Once again, Clarissa Johal has demonstrated that you don't need a cast of thousands, or multiple subplots, or exotic locations to write a compelling novel. All you need is a good story, razor-sharp prose, and the ability to create dramatic conflict between believable characters. I'm a fan of Clarissa Johal's work and I think this is her best to date. The character of Poppy herself is immensely likeable and I enjoyed her banter with the enigmatic Dante. Their dialogue was handled with all the expertise I have come to expect from this author and there were touches of humour that made me burst out laughing.
The novel is beautifully crafted and there isn't an unnecessary word or phrase to be found, while the rhythm of the prose makes it so easy to read. The tension builds up nicely throughout the narrative and the author gives the reader every reason to fear for the safety of both the living characters and those in the spirit world who need Poppy's help.
There was only one thing I didn't like about this novel: the ending. It happened too soon. More of the same, please, author!

Poppy is one of those books that really grabs you in the beginning and doesn’t let go. It’s fun and has quirky characters that occasionally has you laughing and cringing at the same time.

This book had me cracking up. The main character, Poppy (duh), sounds super cute and adorable. She is a little clueless in some ways, but not in a way that makes her sound dumb. It’s actually kind of sweet, though frustrating. Especially when it comes to her friendship with Dante. Her personality is fun, even though she has to deal with some crappy situations.

She works in a funeral home and sees and talks to ghosts. She usually helps them find their way to the afterlife. But something is stealing the souls of the people she is trying to help, and she needs to find out who or what is doing that. The way Johal has written it, you can tell that Poppy cares about the ghosts she helps. It seems he has an emotional connection to them and legitimately wants to help.

Overall, I really liked this book. I thought the cover was really nice too, which isn’t something I normally notice or care about. There were times where I felt like there may have been a few too many side characters, but it wasn’t anything that really took away from the story. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a fun and quirky paranormal/ghost book.

This is one of the best books I've read this year! It got my attention from the very first page, and I didn't want to put it down. There was a great combination of humor and tension, and I'm a big fan of the relationship between Poppy and Dante.

Poppy is not your typical mortician. She is obsessed with the color pink, and she can see and speak to the spirits of the dead---and isn't a big fan of socializing with the living. She's a little clueless, and a little reckless, but that just adds to her appeal.

The plot is well-developed, and flows well. There is plenty of action--something is happening on nearly every page.

So far I've read three books by this author, and each one has been better than the last. I hope we get to read more about Poppy in the future!

This was a book not to be put down, so make sure you've got a few hours before opening that first page.

The main character is a true delight--sassy, cute, warm hearted and simply in a class all of her own. I was surprised because I assumed this would have a very dark feel the whole way through. And there are enough moments to leave strange tingles running up and down the spine. But it's more than that.

This story grabs with humor, sweetness, and pretty dark twists at times. The conversations with the ghosts is a real treat and adds a lovely sense of lightness to balance off the spookier shadows.

Summed up, this is a wonderful read even for chickens like me.

A heads up: you do NOT have to read Struck before reading Poppy!

I absolutely adore this book! It was the perfect mix of snarky comments and creepy entities. I finished this in a single sitting and don't regret it despite only surviving the next day thanks to coffee! Poppy is witty, sarcastic and fierce! With an awesome fashion sense haha The story flowed well and even in the less action-y scenes Poppy's wit kept it entertaining.

I'll admit that I definitely scare easy, and this book had me sleeping with the TV on for light. I swear someone was watching me from the corner of the room! I fell in love with the characters and I hope to read more of their story!

This was such a great story – I loved it!

Poppy is one of those fun, funky characters that you would love to be friends with. She has her own unique style with a attitude to go with it. On top of this, she works at a funeral parlor and can speak to the dead!

This made for some funny conversations and a truly unique story. That being said, this did have a mysterious side as well as nerve wracking darker side. All these elements mixed together kept me glued to this book. I definitely recommend it and will be watching for more stories from this author!
