It should have been an open-and-shut case. When a car bomb explodes, taking with it the wife of a prominent heart surgeon, NYPD detective Maxine Turner is sure she has arrested the right suspect―until Cory Rossini, a private investigator, begins muddying the waters. Max already has enough to deal her longtime partner is retiring, her latest case is suddenly anything but simple, and she now has a troubling attraction to a man who is proving to be annoyingly persistent. Having taken on the task of proving his friend’s innocence, Cory isn’t about to drop the ball―no matter how distractingly beautiful he finds the detective assigned to the investigation. When his sleuthing turns up other homicides connected to the cardiology department, including a young woman whose throat has been slit, he convinces Max that they should work together. And as they delve further into the vicious murders, they search for the one lead that will steer them straight to a killer…
This is the first book I read for the author (K. T. Roberts) and I am impressed with her way of writing, the complexity of the story yet how it is easy to grasp and fun to read. Looking forward to read her other books too. This is not a fully suspense/thriller book. It falls under suspense/romance as there is a romantic side to the story as well. I have not read many books in this genre and usually most of them tend to sound corny but not this one.
The whole story revolves around a NYPD detective Max Turner who is investigating a murder case of a woman. Both the husband of the deceased and her lover are suspects. Max has to find out who is the killer. Things get much more complicated when one of them is accused and there will be lots of twists and turns in the story until the full truth is revealed at the end.
I would definitely recommend this book as I enjoyed it a lot. Note: I have won a free copy of this book by participating in a giveaway.
If you're a fan of Law & Order and like a dash of romance, you better put this on your TBR list NOW!
The story starts off with Maxine (Max) Turner an NYPT detective investigating the murder of a prominent heart surgeon's wife. However, what she thought was an open and shut case, turns out to be much more sinister involving corrupt decisions leading to more and more deadly consequences by the end. This book had a lot of great twists and some aspects in it that pleasantly surprised me. (Always a bonus when reading suspense!) Plus, I enjoyed the sweet romance between Max and Cory, the private investigator whom she ends up working together with. The way the ending wrapped up was lovely and even tugged a few heartstrings. Highly recommend. I was given an ARC for an honest review and look forward to reading more by this author.
Cory Rossini is a lawyer on a temporary suspension and private investigator. One of his childhood friends has been arrested for the murder of his married lover. Maxine "Max" Turner is a homicide detective and out to find out who caused Helen Barrett's death. The police and private investigations uncover more questions than answers and put Cory and Max at odds with one another even though there is mutual attraction and admiration between them. I found Blind Retribution to be a fast-paced and rather enjoyable read. The story includes marital infidelity, plenty of suspense and intrigue, hospital ethical issues, murder, and romance. This is the first book I've read by Ms. Roberts and I look forward to reading more from her in the future.
Blind Retribution couldn't seem to figure out what type of book it wanted to be. Crime, Cop book, Romantic suspense (I didn't read anything suspenseful) Mystery with slight romance where the leads are not really connected. I just couldn't connect with this book and struggled with Max and Cory.
K.T. Roberts wrote Cory and Max as if the characters were feeling this unbelievable connection but while I read the book I didn't get that feeling. Instead it felt disconnected at times and awkward at best. Cory talks without thinking first sweet words of romance and Max being hard core cop seem to eat up the words but than question them the next. It just felt disconnected at the best of times.
I found myself speed reading the last 55% of the book just wanting to figure out the killer hoping maybe there would be a last minute twist but instead its is what the reader expected.
The entire story felt disconnected, lack of emotions and boring at times. I finished the book after 3 days of struggling though it.
Sex and Violence fit the book are not graphic in fact I would call it simple, fast and done.
Advance Copy from netgalley for my honest thoughts.
Loved Max and Corey's story. The complexity of the crimes and the many possible guilty parties made for an outstanding suspense. And the chemistry between those two was electric! All around great story.
I do not normally read romantic suspense/murder mysteries, but I am really, really glad that I gave this a chance because this book was great. If you enjoy a story with murder, suspense, a sweet romance between to likable characters, and a plethora of emotions, this one is a must-read.
The Author's Notes of this novel are INCREDIBLY important, so if you don't normally read them when you're done with a book, please take the time to do so this time. I don't want to spoil such a big plot point, but what K.T. Roberts talks about in her notes is so important in real life and with regards to the book that they should definitely be read.
Possible slight spoilers below but the big bad and important plot twists ARE NOT spoiled.
Max was such a great character, she was feisty, strong, smart, and confident in her job. I loved her confidence and competence because it meant that there were no conflicts about her being a female detective, she just did her job, did it well, and everyone just respected her for that. She didn't feel the need to be a hard ass or to prove herself to anyone, she just went out and did her job. Even when she (sad spoiler) wound up with a new partner, she didn't posture and he didn't grouse, they just did their jobs.
Cory was wonderful, and in this day of “alpha” men acting like jerks, strutting around lying and acting rude while being called “heroes” dominating the literary world, I LOVE that Cory was just a genuinely nice guy who told the truth even when he knew that it could cost him Max's respect, and that he was so openly romantic once he realized his feelings for her. We need more book heroes like Cory and less rich, alpha jerks in our lives. I would definitely read more stories about Detective Max and P.I. Cory solving crimes together should this ever become a series. (I also loved the plot that brought them together. It was so perfect!)
The murder mystery story line was interesting from the (admittedly startling) beginning right to the very end. I was sure that I had figured out why the big bad had done what he did, but I did not even begin to see all of the twists that happened coming, and those twists were my favorite parts of the book. Without getting specific and spoiling things, this book dealt with a very, VERY sensitive subject that I have first-hand experience with, and when we were first clued into it I admit that I was unsure of how it would play out and whether it would be done in a way that wasn't uncomfortable to read, but this author dealt with it SO perfectly. I was incredibly impressed. And yes, I cried A LOT during the last few chapters because they were so beautifully written that they were also painful to read. They were the kind of chapters that will probably always make me cry when I re-read them and that's a huge testament to Ms. Roberts' writing.
This is the second book that I have read by K.T. Roberts that I have thoroughly enjoyed, and I look forward to reading more from her in the future, no matter the genre.
I received an advanced copy and voluntarily wrote an honest review.
Note: I received this book for free in a Goodreads giveaway.
Oh my, this book was dreadful. First off, I thought it was going to be a crime thriller. Nope. At the end, it's described as "romantic suspense," a genre I do not read EVER. I never would have even entered the giveaway to win it, had I known that.
Frankly, this book doesn't really know what it wants to be, genre-wise. Another reviewer remarked on that idea and I agree with it.
But what didn't I like about this book? Let's see...
-Lots of head-hopping. Seriously, people, nothing makes you look more amateurish than head-hopping. Learn what it is, get it clear in your mind, and then DON'T DO IT. -Very, very unrealistic dialogue! Seriously, the author needs to brush up on some basic dialogue points for fiction. First off, stop using so many synonyms for "said." Second, stop having the characters address each other by name so much—people don't do that in real life! Third, learn to punctuate your dialogue properly! Nothing like seeing a comma after an ellipsis in parentheses to make you do a total face palm. -Cliched, cookie-cutter characters. We've got them all in here, the tropes of crime fiction. Single childless female detective looking for love? CHECK. Male partner who's like a father figure or brother to her? CHECK. (In fact, she has BOTH of these, as she changes partners early in the book. A double whammy!) Disgraced lawyer with a secret heart of gold, also looking for love? CHECK. World-renowned doctor who's an egomaniac ass? CHECK. Unhappy doctor's wife? CHECK. Corrupt politician getting involved with multiple characters for her own gain? CHECK. Villain who has suffered a Huge Loss and has possible Mental Issues that magically explain everything in the end? CHECK. I don't think I need to go on—you get the idea. -Somehow, not one, not two, but THREE of the characters are ex-military and have extensive experience in setting explosives. Correct me if I'm wrong, but is expertise in explosives all that common? I'm assuming it's not... -
Sigh. This book was a huge disappointment. I'm going to do better research of authors before I enter giveaways in the future because I don't want yet another experience like this. That's four hours of my life I spent reading this that I will never get back.
I want to thank K.T. Roberts, author and Goodreads First Reads for the Kindle book copy of Blind Retribution that I won in the Giveaway.
Blind Retribution starts with a murder of a famous heart surgeon's wife when his car is bombed in the drive of their home. It should have been an open and shut case but quickly became a puzzling mystery as other grisly murders are added to the mystery.
Detective Max Turner follows the clues and slowly uncovers a secret love affair, a cover-up of changing the order of heart transplant precipitants causing another child's death and two more murders that don't seem related to the first murder. She has the help of Private Investigator, Cory Rossini to bring in the killer and all the others that contributed to the causes of the Blind Retribution taken by the killer.
This is a GREAT mystery with a mature love story full of romance with a sweet guy and a strong woman that gets her tough job done.
I'll start out by saying this is one of the best books I've read this year! Mind blowing, edge of your seat romantic suspense! This is a story of corruption, deceit and greed mixed with sweet romance. When people do things for greed and don't care about how it will affect others, chaos ensues. The greed and error of Dr. Barrett and Kay Stansbury set in motion a horrific chain of events that lead to several people being murdered. Detective Max Turner is out to catch the killer of one Helen Barrett who was murdered in a horrific way and Max has her work cut out for her. Helen is married to Dr. Barrett but also has been having an affair with Jack Hughes so she needs to sift through the evidence and see where it takes her. Enter Cory Rossini who after being suspended from practicing law is now a PI who is also a long time friend of Jack Hughes and out to clear his friends name. While both the NYPD and Mr. Rossini are trying to solve the murder of Helen Barrett things keep popping up that make then both question their investigations. Add in the romance between the beautiful detective and the PI who are working the case from different sides and you've got one heck of a wild ride. When more murders start occurring and Max starts believing they're connected to her case things really start to heat up professionally and personally. She starts to believe that just maybe things aren't as clear cut as she originally thought. This story was intriguing and had me on the edge of my seat trying to sneak in a few chapters every chance I got as well as losing sleep so I could keep reading. Not often does a story grab at your heartstrings and have you so invested in the characters and the outcome that you become distracted from real life, but this story managed to do just that!
A very convoluted story involving a heart transplant surgeon, his wife, girlfriend and all the relevant employees of the Hospital. and a jilted lover who gets caught up in the tangled web.
I find this book to be very tastefully written, and therefore suitable for teens and above.
The author is to be commended for writing an exciting book that can be read by all who enjoy romantic suspense.
Maxine Turner is an NYPD detective investigating the murder of a prominent heart surgeon. Cory Rossini is a suspended lawyer working as a PI. Corys friend is arrested for the murder and he is determined to prove him innocent.
Max is a strong female character who doesn't allow anyone to push her around. At the same time she has a vulnerable side. Cory is a genuinely nice guy. He has had his law license suspended. What Cory did may have been legally unethical but he did it for the right reasons and doesn't blame anyone for his choices. Max and Corey have great chemistry and make a great couple. This book has it all, suspense, greed, murder and romance. It will keep you on the edge of your seat trying to figure out who the guilty party is. The ending of this book will tug at your heart. I would give this book 4 1/2 stars. Thank you to net galley for a copy for an honest review.
This was a really enjoyable story, that sucked me in and kept me hooked for the most part and was very detailed in the way a murder is investigated which I thoroughly enjoyed and I liked both of the main characters Max and Cory as well as Max's homicide partner Riley. As for the story it had a few twists and turns, it's certainly not full of suspense and is more of a murder mystery but I was really pulled into the investigation itself and found it extremely hard to put down as the story reached its conclusion. Although I felt the romance element was a little lacking and I would of loved more of it just to add another layer to the story, but I would recommend it to others. Especially if you love a good murder mystery/suspense.
***I was kindly provided with an ARC by Montlake Publishing/NetGalley in exchange for an honest review***
Fast paced police procedural that follows the investigation into a car bombing that killed a prominent heart surgeon's wife that unlocks a lot more crime with the suspect list growing longer as the investigation goes on.
I enjoyed the mystery/crime and police investigation part of the book. Very detailed and keeps the readers attention. The romance aspect was the weakest. Not believable and didn't seem to fit the work personalities of the hero and heroine.
Thank you for the Goodreads Giveaway; this was a gem of a distraction from my online coursework!
A great crime thriller with an interesting twist! Just when you think it's all wrapped up, surprise! Great characters including a strong female detective as the lead.
Definitely will be looking for other works by this author!
OMG! Just finished Blind Retribution. Wow, KT had me glued to the book with a believable plot and interesting action. I enjoyed the private eye Cory and his investigations. Sure had me fooled as to who the killer was. Excellent writing and just enough suspense to keep me interested and invested in the outcome. Wow, just wow. Love KT's writing and this was the best one yet
Blind Retribution is an engaging romantic suspense book written by author K. T. Roberts. It's an excellent police procedural with an incredibly sad ending. Thanks to NetGalley and Montlake Romance for the advance copy.
I really enjoyed every page of this book. The characters are so real. I loved the good ones and really disliked some of the others. The ending was good but very bittersweet. I would recommend this book to everyone.
Who did it? The book unfolds with twists that leave you uncertain. The list of suspects grows. The motives are all plausible. Get ready for an interesting read. Now I need to get another by this author.
Several stories rolled into one, this book kept my high interest. The characters in the story were real to me as I envisioned the entire story as it played out.
I won a Kindle copy of Blind Retribution from a Goodreads Giveaway.
This won't be a kind review so I'll try to make it short and sweet.
I really don't like the genre romantic suspense mostly because the romance outstrips the suspense 9 times out of 10 and its ridiculous as hell but I'm trying to keep an open mind here.
But its hard and Blind Retribution didn't help my open mind. I feel it closing in on me!
My pet peeves included:
1. Are the main characters and love interest, Max and Cory, educated middle-aged professionals or 16 year old horny teenagers? I don't know what was worse, their insta-love romance, which I didn't believe or...
2. The hokey, trite dialogue that included such winning lines like 'This wine is yummy' when Max and Cory are on a hot date. Barf.
3. I understand cliche characters will pop up in most novels but there are plenty of them running amok here including the partner who dies of a heart attack right before retirement (gasp), a new partner who is in awe of Max and would do anything for her (We're in NY, right, not Kansas), all the adultering secondary characters, the corrupt politician aren't they all?, add in a dash of medical malpractice and to tug on your heartstrings, don't forget the obligatory sickly child, the grieving father, and a sprinkling of revenge.
In the end, the suspense (or lack of) was not enough to save b>Blind Retribution from its cheesy cast of characters, bad writing and laughable dialogue.
Someone needs to watch an episode of any one of the awesome spin-offs of Law and Order to know what how actual New York City detectives act and behave.
This could easily have been a five star read for me. It was well written, the plot was excellent. I liked the way the author wrapped everything up at the end. My problem was, I didn't like the male lead. I couldn't get a handle on Cory at all and it started with his name - Cory. I don't think it fit for who the author was portraying him to be for one thing. It made me view him as foppish and at times, he came across as weak. Maybe because, Max, the female lead was very competent, independent and strong. I know many people will disagree but I'm sorry, it's how these characters came across to me. Max I loved. Cory, not too much. This even soured me on their romance because I couldn't get into his character.
This seldom happens to me and if not for Cory, like I said, five stars. I actually liked Jack, the accused, better than Cory. Not sure I'll purchase the next book, if this is going to be a series, with him in it.
DNF. Ugh, I'm kind of pissed I bought this book. Maybe it's because I've been reading at love of In Death lately, but I have higher standards for my procedural mystery books. I'm quitting at 25% and that's with the detective already thinking she has her man. Her approach - from gathering evidence, to questioning witnesses, to thinking about the case is just sub-par. I would hate to have to trust her in an investigation. Reading this reminds me of why I was hesitant to pick up the In Death books - because so many procedurals are just boring to me. This is. And the best part, the way it starts, I'm pretty confident who did it, so I don't even need to read on to figure it out.
If the conversations and characters were better I might feel a desire to continue, but to me everything is flat, stereotypical and uninteresting :(
I can honestly say that K.T. Roberts NEVER disappoints! From the first sentence until the very end, you are dragged in and taken along for quite a ride. From a developing romance, difficult case, uncertainties, suspects who say more by saying nothing than if they bothered to answer the questions. Lies told without thought, conflicting evidence and cover ups, the detectives have so much to sift through. I have read everyone of her books and have loved everyone. This story is so easy to get caught up in and VERY difficult to put down. Very realistic and detailed for how real police works, you feel you are right there with the detectives and how they feel. The very ending is a bit of a surprise even though there are very subtle hints throughout. I WILL be reading this book again......and again. Thank you K.T. for keeping me on my toes!
Blind Retribution is filled with intrigue, suspense, and mystery. And then there's the very sweet romance between the detective and the PI. Very complicated plot that keeps the reader moving forward just to figure out all the moving parts. Some very disturbing plot details may be upsetting when dealing with the death of children. Heartbreaking. By the end, when the mysteries are solved, it's heartwarming to learn that some of the proceeds from the sale of this book will be going to veterans with PTSD. Worth the read, if you like all of genres mixed together--it makes for a very complex story. I hope to read more by this author.
Buckle your seatbelt, you’re in for a thrilling ride…
Part police procedural, part mystery, part romance, part thriller, part suspense and all twisting and turning entertainment.
This is the first time I’ve read anything from author K.T. Roberts. I felt she did a great job blending ingredients from several genres to produce a satisfying novel that, just for a while, took me out of myself and into the precinct house with NYPD Detective Maxine Turner.
Other reviewers have done a better job laying out the plot points, so I will say only, nothing is what it appears when you’re dealing with Blind Retribution.
## This book was too long in my opinion. The story was too drawn out. It's a crime drama with a very thin romance thrown in. I usually like following along with the clues but this didn't progress quick enough for me. It took me several days to finish it, when generally I read a book in one day. Another thing that bugged me was the heroine. I get that she's a homicide detective and has to be tough, but I found her to be kind of a (b) witch. Bossy and condescending come to mind as well. Some of the dialogue seemed stilted as well. Sorry, I can't recommend.
An interesting and clearly well researched murder mystery/romantic novel. The author keeps up the intrigue until the very end, progressively uncovering layer after layer of clues while making sure the tension is broken in all the right places with an adorably perfect love story. I found it hard to put this book down, and when I did, it kept poking at the back of my mind, begging to be pick up again. This is the second book by this author I read, and I will definitely look up her other books. She is worth checking out! I really like the attention to detail.
I received this from Goodreads. The story starts with a woman, optimistic with regards to the future of her marriage, dying in an explosion. The subsequent police investigation uncovers so much more than her murder. Additionally, the lead investigator gets outside assistance and finds love in the bargain.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
An intriguing whodunit A pretty easy read in that things kept moving. Biggest complaint were a couple of sections describing sex scenes that I skipped over. I don't get that authors feel a need to throw that in as it doesn't add to the story, is a distraction and just plain silly. The book deals with a doctor and greed influencing who gets a transplant.
