Lucius Annaeus Seneca, unul dintre reprezentantii de frunte ai perioadei numite „stoicismul imperial”, este de obicei definit ca un indrumator de constiinta sau indrumator spiritual. Scrierile lui sint deopotriva invatatura filozofica si exercitii de meditatie, pentru acestea din urma filozoful citind numeroase fapte istorice ca exemple ce trebuie urmate sau evitate. Volumul de fata cuprinde si o serie de consideratii privind fizica, dar cugetarea lui Seneca este preponderent etica si consta in teorii privind studiul organizarii lumii, ideile cosmopolitismului, caracterul social al oamenilor, natura lor rationala, egalitatea dintre toti oamenii.

Lucius Annaeus Seneca (often known simply as Seneca or Seneca the Younger); ca. 4 BC – 65 AD) was a Roman Stoic philosopher, statesman, and dramatist of the Silver Age of Latin literature. He was tutor and later advisor to emperor Nero, who later forced him to commit suicide for alleged complicity in the Pisonian conspiracy to have him assassinated.
