, before Avanthika's proposal could reach him. But before she could digest this, he breaks up with her and proposes Avanthika. This poles-apart and not-so-sure-of-anything couple falls into a relationship.

Will they retain the love till they become adults? Can maturity kill their puppy love? Will they move apart with the tide of time?

At the outset, it looks like an average tale of puppy love and ipso facto the factual inaccuracies and some agonizing moments. however in a deeper level... you understand that the author's conversations with the lead pair is the story... a dark story about voices in the head and what not.

Review @ A Bookworm's Musing: http://wp.me/p2J8yh-32A

Ganga Bharani's third book is neither a full fledged romance novel, nor a full fledged young adult novel, but possibly a bit of both. The book brings out realistically, the emotions felt by a teenager when the first crush kind of blossoms into 'puppy love'. Another thing I liked about the book was the 'Author' character, who is penning down the story of Avanthika and Gautham, but the characters of her novel talk to her as she writes. I could relate to that. Though it didn't appeal to me much as I'm not too fond of the genre(s), I feel it will appeal to other readers.

I was eagerly waiting for the book and when I got the book I had my exams.. so finally got the chance to review here.. Thanx to Ganga for giving me a chance to review the book.. I have read 2 books by Ganga and this is one of my favourite one now..why? Because I have fallen in love with the new concept she had introduced in her book : Involvement of author in the story. Want to know more about it? Lets start then:

Cover-The brown color cover with coffee beans is a perfect combo and suits perfectly with the title of the book.

Title- The title is amazing ' A Sip of LOve & A Sip of Coffee', it makes you feel like having coffee and a keenness to read about love. It drifts your mood and makes you feel comfy.

Plot- The plot is simple yet unique as it talks about a teen love, yes that lovey, dovey one, but not so cheesy one. It is about Avanthika and Gautam who are in school and experience a skip of heart while seeing each other, yes that is love. Avanthika is a one man woman, oops sowie* , one man girl, whereas Gautham can't stay with one girl. Both have different notions about love and they stick to it. But soon, they both realise that they are not meant to be together. Gautham don't want to break her heart. What happens next is unexpected but for the betterment of their life. Will they forget each other or stay together forever is the main suspense of the story.

Theme- The theme of LOVE is the key point of the book. The story revolves around Gautham and Avanthika. It is all about those cute times which they spend with each other. This sounds like a cute teenage movie.
The theme of FRIENDSHIP between Srinivas and Avanthika is fantastic. The way Srinivas risk himself in order to help Avanthika is remarkable. Readers would surely wish to have such friends in life.

Diction- Author surpasses the writing technique. The unique concept of writing is enthralling. The way she includes her family and herself in the story, it seems so lively. The interaction with the characters.. I have never had such an out of the world reading. The language is simple and lucid. I could find brevity in it and there was use of simple sentences more than other. It makes the flow of reading easy and makes the reader connected to the chapters. Above all, it is a delight to read this book with a cup of coffee in hand. Not only this, the combination of third person narrative and personal conversation with the authors are the main highlighters of the book. Just, can't get over it. the name of the chapters were simply awestruck.

Favourite lines- " A writer ho writes about terrorism is not a terrorist"
"Every dialogue should not sound like you, but as the characters themselves. My characters are living here in the book; they don't and needn't reflect me."

Author Ganga Bharani’s third novel as per records, but this is her first when it comes to Young Adult fiction/Romance.

The novel’s cover looks enticing and the title is so catchy! It is grab worthy, and any who would cross this book in a book store would definitely pick a copy.

As her friend first, I was skeptical about the genre jump and also, asked her to use a pen name instead. I am not a romance or young adult reader, and so, initially I was not so sure if this was a good try for long.

My take on the book:

First and foremost, Ganga Bharani has tried “Interactive Narration” in this young adult novella, a type of narration that is seldom tried in India so I was first impressed with her idea of using it.

The opening scene starts with the school bell, uniforms, black board, and “No enrolled:” and “No Present:” which drew a smile, as it takes the reader back to the school days. It feels so fresh and underpins the nostalgic thoughts.

The novel has three strong characters, “Avanthika, Gowtham and the author” – their goals in the story were very clear, pure, and emotions were so appropriate. The relationship between the characters looks so appropriate and detailed pretty well! Usually, it is pretty difficult to pen a novel with characters age so young or old when compared to the author’s age, Ganga has done a fair job indeed to think over and ponder about the school days!

Unlike her first two novels, the twists and turns are lesser and there are no heart pounding scenes in the novel given the genre but if her aim was to make her readers smile – I would probably say, she did achieve it.

The pace was pretty good – A crisp one indeed, it just took about two hours to complete. It was sweet and perfumed with innocence, having read many mystery and thrillers in the recent past; this was a very different and refreshing take now, re-reading it yet again. The editor(s) need a special mention as well, a fair job!

The dialogues are the best part of this novel; it makes one grin, chuckle, laugh, and what not. Pretty flowery and naive, this novel has the rawness that is actually required, which makes it a delightful read.

I couldn’t spot any negative factors as such, for a person who reads romance seldom, even to complete this book in a go is a big deal. Overall, I loved the refreshing change! I am still a fan of her thriller novellas than romance (Sounds like my manufacturing defect)

I would rate A sip of coffee and a sip of love fairly a 3.5/5

If you love romance, young adult, and a new take of the narrative – grab a copy!

Ganga Bharani Vasudevan is a blogger turned author, hailing from Chennai. Though I haven’t read her previous books, I picked up this one out of sheer curiosity and the buzz that the book launch created (with popular Tamil director Balaji Mohan releasing the book). A Sip of Love & A Sip of Coffee is a young adult romance novel that stays completely true to its genre. The story made me nostalgic about my own school days. It would surely take you down the memory lane – first crush, infatuation, friendships, exams and all such.

I loved the characters Avanthika and Gautham. Ganga has aptly portrayed their contrasting personalities and how they fall in love with each other despite their differences. However, I felt that their transition from the 5th grade to the 10th grade could have had more scenes. Ganga could have explained their friendship or a few unexpected situations that they might have faced. It would have added depth to the story. Srinivas and Ajitha as Avanthika’s best friends had little to do, though they delivered the necessary impact. At a few places, I felt that the story had only Avanthika and Gautham speaking, interacting and flirting with each other with no other interesting characters, which brought in a few frowns from me. But the author cleverly made up for the glitches with her creative narration. I really, really loved the exchanges between the characters and the author throughout the story. The dialogues were hilarious and engaging to read. They were refreshing, almost a relief, when the plot turned a bit bland.

There were also a few editing mistakes which made this book score two notches lower. The author has to take care of it from her next book, so as to provide a fulfilling reading experience. Since the pace of the story is racy, it makes for a good read during your daily commute. I also liked the climax. It wasn’t a run-of-the-mill ending and was rather realistic. It earned brownie points for the overall story.

Summing up, A Sip of Love & A Sip of Coffee is an enjoyable tale which would take you back to those sweet days of your adolescence. Despite the minor let-downs, it is a breezy quickie that is worth a read!

My take on the book :

When I first came to know about the author Ganga Bharani’s new book, I was bit worried . I loved the author’s previous two books , which are of thriller genres . Her new book is of young adult romance genre . But I still trusted the author’s creativity & went for the book launch . There I met the author in person & bought my self a signed copy of the book .

Cover of the book was lovely . It rightly expressed the name & story of the book . It increased my eagerness to read the book .

The story is about a crush between a girl Avanthika & a boy Gautham belonging to the same school & how the relationship goes . The girl is very serious about love & but the boy is not that serious .

Author uses a unique kind of narration in her story , which is lovely . Here along with the main characters Avanthika & Gautham, now and then the author also joins the conversation, which makes the story very interesting . Dialogues are very humorous & entertaining . The author has taken great efforts in writing the story of two school students , which is not easy considering the very young age of the characters . The story flow was flawless .

It was a refreshing lovely read for a guy like me who loves only thriller books . The author has proved that she can excel in other genres too . People who like romance genre should read this lovely book .

Overall rating : 4/5

Two immature protagonists.
Book does not do justice to its title. Dude, if you're going to give titles such as this, at least write about detailed coffee dates and stuff.
I know a few people found the author's conversations with her protagonists delightful, those just annoyed me.
The author "told" but did not "show" much.
This felt more like a story outline, and not a novel.

Disappointment.

I found this book to be very childish and monotonous.

Yes, okay for a beginner to read, but still the storyline was quite un-interesting and the constant conversation between author and the characters was making it all the more annoying!

P. S. Not recommended for passionate readers

I have'nt read any of Ganga's books before and I picked up this one randomly..or maybe the title was captivating with a beautiful coverage.
This is a cute love story..takes you back to those good old schooldays..This book is all about teenage crush, friends, secret phone calls, exams.Very Nostalgic..
What I love about the book is the interactive narration.. how the author and the characters of the story interact..those conversations gives you a chuckle.
The pace of the story was good..The plot, dialogues, though appeared filmy, the end goes very realistic-the puppy love turning into a matured relationship..
