Fandoms: Bleach, Harry Potter
--------------------------------------------------
Ichigo’s been ordered to go undercover at a magic school to bodyguard a kid named Harry Potter, and this would be fine, except that he’s about as good at bodyguarding as he is at magic. And he considers it a good day, magic-wise, if he hasn’t set anything on fire.

This is amazing in every possible way. Seriously, if you are even moderately interested in anything about this story (Bleach, Harry Potter, Ichigo attending Hogwarts as Harry's bodyguard) its got fantastic storytelling and good writing and is one of the funniest things I've read. I highly recommend this to everyone!

Also while this is chock full of great moments and quotes, I think this is my favorite one:
“Stab his eyes out, Potter!” Malfoy screams from the Slytherin table.

Ichigo’s glad to see he hasn’t lost his knack for bringing people together. Also, Potter’s gotten a lot faster. Always nice to see improvement.

AN: I wrote this mostly because, despite the surprising number of Bleach/Harry Potter fics out there, none of them seem to address the fact that sending Ichigo to Hogwarts is basically the same as swinging a wrecking ball directly into the side of the castle.
omg gimme. this sounds amazing. i need this in my life

Sidesplittingly hilarious. I did have to brush up my Bleach background knowledge again, but it’s worth it.

It also nicely points out all that’s logically wrong with Harry and his environment, in the most sarcastic and unhelpful ways possible :D This is just brilliant, and some of the snarky comments by various people, and the comparisons, are… oh well just read it.

It’s written in present tense, which is irritating once you notice it because you take a break from the story. But not for long, it’s executed well enough.

I was completely unfamiliar with Bleach, but I decided I really did want to read such a highly-regarded and humorous tale from a writer whose other work I'd enjoyed, so I took a quick look at the overview page and Ichigo's character page of the series wiki before starting this fic.
Obviously, I can't properly evaluate how true-to-canon the Bleach characters are, but I really liked how the different magical/spiritual paradigms were combined and contrasted. For example, the Hogwarts ghosts are terrified of Ichigo, but he is reassured by how stable they are.
Most of the Potterverse characters (whom I can confirm are well-depicted) wind up convinced that Ichigo (as well as his teachers and/or colleagues, for those who meet them) is nuts, whether that makes them fascinated, bewildered, angry, or avoidant. There are many hilarious interactions, and internal musings on how ridiculous some things in the wizarding world (e.g., medical care) are to an outsider perspective, a trope I'm often drawn to.
In addition to the Golden Trio, Fred and George Weasley play a significant part as allies (look out, world, and especially Dolores Umbridge!), along with Luna (whose smarter-and-wiser-than-she-seems nature Ichigo recognizes) and Neville ... and creative use of the Room of Requirement.
I don't want to get too spoiler-y, but Ichigo is not as prone as Dumbledore to keeping the kids in the dark. He also gives no respect to the prophecy, and has unconventional ideas re. "training" and re. the characteristics and separation of the four houses. (And the advice he gives Sirius!!! 😆)
The horcrux hunt takes a very different course, starting with Ichigo's assumption that since Voldemort's "soul-splitting" was in his briefing packet, it must be common knowledge among those involved — which it wasn't! (That's not the only "How did you know..." either, nevermind "How did you do that?!")
There are a number of exciting twists, and angsty emotion alongside all the laughs — plenty of past and present trauma to go around!
I think I'll stop here, though. I do recommend this free online read, even to others like me ignorant of the anime. Just learn about shinigami and Ichigo's unusual human/shinigami status, and dive in — what can it hurt to at least give the beginning a try?

I love reading fanfic, and this year Book Riot's Read Harder challenge had a section for reading fanfic so I re-read this one.

It asks the question "what would happen if Ichigo Kurasaki went to bodyguard Harry Potter?" and although I don't follow Bleach very well, I was able to keep up with the characters.
