Le bugie del nostro amore

Rate this book

Warning: slight rant to follow
I've loved and I mean LOVED Chelsea's Fall and Rise series. So when I heard she's coming out with a new book and I read the blurb for Behind to Back, I didn't even have to think twice jumping at the chance to read it. Then I started reading it...and I swear I kept checking the cover to make sure I was reading a book by the same author.

This book puts Kristen Ashley's descriptiveness to shame. I have never read so much mundane and unnecessary details in a book before. But while KA's descriptiveness somehow works in her books, here it was just empty and pointless. I mean for gawd's sake, I knew what the hero ate, what he wore, what he thought about wearing, what he drove, what he thought about driving. I swear, if I had to read about his bowel movements; (1) I actually wouldn't have been surprised given everything else that's described and (2) I would have chucked my kindle out the window.

I originally DNF'd this at 35% because I had no connection with the story or the characters. None. How could I? Let me give you a cliff notes version of the first 30%.
Spoiler alert: nothing happens.

We meet the protagonist. He has a name, but it's not his real one. He shares this with you through his internal monologue at least 5 times. He goes into a coffee shop and notices the heroine, who's wearing a disguise...but you have no idea why. (Cue intrigue)

He goes out and does a bunch of stuff while having a lot more internal thoughts.
He gets home. Goes to sleep. Oh and he has a cat named Leo.

He wakes up. Talks about his mission to punish all the bad men for the bad things they did through their money, but you have no idea why. He has a team of people that do this with him, but you have no idea how they work. Oh and one of them is gay and the other is a manwhore....because every book needs those.

He wakes up the next day. Has a shave. Thinks about what he's going to wear. Decides on the Briani. (my uncultured self had to look up Briani). Thinks about whether to take the Royce or the Ferrari. Goes out. Does stuff... But you still have no idea what he does aside from his "day job". Comes home. Goes to sleep.

He wakes up. Eats something. Thinks about his cat. Hangs out with his friends who also work with him, they talk about a bunch of stuff. Goes home because he has a migraine and goes to sleep.

He wakes up. Talks to his friend/"team mate" about what to wear to better attract the heroine. Goes out. Does a bunch of stuff. Comes home. Goes to sleep.

Bla bla bla next 20% bla bla bla.

He's still looking for the heroine. But you have no idea why. Because her daddy did a bad thing but you have no idea what. He goes home again because he has a headache. Cuddles his cat. Goes to sleep.

Wakes up the next day. Goes looking for the heroine. He has a coffee. Can't find the heroine. Goes home. Talks with his teammates about updates...though at this point I just don't care..

Wakes up the next day. Sets up another failed attempt to meet the heroine. Flirts with a girl at a bar. Takes his fancy suit and fancy car home. Goes to sleep...his cat is also home. Because...you know...he has a cat and stuff.

Wakes up again. Meets with his teammates to complain how he can't seem to set up the "accidental" meet with the heroine. Thinks about more mundane stuff. Oh he also does some work and stuff. Goes home and goes to sleep.

7 weeks later, 7000 mundane details later and he still hasn't met the heroine.

Oh but wait, when he finally DOES meet her, all it takes is their eyes to connect for him to burn for her. (Cue eye roll)

At this point I was actually forcing myself to keep reading in hopes something, anything would happen. But any connection I could have had for the characters or their story was lost somewhere between the hero's metrosexual percolating over his car and wardrobe choices and the really bad analogies.

Analogies like this
She's...fragile. Like a glass holding a bouquet of beautiful flowers that would shatter if you bump it too hard.

or this
She tastes like fire. Hot and sweet.

And cheesy lines like this
My heart always seems to know when Saige is in range and speeds up. It's not something I can help. It's just a bodily response to a beautiful and funny and sexy woman. My biological need to mate and continue the species.

or this...
You're like a walking piece of art. And I really, really like art.

I felt like the entire story was being told to me as opposed to shown. There really wasn't any depth to the characters, aside from the hero's internal monologue of details that have no added value to the actual story.
The only saving grace for me was the twist at the very end. Unfortunately by then it was just a little too late. I don't care enough about the couple to be curious as to what happens with them in the next book. I don't like the hero, and I'm simply not intrigued enough by the heroine.

Will I read future books by this author? Absolutely and without a doubt. Even the best of authors can write a book that won't work for you once in a while. I don't expect them all to be winners, and just because I didn't enjoy this particular book, doesn't mean other readers won't. I've loved her other work, and I'd never judge an author's talent by one book alone. So if this is your first book by this author and you didn't enjoy it, please don't let it stop you from reading her other work because it really was fantastic, as I'm sure her future books will be.

3.5 "I knew you were trouble" stars

Quinn Brand is a successful businessman, working in finance and helping rich people with their investments. Or maybe not? Maybe his real name is Sylas, he's a simple boy who enjoys beer and hamburgers and hanging out with his cat, instead of hiding his tattooed body under expensive suits. He pretends to be someone else. He wears his facade and the only way to move on with the plan is to get under her skin. If only she knew that he's using her to get to her father..

Saige is fierce, passionate, a redhead rebel with a tattoo and piercings. She is a spitfire and for the first time ever his mark is a challenge. But what should be an easy mission, seems to get complicated when he realizes that this girl is trouble and he becomes obsessed with her, when this wasn't supposed to happen. Is he really going to follow the plan and break her heart in the process?

I always struggle when it comes to putting my thoughts into words. There's not much I can say about this book. I enjoyed the writing and the characters seemed to have many layers. I think this book could give a new meaning to the quote "looks are deceiving". I liked Cash's character and his friendship with the guys was really wonderful. I do hope we get to see more of them and his 'mystery' past in the next book.

However, I have to admit that it was very predictable to me and I always appreciate the element of surprise, something that didn't meet my expectations here. It was so obvious that I hoped the so called cliffhanger wouldn't be what I thought to be. I was disappointed because I had seen that coming from miles away and I got bummed because of it.

I still enjoyed the story though and I'm curious to see how it's going to continue in the next book. It was also quite steamy and I enjoyed their dates and conversations about life, movies and books. The hero is swoon worthy, so if you're into tattooed guys with suits and a cat as a pet and heroines with an attitude, then you'll definitely like this one ;)

DNF at 57%

Meandering prose.
Stilted dialogue.
Flat characters.
Too much inner monologue.
Too many details that doesn't add anything to the overall plot.

I was bored. Just bored. I'm sure there's a point to all these but it's too much telling and not enough showing. I'm sorry but I couldn't find the strength to continue. So DNF.

THIS. BOOK. I was not expecting that.

This is my first read from Chelsea Cameron and now I'm wondering why. Behind Your Back is such a fast read, which is perfect for readers who wanna get lost in a romantic and suspenseful tale.

I have to admit that I was 30% in and I still wasn't aware of what was happening. Our main character, Quinn, is so mysterious. I was not used to reading from a male's perspective but in here, it surprisingly worked very well for me. I love that I can feel his struggles and that Chelsea Cameron made him a very believable character. I don't think I can say the same with Saige though. Its not that she's an awful or bad character, its just that I don't feel her genuineness yet. I absolutely can't wait to get my hands on the sequel (which is on Saige's perspective) I really need some answers from her. And I wanna know her better.

This is why I enjoyed this story very much. Chelsea Cameron played me and I'm not even complaining. Quinn and Saige was characters full of depth that you really have to dig deep and read through to get to know them. Chelsea's writing is eloquent that's why I didn't have any problem while reading it. Everything was so smooth and every chapter was full of anticipation.

Although I wish that it was longer, I do believe that Chelsea has amazing things planned out for this series, I'm ready for more mystery and suspense. I honestly can't wait to be played again by this author, Chelsea Cameron gained a new fan in me.

Financial adviser, Quinn Brand(pseudonym) is a Robin Hood of sorts. Taking from the rich and giving to the poor. Namely himself - Sylas Carter, and his band of brothers. All of their lives ruined by circumstances all out of their control. Coming together to form a brotherhood, with one end result on the horizon. They move around a lot. Never staying too long in one place. Aiding the rich in getting richer. While helping himself to their millions. Plotting, scheming, lies and deceit, routine casings, all a strategic plan, to obtain and gain enough leverage, to rob the unethically rich.

When his client/target, Mr. Beaumont, asks him to make some under the counter investments, Quinn knows in order to get into Mr. Beaumont's inner social circle, he needs to use the one weapon, that will undoubtedly, get the target's attention, when the time is right. He seduces the client's daughter, Saige Juliette Beaumont.

Perfect. Using her to break him will make this all the sweeter in the end.

With his plan in place, Quinn never thought he would encounter someone like Saige. He keeps having this insatiable emotional need for Saige. A need he doesn't understand.

Saige is fierce and so different from other privileged children he knows. She's sweet and lovable, also determined and headstrong. She challenges him, in a way no other ever has. Making him want to reveal all his secrets. Just to spend more time with her.

I've never felt this way about someone and I can't deny it anymore.

The suspense and mystery intensifies when Sylas, alias Quinn, comes home after a night of shmoozing and gets some anonymous texts alluding to knowing his plan and him not getting away with it. And so the plot thickens. Secrets are revealed and, trusts betrayed. Ultimately, feelings and emotions are shattered, as the villains meet face to face.

A predictable story, and yet even though I knew what would eventually happen, I was still so excited to see it unveiled. I loved all the different layers of Sylas and Saige, their time spent together was a fantasy. And I had some awww moments when it came to Sylas and his thoughts and emotions.

Looking forward to book 2.

Too repetitive. I've read works of this author before and I genuinely enjoyed it but all her characters are all stock. There are barely distinguishing features in her characters in comparison to characters in her other books. It took me quite a while to finish this because of the dull pace too. The plot only picks up at like... the very last paragraph. Making this into a series is unnecessary, because if she just shortened the useless and dull rambling, she could have created something great. This is mediocre at best. Won't continue reading the series.

Consigliato!

CANNOT WAIT FOR BOOK 2 - I think I may love Sylas

Behind Your Back is a departure from Chelsea’s usual writing style, showcasing her talent for suspense with this twisted tale.

In all honesty Behind Your Back is very difficult to sum up. The plot is multi-layered. Told from Quinn’s perspective, the reader is left to put the pieces of the puzzle together for themselves as the plot unfolds. Who is Quinn? Who is Sylas? Who are the good guys and who are the bad guys?

I absolutely adored Sylas, the further into the story I got the more my adoration grew. I still can’t decide exactly how his role can be described and I think (hope) it is going to be a surprising twist in the next book, Back to Back. However, I will say that Sylas continual managed to surprise me with his inner thoughts and feelings. A lot of which were contradictory to how he is living his life and the persona he projects. The glimpses into the heart of Sylas made me fall for him even more. I will take this moment to mention my love of Sylas’s cat, Leo. Chelsea has captured the cats personality brilliantly alongside the connection Sylas has formed with his pet ♥

The duplicity within the narrative add to the tension and makes you question EVERYTHING. Sylas and Saige are intrigue characters caught up in a web of deceit BUT who is spinning the thread???

Insight is provided as past events are revealed. Chelsea does an amazing job of showing how a single event can shape the rest of your life. That defining moment that alters a persons perspective and influences the decision they make from then on.

Behind Your Back has raised a lot of questions that I am desperate to answer. Back to Back alters to Saige’s point of view where I am hoping all those questions will be answered and a resolution to all involved is reached – I’m cautiously optimistic :-)

e ½.
È abituato a tutto, o quasi.
Stavolta sembra tutto diverso.

DNF at 55%.

I spent this book treading water, and frankly, my legs are tired, so I'm getting out of the pool.

Around 33% I said that I thought things were happening. I was wrong. They weren't happening.

Perhaps I couldn't get into this because the main character is hugely manipulative. And I didn't know anything else redeeming about him that could have me forgive his sins...whatever they are. Here, Sylas/Quinn/whatever-the-fuck-he's-calling-himself-today is going after Saige for a job and he reminds himself of that. Over and over. and over. He has a cat named Leo that he's obsessed with. He has a group of "friends" who also do these "jobs" with him and they have a lot of money. That fact is mentioned over and over again, too. They also sell drugs. I was surprised I lasted until 55% with the whole drug selling thing.

I felt that a lot of what I read was extremely repetitive and contained a lot of information about nothing. Things that didn't push the story forward. There is a lot of 'in Quinn's head' content and not a ton of dialogue. I'm fine with knowing what's going on in his head, but it became way too much.

I couldn't feel a connection with either Quinn or Saige. I actually liked Saige from the brief interactions Quinn/Sylas had with her, but there wasn't enough promise there for me to keep reading. Gah, sorry. Just couldn't get into it.

Prevedibile. Noioso. Ripetitivo.

If I had to describe this book in one word, it would definitely be “intriguing.” I kind of expected this by reading the blurb but I find that books sometimes deviate from their blurbs. This was not the case with Behind Your Back. The author gives us little bits of information throughout the story but there is always the constant mystery of the stalker there to keep the reader wondering what is really going on. We are never given the whole picture and then at the end we get the unexpected shocking twist that will make you kill for the next book.

Sylas is a pretty awesome character and the story is told from his point of view except for the last chapter where it switches to Saige. We don’t get to know her that well but both of them are an interesting couple and I hope we get to see Saige’s side of things in the next book.

The only reason I took off a star is because the writing didn’t flow so well for me and it caused my attention to drift on several occasions. It’s not that the writing was bad, it just felt kind of choppy at times and I had to make an effort to get back on track. Other than that it was great and I’m anxiously awaiting the sequel.

I dialoghi lasciano a desiderare.

I was provided an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.

I was super excited for this book to come out. Romance and suspense, all right up my alley. Plus, I've read some of Chelsea's books and loved them (My Favorite Mistake is still one of my fav books ever). So needless to say I NEEDED to read this book.

However, I have to say that the book didn't live up to my expectations. It was a good book, but it was just that. Good.

I had a hard time getting into the story overall and connecting to the characters. I still didn't completely at the end of the book, so that was one of the things that took the joy out of reading for me a little bit. The story had great potential and did keep my interest, but just fell flat at times. In the end, there is so much mystery surrounding Quinn/Sylas, that you just wanna know what exactly is happening with him, what his game is and where he comes from. So that is a definite plus of the book.

The parts I loved most actually weren't the interactions between Quinn/Sylas and Saige, but the interactions between him and his friends and his sister. It felt during those moments that I could actually connect with his character. And they were a fun bunch, all of them!!

So what else to say: What really had me hooked though was the ending: Oh my, the ending is the reason why I definitely wanna read the next book, because while I should've seen it coming, I just really didn't.

So this is still a 3-star-good-book-read for me and I'm definitely gonna read book number two!

Always yours,
Yvi

I received an ARC of this book from InkSlinger PR in exchange for an honest review and as part of the book's blog tour promotions.

This book garnered more negative reviews than anticipated, I am sure. Me, I kind of liked it. I liked the intent of the story. I mean, if you read the blurb, it was good. It was intriguing, even. It's a story you wouldn't want to pass up.

The problem was in the execution. I think there were too many fillers that you almost couldn't wait until the actual story started. I like the hero and the heroine together, but it was difficult to remember that they were the core of the story if there were so many factors being added into the book.

I have to say, though, that I still liked this book. I liked the main story. I liked what the author wanted to show. I'd definitely read the second book because I want to know what happens next in the story. Also, I think that the author is a very talented one not only because of this book, but because all her other have been great and entertaining.

2.5 stars. It might have been three if I had rated it yesterday, though.

So much nothing happens in this book. Keeping the reader guessing only works if there are reveals along the way. There are bits, but they're too tiny to validate why Silas/Quinn and friends are perpetrating their rouse. These bits were barely enough to keep my interest and really didn't do much to validate anyone's motives at all.

The first third of the book is so slow. We learn so little that I wonder why it was so drawn out. There's no connect with the character. In fact, it's so cryptic that I wondered why I kept going.

By the end, I had predicted the big cliffhanging reveal. Hopefully, the second book will answer all my questions, especially what happened to his sister and why she needs to be taken care of in a facility. Yes, that's my biggest question at this point. Not why the major plot points are occurring; it's all about a secondary character and her mystery diagnosis. Probably not the author's intent.

Behind You Back is a story filled with passion, betrayal, and lots of secrets. Brand is part of a circle of men working together to help him in ruining a man. Unfortunately that includes him getting involved with the man's daughter named Quinn. What he doesn't count on is falling for her. He will have to decide if he can leave her behind and live without her. That will depend on if she could possibly forgive him for the lies and the hurt she suffers with all that happens.

I loved this romance with a whole lot of suspense wrapped around it. You can't help but hope that Brand will follow his heart instead of his band of merry men and the plans they have in place. What I definitely didn't count on was the kick ass cliffhanger tacked on to a really good story. I didn't see it coming and it made the love the book so much more. I can't wait to read what happens next.

I give Behind Your Back 4 hearts!

ERIN'S REVIEW
4 STARS

This story was so involved and detailed. The characters are living two different lives. The twists this book took kept me hooked. I seriously did not see the ending coming! I am in serious need of the second book!

Quinn (Sylas) is a character that is very closed off about his past, even with those closest to him. He takes his job very seriously and is determined to let nothing stand in his way. Saige is a rebel who tries to do everything to irritate her parents. She wants to live her own life and make her own decisions without the constant interference of her parents.

Quinn has a full time job keeping his secrets in check and not letting anything slip. He is so close to the close of this job. He just needs to finish up and get the heck out of dodge.

Saige has other plans.

I never not finish a book,as in NEVER, even if it will take me forever, I'll make sure I will read it up to the last word. Well, not until this book came along. Yes, there's always a first for everything. I am kind of scared this "not finishing a book" will become a habit, I hope to hell not. I was at 65% or so, and I just couldn't bring myself to finish it. It was flat, the characters were weak and very inconsistent, the plot was promising but did not quite hold up to its promise, there are many unecessary details, and it was just not what I had expected. Being my first Chelsea Cameron read, I was really disappointed I've heard a lot of good things about her, and so yes this makes me really sad.

Maybe Ill find time in the future to finish it, but no sweetheart, not today.

Reading Challenge 2015.
