Rate this book
THE INCREDIBLE AS-IT-HAPPENED  STORY OF LEICESTER CITY’S MARCH TO  PREMIER LEAGUE VICTORY

In August 2015 bookmakers priced Leicester at 5000-1 to win the Premier League – the same odds as Elvis being found alive.

On 2 May 2016, the impossible happened – Leicester won, to ecstatic celebrations in the city and around the world.

Relive this remarkable season with Rob Tanner, the Leicester Mercury ’s chief football writer, from the great escape of 2015 to the curtain-closer at Stamford Bridge, via Ulloa’s last-gasp winner at Norwich and Vardy’s stunning volley against Liverpool.

Detailing the key matches and turning points, Tanner’s book tells the inside story of Leicester City’s heroic year of triumph – and the players who under Claudio Ranieri’s inspired leadership became the most unlikely champions in football history.

Really entertaining read if you like underdog stories or you're a Leicester City fan like me. It's amazing what people can achieve if they all work hard for each other and pull in the same direction, being united in a common belief and a common purpose.

I've had a bit of a soft spot for Leicester City since Martin O'Neill was their manager with the likes of Emile Heskey, Matt Elliott and Neil Lennon in the team. So I was looking forward to reading this account of the 2015/16 season when against all odds Leicester won the Premier League.

The book is written by Rob Tanner, chief football writer at the Leicester Mercury and provides a detailed account of Leicester's transformation from a team at the bottom of the league who narrowly avoided relegation the previous season to unexpected champions. Starting with the appointment of Claudio Ranieri following the unexpected sacking of Nigel Pearson, the reader is taken through the season month by month. As well as accounts of each match, each chapter also contained Rob Tanner's blogs, written for the Mercury's website, and mini biographies of many of the players.

I found this a very enjoyable and uplifting read. I think everyone roots for the underdog so a lot of people would've enjoyed seeing Leicester win the league - and win by 10 points. Only Blackburn had managed to break the stranglehold of the Premiership heavyweights such as Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal before the 2015/16 season.

The author is obviously a big fan and his enthusiasm and knowledge shone through. He obviously has a good relationship with the club. It was clear that the owners of the club, whilst injecting large amounts of cash to allow Leicester to buy players and improve their facilities, also kept the traditions of the club and encouraged links to the local community, making it very inclusive.

Ranieri comes across as a very astute manager who knows how to get the best out of his players, invariably polite and dignified. Although known as the Tinkerman, he had the sense to keep on the backroom team and in particular the scouts who had bought top quality players for bargain prices, spotting their potential when other clubs passed them over.

It was clear from this book that it was teamwork that won Leicester the league that season. It's true that Jamie Vardy with his 24 league goals played a large part but there were many others who played in most of the games and I think it was that stability that was key. They only lost 3 league matches all season! It's also true that many of the top clubs had lacklustre seasons - notably Chelsea, the previous season's winners but there's no disputing that Leicester were worthy winners.

As I read through the book there was a palpable sense of growing excitement as the world's media gradually realised what a big story this could be. I was amused to read that some locals believed that Richard III, now buried in Leicester cathedral, was influencing the results from beyond the grave! It was clear that the whole city - indeed the whole county - were firmly behind the team - which I suppose happens when a city has only one major football team.

A book both entertaining and informative (now I know why Marc Albrighton left Aston Villa!). Let's hope that it's not too long before another underdog defies the odds and wins the Premiership!

Feels not so long ago but half the team is now either retired or in Saudi Arabia. But a nice fairy tale to hear again

At the end of a frenetic 2015 season of the English Premier League, which saw the usual suspects for the title come a cropper, Leicester City were crowned Champions of England. The Foxes who had escaped relegation by the skin of their collective teeth the previous season had upset all apple carts, braved seemingly impossible odds that placed them 5000-1 to win the League, to script one of the most miraculous fairy tales involving an underdog, in the annals of sporting history.

Rob Tanner has been following the fortunes and mostly misfortunes of Leicester in his capacity as a reporter for the Leicester Mercury newspaper. He hence was in a vantage position to report upon the amazing turn of fortunes enjoyed by his dear side. In this fascinating and crisp book, he shares his ringside view with the readers who were regaled by the team in Blue over a pulsating span of 38 games. Capturing the surge of the indomitable City braves from month to month, Tanner entertains the reader by chronicling the exploits of Claudio Ranieri's Rainmen with delightful vigour and deft verve. A team which was dubbed the "Misfits", with a Manager at the helm whose appointment was met with trepidation rather than hope, upset all lofty calculations, pulled punches beyond their weight before holding aloft the League Trophy with their nearest rivals trailing by a whole 10 points in their wake.

Rob Tanner captures in a brilliant manner all the emotions, exhilaration, exasperations and euphoria surrounding the fairy tale of Leicester City. He also profiles in an endearing manner the rise of some of the extraordinary talent such as the mercurial Jamie Vardy; the artistic Riyad Mahrez, the indefatigable Kasper Schmeichel and the ever reliable Andy King. All these superstars were prior to the commencement of the season unwanted footballers deemed incapable of achieving success. However a bunch of ordinary but determined band of brothers bonded together to create history, and in the process becoming extraordinary individuals themselves.

As the book climaxes in a crescendo of triumph and glory, one may be forgiven for wiping an involuntary happy tear. However in Leicester City, thousands of proud individuals shed copious amount of tears as they celebrated the unparalleled achievement of their champions - a bunch of Foxes had transformed themselves into a formidable pride of lions!

"5000-1......." - Odds are firmly against reading this lovely book just once! A deserving tribute to a team that dared to dream!

I’m no fan of Leicester City football club, but seeing the Foxes won the Premier League is a memorable experience, watching Vardy and his band of misfits launched their famous blitzkrieg-like counterattacks again and again. After having struggled to stay in Premier League, City’s 2015/2016 season started rather inauspiciously, with Nigel Pearson, who guided them to survive, suddenly left the club. The replacement was not very inspiring either, Claudio Ranieri, the original Tinkerman, who was recently fired from his job as Greece national football manager after its embarrassing loss to Faroe Islands. Even the pundits predicted that they would certainly be relegated by the end of season, bookers put their chance to win Premier League at 5000 to 1, and the Foxes were determined to prove their critics wrong, ended up winning the title with ten points gap with the runner-up, Arsenal. While watching the games was certainly a thrilling journey, through this book I get to know their road to the trophy and the stories of everyone important in this momentous achievement.

This is a story that makes you feel like you can do anything. In an age of professional soccer where money means everything a small club goes on to win the toughest league in the world. Rob Tanner lets the reader experience this amazing piece of the Premier Leagues history all over again and from a different viewpoint than their own. Not many people can say that they were fans of Leicester City before the 15/16 season but the author allows the reader to have insight on what it was like to be a Leicester City fan during one of the most amazing seasons ever.

When I picked up "5000-1: The Leicester City Story: How We Beat the Odds to Become Premier League Champions" by Rob Tanner, I anticipated a thrilling recount of one of football's most miraculous seasons. What I didn't expect was how deeply I would be drawn into the narrative, experiencing the highs and lows of Leicester City's journey as if I were part of the squad. This book is more than a sports story; it's a testament to the power of belief, teamwork, and the magic of the underdog.

Rob Tanner does an exceptional job of capturing the essence of Leicester City's 2015-2016 Premier League season. His writing is vivid and engaging, making it easy to relive the nail-biting matches and the electric atmosphere that surrounded each game. From the start, Tanner immerses the reader in the world of Leicester City, providing rich context and background that highlight just how improbable their success was.

The book’s structure is one of its greatest strengths. Tanner meticulously chronicles the season game by game, providing insights into the strategies, key moments, and pivotal decisions that defined Leicester's campaign. This approach allows readers to fully appreciate the magnitude of what the team accomplished, turning each chapter into a suspenseful and exhilarating read. Even though I knew the outcome, I found myself on the edge of my seat, eager to see how each match would unfold.

What sets this book apart is Tanner's ability to convey the emotional depth of the story. He goes beyond the statistics and scores, delving into the personal journeys of the players, the manager, and the fans. Claudio Ranieri’s leadership, Jamie Vardy’s remarkable rise, and the sheer grit of the entire squad are portrayed with such authenticity that it’s impossible not to be moved. Tanner's interviews and firsthand accounts add a layer of intimacy and realism that make the reader feel like an insider.

One of the most inspiring aspects of "5000-1" is its portrayal of the unity and spirit within the Leicester City team. Tanner highlights how the players' camaraderie and unwavering belief in each other were crucial to their success. This theme of collective effort and resilience resonates throughout the book, offering valuable lessons about the importance of teamwork and perseverance in the face of adversity.

However, the book is not without its minor flaws. At times, the detailed recounting of matches can feel repetitive, especially for readers who are not die-hard football fans. Additionally, while Tanner’s focus on the Leicester City perspective is compelling, a broader look at the reactions from other clubs and the media might have added more depth to the narrative. Despite these minor issues, they do little to detract from the overall impact and enjoyment of the story.

In conclusion, "5000-1: The Leicester City Story: How We Beat the Odds to Become Premier League Champions" is a must-read for football enthusiasts and anyone who loves a good underdog story. Rob Tanner’s passionate and meticulous recounting of Leicester City's historic season is both inspiring and entertaining. It’s a celebration of one of football’s greatest triumphs, capturing the heart and soul of a team that defied all expectations. This book reminds us that in sports, as in life, sometimes the impossible can happen.

So kita

It takes a village to win it. Kesemuanya saling menyokong satu sama lain selain memainkan

Perhaps one of the reasons why they are able to
perform so beautifully is because they play without stress on their shoulders. 5000-1 is their
odds to win the premier league, that alone speaks volume i.e Leicester is an underdog team.

It is safe to say that everyone loves an underdog story. For me, to have such a story in my favorite sport is something I cherish a lot. As a fan of Manchester City, I remember how I kept on hoping Leicester to trip on certain games, but their 3-1 win over Man City on our own turf make me realize that they are for real. At that point, I knew they will win it.

Premier League, I have said it time and time again, to people how tough it is to win this league. The demand to stay consistent throughout a season is no easy feat. Adding to the fact of the English football scheduling, where you have to keep up with 2 cups in the mix of league games. It is tough to win there. Some can argue it is tougher to win here than to win the Champions League. The basic argument of toughness between league matches and playoff matches, I usually lean toward the former being more challenging.

That being said, reading this book is a very enjoyable experience. The chronological storytelling makes it easy to digest. The fact that they start the book from their amazing league survival run in the previous season, makes it more amazing. As if the magic continued. The way they single out each player's story on the 'reject' tag is a very great way of adding context to the story too. Knowing each of their backgrounds, each of their rags-to-riches story. None of them are expected to deliver such a feat.

Overall a great read. A strong recommendation for all those football geeks, or just sports geeks. An underdog story, one of the best underdog stories in the modern sports era.

Read lots of sports stories before but never anything about soccer. Over the last few years I’ve gotten more and more into the sport, in particularly the English system. I came across this story a few weeks ago and was inspired to listen to it by the relaunch of the PL after the Covid pause. Was a bit worried it might read like a string of newspaper clippings and even though it was some of that they did a nice job weaving it all together. Definitely a great story and I’m happy for all involved but not knowing much about the history and underdogness that was involved it was a bit hard to appreciate it at times as maybe I could have.

great memories

As someone who is a lifelong fan and season ticket holder until I moved to Africa, I watched this from my local bar in Tanzania, literally in the middle of nowhere.
This book made my sine tingle with the memories and images it formed.
5000-1. Little Leicester premier league champions. The ultimate underdog moment. The phoenix moment.
The greatest ever sporting moment.

A good read. Good job Rob Tanner.

Normally, my chief grumble with writing on sport is that with the benefit of hindsight, the whole tale of what happened is altered to fit the final narrative, yet there was no such issue with this book and it still felt completely flat to me.

The Leicester City story is incredible, and one that has been told many, many times in the national press. By enlisting the services of a local journalist, one would expect this title to have an extra level of detail from someone whose job is to exclusively cover one team, but who also has the experience from a time when Leicester were not in the public eye. Indeed, one of the few strengths is the details of players' personas that didn't really come to light in the fawning press - unfortunately, this book is still quite biased in this regard.

It does seem churlish to say so given the scale of the achievement, but Tanner is afraid to say a bad word about the club, a position that is not justified by Leicester's victory - it is possible to praise without avoiding any criticism whatsoever. Notable instances include the attitude towards Jamie Vardy (whose criminal actions are brushed off as he was defending a deaf mate), the refereeing in the Arsenal and West Ham matches, and Leicester's own undoing in the away Arsenal match.

However, the major problem is the style of the book. Despite my usual dislike of revisionist tales, the inclusion of blogs written at the time feels both a little unwieldy and a little long. It is interesting to see how much players such as Gokhan Inler were of greater focus at the start of the season, but later entries often overlap with the remaining text and each other - especially as the only theme in later blogs is "can they do it?"

The summaries of each game only tend to focus on the scorers, and read like very brief match reports, and this is another drawback as it makes the story feel quite flat. There is rarely a nod towards a player whose performance in one game goes unheralded because they didn't score, other than in a summary of a player over the whole season, for which most players featured at some point. It also means that you rarely get a sense for the game itself, with a lot of the emotion left out of it, and a lack of detailing of key moments - Mahrez's goal against Man City, or indeed the game itself, is just one that didn't quite feel as significant on paper as it did watching at the time.

As alluded to earlier, the interesting parts of the book are the new things we learn about players, which can only be gleamed from a longer relationship that Tanner enjoys, but he is too eager to paint the entire squad as a bunch of rejects and underdogs, rather than applying it to certain players only. Despite his dip into lower leagues, Kasper Schmeichel has not had a particularly difficult career, nor really have Huth or Fuchs.

With a brief to clearly get a book quickly after the title win, it was inevitable that this book would not be laid out perfectly - however its hasty launch was detrimental in my eyes, and did not offer enough for someone who follows football closely already.

This is an enjoyable read about Leicester City's amazing title-winning season, in which they started with odds of 5000/1 to be Premier League champions and were favourites only for relegation.

Rob Tanner, as football writer for the local Leicester Mercury newspaper, has a fluid and conversational style that is geared towards readers who might not know much about Leicester City's history or its players.

The book, a linear review 2015/16 year, also includes short summaries of games rather than whole match reports, and there are occasional articles that the author includes from his regular newspaper column that give a sense of how this story developed over the course of a whole season.

Overall a quick, exciting read, helping to reflect on one of the greatest sporting achievements of our time, and a book that all football fans would enjoy.
