Hard book to rate. In the end of it all I was not a fan, so as much as I want to give it 3 sympathy stars, it just was not a story I enjoyed.
I did like Part 1 a lot and was hoping the sequel would be at least as good. It wasn’t.
For most of the book I actually felt like I was reading a side story...

Characters: 3

Good set up and solid set of characters. Obviously the Witch is the main one in all this and the Prince unfortunately is not there for about 90% of the book. I kept wondering where the name of the book came from and I am still wondering. Malfrida, however faulty was a very solid character and a fun one to watch go through her struggles. I felt like everyone around her was sort of a side characters which felt underdeveloped and not sympathetic in the slightest. I suppose it’s her book so that is only fair. I would’ve preferred to have some more “oomph” to what felt like a set of cardboard people.

Plot: 1

The worst part of the whole story because there really isn’t one until about 3/4 into the book. Malfrida just sort of roams around for more hen half of the boom in a traditional travelogue fashion, which I really couldn’t stand. I literally had to read this one chapter at a time and take days long breaks in between chapters to detox.
Just when I thought the book was getting good, and things were looking up, it took the turn for the worst.
I’m not usually the squirmy one but this one was...I’m just not a fan.

Setting: 3

Now the setting was interesting. The writer thoroughly researched the times, habits and clothing styles of people of old Kiyv Rus’ and it shows. Her writing style is beautiful and engaging, albeit not easy to read. From perspective of culture it was engrossing and immersive and a treat to read. If it only the story did not lack in all other departments, the setting would have shone so much better.

I’m torn if I should continue the series, but my OCD will probably make me finish the series.

I would not recommend you read this one.
