Still Alice by Lisa Genova is a moving exploration of identity and loss, centering on Alice Howland, a brilliant Harvard professor diagnosed with Early-Onset Alzheimer’s at age 50. The book meticulously tracks her journey from the first signs of forgetfulness to a near-total loss of her cognitive faculties, forcing a woman who lived for her mind to confront a life without it. Through Alice’s perspective, the reader witnesses the shifting dynamics of her family as they grapple with her diagnosis, highlighting the tension between career ambitions and the duties of caregiving. A key conflict arises from Alice’s desperate attempt to maintain her dignity, including a secret plan to end her life before she becomes a "stranger" to herself. Ultimately, the novel serves as a powerful testament to the human spirit, suggesting that even when the intellect fades, the capacity to give and receive love survives
The story follows Alice Howland, a 50-year-old Harvard professor of cognitive psychology at the height of her career who starts to forget. She starts to forget words while presenting lectures, forgets her running route, gets lost, and she starts to forget people’s names. The author puts you in Alice’s mind and I don’t think I’ve cried like this from a book in a long time. It’s an amazing book about early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.
