On the one hand, I can't even begin to understand how that armor makes any sense. And wouldn't parts of it get a little rusty or something. (Yeah, I know why she is dressed that way, but still). On the other hand, it is really good story telling and Sonja kicks ass. Good illustration too.
This was my first Red Sonja graphic novel having read some of the novels earlier. With KU these books became available. This is a very short book and acts a re-introduction of sorts for Sonja's epic Oeming tale and series. The art and story arc flows with elan and is colorful and keeps the reader wanting more from the story. The adventure finishes almost before it has properly started but a good filler for the series that follows this tale. The story follows a bartender who tries to get the legend drunk so that she could steal the sword gets hopelessly wrong when Sonja annihilates everything but leaves the bartender alive, chained to spread her legend.

This is a 17 page prequel to Oeming's rendition (a 50 issue series) of the epic Red Sonja tale. This first offering is told from the POV of Jessa, a bartender who tries to get Red Sonja drunk so she can steal Sonja's blade. Fighting and hell-fury ensues.
I've enjoyed the Red Sonja story in its various forms since my childhood. Being a (natural) redhead myself, it was cool to have such a strong, bold fellow red to look up to! Hardcore feminists in this modern age might not love Sonja as she is typically portrayed, with overflowing lady bits and ridiculously useless chainmail bikini... as a woman, let me say, either take this for what it is and have fun with it or don't read it. I find the chain bikini hilarious the same way I laugh my way through the old movie adaptation that was done back in the 80s (I think.. maybe the 70s), where Bridgette Nielsen had to wear equally ridiculous outfits. I love it all. It's campy at times, laughably stupid in some scenes, but there are also moments where you can't help but cheer for Sonja's undeniable fierceness.
Oeming's version here offers gorgeous color work as well as prose that just oozes that legend feel. The reader, even if only briefly, gets the chance to escape into something with a true sense of epic-ness and just downright FUN. I thought this was a blast to read and look forward to trying out the rest in the series.
This comic is told from the viewpoint of Jessa, a barmaid, Red Sonja shows up in a town, apparently being chased by mercenaries and even though she has some drinks in her, at the pub, the mercenaries attack her and as Sonja is, she leaves not a one standing. She does leave Jessa to tell the story, chained to a tree, but still to tell the story.
The artwork is very well done, reminds me of the Red Sonja I used to read from some years ago. If you enjoy Conan, or have read SSOC than this comic should interest you.
The beginnings of the saga of Red Sonja on the Dynamyte Entertainment label gives us an introduction teasing the force of nature that the warrior with red hair can be.
For a publisher not in the Marvel/DC levels at the time, this was a good framing for her story to begin.
We the inhabitants of a small village decide to drug and rob Red Sonia, when she passes through, they get a lot more than they bargained for. This free comic book day installment of the epic story of the warrior maiden is beautifully illustrated and gives the reader a good way into the canon.
I have no problem with female characters that are written well. Sonja is not one of them. She pulls off stunts with ease that a trained man would have difficulty doing in a costume that is as impractical as it is ridiculous. Fortunately this cost me nothing and will save space when I delete it.
I do enjoy comics and graphic novels and especially those like this. Conan, vampirella and Red Sonya are some of my favourites. Short but very enjoyable.
I got a bunch of free comics on Comixology that I haven't yet dived into, so that's what I'm doing. It's been ages since I've gotten to really sit down and enjoy a comic book. I'm looking for some new stuff. I've been a fan of Red Sonja's ever since I was a kid, introduced by the cheesy but yet awesomely bad but brilliant film of the 1980s. I've read some stories on this fierce woman, but I haven't kept up with her for some time. Trying to get myself reintroduced to her. Now this pre-first issue is sort of here to wet your appetite, and I am intrigued by it. Just might pick up the rest of this run and see how it all goes. I like the artwork, and boy can Sonja get around barely wearing anything, amazingly no wardrobe malfunctions. Sonja is still bad ass and awesome. Not much goes on in the story presented, it doesn't get into Sonja's motivations or really get into anything about her. We see her through the eyes of another. There's really not much in this, but it does peek my interest for this run. I'll get to it one day.
I didn't care for the artwork in this issue if it had been more to my taste it would have been a 5 star book, I still gave it 4 stars because the story itself is one of the best Red Sonja tales I've ever read.
Love this art style, particularly the colouring. Sceptical about such a ridiculously-dressed character. Will she just be fan service? Who knows. I'd like to give the arc a chance to take her somewhere interesting.
Once more Red comes drinks kills and rides into another adventure. Like Conan, but with better butt and that is way it's important to show it on every page. Twice at least.
